Single Library Shared accross 2 macbooks and 1 xp desktop

I'm looking for itunes nirvana I think but heres what I'd like to do :
1) Have all of my music on a shared network drive that is always available (WD Netcenter) and accessible by the pc and macs.
2) Have all 3 i tunes instance use the shared drive as the i tunes music folder.
3) sync 2 i pods to this single library, using play lists to choose music
4) When I buy a tune from the itunes store I want it reflected in the itunes library on all machines for all users.
5) I want the same library visible on all machines for all users.
6) I want to be able to have some music in a separate library on each of the macbooks.
Now I have accomplished some of these tasks by doing the following :
1 & 2) i have the netcenter setup as my itunes music folder, on the macbooks the itunes music folder for each user is aliased to the shared folder. This took a while to sort out as the macbooks kept resetting my itunes music folder if the shared drive was unavailable.
3) latest release of itunes seems to cope with this ok.
4) I have to manually update the two libraries that did not purchase the music, sometimes it seems to end up getting confused and copying the tunes to where they are already.
5) Using some funky junctions on the pc and aliases on the mac I have all user on the same machine using the same itunes libraries- but cant figure out how to share between the 3 machines.
6) no idea how to do this and keep it separate from the main library.
Can anyone help please ?
thanks
tony

there are many forums on the internet that answer this question. With the release of the new airport extreme (with HD sharing) many people thouhgt that apple would integrate somthing like this. Unfortunately, iTunes edits and reads the library files in a way that makes it really messy if it is open more than once at a time. Basically, the last edit will "stick." So lets say you edit the title of a song on computer a, then shut it down. You then quit iTunes on computer b. The song's title will not be altered!
Hope that helps

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Use one iTunes Library for both my MacBook and Mac Mini

    Hi,
I want to make a few changes in my configuration, but before something will go terribly wrong, I want to make sure I use the correct approach.
Yesterday I got a and on an older Mac Mini Model (G4 - only 40GB hard disc). It runs Leopard. It does not have Wifi, but it is connected to my modem/router.
I also have a MacBook. Currently I have my iTunes Library on an external HD (WD mypassport 320GB) that I hook up to my MacBook when playing music and syncing my iPhone and iPod.
However; I want to use the Mac Mini as a 'Mediacenter' (Big term, because it cannot play HD movies (processor is too old; I mean I want to use it for iTunes and as a DVD player). I have another external HD (Lacie - 500 GB; bigger than the one first mentioned, but this one is not a mobile device). I want to hook this HD to the Mac Mini and put my iTunes Library on this HD so it can be approached through the Mac Mini. Subsequently I want to approach the same library on my Mac Mini on my Macbook…This to control and manage the iTunes library and to keep syncing my iPhone through my Macbook (this is easier to do, because the Macbook has a Keyboard….)
    Few questions;
    1: is this even possible?
2: to transfer my library I will use this method http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US
First copy the library from the WD HD to the Lacie HD; then choose the library on the Lacie in iTunes on the Mac Mini
Then I will have my iTunes Library copied to the Lacie and connected to my Mac Mini.
Then for the second and 'harder part'. The Sharing of one Library over two Macs.
I think I can use the homesharing option. The above mentioned method transferred the whole current library and I can choose the option to automatically transfer new content from my MacBook to the Mini (correct?). But this leaves me with two libraries with the same content (one on the Mini (Lacie) and one on the Macbook (WD).
Is it possible to use only one library (the one on the Mini) and approach and manage it on my Macbook and also syncing my iPhone through my Macbook? I understand that it will loose some speed as the data will be transferred through Wifi from the Mac Mini to the MacBook. But as I will not listen to the music on my MacBook, but only will use it to manage the library, I can handle this….

I managed to transfer all music, movies and tv shows to the External HD (Lacie) and connected that one to the Mini. Then imported all files to the library on the mini. Quite easy!
The second part I left out. It seems the home sharing option works fine for now. I can still 'manage'the library on the mini from my Macbook with the 'share screen' option.

