Slow boot with SSD

I have a Corsair Force 180g SSD (SATA3) in a MBP15, with the 2.2 i7 and 8g ram.  Boot time seems long for a SSD.  From button-on to Apple logo takes 35 seconds.  After the logo, its less than 15 seconds to my desktop, which includes an enforced logon process.  I'm ok with the <15 sec, and apps really run fast now, but the slow POST is concerning me.  I can't find anything on a fast boot setting, etc... I understand the MBP uses SATA2.. is it possible I have a SATA3 - SATA2 issue that's slowing down the POST?

My SysPref refers to a Start-up disk only; I assume the Volume is assumed.  Only this SSD list listed and selected.  Below is the list of properties.  Is the Disk ID and maybe even the name an issue?  Should it be disk0s1?  the drive was built while attached to another machine.. its  a long story as to why I had to do that...  Is it possible the system is looking for the first drive and eventually falling back to this drive?  I would think the being the target boot disk in SysPref would deal with this....

    Hi RobertRak
I can only say I have a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB installed in my MacBook Pro 17”. Speeds are exquisite: Write: 479.1MB/s Read: 508.9MB/s
Like Melophage, I left the Optical drive in place.
My only thought for your case is to check firmware of the Samsung SSD drive.
    Samsung SSD website: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html
I think i used DiskUtility to clone the ISO to USB flashdrive or CD-RW. It was a challenge to get the Mac to boot from their DOS, but once successful you should get to the latest firmware. The Samsung needs to be in the internal SATA connection.
Be aware that the POST check your Mac does on startup will always take time. Depends on amount of RAM, how long your other internal spindle drive takes to get to speed and unpark the heads etc.
Can't say i've counted the boot time on mine. I know it's quicker now since putting the SSD in.
You will need at least 10% free space left on the boot SSD too BTW.
    Hope this assists.

  • Slow Boot with errors in kernal file - Can someone help tell me what these are?

I've been getting increasingly frustrated with the startup time on my MBP. I have copied the startup log from the kernal and highligted the few things that I am questioning why they are getting errors and hanging.. Some of these may be normal but some dont seem like it...
Im looking to see if someone can look at this log and let me know what these few things are? And maybe how to fix them?
Ideally I would love for someone to just look at it and be like "Oh, thats your problem..." I'm just not familiar enough to be able to do that....
Also, I am new to the "Apple Community" so I'm not sure the best way to deliver the information that I have, such as the log text and system specs that may be useful.. So if I just need to post the log that I copied in here, let me know..
    Thanks.

Here is a copy of the log file... The things in red are what make me (a person who knows nothing) curios...  Some are warnings and errors, and some I highligted just because of the time they slow things down.. Im just curious what they are and can/should they be fixed somehow?
    Thanks!

  • Slow booting with OS 10.6.2

My mac takes five or six minutes to boot--first with a gray screen that takes a long time to go through the progress bar, then a blue screen, and finally the finder. It is very frustrating. I have a 2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

    HI,
Please click My Settings and update your forum profile to reflect the MBPro. Thanks!
    Boot in Safe Mode
    See if makes a difference...
What this process does... It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/
Restart your Mac and see if login time is reduced.
If not and you can boot to the Finder, open System Preferences/Accounts - Login Items. Remove any apps listed there.
Go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any items in that folder to the Trash.

  • Slow boot with USB 3

Ok so i have had an iMac late 2012 and since it came out i have had an issue with all USB 3 extension hubs.
When i boot my mac it takes around 4-6 seconds however whenever the hub is plugged in and i turn on my iMac it boots in just over 1 minute.
it is fully functional once it is turned on and i get pretty good speeds too.
i was hoping it would be fixed with a software update.
firstly does anyone have the same issue?
has anyone managed to fix it?
I need help because this is really annoying now

I had initially thought that too, and that teh wifi chip may run off of an internal usb, however i have since disabled it and moved to ethernet.
    So still not resolved

  • Slow boot with usb connected on minimac 2006

My Mini Mac (early 2006) was working ok till 2 days ago when the boot times went into the 4 minute range with the USB CD printer from primera pluged in.
I check the firm ware on both devices and they are current.
I'm thinking solar flares. Can anyone concur or suggest something else.
    Thank you.
    Waiting to print more CDs

    Hi Jeff,
Are you saying boot times are normal if it's not connected?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when you plug drive in after booted up.

