Slide down/up NavigationBar. Please, help!!!

I have tried posting this question before but couldn't find any answer. I have been trying to solve this issue for past few days but still no luck. I am not asking for any code, just some direction or thoughts.
I am using ToolBarController + NavigationControllers to display views. In one of my view I have a search bar field at the top of the view. I want to slide my navigation bar (from top) only when the user starts to edit the search field. when done editing it slides back up. (similar to search in Maps application)
I know i have to do use animations to do this. But, what i am not able to figure out is how to get hold of the NavigationBar when using NavigationController.

Hi,
The way I did it I don't think it's the best solution but for my application it seems to be enough. I used both IB + code to do this and I didn't use NavigationController for this.
Steps in IB:
1. Create a ViewController. Drag a UIView into it.
2. Now, drag a NavigationBar on to the view.
3. Add NavigationItems to the bar. Set the Custom Left, Right and Title view based on your app requirements.
4. Open the Inspector window and change the dimension properties of your NavigationBar added to the view. Mine looks like (0,0,320,44).
5. Create a IBOutlet in your viewController named myNavBar and connect it to the NavigationBar added.
6. Save everything and move to Xcode.
7. I added a method below and call it with parameters YES/NO whenever I wanted to slide in/out the navigation bar

In my case, I have a searchbar displayed at the top and I slide the nav bar in whenever the editing in the search bar begins and slide it out when editing is over or user presses cancel button
