Simultaneous File Acces across Network

Slightly worrying file sharing problem has occurred since upgrading our networked Macs to Leopard (10.5.x and 10.6.2 as appropriate) after a new iMac was installed.
We have a host system (iMac G5) which has an external HD connected where all our documents are stored. Also on the same network are 2 more iMacs and an iBook G4. Everyone needs access to all the documents, we're an interior design company and share spreadsheets, WP Docs and FileMaker databases. Obviously, the databases aren't a problem.
Prior to Leopard, a warning would be issued when an attempt was made to open a document if another user already had the document open. Now, with the host & user running Leopard, the document opens in Read-Write mode and can be saved with no warnings.
With the host running Tiger and a client running Leopard the document opens read-write but a warning is only received when a save is attempted. If the 1st user had made changes and saved, no warning is issued and the 2nd user overwrites those changes.
If the host is running Leopard and the client is running Tiger a warning is still received when attempting to open the document.
When both systems were running Tiger, if an attempt was made to open an already open document, a warning would be received before the document was opened and it would be opened in read-only mode.
Can this be intentional and correct?

Sounds like you need some kind of document management system that requires users to check documents in and out, and won't let multiple users work on a particular file at a time. Most of the ones I'm familiar with (and I'm only remotely familiar with them) are version control programs designed for controlling access to programming code. I'm not sure what kind of options there are for less technical users.
Another option would be to use [Google Docs|http://docs.google.com> for your documents. Google Docs is a web-based replacement for your normal word processor and spreadsheet apps, and is designed with sharing in mind.

  • FileLock Doesn't Work Across Network

    I have found a case in which FileLock doesn't work. I'm trying to use FileLock to prevent two instances of the same process to run simultaneously on different machines (or the same machine) on the network. I actually saw two processes, one on each of two Linux machines obtain a lock on the same file at the same time.
    Can I be sure that FileLock is calling fcntl and not flock (which wouldn't work over the network)?
    Is there any way to fix this or get around it??
    Here is the relevant code:
    try{
         File lockFile = new File(getLockFilename());
         lockFile.createNewFile();  // Throw out the boolean return value; it doesn't matter if this succeeded.
         FileChannel fc = new FileOutputStream(lockFile).getChannel();
         fileLock = fc.lock();
    catch (FileLockInterruptionException flie){
         // Allow this one.
    catch (IOException ioe){
            // Report the exception, release the lock if obtained and exit.
    // Code executed while the file is locked includes setting up and registering an RMI server object.
    try{
         fileLock.release();
    catch (IOException ioe){
         logger.warn("Unable to relase file lock:  " + ioe.getClass().getName() + ":  " + ioe.getMessage());
    }

    I suppose when you say "across network", you mean via
    nfs?Yes.
    Have each machine check some central point (or all
    other nodes) for the existence of a server. Of course
    there could be some synchronization problems, so you
    might check several times. Even if the remote
    interface is successfully exported, have it check one
    final time to ensure. To be paranoid, you could have
    it check often.We have a strong requirement not to have a central server, which has made coding this a headache. It would be pretty unacceptable to query every machine on our network (most of which probably aren't running any related process at any one time and are probably running other jobs) any time someone wants to start one of these processes on any machine. (There could be hundreds of these processes running at once with different parameters; it's just that no two with the same parameters are allowed to run at once. Each of these will act as a separate RMI server so other processes can communicate with the running process for other purposes besides just determining whether it is running.) A registry can only contain objects on one machine, right? Or can I somehow bind everything on the same host even though that's not where the objects are?? I am already writing the name of the successful host for one parameter set to a file and barring other processes with the same parameters from executing if looking up the process on that host succeeds. This works in most cases, but there is a race condition if two processes start around the same time and both read the file before either has written its host name there. That's why I'm trying to use a file lock on a different file so the read-bind-write sequence happens while the file is locked.

  • Permissions Issues Across Network

    Hi all, I am running into permissions errors when accessing files over a network. Our network is simple, consists of two external USB drives and a linksys network appliance that they both plug into. I am trying to synch the two drives and can mount them locally, but the drive I am trying to back up to is showing read only permissions. How can I change permissions globally to be read / write for all drives that are mounted?
    Thanks in advance for you help.

    Accessing the various user folders across the network works the same as it does on the machine itself - if you don't log in to an account you are not supposed to be able to see into it (logging in as a guest will allow access to the public folders). Permissions on an external drive don't usually count for much, since just about anyone can check that 'ignore' box (although the drive won't mount at all in an account that has no access privileges). The system sometimes doesn't like to copy certain items from a user account, but copying (or creating an encrypted disk image) from within the user account and then moving it to the external drive should work OK.

  • Acces both network interfaces at the same time

    Hello community,
    I have a little problem that I cant seem to solve.
    My iMac is connected wired to a network wich has all ports blocked except the the neccecery ports wich are required for the company network.
    Besides that, there is also an open wifi network wich has no ports blocked. In order for iMessage to work properly, I must use the wifi network, however when wifi is activated and is set as the first network, work related software dont work since they need a connection to the secure network.
    So my question is:
    Is there any way to acces both networks at the same time ?
    Or let one app use one network connection and another app use wifi.
    Thanks a lot!

    The behavior you describe sounds quite unusual. Can you provide a screenshot of the window you are attempting to move?
    If you are describing the process of moving a tab from one Internet Explorer window to another on a separate screen, you do not need to drag the tab to the taskbar icon when transitioning between
    windows, you can drag the tab directly from the row of tabs on one window to the other.
    If you are clicking a button in the window bar that minimizes multiple windows simultaneously, you may be describing a third party window management application (NVIDIA nView, AMD HYDRAVISION).

  • ODD new issue opening files from another network machine

    okay, my setup is kind of convaluted, but this is what I have: I made the switch to Mac last year, and do all of my processing on my Macbook Pro. It has CS5 on it.
    Because I havent been able to print properly from it (an alleged driver issue, wherein my images print with a 1/4" offset), I still print from a networked Windows Vista machine in the office--and because I hated the print dialogs in CS3 & CS4, I actually still print from PS CS2
    (I know, probably seems senseless, but it works best for me). Life has been peachy.
    Now for the issue:
    Suddenly, as of today, PS on the Windows machine wont open any jpg or psd on the Mac. If I copy/move it to the Windows desktop, it opens just fine. I either get a message saying it's "the wrong type of file," or--more bizarre, when I double click a file to open, I actually get the dialog box you get when you hit ctrl-N for a new document... and this happens the same in CS2, 3, & 4. Any clue as to what the heck I've got going on?
    thanks!

    This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
    If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
      Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
         Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
        Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
      If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
    When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Lightroom Library Accessible across network?

    Is there a way to have the library and all edits, etc. available to multiple users on a network? I work with four other photographers and a couple of art directors who all have access to a single server loaded up with tetrabytes of images sorted by assignments in respective folders. We've been using ACR and Bridge to view, assign metadata, and edit, duplicating RAW files for multiple processing interpretations, etc. I'm interested in seeing if Lightroom will help with our workflow, but a centralized library is absolutely necessary to start. Thanks for any help.

    >As I understand it, the library itself won't be accessible on the network in v1.
    johnbeardy, "Lightroom Library Accessible across network?" #1, 31 Jan 2007 7:24 am
    That's what I heard as well. It's a shame as with the advent of cheap NAS storage, it is very common for photographers to have all their data on the network and only the applications on the computer.
    I don't have a need for multiple users of the same library, but I do need to keep the library on NAS storage. That should be a simple fix for Adobe to implement. It's also an important fix as there have been several instances of people on the labs forums finding that they could not install Lightroom as they had redirected their "My Documents" directory (on Windows) onto a network mount.
    Full multi-user support is more complex and probably does require a database transplant to something with a more advanced locking concept than SQLite.

  • Copy folder across network to network sharepoint

    I want to set up a crontab or even a script crontab can run to
    create a folder with date and name of computer and transfer
    a folder with files in it to the server where the sharepoints are located.
    Also, what about authentication? I can set up a user with no password, but how would the script or crontab be set for a specific username and/or password?
    I know how to create the folders and have used the cp command.
    I am very unsure on how to setup a way to transfer the files to a share point across network.
    Any ideas?

  • Excel 2008, read-only file access from network volume

    Hi,
    Need some assistance please.
    I recently setup a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz (10.5.2) and did a migration from a Powerbook G4. Installed Office 2008.
    Excel will not open ANY files from a network volume without giving a read-only access error.
    Word is ok and opens files fine.
    drag the file from the network to the desktop and it opens ok. drag it back and it copys ok.
    so, I created a new user and the problem persists.
    I fired up a Macbook running 10.5.2 and Office 2008 and it logged onto the network fine and opened the excel docs just fine.
    mmm, ok must be an OS problem.
    So, I have just endured waiting for the archive and install to complete on the Macbook Pro and the problem is still there !!!!!
    Help.
    Is my only fix going to be a complete erase and start again from fresh ?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
    I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
    I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
    Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
    bugger.
    Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
    Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
    I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
    mmmm, opens fine.
    what's the difference....
    mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
    the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
    could this be the problem.
    Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
    Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.

  • Read-only file access from network volume

    I get an read-only file access from network volume problem while sharing a drive from Snow Leopard to a Tiger install. Most of files were opening well, but *.fp7 (FileMaker) and *.xls (Excel) files won't open dealing with a read-only error.
    As descibed in the last post of http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1406977 the client have the same share name of the server. Renomming it resolved the error!
    Thanks!

  • Is there a cure for persistent file corruptions across the suite?

    i am having terrible and consistent problems with file corruptions across the suite. for example…
    1: i collected for output (indesign) – corrupted over 100 small images that were linked.
    2: opened an indesign job and all linked files failed to update and could not be imported (simply would not import those files and were all corrupted).
    3: had a hang in photoshop followed by a 150:30 error (would not open any of my applications). this prompted a clean install of system and adobe cs4 see below
    4: most recently, had a hang in photoshop (photoshop will also no "force quit") whilst indesign was open. two of my image files corrupted and, most surprisingly, all my illustrator files that i had placed also corrupted (will not even open in illustrator any more). illustrator was not even running at the time, so, get this – a hang in photoshop destroys illustrator files simply because they are placed in indesign.
    this last event has made me more certain than ever that there is a fundamental problem at the cs4 core.
    can anyone help?
    please note the following:
    i am running a macintosh imac, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (latest imac), with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram.
    before this last disaster, i had reloaded the system software (archive and install), and updated it all the way to version 10.5.8
    i then uninstalled the creative suite, ran the cleanscript from adobe, reloaded the creative suite, downloaded all the cs4 updates
    (so, latest mac, latest system, latest cs4 – all clean installs).
    is there something i can do? or is this just a very unstable and disappointing upgrade – i have had nothing but problems from day one!
    many thanks if anyone has any advice.
