Size of OVI

How on earth has Nokia managed to build as stupid program as OVI SUITE.
I installed it to my PC. Next time I booted my PC, it took trmendous time to get up. Ovi suite ate over 80% of the resources and over 110MB of the memory !
1. Why it loads itself as a TSR. It should load and start only when I need it !
2. How have they managed to build it so large. I have seen programs about 10% in size making much more complicated tasks.
3. What the hell is it doing there when the PC is starting. Nobody wants to wait minutes just to get a program loaded to the memory. Specially so, if they don't need it.
I gave an alert to our computer center to remove this stupidity from all our computers.

I do not know all the reasons Nokia has for making this program so bad. However programmatically they have choosen to design Ovi using Trolltech framework.
http://qt.nokia.com/
Idea was that Ovi suite could run on several platforms like Mac and Unix. (which it doesn´t) The idea is there, but that is on expense of Lots of Ram usage and speed degradations and lack of device drivers.
Why didn´t they just make in this plain C,C++ and C# - This would satisfy the first 90% of the potential userbase.
Well Ovi Suite still sucks big time - giving Nokia a bad name, and a lot of users are running to the new HTC phones.

  • How to install ovi suite to a drive other than C:?...

how to install ovi suite to a drive other than c:??? my c: drive is almost full with other partitions perfectly free to install it, how do i do that? can i use previous versions of ovi suite to use with my e63? at this point, i'm unable to use ovi suite at all, because there's no room to install it on my c: drive.
allllllllso there's one more thing, when i originally had tried installing ovi suite on my computer i had more than 1gb free. after installing it i on'ly had 500mb free. i had only intended for it to use a very small amount of space, and since i also use my c: drive for virtual memory i quickly uninstalled it, looking for an option i'd maybe skipped over while installing it the first time. no luck. anyways, when i looked in the add/remove programs control panel the installed size of ovi suite was only 40-50mb. even after uninstalling ovi suite the extra memory space that seemed to all of a sudden taken up by the installation stayed used.
when looking at the file sizes of everything on my hard drive, (including system files and paging file) there is still a descreprency between the amount of memory used and the size of all files total on the drive. at this point im quite disgusted and disapointed in ovi suite as i'm mostly unable to use it to connect my phone to my computer and i'm also having problems with the CA101 cable as well. i guess i'll have to go check for another cable.
nokia!!! wake up and fix yo **bleep**!!!!
anyone have any solutions for the main problem? (installing to a drive other than c? is there support for this option in any of the new beta versions? can that be included in the newest betas? i'm suuuuuure i'm not the only one begging for this option!!!

Hi ostrenga4, sorry to hear about your experiences.
When installing Nokia Ovi Suite to PC, Windows makes "system restoration points", which are available to restore operating system to previous condition, if something goes wrong, for example in driver installation.
You can change install location of Nokia Ovi Suite with following:
    - Download Nokia Ovi Suite install package from Nokia Ovi Suite pages
    - Start Windows Command prompt
    - From Command prompt, navigate to folder containing Nokia Ovi Suite install package, which you downloaded
    - Start Nokia Ovi Suite install package with command line "Nokia_Ovi_Suite_webinstaller.exe /TARGET="D:\TestDir\Test"
    - This results, that Nokia Ovi Suite installer creates folder D:\TestDir\Test (if that doesn't exist) and installs Nokia Ovi Suite there.
    - Unfortunately, Windows Installer still keeps installer cache files and system restoration points in C: drive (or whatever your system drive is)
As you can see, this is possible, but it is very much recommend to have enough space for installing software into system drive.
    Cheers, Samuli

  • Share Ovi - Images original size on the embed code

Everytimg I upload images on my Share on Ovi account ("chaplin") I upload multiple files so I can keep the original size of the images, but then when I copy the embed code it is only available in a very small size and I can't make it bigger. Isn't it possible to do like in the beggining of Share on Ovi, in which we could choose the size of the images? I would love to use Share on Ovi to share my files on my blog/website but this way I can't do it instead of other services like flickr, etc.
    Best regards,

Could it be possible someone from Nokia to respond to my posts please!?

  • OVI backup .nbu file size does not match actual da...

