Slow AFP login

This started as a Lion Server issue but the problem is still present after upgrading to Mountain Lion yesterday. Logins to sharepoints via AFP take about ~30 seconds for authentication. That's 30 secodns after submitting username/password credentials before being presented with a list of sharepoints to choose from. It's the same delay whether selecting the sever from the sidebar or using a URL/IP address in connect to server. Strangly though, this delay only exists for the connections to the server on the LAN. Connections via "VPNing" into the network and then using connect to server with the same IP address do not get any delay at all. Same when enabling a port forward for AFP connections. Only connections from clients on the same subnet as the server are affected. The issue only affects OD accounts. Local accounts on the server always login at normal speeds.
There are multiple external services that authenticate users from this OD server including a Kerio Connect mail server and a wordpress installation to name a few. All do so without any errors or slow downs.
There are no errors in any od/password server/kerberos log I can find to explain the slow down. Using a Bonjour browser confirms on the correct IPv4/6 addresses are being advertised for the AFP service.
Configuration:
ML 10.8.3
OD Master with one remote replica (also experiencing same symptom of fast via VPN and slow on LAN)
Static IP, correct forward and reverse DNS setup (changeip -checkhostname reports success)
DNS is external, not on same server
Only file sharing, caching, time machine and OD are running on the server
Troubleshooting so far:
This server started life as a Lion server and everything was great. Then there was an ISP change. Once the new internet connection was live the server had lots of problems authenticating users for a couple of hours. Then the problems went away by themselves while we were still troubleshooting. Nothing had changed, just suddenly everything was authenticating successfully. But AFP authentication was slow with this 30 second delay.
The server has been archived, demoted to standalone, promoted back to a master and restored. The issue is unchanged. The archive has been restored to another server setup with the same configuration (hostname, network settings, etc) in a test environment and the issue is not present so it's not something contained within the archive.
A strange thing happened after the restore however. A few hours after the restore, the server app would only see local users and groups. Workgroup manager could see the directory users but would not accept the directory admin credentials even though the same password worked on the replica. Using command line tools to reset that password to it's correct value didn't work either. So the server was upgraded to Mountain Lion. After the upgrade the new server app could see all the directory accounts and the admin account password was being accepted by the 10.8 version of workgroup manager.
I'm at a complete loss to understand why the authentication process would have this delay for clients on the LAN vs clients connecting via a VPN connection or port forwarding from the internet. Anyone ever seen anything like this or have any tips on which logs to look at to get further information?

It didn't solve the problem but it did make me think about looking more closely at the clients. I hadn't done that because the issue is affecting all of them equally including my machine which works fine connecting to other servers.
I found some useful entries in the system.log file when one of the client machines was trying trying to authenticate to the server.

This all seems to suggest to me that the computer checks for a kdc realm on the machine that is maintained by Apple. Then it tries OFFICE.EXAMPLE.COM then TPGI.COM.AU. TPG is the ISP at this site and reverse dns lookups of the WAN IP address have tpgi.com.au at the end of them so it looks like the final fall back is that kerberos on the computer is doing a reverse dns of the wan ip and doing a hail mary looking for a kdc.
What's interesting is the one in the middle. The actual realm name is SERVER.OFFICE.EXAMPLE.COM and the server's address is server.office.example.com. The only place that OFFICE.EXAMPLE.COM exists on it's own is in the external DNS (it's an A record for the WAN IP address to allow simple remote connections) and as the search domain in the network DHCP configuration (option 15 to be specific).
Anyone know the process of how a Mountain Lion client identifies realms to look for during afp authentication?

  • Apex is too slow to login and run report

    Hello Expert,
I am working to fix a problem with APEX is extremely slow to login. It might take 3 to 5 min for the login to show up and it takes forever to load the reports on the screeen that has 1000's of rows. And when it comes to clik on the button to move from tabs in the application, or select a drop down menu, it takes forever.
can any one suggest a solution to this problem? Is anyone experience this at their work environment and what can I do? If I am working on the same application in Development Environment, it is a little bit faster, it dosn't take that long as it takes in production.
Your suggestions is much needed and appreciated.

Without knowing what version of the database & APEX it is kinda hard to even fathom where your issue is...
Are you having issues just getting a user logged in or is it a combination of logging in then running the report?
Have you tried running the query OUTSIDE APEX in TOAD or SQL Developer?
Can you post some information on what the query looks like?  Maybe even post a sample of the code on the Hosted Oracle Instance?

  • Slow Guest Login

I just posted another thread about slow PHD login issues, but this is separate (I think). I have modified the guest accounts on our work computers to include some customizations such as a set of calendar subscriptions, a reduced set on the Dock, and some custom Safari preferences like home page and bookmarks. When I try to log in as a guest, there is a pause at the login screen for somewhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. The guest icon looks like it has been pressed, but the screen is unresponsive and does not yet show the login process. Eventually, it successfully logs in.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up? People often think that it isn't working, and try clicking Guest over and over again. And even if you do understand that it is slow, it seems ridiculous that one should have to wait for minutes on end just to log in.
It looks like the total size of the /System/Library/User Template folder is about 280MB - 125MB of ~Library/Application Support, 50B of ~Library/Calendars, and around 80MB of ~/Library/Fonts. Is this what's causing the slowdown? I imagine that I could move some of the fonts (probably from Microsoft Office) to /Library/Fonts, but I don't know how much I could reduce the sizes of the others.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Greg

It looks like the total size of the /System/Library/User Template folder is about 280MB - 125MB of ~Library/Application Support, 50B of ~Library/Calendars, and around 80MB of ~/Library/Fonts. Is this what's causing the slowdown?
Your customized User Template folder is definitely part of the problem, if not all of the problem. The normal size of that is 6.7 MB. Every time one logs into the guest account, the entire contents of User Template is being copied to ~guest. That can take quite a while if you have grown it to 280MB.
Hacking the System Folder is not a good way to customize the guest account. Set the User Template back to the OS X default. Move the fonts and app support files into /Library/Fonts and /Library/Application Support, where they will be accessible to all users. Use Workgroup Manager (part of the Leopard Server Admin Tools free download) to customize the Dock.

  • AFP Login slow from only one workstation

Have one OS-X 10.6.4 server and multiple 10.6.4 client machines on 192.168.xxx.xxx network. Logging in to the server via the Finder side-bar is quick from all machines except one. For that machine it can take 2 minutes but is ultimately successful. Since all logins are quick from other workstations it points to problem with this one workstation. Tried changing connection from ethernet to airport with same slowdown. Tried building a new workstation account and logging from that one, same results. It may be relevant that this server had an IP address change and the problem workstation was the only one that logged into it at the old IP address. Suggestions?

I am experiencing the same problem.
My server - 10.6.4 server on a mac mini - also had an IP and DNS change. The problem client has the domain name previously assigned to the server. I do not know if this is a cause. I have scoured the server for any remaining references to the old domain name but there appear to be none. Unlike your case, the problem client is not the only machine to have connected with the server under it's old name/ip (in fact it may never have done so), but no other clients are experiencing the problem.
The slow connect also manifests itself every time you attempt to relist the server shares in the 'shared' section of a finder window sidebar, even if one of the shares is connected. Listing the connected share via the 'devices' section of the sidebar is, however, immediate.
Any ideas where to look in the client logs for troubleshooting clues?

  • Tiger 10.4.4 Slow Afp access when AppleFileServer app takes up 100% CPU

I'm hoping maybe someone here will have a clue on this because so far everyone else I've talked to doesnt!
    G4 Xserve Specs:
    G4 1Ghz Proc
    1.5 Gig Ram
    x2 60Gig drives (Software Stripe)
LAN: 1Gig Asante 1000SX Fiber Card (w/ tiger drivers from Manufacturer)
Previously running 10.3.9 then upgraded to 10.4.4
Supports: Mac Manger (90 clients doing MMLocalPrefs)
Reading Counts (about 60 concurrent clients)
General Shares (130-160 clients) basically just mounts were people backup their local documents.
Any given time about 250 users connected
    Users all in NetInfo
    Problem:
Over Christmas break we upgraded our existing Xserve G4 Slot loader server from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. When we returned from the break and all the teachers were back on we noticed that AFP file transfers were very slow. Mac Manger login, Reading Counts, Grade Quick, and even general shares were not responding as quickly as they did prior to the upgrade. The day after everyone returned the 10.4.4 update became available. We upgraded and still had the same problem. I called Apple support who ran me through plugging a machine directly into the server and more or less that was very fast. They blamed our switch gear and that was more or less the end of the conversation.
Through the next 3 weeks I probed our switch guy for a resolution. He made modifications which seemed to get us a little fast, but still not back to where we were. So at the end of the 3rd week we paid a consulting company to come in and turn the new G5 server we recently purchased into the new main server. 10.3.9 Was installed then upgraded to 10.4.4. After all patches were applied we migrated the Netinfo users into Open Directory, moved over their home directories, Reading Counts databases, and Grade Quick databases. Also all Mac Manger stuff was recreated from scratch. Here is what I ended up with:
    G5 Xserve Specs:
    G5 2Ghz Proc
    3 Gig Ram
x1 80 Gig drive (for System)
x2 400 Gig drives (Software Stripe for storage)
LAN: 1 Gig onboard NIC Copper
10.3.9 Installed for MM usage then upped to 10.4.4
Supports: Mac Manger (90 clients doing MMLocal Prefs)
Reading Counts (about 60 concurrent clients)
    General Shares (130-160 clients)
    Users all in Open Directory
The next morning when all the users came in things were better. Processor was no longer going to 100% early in the morning and staying there all day like it previously had. However it would do so on occasion still. Often staying at 100% for 30 mins and then dropping for no reason. When we continued to have the problem I decided to drop some clients. We previously had all student machines in one of our Elementary buildings doing MM logins as well. It was felt that these student (1 acct for each grade level) accounts could have corrupt files (which Disk Utility doesn’t pick up) because we were allowing them Multiple Logins with the same account. MM was disabled on all these machines and so were the accounts. This dropped us down to approx. 50-60 MM clients and again we seen an improvement. CPU was still sticking but not nearly as long.
So that more or less brings us up to current. Here are things I’ve tried which don’t really fit too well into the above timeline, but were all done after the new server came online:
    - Went to all MM machines and deleted all the prefs from them. Also deleted the Classic folder out of all users’ profiles forcing new prefs to be created.
    - We had Mac Manger set to copy all prefs to the machines. Changed it to just internet and Admin prefs.
    - Have tested with different buildings disabled to see if one building was more so an issue then another.
As it stands now when my CPU hits 100% the AppleFileServer app according to Top and activity monitor is using all of it. The hard drives are not blinking and the network graph is only showing approx. 400Kbs of traffic average. All I’m hearing from Apple is that I’m serving too many people which if my HDs were blinking like crazy and the server was putting out some decent network through put I would understand. Others have told me its all Mac Manger’s fault. Again though prior to the upgrade I never had any problem with this stuff! Even when I had high CPU usage in 10.3.9 it was barely noticeable by my network users both MM and regular shares.
    Any one have any ideas?

Xserve G4 and Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Lots of Imacs, G4s, Ibooks, and now some Mac Mini's and G5s

    Hi folks.
I've upgraded my servers to OS X 10.4.5 server...
We're still experiencing slowness with clients (about 35), with network home folders. Especially noticable when more users are on-board.
But even with just a few users logged in. And logging in seems to take longer (30 secs, instead of say, 10 secs).
And file transfers are painfully slow.
Logging in as a "local" admin user on the machine works great -- file transfers are faster too.
Previously, we had a whole boat-load of other services on this particular server box. I've been progressively moving them off to other/new boxes... Aiming for the "one server - one service" principle.
We also have a file-sharing volume, and Mail on the same box as the LDAP authentication/home folders, so I'm migrating these services to new boxes too (easier said than done in a production environment!).
I usually run this command in a terminal window on a given machine or server, to see what's running at the time...
    run top -us 10 5
Check how many page in-outs you have as well (listed in the info at the top of the 'top' command when it's being run).
    Other changes...
I've recently put in 10/100/1000 HP switches to see if that helped (was 10/100 hubs and switches); that helped a lot, but the problems are still bad. I also upgraded my OS X Server boxes to 5GB of RAM.
We're not a design studio... We're just an office with a "standard" load of documents being opened, editted and saved. Occasional PDFs, that type of thing. But mostly Word docs, web browsing and Mail.
Hopefully migrating the large shared folder and Mail services will help too.
I suspect any directories with a large number of files will be contributing (500+ files in a directory). But I don't have many/any like this.
Add to that, using apps like Office/Word or Quark across a network, and that will definitely contribute.... Hence my reasoning to separate the stand-alone file-share to a different server box.
I've also got client machines to only check mail every 15 minutes (especially until I get migrate them to another box).
I'm also getting my network cabling checked out, just in case ... it is a few years old after all !!! I've replaced suspect patch leads with new CAT5 or CAT6 leads, and destroyed the old ones.
Also, try checking through all your Log files on both the server, and a 'typical' client machine or two. I've noticed some 'interesting' entries in the Directory Services client log file, for example, talking about "Network transition occurred" and so on.
My HP managed switches also report some CRC errors, and the occasional duplex-mismatch error... and a few traffic "errors", which I didn't know about until the managed switches were installed. (Might be solved by setting the speed/duplex of the port / Mac manually, or could be cabling issue).
My client machines are all iMac G4's and iMac G5's. Oh, and occasional recent Powerbook G4's, with gigabit networking.
Let us know if anyone has a break-through!
    Cheers,
    Derek!

  • Windows 8.1 machine is slow to login on network because of a public folder that it is scanning

I have a problem with windows 8.1 machines taking a long time to login to the network.  They are on a Domain and there are mapped drives involved.  I have turned off the mapping of the drives one at a time and have found that the problem is the
public folder that has thousands of pictures and audio files on it.  If I don't map the public drive the system logs on very fast if I map the public drive the windows machines will take 45 seconds at 800 mbs pull on the ethernet card to scan then the
system works like normal.  If you try to login through the wireless system forget it.  I have turned off every indexing searching program I can find and cannot get it to stop.  None of the windows 7 machines have this problem so it is something
in the new OS that is causing it.  Please advise???

Trick will be to find the source of the indexing. Even if Search is shown as indexing the content it may be transitive because some apps is calling say WMI to trigger say Windows Search to perform the index.
Stopping services like Windows Search will generally have some negative side-effect that you won't want to live with.
What is the link speed and latency like between the 8.1 client and the public drive?
Are you able to open a support case?
    Suggestions:
Verify that the 8.1 install is fully patched (i.e. has all monthly updates installed starting from the ZDP to February 2014 updates.
    Collect a WPA trace
The best tool is the Microsoft SBSL SDP available from Microsoft, else using the slow logon syntax in
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/10128.tools-for-troubleshooting-slow-boots-and-slow-logons-sbsl.aspx
Collect a concurrent NETSH trace during the the XPERF / WPA trace
<do this by running the following command from an Admin-privileged CMD prompt at the point in the SBSL SDP workflow where you chose between slow boot and slow logon>
    netsh trace start Scenario=NetConnection capture=yes tracefile=c:\nettrace-logon.etl
    logoff and logon
    netsh trace stop
Share your data, preferably in the contest of a Microsoft support case.

    netsh trace start Scenario=NetConnection capture=yes tracefile=c:\nettrace-logon.etl

    netsh trace stop
Disabling search indexers may be a workaround but typically has some kind of work around that will hurt you long term.

