Site Redesign Production Tips

A new version of one my sites is being developed in a
subfolder of my webserver.
The old site layout had image folders under a folder for each
section.
The new site will use a central images folder - paths will
have to be changed by hand.
How can Dreamweaver help me (automate?) find those image
files and COPY them to the new location?

  • Your opinion of my site redesign

A year or so ago I designed a site basically in Fireworks. I
didn't really know what I was doing. So, I know a little more now,
and I redesigned the site. I am curious of your opinions on the
site and what I could improve on.
    Original site:
    http://www.genesiscounselingcenter.com
    Redesigned site:
    http://www.robbieleffel.com/temp/genesis
Also, what is the rule when it comes to putting your
name/design comp name at the bottom of a site you design? And how
    big, noticeable, etc??
    Thanks for your feedback!

    Um Rob....
The sites you have designed here are just images - 800x600.
Theres little to no html content what so ever.
Did you miss the part about slicing, and inserting it into
    your html?
I don't mean to be nasty, but all of the pages on those sites
    are just a
single image - thats generally 'not' how its done in this
    industry.

  • Can I create a development environment for a site redesign?

I need to redesign my site templates and eventually move all pages to the new design. Is there an easy way to do this with BC?
Can I export my current site and edit it locally for example?

Make a duplicate of your site in the partner portal (new site based one existing) and work on that and then port over all the new files/pages etc.
How you exactly do it depends on your file setup and what you need to change.

  • Site redesign

    Hi Folks,
I need to redesign the hompage to my site:
    www.halesowen.ac.uk
I've been told the news sections need to be bigger. I've
tried scrapping the area on the right with the search, and
extending the news sections across the rest of the page, but it
    just look unbalanced.
    Can anyone help?
The navigation has to stay where it is, moving it anywhere
else would be a major headache.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thankyou

The way I would approach this is to first decide my minimum
    width and
that would be within pixels of what you now have. I think you
    are 760
pixels wide and you probably can go 770 wide.
I would lose the bullets on the main menu on the left, the
    menu items
start about 24 pixels right of the edge of the screen and
    that's a bit
more than you need. Say you have 8 pixels breathing room to
    the left
of the menu and widen to 770, now you've got 26 pixels more
    room,
which isn't a lot, but it should help.
The right-hand column is about 166 pixels wide; you could
    tighten that
up if you lost the bullets. You could also not do the column
    (or div
or whatever it is), but instead put that right-side content
    in a
right-floated blockquote; that would free up the space below
    it,
should the content end up shorter.
I would also play with the middle content; I think the area
    under
College News just makes the page feel boxy.
    Hope this helps!

  • Site for Greenscreen Tips & More

Robodog just posted this LINK to a site dedicated to all things greenscreen. Might be of interest to anyone contemplating shooting greenscreen.
One trick that they mention is shooting the standing greenscreen actor "vertically," to utilize all of the sensor. This will fill the Frame with the actor better, but obviously, the footage will need to be Rotated for use in post production.
Hope that some find this of interest,

  • In our web site the product sort order under our categories are random with Firefox but IE, Chrome is alright, any ideas?

The sort order of products under our categories on our web site is random with Firefox, but the categories with products are in the correct order with IE, Chrome, etc. This incorrect order with Firefox occurs on various computers, i.e. Windows 7, XP, etc. and is not consistent. To make matters worse, sometimes it is random with Firefox and then returns to being correctly sorted but IE, Chrome, etc. are always in the correct order.

Works fine here for me, even after refreshing.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

  • Production tips for multi language titles...Arabic plus others...

I am teaching a DVDSP course with a student who will produce multi language titles. Arabic is the primary with French, German, and English as the alternates.
I follow the scripting ideas to test for which language the users select but I have a question on the menu production process.
    Is it this?
Set language on Mac to Arabaic-Author this menu set-likely 2-3 menus
    Save work
Switch language set to German-Author the same menu sets
    Save work
    Ditto for French and English.
Switch back to Arabic and finish the project.
    Or this?
Graphic buttons with 3 states each for German, French and English? Accept the issues with layered menus.
    Happy Holidays!

    Michael Mizen wrote:
    Set language on Mac
Sorry Michael, but what exactly do you mean by that? And why would you need layered menus?
In my book there are three approaches to the task.
First: create 4 language folders in the project for Arabic, French, German and English. Create identical graphics and overlays for each menu set, except of course text which will be different for each language. Import them into DVD SP and change project language for each set to put menus in place. Make sure your VTSM does not go over 1 Gig. Author the DVD.
The only problem with this approach is the user settings on a DVD player. If the user never bothered to change from default English to anything else, then only English menus will be displayed.
Second: Create all your menus (in different VTSMs if you like, especially if content differs. It is not necessarily to do so). Create "Master" menu with language choices. Branch from it to language sets. Use "Display condition" in the advanced tab for tracks and menus for navigation tracking. Saves tons of redundant scripting.
Third: Script your menus for tracking and re-directing navigation to the correct language of user choice. The only way for Spec authoring environments such as Scenarist.
Needless to say the menus should be created outside of DVD SP
Good luck to you and your student, and happy Holidays.

  • Safari crashes at so many sites. Any tips?

I've had my Macbook since Christmas 2007 with very few problems. However, lately, Safari has been crashing at many websites including hotmail, facebook, ebay, and more. I'm away that hotmail and Safari never been good friends (and my HTTP mail plug-in stopped working for my Mail app so I can't check my hotmail through Mail but that's a whole other problem) but now it's crashing at random spots. I noticed it crashes whenever I'm filling in a form. For example, it crashed when I try to login to hotmail and face after typing in my login and password, it crashed on urbanoutfitters.com while I was trying to place an order and was typing in my shipping information, it crashed on ebay when I was typing in a form, etc. It's become very frustrating. I've emptied my cache, fiddled with my cookies settings, etc. Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks for any help!

If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2008-001.
As Leopard also uses Safari 3.0.4, much of the above may well also apply to Leopard, but is not guaranteed. Moreover:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Safari in Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:

  • "My Adobe" site is permanently redirected to "Adobe ID" site. There is no way to retrieve serial numbers for CS 5.5 products and below.

How can I get my serial number for CS 5.5 Master Collection and CS 5.5 Captivate? This was retrievable only a few days ago using the "My Adobe" site at (adobe.com/account.html)
The My Adobe URL (adobe.com/account.html) has a permanent redirect to the new Adobe ID URL (accounts.adobe.com/) Just a few days ago, Adobe "My Products and Services" contained my collection of serials.Users now cannot access this URL at adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html with the redirect in place.
The new Adobe ID site "My Products" at (accounts.adobe.com/products) reports "You have no registered products." We need the "My Adobe" classic site back to access our registered serials.
Adobe should update their help documentation that references the old link (adobe.com/account.html) as well. Here are a couple of examples:
Where is My Adobe account info | How to sign in/out « Caveat Lector
Serial number, Redemption, and Product codes | Student & Teacher Editions

https://accounts.adobe.com/products shows all my products with their serial numbers back to 2005 when I first registered PSE2.0 that came bundled with my camera, and the two example pages with old links properly redirect to the Plans page and all I have to do is click View all products and again I will see my list back to 2005.
So things are working just fine for me.  If it says you have no products, maybe there are changes still percolating through the server network that aren’t in place from where you’re surfing from, or maybe you have multiple AdobeIDs and are signed into the one that doesn’t have products registered to it.
In other words, things appear to be working just fine with my AdobeID using either the old links or the new links and so I’d reword the request to be that you want the new site to work properly.   The old site did have another layout that required clicking into each product to see the serial number whereas the new site list everything on one page without clicking into anything.  I prefer the new way.

  • Can I merge a site from pre-production with the content already in production - ALM query

Hi, I have a number of queries around the movement of content between environments in SP2010.
    1) Move a site from production to test without the production data
Is the best option here to save the site as a template and don't tick the include content box? Or is it better to take a site collection backup and then restore it to the test environment.
    2) Once I have my site in test is there any way I can make changes, then move the site back to production while still maintaining the production data?
I don't know how this would work but maybe there is a way somehow. Say for example the site has been modified in test such as adding new site columns or content types, how should this be deployed to production? Is it simply a matter of replicating all the
    changes manually to production?
It would be useful to get some best practices around this topic. Thanks.