    Hi,
I just backed up my phone through the Ovi Suite. The backup was VERY fast (compared to previous backups doen in earlier versions of Ovi Suite) probably due to the new fixed version of Ovi Suite.
Anyway... The backup file (.nbu) is almost 1.85 GB but when I browse my phone (in My Computer folder) and do 'Select All' the size of the data on my Phone Mass Memory reads 2.44 GB.......
SO.... is the backup data in the .nbu file somehow compressed?? Or maybe incomplete?
    Thank you

Not sure but..My 1.7 GB (Phone) is equivalent to 0.6 GB (PC) .. but I have done restore without anything missing out..
The phones OS related files may not be getting Backed-up..

  • My Ovi suite windows are the wrong size

Hello I hope someone can help. When I sync my phone with ovi suite there are certain things I can't do because the windows that appear are too small to click on the 'update' button.
For instance, when I first log on, the button that says 'sync now' is in a window in the middle of the screen but the button is three quarters cut off. Fortunately I can click on it and perform the action. But when I try to get software updates, the window is again not sized correctly so that I can't click on the button which allows me to get application updates.
I have had this issue with certain websites in the past and it is solved by fiddling with the view parameters in the browser, but I can't see why it's happening with ovi suite.
I am using the latest ovi suite with Windows 7.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The issue of the window size not being remembered is purely app specific, Ovi suite ALWAYS opens the same window size when it starts, no mattter what it was before.
It also has nothing to do with the OS and screen resolution, (we run OVi SUite at work on various OSes and configurations), but only with the developers who are either to lazy or too incompetent to write the few lines of code required to remember window size,

  • E5: Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device...

I am trying to update the software on my E5 using OVI suite but I keep getting an error during the install phase (after backup). The following error and instructions are displayed in the OVI suite window but makes no difference when I follow these instructions (just end up back with the same error).
"Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device. Follow these steps to help reconnect your device:
    1. Remove USB cable from your device.
    2. Restart the device (turn off and on again).
    3. Re-insert the USB cable.
    4. Click 'Ok' below to continue updating."
Current E5 software version is 042.007.
I am trying to update to E5 software v. 043.115
    Any ideas?

Yep having the same issue. Just got a replacement handset due to the random restarting issue, soon after setting up the new handset I get a message on phone saying software update is available. Both OVI suite and Nokia software updater say version 43.115 is available (about 200mb in size), I currently have the same version as you 42.007. It claims to do a lot of improvements to the handset. The update downloads fine but when it comes to installing I keep getting the same issue. Phone simply will not restart automatically and the update restarts then fails at the same point over and over. Had the same problem with my previous handset.
I spoke with my network provider to see if it was an issue with the handset needing firmware specific to them but they said no it is an issue with the firmware itself and has been happening to everyone since its release!!! They said I should not download it until Nokia has resolved the issues with it. But how do I know when that will happen as I cannot find anything put out by Nokia stating there is an issue or anywhere on web forums saying there is actually a problem.

  • Syncing issues, Ovi Suite on Windows 7: Some sugge...

