SJSWS 7.0U1 - Resets Permissions on Deploy Changes

I have several web server configurations (single instance of each config, no additional virtual servers), and since each config belongs to a different client/user:group, the permissons on the config directory are set to reflect these ownerships, mostly user-only-accessible.
For admin purposes, I like to modify (loosen) these permissions to make them group-accessible (to the admin group). Whether or not this is a particularly good idea could be a discussion for another day :-)
My problem is that each time I make changes to a configuration, the act of deploying the changes to the web server instance (using the GUI/Admin Console) resets the ownerships & permissions in the config directory to be user-accessible to the client user:group, i.e. as it was at creation.
This means I then have to change ownership/permissions to get back to (my idea of) a correct configuration.
Is there any way to either:
1. Prevent SJSWS from doing this in the first place, or
2. Trigger my script to reset permissions after deployment
I'm probably onto a loser here, but I figured I ask in case anyone else has tripped over this and discovered a solution!
Thanks for any input.

  • Mac won't start following change of permissions. I have started In recovery and run repair disk and reset permissions to all disks inc backups. What do I do now to get the mac up and running without loosing thousands of pics and all other data? I

The problems occurred after photoshop elements said I did not have the necessary permissions to save changes to a photo. I then allowed all to permissions to all disks, I have three external hard drives but I cannot restore from any as they all appear to have some kind of problem. I have repaired all disks in recovery mode and verified all inc mac hd. All permissions are repaired and all disks are saying repaired. So where do I go from here to get the mac back on running mavericks without loosing thousands of photos and all other data ?
Do I need to reinstall Mac OS ?
The only options I get to reinstall is mountain lion?.. I have been running the latest mavericks .?.
Do I reinstall and then update?
The external drives are not smart drives so how do I ensure I retain all my files?

your best option is to connect an external drive and reinstall OS X on that external to run the system from. then copy all your files over to the new install for safe keeping. then try doing a reinstall of Mavericks over the top of the current install on the internal drive and test.

  • File ownership changes on deploy changes

In my web server 7.0 environment everything installed with owner:group of webservd:webservd. This is fine.
I am using Cgistub and executing all cgi scripts by a different system user. I need to do this to execute ssh, because I don't want to give webservd ssh access.
All cgi scripts must be owned and executed by sshuser:other. This work great.
However, each time I deploy [any] changes (from the Web Server Console) to the configuration, every file and directory is reset back to webservd:webservd.
Is there a way to turn off this behavior? I need to keep ownership from changing when I deploy changes (which is very often these days.)
    Thanks,
    Mike

Applying my new understanding I created a new Document Root for everything served up that is completely outside the instance directory structure.
Configurations > configuration > Virtual Servers > virtualserver
Document Root (enter new doc root)
    Save
    Deploy
Everything works as I expect it to and no code changes we needed. And deploying changes do not reset ownership back to webservd in the new doc root.
So if the user running the web server is NOT the user you want running cgi scripts, etc., create a separate area for them.
I like this setup a lot better. Not only does it make a cleaner install, but it keeps users out of the installation directories.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Need help resetting permissions

    Hi,
Let me preface this by saying I'm a relative newbie to programming and I've made a rookie mistake. While setting permissions for directories on my web server through Dreamweaver, I accidentally set one to only Users and Everyone and NOT the owner. Obviously, I need access to this directory but can't change the permission now.
Is there anyway to log in as a different user and change this or some other type of fix? Thank you very much for any help you can provide!

I know it sounds like it should work but it doesn't. When I try to change the permission it tells me:
    "Setting access properties failed for:
*the directory I'm trying to change permissions for*
For additional information, check the FTP log."
I check the log and I can't find anything that specifies an error. I'm not sure what to look for but I have access to change everything else BUT that one directory that I accidentally set to CHMOD 77 and not CHMOD 777.
It's hosted by a company in Czech Republic and sadly I don't speak Czech... don't ask. But I guess I'll have to find a way to ask them to reset the permissions on my subdomain- just thought there would be an easy remedy to reset permissions on a directory. I've looked on so many websites and I can't find anyone else with this problem but it seems like an error that could be easily made (just forgot to add a third 7 when I typed in the permissions) and hence would have an easy fix.

I am trying to authorize my computer and I get an error message: The required directory was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed. Help?

I used Terminal to change the permissions on the folder in question.  I followed the instructions in this article:
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization
In my case, the folder was there, so I needed the command to change permissions on the folder, not to create one.   I was hesitant to use Terminal b/c I know that if I made an error I could wipe out my hard drive or render my computer unusable.  So to be SURE I didn't make an error, I carefully copied the command from that page and *pasted* it into Terminal.  Also, before I could do anything in Terminal, I had to go change my admin password (it had been a blank password before and that's not acceptable for making changes in Terminal).  I was just super careful when entering my password or doing anything else while Terminal was open (making sure I didn't accidently hit the spacebar or another key, etc.)  And it fixed the problem right away.
What was confusing for me was that the iTunes error message said to change permissions in the FINDER, which is what I was trying to do.  It didn't mention Terminal.  What would really be helpful is if Apple included a link to a page like this in their error message.

  • Time Capsule backup cannot be seen on new MAC after resetting Time Capsule and changing password.

I have backed up my MAC to Time Capsule with Time Machine, erased HDD and clean installed OX Yosemite. After installation I have to reconfigure Wi Fi, so I reset my Time Capsule changed password. Now I cannot see my previous back up on reinstalled MAC. Neither on TM nor on the Manual search. In finder appeared new disk. I am pretty sure that old files are still there. Can anybody suggest how to retrieve them.

    This sounds like classic Yosemite.
What you did is fine.. there is no way to delete the backups via the reset button.
What I would suggest is a new clean setup of the TC again.. use a full factory reset.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Redo the setup from the airport utility in the Yosemite computer..
Do not use the recommend names.. use really short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TCgenx and TCwifi for basestation and wireless names.
You can also setup wireless password as before but I strongly recommend 8-20 character pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.. no characters outside of that.
Then mount the TC manually in finder.
    Go, Connect to server.
Type in the TC IP address if at all possible.. it is more likely to be reliable than using name.
SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with your IP but it should be static.. that is default)
    Or
SMB://TCgenx.local (use whatever name you have given it.. plus the domain which is always local)
when asked for the disk password supply it and save in the keychain. Then open the disk in finder and you should see your sparsebundle in there.. from migrate assistant you should now be able to see your backup.

Log in to your computer using an administrator account.
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type: "/Users" (without quotes) and click Go.
    If the Shared folder exists
Open Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities).Warning: This step involves modifying permission settings by entering commands in the Terminal application. Users unfamiliar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments should proceed with caution. The entry of incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data. This option requires a non-blank admin password.
Depending on which version of Mac OS X you have, this step will vary:
    On Mac OS X v10.5.8 and earlier, type:sudo chmod -R 777 /Users/Shared
    On Mac OS X v10.6 or later, type:sudo chmod -R 1777 /Users/Shared
    Press Return.
    Quit Terminal.

  • How to view hidden user files and reset permissions

I am having difficulties getting the hidden files to appear first of all. I have tried a couple of different things that have been suggested in other posts. And I would really like a point in the right direction to find information on resetting permissions. Thanks in advance for any help.

To view hidden files, I use a third party program called Desktop Utility, takes only a few seconds to activate and have them shown. Quick and easy.

When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
There is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
