Slightly OT - Newsletter Vol x No y
Alright, there are things I should know but don't.
For a newsletter, periodical, etc. what is the convention of Volume x No. y ?
Scenerio; local shop closed down, now I'm setting a quarterly piece which previous sample includes VOL. 41 NO. 6
The standard usage being Volume refers to the number of years published; issue being 1 through n of the years total produced.

Email newsletter creation in FW. Not previewing in Mail (mac app).Ipreface
I'm total newb to Fireworks (but have extensive print design experience) so apologies if this is a silly question. I am required to produce an email newsletter and am using the exercise as a way of introducing myself to FW and DW and web design. My idea of the easiest way to do this (for me) was to produce something I could get into Safari and then use it's (nifty) Mail Contents of this Page… command to create the email in Mail Application.
If I import the content to FireWorks, it previews in Safari AoK but when I use Mail Contents of this Page… I get an email message full of image placemarkers with question marks in them (plugin style icons).
I know this feature (Mail Contents of this Page…) works for a lot of content I've tried it with including Dreamweaver content. I've tried a dozen or so work flows including exporting HTML and images from FW and opening that in Safari.
My workflow was InDesign --> export as flattened PDF (with layers) --> open in Photoshop and cut into individual images and Save for Web… --> import images from PS or whole flattened PDF direct to FW --> make slices over images (almost all the text is in spec fonts so is rendered out as images)
Any ideas for a sure-Fire(works) workflow to produce a glossy (X)HTML newsletter?
Any idea why the export from FW looks good in Safari but fails as a Mac Mail HTML message?
For now I'm emailing a link to the online PDF to ship on time but I very much wish to master HTML emails and an efficient workflow.

The HTML export feature of Fireworks is so that you can produce a mockup of a Web design for approvals and such. The HTML is not robust. Couple that with the problem that email clients support a limited set of HTML and CSS and you have a recipe for disaster. When you write HTML newsletters you need to go about them in a slightly different way. But you still need to know your HTML.
HTML newsletters are tricky things. You can't expect a graphics program to produce something that's going to work. You can use Fireworks to design your newsletter. You can slice the design and export the items that will be graphics. But then, you should use Dreamweaver or a plain old text editor to write the HTML and CSS that will work well for email clients.
There are two HTML mailing services that also have lots of info on writing HTML newsletters. Check out the info they have on best practices and the limitations in clients:

Newsletter Compression for Email
I have created a 12 page newsletter with photos and converted it to a pdf using the "Pages" pdf function under Print.
In order to get it to an emailable size, I used the quartz filter in PDFPen.
The large photos in the document are now significantly blurry.
Is there a different process/procedure I could use that wouyld allow me to reduce the file size without losing so much clarity in my photos.
As background: I have inserted all the photos as jpegs. In some cases, I do photo editting in iPhoto and then convert the photos to jpeg and then I look for them in Finder.. I usualy drag the photos directly from "Finder" into the document. I am self-taught through the school of trial and error; I may have missed some big item in "easy production of emailable newsletters"!
Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.A 12 page newsletter with lots of photos will inevitably grow to be at least a few mb, you can only minimise that.
1. Trim the photos outside of Pages to be just what you see cropped in Pages
2. Set the resolution to the absolute minimum 72 dpi or 120 dpi for a slightly better appearance
3. Resave them using jpeg2000 and with as great a lossy compression as you think is acceptable
4. A trick used in web pages is to slightly blur the images before jpeg compression and to selectively blur backgrounds.

It always does that even in lower version of SP but epm add-in works fine after install. You just want to make sure SP18 patch1 is not only epm add-in installed you need to install base SP 18 then install SP18 patch1

We have newsletter server. Sometimes we sent mail by our exchange 2010 server. But recently we are unable to send mail to external mail server. we sent mail by newsletter server within a domain now. We need to solve. Pls. check below log file and provide

Since you are able to send emails to internal domain i assume the application server IP address already allowed into Receive Connector.
To relay application emails to external domain you should enable Externally Secured box in the Authentication Tab of the particular Receive Connector.