Hi. I was complaining on my twitter about Ovi's last release and someone asked me to report about my experiences here. For most of the issues I did a workaround by myself but I think that I'll not be the only one reporting them and experiencing the same problems, so I'd like to show my thoughts as a suggestion for the next releases.
When I started Ovi Suite after the installation to explore the changes, I had a massive system slowdown and I'm running a Core 2 Quad! Then I realized that Ovi was indexing ALL of my PC musics and photos, including subfolders.
Ok, that's what the software was designed for, the problem is that I have over 30GB of images on my Pictures folder and 22GB on Music. I never checked to immediate syncing when my device is connected neither search my local library, but I just clicked on Music tab and my PC went to a extreme slowdown, NokiaMServer.exe on top CPU usage and crashed. It got worse when I connected my Nokia: It forced to sync the entire 22GB Music files on a 8GB SD! Someone missed a condition there to check if the device has enough space!
I'm not discussing how I sync my music files but I download a lot of 320kb bitrate songs which each one has 11~25MB so as my headphones won't play a louder sound than any 96KB AAC, I convert all that I want to hear on my device and just drag and drop with all of metatags including album covers, works for me. From now I'll put all of my converted files on a specific folder, sync with Ovi and keep everything organized BUT why the hell isn't there a screen asking me to select the default folders for syncing on the first run?
...And the same thing happened to my pictures, just a little bit worse. My system was crashing, Windows Explorer crashed, NokiaMServer went to 25% CPU usage on Task Manager because of thumbnail processing! Really, why the hell would I like to put my entire Pictures folder on my cellphone, especially huge files?
To stop Music indexing, I just selected all songs and deleted them from the Ovi's database/collection without messing with my iTunes library (though some metatags and album covers were corrupted) but for the pictures, deleting 35MB from catalog on my own computer lasted longer than using Bluetooth or the old Nokia Phone Browser to send a 100MB file!
Removing the folders from "folder-watch" or changing the library addresses over the Options should clean Ovi's library/collection but it didn't worked, Ovi kept adding pictures and songs. The only way to stop the ridiculous thumbnail processing (from pictures which I also moved to another folder just in case) was deleting "\AppData\Roaming\Nokia\Intellisync", "\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Data Store" and "\AppData\Roaming\Nokia\Ovi Suite" and seting Ovi's to sync to another folder.
I know that there's a lot of people that don't put that amount of files on Windows default documents folders but I can't understand why this software is so slow for simple commands that other softwares can do better! Even the old PC Suite with Nokia Phone Browser was faster when copying or moving a file to another folder and now it's not even modifying or sending files, it is only reading and indexing!
So, I think that it's not much to ask to Nokia/Ovi developers:
    1. Let users choose the default folders for syncing BEFORE start syncing.
    2. Faster indexing and exclusion for Ovi's library. Don't waste time processing a half-screen-sized thumbnail, just show a 128x128 and if the user wants to see the full-sized picture, make Ovi launch system's default picture viewer/editor. After all, your own pictures don't have DRM...
    3. Nokia Music: Can someone explain me how to lock that damn scroll-bar? Because when I'm exploring my songs suddenly the bar goes back to the top! If you want to make a stylish scroll-bar, fine, but please, make it functional as a normal scroll-bar! Otherwise use system's default!
    4. Again about Nokia Music: Something I thought it was nice was letting users choose what application they wanted to use for syncing songs, because some legacy devices don't work with Nokia Music and transferring files from Nokia Music Manager was faster because you didn't had to change you connection type from PC Suite to Media Device. Fortunately for me, iTunes AAC format works fine to reduce disk usage on my devices, but it would nice if Ovi could convert songs for a smaller file size as Music Manager did.
     5. I'm also experiencing some random nokiaaserver.exe crashes without any Nokia application running at the same time.
That's all. I hope someone read it and understand my point of view.

use this version. it has most of the bugs fixed...
keep in mind that if you are using a win 764bit, there are still issues with crashing.

  • Can't Download Maps To X6 With Ovi

    Hi there.
I've had my X6 for a few days now, and I'll be going on a trip, so I want to try out the Ovi Maps. I have installed  all software from the CD that came with my X6 and I have the latest versions of Ovi Suite and PC Suite on my Computer. The phone's maps application is also updated. When I connect the phone everything seems to work fine. My contacts, pictures and messages are transfered, but if I go to the Maps it says that It can't find any maps or voice guidance files on my phone. I figured that it may not be looking in the right place, so I went to the options and went to Maps. Even while my phone was connected it said that it can't find a supported device. I tried connecting the phone to another USB port, but I get the same problem. I always make sure I have Maps running on the phone, but for some reason this doesn't work. People have told me it's a Windows 7 issue, but I tried this on XP, and I couldn't even get to this part, because it refused to get the driver installs right. Can anyone help? I am really interested in Ovi Maps and would love to try it.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There was a satellite signal bar on the bottom left prior to V3.04. This has been replaced by the red dot and "Halo". The way it works is, the red dot flashes until position fix is achieved. Then the bigger the halo the weaker the signal because the size of the halo marks the possible margin for error.

  • Ovi map search offline problem

Whenever I search for a location offline on my E72, I end up with no results available.
After fiddling with my phone for the better half of a day (including first using online search then turning off the internet to use offline search), I tried deleting all the maps on my memory card and installing only the maps for the areas I need through the OVI suite. Having read earlier threads on this topic, I was sure to wait until the index files were fully transferred.
Now the offline search works, but only for locations within my own city. For locations in the neighboring city, though only a few dozen miles away, I end up again with no results available.
Is this normal or is there any other way I can try fixing it? Thanks.

    Hi sherryglass
Unfortunately I think it is also related to size of country, as with world maps on E72 I can do detailed search of UK "Offline" but say for example USA it has to be "Online"; that said access point in OVI Maps application can be via WLAN or network.

  • What happened to ability to upload to ovi share fr...

    as the subject says?
Recently got the m8. And on my older 5800 (piece of garbage) i was able to upload my photo to my ovi share account right after i took it, or from the gallery. And i was able to create new upload content to flickr and ovi share from an application called share that was a Rom application on most my previous symbian phones back to n95.
What happened to share application? The social app is a joke. Only has ability to use twitter and facebook, and very poorly to i might add. Why can't we make flickr and ovi profiles like we used to? Or better still, where the hell is the ovi share app gone?
i dont want to post my photos on facebook or twitter, I've been using ovi share to store all my photos and some video's and lots of ringtones since it started.
I need the ovi share app back. I need to be able to upload my photo to my ovi share account when i take it or from my gallery, not facebook or twitter,
used to be so great. Simple photo storage with one click. Even used to upload in the background so you can carry on taking photos.
This n8 dissapoints more and more every day. Nokia are failing. Nokia are getting owned by a company that don't know anything at all about phones. I talk of apple of course with there iphone. Apple created a flawless facebook app. And a flawless youtube app. And even an incredibly fast flawless web browser based on the exact same source code as Nokia very poor attempt on m8. Safari web kit i talk about. What the hell is up with that? Nokia been in the mobile phone industry since the start. Dam they made them as popular as they are today. But now they have sold out and getting whiped by apple.
Anyway. Give me ovi share application for n8 please to start with. Then try and make a youtube app on par with the iphone's. Then try making facebook app that is as good or better than iphone. And most important thing of all, make a web browser that people can use. This n8 browser is exactly same as one on my 5800. Only the 5800 version worked. So many bad things on n8. Hope they are working on those things I've mentioned or i could be cutting my sim card down to size to use in my iphone4 permanatly.

Nothing happened to File Sharing but the appearance of iTunes has changed. It confused me at first also. Here's how to do it.
Are you looking in the right place to find the shared files on your Mac?
First thing you need to do is on your iPad. Share the files you want to transfer by selecting Share > iTunes.
Start iTunes on your Mac. Is it iTunes 11? If so use the View menu in iTunes to select View Sidebar.
Then connect your iPad to your Mac.
Select your iPad in the left sidebar.
Select Apps in the row of tabs in the right window of iTunes.
Scroll down under Apps to the File Sharing section. It is below the complete list of apps.
You should see a list of the shared files or a folder that contains the files. Use the Copy To... Button ( if there is one ) to copy the shared files to your Mac.
The problem I had originally was the scrolling. There are two windows of apps. Each window can scroll within its own window. So scrolling n the tp window of apps will get you to the bottom of that window but not down to the next section which is the file sharing area. Scroll by using the outer most scroll bar if you have one or if in Mountain Lion place the cursor near the left edge of the apps area to scroll to the lower File Sharing area.

  • Ovi Suite install problems..

Hey ATN NOKIA CODERS! All I am trying to do is browse my backed up .nbu files but its getting silly, I shoot video clips on latest firmware and boy the camera startup is much faster I voice record wavs on my N95 and I have just tried NOKI a nice free to try app for doing just this, but no thumbnail pics of the videos and cant drag them onto say Media Player Classic or Double click to run the chosen video or wav file soo!
I have just downloaded the longwinded and large install called Ovi Suite, Microsoft Windows Media Center Failed to load error with server timeout.. great start! not! everything else installed except for oh Ovi Suite! so after its done installing Nokia Music and Photo Gallery (which wasnt as painful as installing microsofts Photo Gallery!) I hit the Synch button and crossed my fingers but when it got upto 33 images out of 197 and it died trying to transfer the videos as they showed no Preview thumbnails just blank ones and it crashed haha. in fairness I need to reboot. but I tried to run the Ovi install again to have a go at re-trying the missing errored timed out apps, but it did not show the Windows Media update or the Ovi Guide Install that failed to install, going into C:\windows\programfiles\Nokia folder I am able to sart Nokia Photo Gallery and Music and tried to goto Nokia Music site as i make music and want to submit my own tracks to sell but even that errored with server errors. try again later. will report more later, happy new year!