  • I have installed FCE on my macbook and on my desktop. Then I accidentally migrated FCE from the desktop to the macbook. Now each time I launch FCE on the macbook it asks for the product serial number. How can I stop this happening?

I installed Final Cut Epxress 4 on my laptop and my macbook and then accidentally also migrated FCE from the desktop to the macbook. Now each time I launch FCE on the macbook it asks for the software serial number. I enter the number which is then rejetced as it's already been used twice. FCE launches anyway as the licence info had already been written to my hard drive when I first installed FCE. How can I stop it asking for the serial nmber every time I open FCE?

You need to uninstall FCE from you Macbook and then reinstall it.
If you are not familiar with the process, FCS Remover is an app that can uninstall FCE for you.

  • Itunes Library sharing with multiple ipods and 2 pc's

Hi, I have a new Ipod nano and want to use my wifes itunes library with my ipod. Which according to the tech stuff I can share the content by enabling on wifes pc. Done that, which I can now see library on my Acer laptop. However, I can't sync my playlist from her pc to my itunes. I want to download my own podcasts etc.. not clutter her itunes pc. When I transfer the ipod back to my pc it then wants to delete and re-sync.
We have 3 ipods in the house and 2 pc's.
Whats the best way of using the ipods and getting the most out of itunes?
    Thanks

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
There are several different ways to use two iPods with one computer, have a look at this help page for suggestions: How to use multiple iPods with one computer

  • Home sharing with two Macbooks and two Ipod/Iphones

Ive read the tutorials on Home Sharing and am still unclear as to how to move content between two spousal computers, each authorised on separate Ipods/Iphones
We can see each others' Itunes accounts on our network and play content accordingly. 90% of our content is the same (why we are happily married for 25 years) but the 10% that is different is the issue. We cant drag and drop music from one to the other currently.
The tutorial says we have to login to the same Itunes account to move content, but when we do this, it warns us that this will deactivate the Ipod on the other machine - which we dont want of course. We want to move the few songs from one Itunes account to the other while keeping our Ipods/Iphones authorised on our separate machines.
Am i misunderstanding the Home Sharing functionality or is it designed only for a 'shared Itunes account' essentially? That wouldnt work for us.

Ipod/iphones have nothing to do with Home Sharing.
Your ipods/iphones should not even be connected to the computer when you are using home sharing.
Move the music, then sign into your regular account, then sync.

  • Wifi macbook and mac pro desktop

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have a Macbook that can see my router and connect no problem. My Mac Pro desktop computer is far from the router and I want to connect wirelessly, but the Mac Pro can't see the router, even though it has an airport card and is right next to the Macbook. I'm not too wireless savvy — any help would be appreciated. Is it possible for the Macbook to share it's connection with the Mac Pro? I need a quick fix that doesn't involve running a network cable across the house...
    Thanks!

OK, so now you know the wireless card is working, or appears to be working because you can see other networks.
The next task is find out if it will connect to your network, and to do this, you'll need to move the desktop maybe half the distance to the router and see if you can get a connection.
If you can, the area where you had the desktop will need a stronger wireless signal. You don't mention what type of router you are using, so using an AirPort Express to extend the wireless signal can't be recommended..yet..since it may not be compatible with your router.
If you don't want to move the desktop and have to have a connection in the next few hours, get a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. This will be almost as good as a straight ethernet cable and far better than wireless. The adapters (one at the router end and the other at the computer end) use the wiring within your house to transport an ethernet signal.
Best Buy will have a selection or look under "ethernet powerline adapters" in google.