I created a newsletter using pages on my IPAD 3. All of a sudden I can no longer open that document. When I click on it, it throws me out of pages all together. I can open other pages documents, but not that one. It is very frustrating to be able to SEE the file, but not open it.
I rebooted and I do have icloud back-up on but am not sure how to restore an older version. I also made sure there are no updates for pages. Until the IPAD I used a home PC which I still have but am trying to wean myself off of. I wish now I had used MS Publisher on my PC for the newsletter even though I hate it.
Please don't tell me I have lost my Newsletter and 20 hours worth of work.Try resetting your iPad. Hold the on/off and home buttons together for 7 or 8 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
I'm assuming your default is to save Pages documents to iCloud, and that you had a good WiFi connection when you closed Pages the last time you tried to save the document. -
I publish a 41mb InDesign newsletter monthly into interactive pdf. It always becomes a file size of 4mb, 10% of original, when I save to pdf. This month my newsletter is 41mb and it drops to 11mb, 25% of original. I have re-sized all pictures, deleted pages separately, have gotten the file size down to 16mb and it drops to 7mb, 45% of original.
I have gone back and saved Feb and March and it saves to 10% of original, as it did before, and I use the same mechanism to save now.
I have gone to Acrobat Pro and optimized down to 8.8mb, but the quality is not acceptable.
What other variable is there that I haven't discovered?My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now. About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

my windows(8.1 64bit) partition is read only from the mac(yosemite) side of things. Anybody have a clue on how to fix this? Also, slightly frustrating as well, windows crashes every time I attempt to open a file from the mac partition.
All Office applications will also try to open a temporary work file in the same location as the source file. This implies the source file directory also needs to be writable for this temporary file. Since the default HFS+ driver provides only read-only access, such temporary files will fail to open, and will cause the application to fail.
As a test copy the file you want to edit, say an Excel spreadsheet from the OSX file system to the C: drive on the Windows side and try to open it. If you look in this directory, you should see two files, the source and a temporary file. You may have to force the temporary file to be opened on a read-write file system, by manipulating the folder for temporary files. -
Problem with iTunes and iTunes Newsletter
The current (12/21/2006) iTunes Classical music newsletter shows the King's Singers Christmas as a Free Download. However, when I click on the link, iTunes does not show anything from this recording as a free download. Not the album. Not even a single track.
What's going on here?Stille Nacht is the free download from the King's Singers Christmas album. Click on the Music link on the main ITMS page, then look down the left side to the bottom for the Free Downloads section. You'll see the link to the free track from the King's Singers there (and of course make sure you're browsing the US iTMS). Or find the album and just look for that track.

Hi, My Mac is around 2 months old, and I have recently come across a slight problem. I've experienced some slight noises happening such as when I open and close the macbook it makes some sort of clicking noises as if to say the panels are loose or have not been screwed properly... It only happens when pressure is applied e.g. when I am typing I tend to rest the palms of my hand on the two plain sections of the mac (next to the track pad) and this causes some sort of pressure to push down to the connecting panel underneath, this is when the clicking sound happens.
I don't know maybe I'm just expecting too much or it might just be what I think it is, anyway if anyone has experience this issue, feel free to share your point of views or past similar experience. Thanks.Yes.. It's been a while, but I remember thinking the same thing!

Newsletter Template / Page set up for print
Hi,
I'm in the process of creating a template for a newsletter, and am not sure how best to start with formating this template so it will be suitable for sending to a printers for a run of about 500 copies each time.
The newsletter will be A4 in size, and will consist of about 12 pages each issue.
Does that mean that I would create an A3 Pages document, and apply 2 pages of the newsletter to this, so it can be folded to create an A4 'book'? Can Pages deal with auto page numbers like this? Or am I pushing it too far?
Or, perhaps, should I just be creating each page on a single A4 page, and the printers will be able to produce the printed newsletter from this?
I know Pages isn't an ellaborate DTP application, but we're using it so it can be easily used by someone in our organisation.
Any advice much appreciated.

cNumber one rule of commercial printing:
Speak to your printer BEFORE you do anything.
Your printer will tell you what their requirements are.
That almost certainly is not a Pages document and usually is not imposed.
Normally these days it is a pdf file in a format acceptable to the Printer, which is not easy with Pages/OSX.
1. Pages/OSX does not produce pdfs conforming with the PDF/X standard required for commercial offset or digital printing
2. Pages does not have bleeds or crop marks. You will have to construct those in oversize sheets (add an extra 10mm all round to do this)
3. Pages does not have slugs to aid the printer in accurately positioning and controlling the printed sheets, you can add your own or find prebuilt pdfs or leave it to the Printer's imposition software to add.
4. Pages/OSX does not use spot colors if you need those, but will let you add pdf elements that contain spot colors. This will produce more than the standard 4 cmyk plates, but not less.
5. Pages/OSX reduce all transparency (other than vector) to an unacceptably low 72dpi when converting to pdf. This affects 3D graphs, shadows, reflections, Alpha Masks and bitmaps marked with less than 100% opacity or overlapping objects which have less than 100% opacity.
6. Pages does not manage either resolution or cmyk well. Although this can be overcome with a great deal of manual work, it is very easy to miss exceptions and make mistakes because Pages does not flag problems nor allow systematic use of named accurate color samples/profiles.
A great many of the problems are due to the way has Pages been written but many others are due to what Apple has done/not done with OSX. There is other low cost software such as Swift Publisher which overcomes most (but not all) of the problems either internally or countering those in OSX.
The usual tools of the trade that do deliver accurate Print ready PDFs are Adobe Indesign and Quark Xpress. Both are expensive and require knowledge and skill to achieve accurate results.
It is normal to vet a pdf file through a program like Acrobat Pro to check for errors so that you can correct them before go to the very expensive press run.
There is only one low cost easy to use software that I currently know of that truly delivers on accurate commercial printing, that is Serif PagePlus X7 and unfortunately that is not available for OSX, but you can use it on a Mac running Windows in emulation.