"mistakes i've made a few... " err above post further down the page I call Ovi Suite "Ovi Guide" sorry easily done with my dislexia and bad spalling.
Ok Ovi Suites "Photo Gallery" is a pile of over inflated nonsense!!146MBs!?? I gave it a fair go and i have maxed out my ram so when I say starting Photo Gallery was slow and very painful it was very slow and very painful. The Green Ovi flash screen did not disapear for about 3 minutes. I have less than 100 pics and about 10 videos so nothing scary to deal with. Dosnt work half as well as Nokia Video Manager in PC Suite 7.1 so credit is due to Video Manager. Nokia Photo Gallery has been Uninstalled. and Nokia Music for the same reasons, it crashed trying to link to its music shop, not good. it's only at 1.1 so theres time and room for improvement so I will keep an eye on it. I now use freeware "Irfan View" free app off www.filehippo.com 1.48mbs! not 146MBs. With Irfan View installed it simply does a great job of displaying picks and videos in a thumbnail style that is very customisable so I can have black frames with black backgrounds. Videos can be dragged into Media Player Classic. Perfect simple and small in size and well coded, starts instantly. PC Suite 7.1 is great for browsing vides but NOT from .nbu's if it could it would be perfect. It's the best all rounder from Nokia yet and theres always "Noki" for browsing .nbu files.

  • Ovi Suite 2.0 no photo view in grid mode

Hi I have the latest Ovi Suit and I am connecting my 5800 music express. Once the photoes are synched with my computer only a small version of the actual images is imported  (3KB per image). I am sure that the version on the phone is about 550KB in size. Also when I come to view the images in view thumbnails no preview is avalable of the images. The low res picture comes visible only in vew single photo mode.
Is this a software bug or do I have some wrong settings ?
    Regards
    Rodrick Borg
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry for this mess. There was a bug in the photo import from some devices that has now been fixed but the damage done by those faulty imports does not correct itself in the database.
The safest way to re-import the photos is to do it manually, that way you will know what has changed.
Open Ovi Suite and connect your device (preferably with USB, BT also works but it will take longer).
Go to the photos view and check from the device view (select from lower left pane titled "Photos in <device name>" the "All" folder) that your images are visible there.
For each image you want to restore, go to the PC view (select from upper left pane titled "Photos" the "All" folder) and find the corresponding image on the PC. If you can't see thumbnails for the images on the PC then you will have to find the correct thumbnail by checking the filenames that appear on mouse roll-over or by left-clicking and selecting "Properties".
Delete the image from the PC view (press DEL key, left-click and selecte "Delete" or drag and drop to the "Deleted photos" folder). Note that this doesn't actually delete anything, it just prevents the image being shown in Ovi Suite.
Select the "Deleted photos" folder from the upper left pane
Select the image you just deleted and delete it again. Be sure to choose "Yes" when asked if you want to delete the file from the computer.
Now you can manually import the image from the phone.
Select the photo from the device view (from lower left pane titled "Photos in <device name>", "All" folder)
Drag and drop the image on the "All" folder of the PC navigation pane (upper left pane)
You should see a progress bar for the import and the thumbnail and correct image should then be available in the PC.
Once you get the idea of what to do you can also use multi-select (Ctrl-click) to delete and re-import serveral images at a time.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ovi contacts , feedback and Suggestions to improve...