    Hi Speedbird85,
This is depend the changes you need to move.
For empty or small sites, using site template can meet the requirement, you can consider using this.
Backup and move the content database between environment will lost production changes, this is not really recommended, if you keep the test environment update to date with production, you can use this way.
For kinds of changes move, there are various ways to sync the conent, like lists, master pages, css, etc. should be packaged in solution file, and deploy it between them.

  • Struggling to migrate sharepoint sites developed on dev or qa over to production

So, user 1 comes along and wants to put together a new site. He wants to use SharePoint Designer to set up pretty colors, create a new theme and use it, create a series of custom lists, etc.
Meanwhile, on these same machines, there is a variety of InfoPath development occurring by developer 2. The development is going on in a different site collection than user 1 is using.
User 1 gets to the point where he wants to migrate the minty fresh sharepoint site from dev to production.
He creates a template with content.
He copies it over to the production system. When he attempts to use it, he gets an error saying that Feature '{gobblidy gook}' is not found.
We look at features turned on, and the out of the box features are the same.
HOWEVER, the dev system has quite a number of dev instances of the InfoPath apps as they have gone through the "code, test, fix" cycle.
It appears to me that the issue is that the template is listing every one of those InfoPath forms as a requirement.
There's no way that I am interested in broken or incomplete InfoPath features being installed into production.
It appears to me that the user is stuck recreating the dev site on production.
That seems terribly inefficient to me.  The entire template concept is pretty screwed up if templates uploaded to one site collection become required in another.
I presume that one or more of us - user 1, developer 2, or myself - is missing some critical bit of information that would make these things work.
Or is this really the kind of limitation by which others using InfoPath are hindered?

Where can I find those best practices?
Before we started using SharePoint, we always had at least dev, qa, and production machines where things being developed would start out and migrate through.
I suspect there would be a lot of resistance to giving all users their own VMs as well as their own SharePoint farms to work under, and I expect that attempting to move InfoPath apps from an individual's environment would have the exact same problem as we
are encountering - a developer wants to iterate through a series of unit testing before they consider an application (ie InfoPath form) stable enough to undergo testing by a group of stakeholders. Thus things created on the dev machine will have dependencies
on "features" (aka the individual test versions of the InfoPath form) that would not be installed on the stakeholder's test machine, and the last stable version on the test machine would have dependencies on versions that would not be promoted to
    production.
developing on production has the issue of having to work in parallel with the previous stable version of the application, without causing the users of the stable version issues.

  • Actual site URL in the production server?

We have published one site from management to production. How do we access the actual site from production? What will be the URL to access the site?
    Thanks
    Arijit
N.B. We can access the page from management server using the below url:
    http://<ManagementHost>:<ManagementPort>/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=<SiteName>%2FABPageTemplate&cid=<pageId>&pagename=FSIIWrapper

    Hi Arijit,
Production URl's can also be accessed just like you access management url. like-
http://<prod host>:<prod port>/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=<SiteName>%2FABPageTemplate&cid=<pageId>&pagename=FSIIWrapper. This can be used for testing purpose only, accessing production in this way is not recommended.
There are many options to manage URL's in production like implementing Friendly URL's, using webserver redirection etc.. your site name must be configured in the webserver.
Also CatalogManager and TreeManager servlets should be disabled in the production.
    Thanks,
    Harish

  • Problem with viewing web site- feedback needed

I have a friend who had his site redesigned and integrated with Paypal recently.
He is a Windows user and I am a Mac user.
For some reason I am unable to view the blue Buy Now buttons on his site and if i keep trying long enough the browser will suddenly tell me that the site server cannot be found.
I was told by paypal that it was a cookie problem but i completly cleared out everything and it still does not work.
I have tried both IE and Firefox. IE will work for me sometimes, but once the problem begin happening in Firefox then IE stops working also.
I have also tried using my PC and if i use it before the Mac, i can see it fine but if the Mac starts messing things up i will no longer be able to view it on my PC. I called a friend while having this problem and he said he could see it fine on his PC (not Mac).
I am beginning to think that it is a wireless network problem since i have tried everything else i can think of.
Could some of you please view this page and just let me know if you have any problem seeing the two top Buy Now buttons?
Please also let me know what browsers you used...
The BUY NOW buttons in question should be just below the Download buttons...
Please give me some feedback. This will help me decide if it is a local issue or not.
    URL for the page is:

Thanks, this would be a great help to my diagnosis 8-)