Unfortunately I have had a good look at what he has written and, whilst he means well, he is that most dangerous, but popular, of advisors, one who knows a little bit more than those who know nothing. He tells the innocent user what they would like to hear, not what they need to know. -
Kernel Panic after slight bump
The Kernel Panic screen (telling me in four different languages to restart my computer) comes up after almost any slight bump. Whether it be simply picking it up or setting it down (I'm not dropping or tossing it) this screen comes up and I don't remember it doing this when it was new.
My iBook G4 is about a year and a half old, all Disk Utility diagnostics come back positive, and I've formatted and re-installed OSX Tiger a couple times but still have had this problem.
After restarting, it does ask if I'd like to report it, but nothing seems to happen when I click the report button (is there somewhere I need to look?).
Any help would be appreciated.Wandering Scrybe:

The newsletter is for nurses. I save "blurbs" from articles w' the link all month long. I then pull up the form for the newsletter and (while on AOL) I used to diminish the form copy the "blurb" and enlarge the form and paste the article. Although this sounds awkward, it was relatively easy and quick. I then posted the completed Newsletter form on our website.
However, since I acquired DSL and using Firefox.....I am in a quandary. I can not do as I have previously done. I am forced to make a draft of the Newsletter, copy the ''blurb'' , pull up the draft and paste , then save the draft. Very very awkward and and can become confusing if interruptions take place. Then, send a notice BCC to segments of 10 members or more (there are about 800 members) that the newsletter is posted. What an ordeal. I finally figured out to make the roster a 2nd draft and the form letter a 1st draft. Saving each over and over. Exhausting. The Notice is monthly....The diagram was supposed to look more like this......

How to Print 4-Pg Newsletter on 11x17 using EPSON WF7510
I am having difficulty printing a 4 page newsletter in .pdf format on the Epson Work Force 7510 printer. You would think it would be simple to print four 8.5x11 sheets 2-up on 2-sided 11x17 paper, but I am finding it impossible. I spend 2 hours on the phone with EPSON only for them to tell me it's the application's problem not theirs. So here I am....
Currently, i am able to print 2-up, 2-sided on 11x17, but the 8.5x11 pages shrink to 6.5x9 with margins on the outside rim of the 11x17, no margin between the 2 pages. I do not want the 8.5x11 to shrink, i want the documents to print actual size. My only solution now is to feed the same 11x17 sheet 4 times printing each page one-at-a-time, hoping I don't mess up on the orientation of the paper. "Cut me Mick!".

I clicked on Page Setup... and selected 11x17 Paper Size and Source of Paper Cassette and voila, the white margins disappeared and my 8.5x11 sheets were full size! -
my iPhone 4 is running ios 7.0.4. I have a slightly eccentric back story to all of this; but basically i set a secondary entry passcode on my phone and i have forgotten the secondary passcode; it appears as though i no longer have the opportunity to enter the code after too many failed attempts -- "iphone is disabled, connect to itunes." i have connected to itunes on itunes on both 11.1 and 11.3 versions (my computer says 11.1 is the minimum requirement for my phone to sync) and attempted to restore my phone; THE RESULTING MESSAGE: "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." HOW THE HECK DO I GAIN ENTRY TO MY PHONE AGAIN AND GET SOME USE OUT OF IT. IT DID COST $$$ TO BUY. PLZ HELP!

It sounds like you are unable to connect to your home Wi-Fi suddenly on 2 different iOS devices. I would be interested to know if the affected phones are able to connect to a different Wi-Fi connection, but barring that I would use the following article to help troubleshoot the devices and the Wi-Fi connection:
