SL hangs during reboot, need to power-cycle

Hi,
I've upgraded my 10.5 machine to 10.6. Now my machine does not reboot anymore. It hangs on a blue screen with the spinning wheel. I have to turn my Mac off to get it back on.
Upgrading to 10.6.1 did not resolve this issue.
Before the upgrade to 10.6 the machine rebooted just fine.
Any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks

If you have anything connected to your USB ports (or firewire ports) you might want to try and disconnect them and try booting again. My problem was a slow shut down with the little cartwheeling going like crazy for a while. You could guarantee that if you had the slow shut down then there was a problem booting the computer. Once I disconnected the two external drives everything works OK.

  • AirPort Express base station needs frequent power-cycling

Hi, I've got an AirPort Express base station, roughly three years old at this point. Every so often I can't connect to the internet --- not wirelessly from my laptop, nor from the desktop that is cabled to the base station. The solution is to power-cycle the base station. Other, less drastic attempts to restore my internet connection never work.
This used to happen just every once in a while, but it's been increasing in frequency --- to the point where it happens almost every day now.
Anyone know what's going on? Time to take it in for service, or maybe time to buy a new one?

Thanks for the clarification. This will make troubleshooting somewhat easier.
Suggest that you pick a time when you can turn the wireless off on the AirPort Extreme for a few days. Keep as many things as possible connected using ethernet cables. If you find that you do not have to restart the AirPort Extreme daily as you do now, that's a pretty strong indication that the problems are being caused by wireless interference of some sort.
Remember that devices connected using ethernet and devices that are connected using wireless are all still on the same network. So, if the wireless is picking up stray interference, it can certainly affect other devices on the network, including loss of your Internet connection.
If you find that you still need to restart the AirPort Extreme with wireless turned off during your "test", then that narrows the possible issues down to several things:
o The modem is experiencing intermittent problems
o The AirPort Extreme is experiencing intermittent problems
Assuming that you know you have good ethernet cables, you can plug a computer directly into the modem for a day or two and keep tabs on things. If you continue to experience a connection loss, the modem is likely acting up.
If you have no problems connecting directly to the modem, then it's time to take the Airport Extreme to an Apple store to let them have a look and perform some diagnostics. If it's an intermittent problem, it will be hard to find, as the product will likely perform perfectly during the tests.

  • Tecra S3 - Windows 2000 hangs during reboot

    Hello all
I a have a Tecra S3 dual booting Windows XP and 2000, with the proper RAID driver installed for each one.
In Windows 2000, it hangs during any reboot. It is necessary to power the computer off and on in order to complete the reboot.
This problem does not happen in Windows XP and DOS. Is there anybody else using Windows 2000 with this model ?
    Thanks,
    Rubens

    Hi
Well, its not easy to say why this issue occurs. I assume that you have installed the W2k from the original Windows CD. In this case its very important that you install the Toshiba driver, tools and utilities in the right order.
On the Toshiba download page I have found a installation instruction for W2k. This list gives you a information about a right driver installation. Please check this document.

  • Must I reboot Windows after power-cycling the PXI?

The fans in the NI PXI-1042 are *noisy*!!! This thing is in a classroom and gets shut off everytime I turn around. Two questions: 1) is there any way to get around the reboot required to find the PXI cards on the PC every time it is power-cycled. 2) Where can I find quieter replacement fans for this thing?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Chris,
I don't know what type of connection you have (MXI-3 or MXI-4)... I have had some success with the following method:
With everything up and running, go to Control Panel >> System >> Device Manager (Hardware Tab). From there, expand the "tree" for System Devices. There you will see 'PCI Standard PCI-to-PCI Bridge'. Right-click on that and choose 'Disable'. The PXI chassis can now be turned off. When you are ready to use the PXI boards again, simply turn the PXI chassis back on, and then choose 'Enable' from device manager and the chassis and computer will link up once again. So, it does require some action up front, but it will save you from rebooting
I can't guarantee this will work every time and I'm not sure if it works for MXI-3 (I have MXI-4) but it may be worth a try.

  • Help needed: Lion Server hangs during reboot (Symbol not found: _kCUIMaskOnlyKey)

    Hi,
I not sure if this is the right forum but hopefully someone might be able to help.
Yesterday I was configuring my local mail system. (Local IMAP server and I checked the access from WLAN and Internet. Everything seems to
work fine until I noticed, that mails from my inbox would disappear automatically after a couple of seconds. I switched all mail clients (iPhone, ...) of,
sent a test mail - but the problem stays. I had no idea what was going on. So I decided to reboot the system. The system came up again and I logged in.
It looked like a fresh desktop was created and Safari wanted to make changes to the system. I decided to roll back the system and reinstalled it from
a backup before I made all the changes. After restoring the system hangs with the gray screen. I tried a reboot in save mode - same result. Then
I rebooted in single user mode. The file system looked OK, but I found many crashes in the system logs. Continuing to multi user mode did not succeed.
I received all the crash logs on the console.
Next I removed the disk and connected it to my laptop. I have extracted the last couple of line from the system log file:

Had the exact same problem yesterday on my mid-2010 Mac Pro with OS X 10.7.3 Server. Formatted my SSD boot drive and restored via time machine and I had the exact same error.
Here is how to solve it. Download from the apple site the OSX10.7.3ServerComboUpdate.dmg. I downloaded using my laptop. Extract the dmg and get the pkg file inside. Put it on a usb drive. Boot your broken OS X system in recovery mode(option key as you boot up, choose Recovery HD). Open the Terminal(don't use the single user mode, the following command did not work from there). If your OS X installation is Macintosh HD type the following(assuimg your USB disk is called USB,otherwise change it):
    # cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD\
    # mkdir update
    # cd update
    # cp /Volumes/USBDrive/*.pkg .
    # installer --verbose -pkg MacOSX10.7.3ServerComboUpdate.pkg -target "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD"/
When it finishes reboot and your OS X will boot normally.
    Hope that helped.

  • 27" imac yosemite update hangs. Required power cycle and safe boot to get the update going. Now all OS X update do the same.

    27" iMac Yosemite update hangs.
The original upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) took almost a full day! The computer hung during one of the reboots and just showed a blank grey screen, no apple logo, no progress bar, nothing. I left it like that for about an hour thinking it might be working in the dark... Eventually I had to power cycle. Disconnected power at the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnected and tried to start. After about 20 minutes, got to the same point, grey screen:no action, again waited at least an hour.
Then I did a safe boot. System came up OK in safe mode to the log in screen. As soon as I logged in, it proceeded with the interrupted update, which ran to completion. Yay!
Now, every update to Yosemite that arrives gives men the same grief!
To add some more, the "Pro Video Formats 2.0.1" update has installed about 4 times, and is asking to be installed again? There's no indication that it fails the update so whats going on?

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed.  Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple.  Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random.  Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow.  Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out.  At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple.  I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so.  Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.

iPhoto just stopped working. It loads pictures, but then goes into rainbow wheel forever. Then I try to force quit it, and then the whole Mac hangs up (had to power cycle it to get it back). I am using OS 10.5.8, and when I run software update, it assures me I have up to date software. I have not added any photos since the last time I used it, probably less than a month ago. What gives?

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • E2500 - Needs to be Power Cycled Once or Twice a Day.

Brand new E2500, needs to be power-cycled once or twice a day. Already reinstalled Cisco Connect and updated the Firmware.
Having some problems with my brand new router and customer service is being of VERY LITTLE help! What should I do?

Let me know the concern that you have, is with the wired connection or with the wireless connection?
You said that you have upgraded the firmware, but after upgrading the firmware you didn’t reset the Router… So reset the Router, power cycle the whole network… Then follow the steps:
If you want to configure the router with the help of the CD so for that you need to uninstall the existing Cisco Connect Software from the computer if there...
Reset the Router and power cycle the network...Make the following connectivity – Connect the Modem with the Router’s Internet port and then connect the Computer with any one of the Ethernet port of the Router [Numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4]... Then install the Cisco Connect Software... It will help you in configuring the Router...
Otherwise you can configure it manually as well…For Let me know the name of the ISP [Internet Service Provider] – means the connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4020&userrole=Linksy...
So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type “IP address of the Default Gateway” that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….

  • Deskjet 3050A J611 needs power-cycle to work wirelessly

Been putting up with this for ages but made a concerted effort to solve it the last day or two, with no success.
The issue is that the printer still appears on the network, ie it shows on the router page, and I can additionally ping it from a PC and get a response,  and it appears as "Idle" in the OS X printing section....but it doesn't respond to either printing or scanning requests. Just seems to get stuck.
If I then power cycle the printer, it works again for a while. Then, I come back a while later, whether it be hours or days, and the thing doesn't work again.
I disabled auto-off, made no difference.
I gave it a static IP via DHCP, made no difference. Logged onto its web page and gave it a static IP that way and that made no difference either.
I thought maybe it's my wireless network (although everything else connected to it works fine), so I even plugged in a spare Apple Airport Express and created it's own hidden wireless network connected to my main network. Again, it worked for a while, but then stopped working when I tried it again this morning. The Airport Express was positioned right next to the printer, so it's not about the signal.
I'm not sure what else I can try. It seems that there is a bug in the firmware or something - I have read a lot of similar reports across the web.
For some reason it enters a state where it appears to be on the network, indeed responds to a ping, but does not work properly.
My OS X is 10.9, but I've also seen the same issue when printing from iOS devices - i.e. when it's in this non-working state, iOS print requests also fail, so I don't think it's driver related.
Can only be the hardware, right?

