Simulating a Network?

Hiya!
I'm currently working on a gaming-protocol which will be prototyped in java (for it's simplistic networking capabilities). The problem though is that I need to simulate a network. With this I mean that I have to be able to start several instances of my protocol and somehow assign each of them a unique IP which can be used for communicating. Does anyone know if there is any way to do this - some kind of network simulation tool for Java which implements all TCP/IP classes and that can simulate different speeds, etc. Thanks in advance

Nope - anyways, I already got the answer to my question. The thing is that it's pretty hard to simulate true tcp/ip if you are not using it and doing that on a large scale using a single PC isn't that easy. During the early stages I will loopback, but that only gives me 127.0.0.* addresses. If I really want to put it to a test, I will need at least a 100000 addresses. I may as well say what I'm proposing to do. I've been designing a high level protocol which is to be used for anything involving large amounts of users and information (e.g. computer games, filesharing, transactions). As you can see when playing most online games or joining kazaa (or similar), the number of users are severely limited because of lacking bandwidth (or rather too big a data flow).

    I am running two windows server 2012 R2 machines clustered with a disk witness.  The disk witness is a LUN created on our SAN, presented to both machines.  SAN is connected through two fiber channels per server both servers are networked on split
    out network connections teamed together.  Now on a hard server fault or simulated power failure  (i.e. pulling the power cords from a server) Disk witness will fail over to second node and Cluster survives.  But, when simulating a Network card
    failure (disconnecting the cat5) from the Node hosting the Disk witness, I see the cluster attempt to offload hosting to UP node.   But, the Disk witness will not come online.   I think that the issue is because the server is technically
    still running and the disk Witness has not really failed on the primary host, so it never releases ownership.  I am new to clustering and could use a little guidance here.  Is there anyway to make the disk witness

    Please try to modify network settings for a failover cluster 
    1. In the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in, if the cluster that you want to configure is not displayed, in the console tree, right-click Failover Cluster Manager, click Manage
    a Cluster, and then select or specify the cluster that you want.
    2. If the console tree is collapsed, expand the tree under the cluster that you want to configure.
    3. Expand Networks.
    4. Right-click the network that you want to modify settings for, and then click Properties.
    5. If needed, change the name of the network.
    6. Select one of the following options:
    -Allow cluster network communication on this network
    If you select this option and you want the network to be used by the nodes only (not clients), clear Allow clients to connect through this network. Otherwise, make sure it
    is selected.
    -Do not allow cluster network communication on this network
     Select this option if you are using a network only for iSCSI (communication with storage) or only for backup. (These are among the most common reasons for
    selecting this option.)

  • Member loses network connection

    Hi,
    I have two members in my cluster and they are linked by a distributed cache. Member A is used to load an object and caches this object in its cache. Member B can then load this object as expected. I then simulate a network failure between the two members. If I then try and load the same object from Member B the object cannot be found.
    Any ideas why this is?

    my first suggestion to simulating a network failure in this case would be using two hubs/switches, put the to-be-disconnected node to one and the rest to the other, and remove the cable disconnecting the two hubs/switches :-)

    If your switch support VLAN tagging, you can use both NIC's for public and private using different VLAN ID's

  • Recognizing data clusters

    I have an exercise in computer logic.  I have and array of XY values that when plotted on an XY graph would form clusters.  Sometimes there is one cluster of plots, sometimes two, sometimes three.  The cluster shapes are somewhat irregular.  And sometimes the clusters slightly overlap.
    Anyway, my program needs to be able to recognize, for any given x,y plot, which cluster that plot belongs too.  This is so my program can analyize that plot seperately.
    Possible solutions I'm investigating is incorporating classical logic; fuzzy logic; simulated neural network.  Frankly, I not much of a mathematician, so some classical logic solution would probably be easiest for me.

  • Only one receiver in local communication via socket

    I am simulating a network of 4 nodes that exchange messages between each other on localhost.
    Each node has two threads: Sender thread and Receiver thread that use DatagramSocket for communications:
    For the Sender socket:
    DatagramSocket sock_sender = new DatagramSocket(null);
              sock_sender.setReuseAddress(true);
    DatagramPacket dp = new DatagramPacket(buffer, buffer.length,
                             InetAddress.getByName("localhost"), PortA);
    Now for the receiver socket,
    DatagramSocket sock_recev = new DatagramSocket(null);
              sock_recev.setReuseAddress(true);
              sock_recev.bind( new InetSocketAddress (InetAddress.getByName("localhost"),PortA)
    To conclude, I have multiple receivers that listen to the same remote port.
    The issue now is that only one node can receive data from other sender processes!
    Is there any idea about the reason of this issue and how to process to avoid it?

    If they all use the same address and port all the receivers should see the same packets, including their own.
    Have you considered using a multicast address?