  • Connecting airport extreme to macbook and windows 7 desktop

    Hello,
I currently connect my macbook to the internet via airport extreme wifi.  I tried to also connect my windows 7 desktop to the airport via ethernet, but the PC is saying I have no internet connection.  Are there any configuration / settings  I need to adjust in windows 7 to allow me to connect properly?  I am a novice when it comes to home networking.
    Thanks

Does your Desktop also have wireless? If so, Windows 7 configures wireless by default. You may need to set up the wired LAN settings in Windows 7. This is a guess because the several times I've installed Windows 7 on my Mac Pro it always set up the wireless by default. Until I removed the wireless setup it wouldn't let me connect via Ethernet. Apparently Windows 7 gives priority to wireless.
I'm no Windows 7 expert but this has been my observation.

  • Unable to open library ebooks on my macbook.

    Hello,
I am trying to download library books on my macbook and it is not opening. The screen comes blank when I open the ebook; the sample books here work fine. I had this problem before and somehow it was back to normal but I am having the same problem again. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8. Please help!!!

It could be an authorization issue; though that should give a clearer error message.
The sample books probably don't not worry about the DRM which is why they are OK.
    Try deauthorizing the mac (cmd-shift-D).
Restart ADE and you will be asked to reauthorize.  Give it you Adobe id and password.
With luck, all the books will then work.

  • Using a Single Library for Entire Site and When to Use Subsites

I'm hoping a discussion I am having with my coworkers can be solved.  We are trying to decide two things:
Should the entire office be under a single site or should each division have their own site?  Our Office has 5 divisions that contain 17 Branches, one site for business functions and one top-level site for the entire office.
Is it standard practice to create one huge library managed by metadata or should there be multiple libraries?  I tend to think one library will be too hard to manage with regard to metadata and site columns and that libraries should be based on business
functions or subject domains (i.e., SOPs, Quality Documents, Business Documents, Technical Documents, etc).
Currently, several workflows, libraries and lists have already been created under our business functions site.  In order to house everything under a single site, we would need to change the name of the site and move everything under it.  I'm not
sure if changing the name of the existing site will cause problems.
I group these two items together because they really seem related.  With everything under a single site, individual libraries, lists and workflows could get out of hand as everyone tries to manage their own division.  But then so would a single
library for everyone.  The problem with more than one site is that data cannot flow freely between sites (via workflows) and search would be less effective so some are against separate sites.  So knowing one question may affect the answer for the
    other.
Any thoughts on our library and site structure would be appreciated.  Thanks.

As always the usual SharePoint consultant cop-out answer of 'it depends' is correct.
Having said that there are certain trends that are quite relevant:
It isn't common to use a single site collection for all sites. It can be done but it often leads to a state where you have a single monstrous site collection which is harder to backup, recover and maintain (see the boundaries and limits documents). The
default behaviour in most cases is to have a central 'shared' site collection then one per <group> where Group is a team that works on the same content, has broadly the same area of interest and access. That might be one for HR, one for the Support team,
one for the Sales team etc.
In terms of libraries there's a wide variation. If there' no difference in views, security and metadata then keeping the library count down is generally a good thing. However using multiple libraries can make life easier and better for users by allowing
more useful views, more secure by locking down libraries rather than using item level permissions (always a nightmare) and allowing more useful alerts and so on.
SharePoint architecture is a science but it's a really, really hard one to formulate into If/Then rules. So, broadly answering your questions I would lean towards multiple site collections and I generally agree with you on point 2, although if there's only
a small number of documents and simple structure then a single library might still make sense.

  • I downloaded the new iphoto to my macbook pro. Now when I open it, there is a message telling me that "your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." What do I do I had 16,000 pictures.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I downloaded the new iphoto to my macbook pro. Now when I open it, there is a message telling me that "your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." What do I do I had 16,000 pictures.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I synced my new iPad with my new macbook and when I tried to then sync my iPhone as well it says that all apps will be replaced with apps in my library. How do I sync without losing all of my existing iPhone apps?

My guess is that you previously synced the iPhone with a different computer in the past. You will probably want to set up Home Sharing.