  • AFP login via Kerberos from 10.5 clients to 10.4 server broken

I don't know if this is connected to the problem laid out by William W. Higgins in [Open Directory or LDAP Problem with 10.5 Client and 10.4 Server|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2163645&tstart=0]. The symptoms are... somewhat different, so I'll start a new thread.
We've got a small office with a bunch of 10.5.8 clients, a couple of 10.6 clients, one lone Windows 2000 client, and a number of remote users. I've had my OS X Server 10.4.11 machine (a PowerMac G5 single 1.8GHz, fwiw) working happily as an OD Master for the past few weeks. It's mostly a file server and a back DNS server for our public web site—we have web service turned on, but it's mostly to allow remote users to download files (or upload via WebDAV). The server has a secondary NIC that's hooked up to the cable modem in the DMZ. Everything else is behind the modem's NAT.
We've had some things show up on the logs that are making us want to tighten security, both in the LAN and over the internet. We've gone to HTTPS for the web server and are using TLS/SSL for the PureFTPd server. We closed the SMB ports on the external firewall—something we should have done years ago, probably.
I wanted to switch the AFP service over to Kerberos authentication only. However, when I make that change in Admin Server>AFP>Settings>Access, none of the clients can log on; they get an error reading:
    +*Connection Failed*+
+There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.+
+If you are unable to resolve the problem, contact your network administrator.+
Then, after you click on OK, you get the following:
+Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unknown error occurred.+
    +(Error code -5002)+
That code seems to indicate a Kerberos problem.
And when I try to log on as a network user from one of the clients, I get this message:
*+You are unable to log in to the user account "user" at this time+*
+Logging in failed because an error occurred.+
    Gee, that's helpful!
Server Admin shows OD and Kerberos as up and running. The Password Service log has the following entry:
    +Jan 21 2010 09:18:21 AUTH2: {0x4b4df87638fa1ec80000003400000034, bound-client-machine$} CRAM-MD5 authentication succeeded.+
So the log-on didn't go through Kerberos, for some reason, though it's been working fine that way for weeks.
I tried using +sso_util configure -r KERBEROS.REALM -a diradmin afp+ to make sure that single sign-on was running for AFP. No change.
I can use +dscl -u username -p localhost read /LDAPv3/Users/username+ and read the information on the user's home directory.
I can use /System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos (or Ticket Agent) to request and receive a ticket. (Side note: does Kerberos really not allow login by secondary short names??? That's a pain! If I add principals for the secondary short names, will it authenticate correctly to the proper account???)
FTP is working. Web authentication is working. If I turn Kerberos authentication off for AFP, everything else seems to return to normal... but then the passwords are passed as cleartext, which isn't acceptable.
So... Is this a bug? Is this a conflict with PureFTPd? Am I doing something wrong?

    Post-reboot:
Well, the good news is that the kdc now shows up in the kadmin log as starting up:
Jan 26 11:43:02 localhost kadmind[98](info): Seeding random number generator
Jan 26 11:43:03 localhost kadmind[98](info): No dictionary file specified, continuing without one.
    Jan 26 11:43:04 localhost kadmind[98](info): starting
The lack of dictionary file I believe is a minor error, right?
The bad news is that a) clients are no longer able to receive tickets (+*Kerberos Error* Configuration does not specify default realm+) and b) clients can't log on at all—not even via the Finder>Go>Connect to Server... command. Not even when you use the static IP address of the server rather than the DNS name.
DNS still seems to be working. I can get reverse lookup:

(The DNS also checks out from the clients.)
    But.... fubar.
When I run +kadmin.local listprincs+, it lists all of the users and computers I've added—plus a couple that I don't recognize but that seem to be the products of bound computers (the names are along these lines, rather than the actual computer names for the clients: +LKDC:SHA1.59B886209B027XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX$@CERBERUS.LIMBO.JCF.ORG+). But when I run +kadmin.local list_policies *+, it just pops down to the next prompt. There don't seem to be any policies defined. That can't be right, can it????
Further weirdness: I tried rebinding the client that I'm working from (an iMac running 10.6.2), also using the IP address. It goes through the binding process, but no dice—when I try to run System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos.app, I still can't get a ticket. And the weird bit is, there doesn't seem to be a /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos plist file on the client. Well, no wonder the client's Kerberos app can't authenticate the realm—there's no local file in which the data is stored!
I should note that when I rebooted this morning, I first booted to the backup drive and ran Disk Utility; I repaired permissions—more than once—and repaired the disk directory as well. Perhaps I have confused the **** out of it. Though how the permissions got fouled in the first place is beyond me.
I have other things to do (as it says in my profile, I'm the local IT guy by default)—though everyone where I work needs this problem solved.
At this point my options seem to be:
1.) Back up, demote, promote and reload the OD server.
    2) Reinstall from scratch.
If anyone has any suggestions in the next hour or so, I'd love to hear them!

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) freezes or is slow to login

Hi, so this issue has occured for a while, but my Macbook Pro 13-inch Mid-2012 freezes occasionally on my login screen. A couple of things happen when it does this.
Either it freezes and there is no blinking cursor in the password box and I can't move the trackpad/if I do move the trackpad it just turns into a spinning beach ball for 20 seconds and then it finally allows me to log in. When I log in, for a few minutes everything on my computer is sluggish, for example going to my launchpad takes time and opening up applications takes time.
Or, it will do all of what I just stated above but it is preceded by a sound as if it were booting up from shut down (that mechanical disk sound that always happens right when you press the power button to boot up the computer) and then following this, the screen is brightened a lot and there is a white loading bar at the bottom of the screen towards the middle. The loading bar is like 15 or so transluscent white horizontal lines that become solid white to indicate loading. This may take a few seconds and then it does exactly what I stated in the previous paragraph.
This issue has happened for a while, and I'm not sure what the problem is. Please help! It's frustrationg to have to take 30 or more seconds to wake up my computer and begin using it.
I am running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on a Macbook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012) with 4 GB of RAM and 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor.

When I log in, for a few minutes everything on my computer is sluggish, for example going to my launchpad takes time and opening up applications takes time.

Check your System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items.  Get rid of and/or delete all that you do not need or want.

If you found no solutions to your problem(s) listed in the various Knowledge Base Articles see if the following suggestions are of any help:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices/peripherals from your computer.
Step 1:  Restart into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key during startup.  The comp will run a complete & lengthy file system check, then start up w/only the required kernel extensions & w/o running any Startup items that you installed.
If you are running OS 10.4 it will also perform some font finagling.
Try starting up normally again.  If you are still stalling, restart in Safe Mode & move on to Step 2...........
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Step 2:  Open Library>Startup items folder-the *root* level Library, not the one in your user name folder.
Look for potentially problematic 3rd party items such as virus scanning software components, etc.  Remove 1 or more items to a location outside the Library folder, such as the Desktop, then restart normally & see if your Mac stalls.  It it does, try removing all the items in the Startup items folder & restart.  If all’s now well, place the items back into the Startup items folder 1 by 1, restarting each time you put one back.  If and/or when the stall resurfaces, you just identified the faulty component.
If the above does not work, then it’s time to move on to Step 3.................
Step 3:  WARNING-This step can be tedious-removing .plist files from the /Library/Preferences folder.
Remove the entire Preferences folder from the Library folder on your startup drive then place the files back 1 by 1 until you see the problem return. *The Mac will automatically create a new Preferences folder in the Library folder*
Alternatively, you can take half of the items out (all non-Apple .plist file, for example), restart to see if your Mac stalls, then move to a smaller set of  items, repeating the process until the culprit is found.
Or you can use Preferential Treatment which is a *FREE* utility that does all the work for you.
Hang in there & good luck!!!!

  • Win 7 slow boot - login in with fingerprint reader

    Hi
I have a T400s (2.4 GHz and 4 GB) with an Intel SSD and WIn 7 RTM with latest Lenovo beta drivers.
I have the fingerprint reader activated for login and my boot time of 35 seconds is now split about half in the fingerprint login and half in the rest of the boot process.
Or described in another way if the machine is powered off and I swipe my finger to start the machine it takes about 17 seconds before the login prompt (the finger) is shown.
Then the machine shows "waiting" for 15-20 second during which my personal login icon flashes by before it completes the login and almost immediately shows the desktop.
I am surprised by the very slow login with my finger already swiped. It would be much faster to disable the fingerprint reader and log in using a password. Anyone encountered this problem and knows how to fix it?
Other problems with the boot I have found (and solved) is the use of a solid color as the Windows background which for some reason costs about 15 second in boot time!!? I also had to reflash the firmware of my SSD to gain an additional 10 seconds at the start of the boot process.

    Hi Mats,
I have a similar, if not, the same complaint. I have a T500 running Win 7, which was just upgraded from NT.
My complaint - and it goes under the topic of usabiltiy - is that it takes anywhere from a couple of seconds up to 20 seconds before a valid fingerprint scan is accepted. If it's a scan doesn't match, there's immediate feedback of an error. I wouldn't mind the delay so much if the was some immediate feedback. If I click the "other credentials" button, I can see that the machine is "validating".  If I enter my password, boom, I'm immediately logged in.
This is annoying.  Under NT, there was not such problem.  Your post is from 1 1/2 years ago. It's surprising that no one else is complaining about this. I guess most just say "forget it - I'm just using my password." But I know the process works and works nicely.  (I've run the ThinkVantage System Update as recently as Feb '11. So, the drivers are current.)
    Hey, anyone from Lenovo listening?!!