Just to add a bit more by way of diagnostics.
Just had it happen again and I tried to navigate to the printer's page in my browser and although it accepted the IP address it didn't load a page, just left the screen blank.
I then printed out the Printer Status Report, which shows everything normal, ie the expected IP address, Network Status : Ready, Active Connection Type : Wireless.
Yet neither printing or scanning work, or accessing the printer's web page.
I then went into the HP Utility, via Printers & Scanners in OS Settings, and attempted to print a test page, which I believe bypasses the driver. This caused the connection to the printer to be lost completely. After doing that, pings no longer responded either. Likewise, trying to access the printer's web page subsequently time out.
It was as if printing the test page finally killed it off.
In fact, when i looked at the printer's screen it was just white, and pressing the power button caused it to reboot.
Now it works again, everything is accessible, but I know that next time I come to try and use it the chances are it will have got itself into the bad state again.
While it might not seem a huge inconvenience to have to power cycle the printer in order to be able to use it, it's actually far from ideal because I've got kids who want to be able to print stuff out when they want, and the printer is at the bottom of the house.

  • DHCP not expiring and unit needing power cycling

I've had my AirPort Extreme N gigabit router for about two days now and am having several issues. I upgraded to the 7.2.1 firmware, but that didn't help. I've noticed that DHCP leases, after expiring, aren't releasing and therefor aren't allowing DHCP devices to reconnect. The only work around for this has been to blow out the DHCP lease window exponentially. Secondly, are the activity lights for the lan ports on the back of the Unit supposed to remain on? Mine keep turning off and I have to power cycle the unit to get them to come back on...before they turn off again. I've also had issues where Gigabit Ethernet cards cannot make connections until I reboot the unit. Also, how warm should this device be?

    Thanks for the replies,
I have already tried a full power cycle before posting, should have made that clear in my first post, sorry. Straight after the power cut, I shut everything down for 10 minutes, and then powered all device up one by one.
Also, I just tried changing the beginning address from '192.168' to '10.0' and this made no difference to the issue.
    When trying to get an IP address through DHCP, I receive;
    IP '169.254.117.112'
    subnet mask '255.255.0.0'
    and empty router field
which is extremely strange, as I used to get a subnet mask of '255.255.255.0' and the router's IP has not changed since getting the TC.

  • P67A-GD65 Power Cycle (Rebooting)

    CPU: i7-2600k
    RAM: F3-12800CL6D-4GBXH DDR3-1600 (CL6-8-6-24)
    Motherboard: P67A-GD65
    Motherboard BIOS: 1.8?
    Hello, I have recently purchased a P67A-GD65 from newegg along with a 2600k and G.SKILL DDR3-1600 (F3-12800CL6D-4GBXH)
The problem I am having is that the motherboard will stay on for about 5 seconds then it will reboot, and continue to do so until I turn off the power from the PSU. It will not post so I cannot access the bios or anything.
I have been in contact with msi tech support and they keep telling me to do what I have already done so many times.
I already returned my board for a replacement once but the replacement had the same power cycling issues. I am thinking of buying some cheap 1333 CL9 RAM to see if I can manage to get into the UEFI and see if I can tweak something into making my RAM work
I went on to the G.SKILL forum and found an interesting thread about RAM incompatiblities. Could this be causing the constant reboots?
(Have cleared CMOS many times, tried different PSU, ETC)
    tl;dr
Is my RAM causing the P67A-GD65 to continuously reboot without posting?
Bought some Patriot 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 CL9 RAM from newegg today to see if those will work.
Your help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Alright, the new ram I bought should arrive in a few days (3 or 4).
In the meantime while waiting, try this. With one stick RAM in the primary blue dimm slot, if you get in to the BIOS then, set DRAM Mode to 'Link', timings to 9 9 9 24, tRFC 88, DRAM V. to 1.507 or 1.521. Looking at those timings of the G.Skills in your component list, SPD being set must be rather non standard (just a guess).

  • Bt infinity openreach modem needs power cycling ev...

I have had to power cycle my openreach modem every day for the last two weeks in order to regain connection. I have phoned bt who ran a line test then told me nothing was wrong. Has anybody else had an issue like this or am i going to have to go and buy a vdsl modem myself? Thanks in advance.

Of course they are refusing, you are not using the equipment they supply and are "out of contract".
I would imagine they want you into a new contract for you to be ale to get a "wonderfull" HH5.
The question here is how far do you want to go?
If you are not using ISP supplied equipment (the modem would've been within start of your contract) then you are on your own regarding equipment unless you can prove the fault happens on entry to your propery.
