Simultaneous package downloader for pacman 3.5+ [solved]

Is there such thing?  Searching hasn't found anything but often you need to the know what you're searching for

pacman2aria2
it has a script called powerpill-light that does what old powerpill did, it's a little bit different though, it has no -S and uses -u to download packages.

That worked - thanks. It'd have helped had I remembered to write over pacman.conf of course! I've not done any mainentance for while, got a little rusty i'm afraid.

  • [Solved] Downloading package binaries without pacman

I'm trying to install Arch on my little Acer Aspire One D250. Unfortunately, the installation image comes with kernel 2.6.30, which has broken drivers for all the network hardware on that machine. So, I need to download the new 2.6.32 kernel on another computer, then install it off of a USB stick with pacman -U.
So, my question is: how do I download the package binaries for the new kernel without going through pacman? TIA.

    try here http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/core/os/i686/
    or here http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/core/os/x86_64/
You can find all the mirrors in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.

  • "pacman" check for new packages, but without updating database.(SOLVED

Is there a way for pacman to tell you what packages could be updated but without changing your database? The reason I ask is that doing pacman -Sy is unsupported, as it could lead to old versions of a package being incompatible with news one of another. Basically, I am wondering if pacman has a way to tell you "what would happen" if I did pacman -Sy.
    Last edited by TheKing42 (2014-12-07 19:28:44)

I don't understand why do you want to keep your pacman database out of date. It's not possible to install outdated packages, they are dropped from the repository when an updated version is uploaded.

  • [Solved] Replacing package cache directory for pacman

    Hi
I want to replace "/var/cache/pacman/pkg" by "/home/zetro/linux/arch/pkg" for caching pacman packages, so that pacman always looks and saves packages in /home/zetro/linux/arch/pkg. Can I do it by simply uncommenting
    #CacheDir = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
line in /etc/pacman.conf or is there anything else to do?
    Regards
    Last edited by zetrotrack000 (2014-03-18 11:38:03)

I'm not sure if paccache picks the cachedir from pacman.conf, I think you may need to specify it with the '-c' switch.
    Just something to remember.

  • Where can I download adobe File Packager tool for Windows?

    Dear all,
I need to understand the detail format of f4f files, but the only useful information I can find is the following:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/httpdynamicstreaming/pdfs/httpdynamicstreaming_wp_ue.pdf
Is there more detail specification for f4f ?
Where can I download adobe File Packager tool for Windows?
It seems to me the following specification is not correct for f4f, at least the parts talking about "mdat" box
    http://download.macromedia.com/f4v/video_file_format_spec_v10_1.pdf
    Thanks,

As per your question – follow this link http://www.adobe.com/products/adobe-media-server-family.html, download and install AMS Starter, then inside \tools\f4fpackager you’d find the F4F packager command-line application.

  • [SOLVED ]makepkg asking for pacman-color binary

After upgrading pacman to 4.1 I'm getting this error every time I run makepkg:

Even if I try to use --nocolor:
    /usr/bin/makepkg --nocolor -s -i

I've tried enabling and disabling color options in both makepkg.conf and pacman.conf, and the error is still there.

    echo $PACMAN
    pacman-color
I guess I've forgotten to edit some file that I changed when using pacman-color-testing from the AUR.
EDIT: Indeed, I forgot to edit my .zprofile that used to export PACMAN as pacman-color. Solved now

  • Pacinfo - a package information utility for pacman

Maybe some of you have already read this on the Arch Linux planet. I have released pacinfo 0.1, it's a package information utility for pacman with the following features:
        * list all installed packages
        * screenshot support (fetching from http://screenshots.debian.net/ like the Ubuntu Software Center)
        * large screenshot if you click on the thumbnail
        * shows installed files of a package
        * shows some details of the package
        * full-text search in the whole package name
More features are planned. You can find the project at Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/pacinfo/ There is also a screencast about it functionality.
I have add it to the AUR repo: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46065
It's written in Mono and GTK#.
This thread should be used as a discussion thread about features and bugs.
NOTE: This is my personal project and has nothing to do with my work at Arch Linux, it's not an official Arch Linux project!

Looks very cool!  However, I do get an error when I try to build it from AUR.  I'm using the i686 vesion of Arch, have all dependencies, and everything is up to date.  Not sure if this will be info-overkill, but I'm just trying to help:

  • PaCPAN: tool for building Perl packages for Pacman from CPAN

    http://xyne.archlinux.ca/info/pacpan
    *edit*
Pacpan functionality has evolved as of version 4.0. CPAN distribution and metadata handling has improved and there are now functions which can query installed packages to determine their adherence to the packaging guidelines.
Building packages with dependency resolution etc has been move to bauerbill, which can now build CPAN packages using standard pacman options, e.g. "bauerbill -S perl-foo-bar" or "bauerbill -S Foo::Bar".

  • HT1338 I'm having difficulty getting my scanner to communicate with my new Photoshop CSX trial software. I can purchase the software as soon as i know the scanner works and i can work as normal! i'm looking for a way to download the scanner driver to solv

Would any of you know by any chance how to find the download for a Mac OS X scanner driver? my Canon LIDE 600F scanner normally works fine - and i've checked and in principle it should be compatible with the latest Photoshop CS6 trial i've successfully downloaded. i've checked the Apple software update and that's fine too. it's just that when i open my photoshop CS6 and go to File - import - scanner, the scanner is 'missing' - and then when i try every which way, an error flag comes up, stating there's an internal error and cites the scanner driver. it looks as though i need a scanner driver download for Mac OS X 10.6. i've googled this and can't find it .... has anyone else encountered this hitch since downloading the latest Photoshop? previously i had Photoshop CS3 - it's the CS6 version now that i'm trying to work with. You know how it is, deadline approaching and trying not to OD on coffee

Performed downloads via pacman of twelve packages including xorg and xfce4.

Pacman -S firefox produced..... /usr/bin/pacman/ report(forget the exact error)
Subsequent trials with ...pacman -U .... produces seg fault.
Cannot use pacman.  All other programs seem to perform correctly.  Perhaps have lost DNS.
    Cannot perform ...pacman -Syu --debug.....segfaults.
Last edited by lilsirecho (2011-07-19 18:19:49)

Solved the difficulty but have no idea what can be done to prevent it from occuring for another user.
It seems that the db did not get upgraded when the ...pacman-db-upgrade ...command was executed.  There was no statement for ..."pre 3.5 db" upgrade....while executing the command.
After re-install, the upgrade command performed correctly and pacman now performs correctly after reboots.
The question comes up as to what to do if the upgrade command does not work correctly and whether some indicator of correct response should appear in the beginners guide.  Additionally, what can be done in the event that the upgrade command fails to meet the correct response.
These questions will in time be resolved by a new .iso but the present exposure is amazing in its consequences!
Perhaps the upgrade command is also a function of properly synced mirrors but the command requesting the upgrade was ...pacman -Syy... the mirror sync function!
    What do we have...catch22?
The resultant segfaults make sense if the pacman sync db is not upgraded.
How is a user to know the upgrade failed?  What to do about such a condition?

  • Custom dowload manager for pacman in chroot env

    Hello
As this is the place for pacman in general I post here. Feel free to move that thread if you feel it would have a more suitable place.
I'm willing to install Arch on my computer from the live disk of another distro (Tails, based on Debian). I follow these guidelines but an issue is risen because of Tor wich makes resolving DNS less straightforward. Thus I've tried to use the option XferCommand in /etc/pacman.conf in the following way:
    XferCommand = /usr/bin/curl --socks5-hostname 127.0.0.1:9050 -C - -f %u > %o
    but I just get errors.

Would you have any idea to solve this problem? Of course I've checked that /usr/bin contains curl with this line:
    XferCommand = ls /usr/bin && /usr/bin/curl --socks5-hostname 127.0.0.1:9050 -C - -f %u > %o
but it seems to be very contradictory:

  • A nice feature for pacman

I dont think im the only one that does a weekly "pacman -Syu", many do it more often i guess, but i cant allow that, so i do it once a week, now i dont have that many pkgs as i've been really busy and just reinstalled Arch a week or so ago, but i do had this thought before i reinstalled:
When i had my prior system, i had lots of packages, and sometimes i didnt want to update them all at the same night (yeah you guessed, dialup), so i had to "manually" see what where the ones i wanted more.
Now, here is the issue, "pacman -Syu" is a list of all the pkgs available for update with no particular order except for the abecedary, so some pkgs starting with "k" would be mixed with the KDE ones and the same for the "G" and Gnome, and all this made a lot more complicated to choose what packages to upgrade. So i was thinking, cant the output of "pacman -Syu" be categorized? as with the categories the Arch installer use?
I think an ordered list of the packages available would be a much nicer thing to see and very usufull too.
Hope you take it in consideration.
    Regrets.

apeiro wrote:It would be problematic to start doing partial sysupgrades. You might miss a key dependency and break packages.
    Hi,
I wasnt thinking in doing partial sysupgrades, i think you didnt understood what i wanted to say (im sorry but when i read something written by me in english a couple of hours ago, i find several errors on my ways of expression, not to name grammatical and ortographical).
What i meant, was that if there is a way of ordering the "display" of the output of pacman -Syu in categories, so one can see in more detail for a pkg that might want to update if there is actually any update to do.
    Instead of:
    abiword-1.2-pkg.tar.gz gcc-3.4-pkg.tar.gz libbonoboui-2.3-pkg.tar.gz xfree86-4.4-pkg.tar.gz xmms-2-10.pkg.tar.gz ... [...]
It would be something like this:
    Base:
    gcc-3.4-pkg.tar.gz ... [...]
    Office:
    abiword-1.2-pkg.tar.gz ... [...]
    Multimedia:
    xmms-2.10.pkg.tar.gz ... [...]
    X:
    xfree86-4.4-pkg.tar.gz ... [...]
The numbers in the versions are random except on the ones i remembered current ones.
About missing key dependencies, i do pacman -Syu to see what are the pkgs updated, then choose NO at the do system upgrade question and then i do a pacman -S [app1] [app2] [app3].... and pacman deals with the dependencies, so i dont think we would have any problem with them... is this what you meant??
kakabaratruskia wrote:maybe, there could be an option for pacman, that when you do -Syu, you where asked if you want to install each package. (like download foo? (Y/N), download dasda?(Y/N), etc.)
I think this is a great idea, it would help a lot (i wouldnt have to do the last step in the previous paragraph )
    Something like pacman -Syu --ask
    Anyway, this are just thoughts!
    Regards