Hi, I'm sorry if this not the perfect sub-forum to but this article in. However I have use Ovi Contacts and I love it but I find things which can improve the service.
I'd love to add this features:
Support groups: I can Create a group, send the link, Invention, Group ID for my friend to join us.
Quick Smiles: small button to show the smiles quickly without needing to open the app menu then select add smile.
Typing messagehow If the other one typing now or not.
Support sending a broadcast: Broadcast for all my contacts on few clicks.
Support sharing files: Share a photo, song with my friends quickly and easily, Also enable the ability to open the contact photo enlarge if I want that.
Sort by option: support sorting by Name, Sex, age, status, etc..
Block feature: a timed block job to block some one who I wont to talk with at the moment.
Change that chat background and fonts: Support changing background from the basic one to the active theme default background and solid colors, Also support change font color and size (In 5800 its a kind of small, At least big as the system size)
Also I tried to install it in the first week after produce it as a beta in E71 , I have these problems (Maybe it was fixed already in the last version):
Error when typing a non-English numbers as a username
Error If my email contact a "-" or a "_"!!
Sometimes after searching for a contact the result message not appears.
That's all what I have in this moment, Please make a reply with what you think.

I guess it would also be nice to see a forum for all apple users to input their ideas. One where Developers would go to see them as well. This would give all Apple users a place to share their wish lists and see what others have as input.

  • [INFO TIPS] How to survive with Ovi Maps 3.0 insta...

Quick info tips. I wanna made this post earlier but I was on few days trip so didn't have a chance... but it's good coz I was tested GPS in real touristic environment.
I'm from Europe so I don't know how all links posted below will be works for people outside Europe.
My hardware: E63 with latest firmware + external GPS module LD-4W
Everything what we do here, we do with phone connected to the PC via USB cable in PC Suite mode and with fully battery charged.
If you have Maps 2.0, everything works well for you and you payed for any of licences - better stay with that version and don't touch Ovi Maps 3.0. Waste of time and nerves.
    1. Please make phone data backup in PC Suite. Please make data backup of your memory card.
    2. Check if you have firmware upgrade for your phone (click on some icon in PC Suite). But if you have cracked Symbian and you using cracked software better stay away from firmware upgrade. There's new cracking method for newest firmwares, ask Google. I don't use it, I'm clean. If you have new firmware - update the phone.
    3. Download MapLoader - http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download-maps/map-loader Do fresh install or update old MapLoader
    4. Bluetooth MUST BE turn in phone. Why? Ask Nokia. -_- Just kidding but unfortunately it's not funny. Without Bluetooth Ovi Maps 3.0 installed in next step (6.) is crazy as hell. Application is completly unusable, skipping, switching... one big hell on the screen. I don't know how it looks like in phones with build in GPS module.
    5. Download Ovi Maps 3.0 - http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download-maps and update with this installer old Maps 2.0 in the phone.
    6. Run Ovi Maps 3.0 and allow to download via Internet connection in your phone (wifi, gsm, 3g) some portion of initial data - 300 or 400kB - something like that, up to 1MB maximum then disconnect from Internet. It's needed to save some file (I don't remember name) and make structure of catalogues on memory card.
    7. Leave Ovi Maps 3.0 and run MapLoader. This application is one big pain in **bleep**. Sometimes doesn't see your phone, sometimes doesn't recognize correctly your memory card size (when you are finished downloading your map/s data that stupid soft can say to you "you don't have" or something like that)... horrible! If something goes wrong - try restart your PC and phone then connect again via USB cable - still in PC Suite mode.
    8. When luckily you have maps on your phone, try to pair your phone with your GPS module via Bluetooth or turn on build in module in other models (I think it works like that?).
    9. When you will be look out for licence for walk navigation... you cannot find it. You can see only your region name (in my case it was Europe) and you have an option to buy... licenses for drivers. ROTFL!  Licence for walk navigation is "hidden option". You must go here - http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/product-support/maps-support/how-to/how-to--use-map... - it's mini FAQ how to obtain it.
What I see, there's NO MORE free trial licenses in Maps v3.0 You must pay from day one. I buyed that licence for walk navigation for 10,12E (10 euro 12 euro cents) and it's not time restricted - looks like lifetime, ofc for the phone that you use (I think). Other licenses (for drivers) are time restricted (30 days and up as I remember).
Everything works fine for me. I was over 220km away from my hometown in awesome town Wrocław and Ovi Maps 3.0 helps me A LOT with navigation and searching for monuments in this town.

Because maybe you must be format memory card for proper maps installation (instead upgrade from Ovi Maps 3.0 installation level old installed maps from v2.0).