  • Issues with Login on CUPC with CUPS

    I resently had a fully working system using the following software versions and configuration:
    CUCM Version: 8.5.1.12900-7
    CUPS Version: 8.0.0.39051-20
    Active Directory
    DNS
    LDAP
    I have a single cluster using demo licences in a VMware lab enviroment. As said above it was all working fine untill we had some network changes today. 
    Node 1
    CUCM and CUPS
    2 X CUPC Cliants plus 2 X Cisco IP Phones
    Node 2
    2 X CUPC Cliants plus 2 X Cisco IP Phones
    I have a simulated core network emulating a WAN and today we intraduced a couple more devices resulting in increased network hops. At present the network seems to be working as it should and I can ping everything from everwhere. I also have the CallManager up and phones registering local on Node 1 and also phones registering on the remote Node 2. I can make calls between all the devices as well.
    The problem I now have is on the remote node both CUPC clients get the following error when trying to athenticate: "Login Failed"
    The two clients I have on the local node authenticate fine and I have Presence and IM working as it should.
    Any help or ideas would be much apreceated indeed as I have to get this working first thing tomorrow AM

    1- Make sure from your username and password which you are using are correct .
    2- on CUPS , make sure that you use the IP address of prescense not the name.On CUPS system -system topolgy - make sure on node configuration (you use the Ip address not the nameof CUPS).
    3-On CUCM - system - application server - make sure that you use the IP address of your CUPS not the name .
    4-Make sure that the users synchronize between your CUCM and CUPS correctly.
    5-If you use LDAP integration , please find the below:-

    6-Please make sure on CUCM  system-licensing-capabilties assignment - and select your users and selec the below
    Enable UPS and Enable UPC.

    aashuCan you please define what you mean by simulation? Do you just want a graphical representation? In that case your question is in the wrong forum.
    If you mean something else then you're likely also in trouble. If by simulation you mean interacting with the OS in such a way that you are simulating a network this is not going to be possible in Java.

  • QoS in UMTS

    I am working on my masters project and have simulated a network which is a an integration of cellular and ad hoc i.e. nodes have the ability to talk amongst themselves and base station. The overall delay and quality of service is very poor from the statistics. (mainly delay). I need to know if there is a QoS algorithm that I can use in my simulation to improve QoS. I am using OPNET for my simulations. I was thinking of parameters such as Delay, BER and a priority bit depending on class of traffic.

    The QoS systems in Cisco´s devices are more hardware dependent than the Universities queries theory ( Erlangs ...). This is a big question that I wondering since I learn the Cisco´s Queues functions (RED ...) so if you want to properly study for QoS and queues you have to know how the Cisco´s hardware treat the traffic inside ( ASICs... ). This is my opinion after considering it for some time.

    I need a good software package that emulate an entire network, i need simulation for routers, switch and firewalls, i need to be able to simulate VPN connection.  Wish is the best sofwares available to do this ?

    pkampana, thank you for the feed back I will look at both of these.  I have seen a lot of good ref. to the GNS3 and that it is Freeware which is nice as I am paying for my own education on this stuff.

    I looking for network simulation software in order to prepare for CCNA and CCDA exams. I know that Boson makes similar software for the PC, but I have not been able to find anything for my Mac.

    I searched long and hard for the same thing about six months ago, and gave up once the Intel Macs came out. I ended up purchasing RouterSim as I could run it through Parallels on our Intel Macs. Sorry to say, but you're probably outa luck

  • Network Simulation problem !

    Can anyone explain HOW and WHY the devices on the image ( PC,Routers,Hubs and Servers) are connected with each other in that way and with those kind of cables ? I have an assignment to similarly connect three cities with the simulator but at first I must understand this given example network . I'll appreciate anyone who can help me and explain this network in detail ( especially the cables that are used to connect the devices ) . I apologise if I made any grammatical or vocabulary errors . I'm waiting for any helpful replies :)

    The answer is there in the picture!
    Red cable between the 2 routers is WAN serial
    Black cable making an Ethernet connection from routers to hubs and then hubs to PC's and server's.
    Dashed blue cable console connection to configure the routers from PC's.
    If you are connecting three cities you would need some kind of WAN connection. Using serial is older technology now. Most modern WAN solutions would be presented as Ethernet but I guess it depends what services are available in your country! This would connect to a router.
    The LAN side would normally always be Ethernet so a hub/switch onsite to connect up PC's and server's.

    Does anyone know of a good tool for running simulated traffic and measuring network performance prior to implementing Lync?  
    I am looking for a tool that would be able to simulate the different types of traffic generated by Lync and uses the associated codecs.  I currently use NetIQ Vivinet Assessor for VoIP traffic, but it is limited to only the standard voice codecs.  I
    would like to be able to measure the performance of a data network prior to implementing any of the Lync servers, so it cannot rely on any of the MS services.

    I am just checking to find out if the LSS tool must be executed within the production Network environment in order to determine the actual and useable Network metrics during a Network Traffic Simulation. One of the LSS
    related documents (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41935) suggest that the tool should be executed in an isolated test environment.
    I will also like to know if I can only perform a Network Readiness Assessment Traffic simulation after deploying the planned Lync 2013 Servers\Topology into production.
    I will appreciate some help in clarifying these two points.