  • Slow AFP after Security Update

    Hi!
We're a small company running an OS X Server for file sharing. Yesterday I installed the Security Update 2009-004 (Universal), which fixes some AFP, DNS stuff that is way above me.
After reboot the AFP service wasn't running, so I started it. But now clients connecting goes really slow. A matter of waiting many minutes, not seconds. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this issue? Done some googeling, but no one else seems to have the same issue.
Any hints, tips and links would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

i saw the same issue on a client's old g4 xserve running 10.4.11 server. afp connections can take minutes to complete sometimes.
i think it has something to do with dns and kerberos changes introduced with the 2009-004 security update but haven't been able to determine a resolution just yet.

  • Slow network login with DSC

    Hi,
I am trying to implement a login feature to our program which will allow different users to have different rights to front panel controls. There is a server in our subnet to which I am trying to login. I have configured the necessary users and groups in the domain account manager in the server. I have also granted access to all machines in the subnet (from the account control tab via properties). The problem is that while the login works (and all the machines in the subnet can see the login server), it is painfully slow. It tooks a little over 5 seconds to login a user via the server. I have tried using the "programmatic login.vi" and the built-in "invoke login dialog.vi". In either case, the login is slow. What is happening in the server (or the "programmatic login.vi") in the login process so that it is so slow?
This is obviously a network problem because I have tested with local domains. A login to a local domain happens fast. When I enter an incorrect password to a network domain, the login prompt quickly tells me that, and there is no delay. However, with a successful login, the login is slow. What could be the cause to this problem?
    I am using LabVIEW 8.6.1.
    Best regards,
    Jarmo

I am 99% sure someone else had 'slow transfer' in another thread.
Sometimes a router needs firmware update to be compatible, or upgrade the cables to cat6e, or look for a new router or switch which helped my own setup. Just look for one that says that it is "Vista compatible" actually.

  • Slow portal login on Dialog instances

    Hello.
We are having issues with our portals in the sense that it is taking users up to two minutes to login to our portal system. The long login times seem to only happen on our "dialog servers", and the central instance logs in fine and fast.
Furthermore, after the users login to the system (either DI or CI), the system runs fast, and performs well,,, it is just the login that is taking a considerable amount of time.
    1. The only the portal dialog instances (app servs) are slow.. the central instance is fast when loggin in.
    2. This seems to only affect users logging in from the active directory. Users such as "administrator" login fast.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Praveen

Hi Praveen, facing the same situation. I´ve noticed that if the user is involved in any role with R/3 ivies , such as ESS, MSS or PS/PLM roles, the performance is really poor as you say and the behaviour is exactly the one you have described.
Now I´m looking for some strange and hide parameter used in the system definition of my R3 systems inside the portal.... it seems that the portal is checking one by one all the iviews with an external R3 connection before it open....
Please, if you find the solution, help me!!

  • How to avoid system slow when login first time  everyday

if login system first time every day, it will be very slow for loading web application.
I think maybe it 's  reload cache every night or by a certain perods of time.
how to avoid this situation. or set cache reload a time per week?

    Terry,
I would confirm your application pools are set up as suggested in the install documentation.  This should resolve your issue.

  • Help troubleshooting slow user login

for the past week i've been having a problem with slower then normal login to my user account. (the top menu bar loads in slices very slowly)
login in safe mode and to another user account is much faster so i can narrow it to something in my start-up items/extensions.
what's the best way to figure out the problem: should i be disabling the login items in my user account control panel or should i be looking for something in the user/library folder?
btw, i repaired disk permission and deleted cache files using first macjanitor (which seemed to hang so i force quit) but then i followed up with onyx.

    Jimyyz,
Most times that I've seen this, the problem was caused by a bad cache file in the main Library folder. Look in /Library/Caches for all cache files associated with this account (most of these will have the account's UID appended to the name: "501," 502," "503," etc.). If you don't know the account's UID, check that user's "properties" in Netinfo Manager.
    Good luck!
    Scott