  • 875P Neo FIS2R-Slow boot with Raid on Intel + Raid on Promise

    Hello all.
Here is the configuration I'm trying to set up (and almost did)
    SI 875P Neo FIS2R,MS-6758 BIOS v2.4
    P4 2.6 GHz HT
    500W 6fan total
    2x1G Kit DDR 400
2x74 G WD Raptor Raid0 (Intel S1-2) Win XP inst
    2x36 G WD Raptor Raid0 (Promise S3-4)
    GeCube X1600Pro
    DVD-RW (IDE 2 )
Win XP SP2 (All latest updates installed)
I followed the instructions as they are listed in the sticky (great job btw) and configured the 2 SATA 74G WD Raptor on Intel Raid controller(serial1&2) as Raid0 and install WindowsXP Prof sp 2 on it.
Then I configured the  2 SATA 36G WD Raptor on Promise controller(serial3&4) as Raid0 and added this  Raid to the  existing WindowsXP installation.
This set up is working very good once I'm logged into Windows with no problems at all.
The glitch is that I need 3 min waiting time till I see the windows loading logo.
I have all the latest drivers installed also IAA and INFs and my bios is as the default values except the changes mentioned in the sticky
Onboard Promise IDE - as Raid
    ON-Chip IDE Configuration:
    Native Mode
    SATA Only
    Keep SATA Active - Yes
    Keep PATA Active - Yes
    PATA Channel selection - Both
Configure SATA as Raid - Yes
I did the Win XP installation twice till now, taking care to install INFs and drivers in the right order but the result is the same...3-5 mins till I have a fully operational windows environment and after that all is running like a dream.
Now, I've searched in the forum and saw that many more people have the same problem but never read the solution to it, so if someone has ever found the way to solve this or has the same configuration please tell me how he did it. Even if someone knows that it can't be solved just drop me a line telling me so. Altough the system is running smoothly I find the 3 min waiting time unacceptable and frustrating. I've run out of ideas so please help me.
    Thanks in advance

Hello Blazer and thank you for replying.
    Answering one at a time...
are both raid arrays setup with the same stripe size?--> Yes Both arrays are configured at 16k stripes
do you see both the intel and the promise bios setup screens?-->Yes both screens (Intel(R) RAID... and Fast Built (tm) ...)appear almost instantly after MSI's logo screen showing my Raid arrays in Normal status. The delay starts after the Promise's screen till the Windows Loading logo screen.
how is the raid bootable drive identified in the boot from menu?-->
    Boot Device Priority:
1st    BBS-0 (Raid): Intel <name>  (---> this is the OS drive on Intel controller)
    2nd   Disabled
    3rd    Disabled
    Try other boot devices  NO
I have also the option to select the the Drive on Promise which shows as BBS-1 (Raid) FT 378  Ary 1  but I have left it out cause it doesn't have the OS on it.
is the OS drive labeled as C: and seen as 200GB drive [as one] from the four drive array]--> No as it shouldn't cause these are two different Raid Arrays. The first Raid on Intel's controller with the 2x74G WD Disks indeed shows as one C: 137 G and has the OS on it. The second on Promise controller with 2x36G WD Disks also shows as one D: 70G.These are two separate Arrays with 2 disks each and they show as indented.
is network boot enabled causing a delayed boot?--> I don't quit understand what you mean. In case you mean what happens  if I unplug the 2 disks from the promise controller then yes if I do that the system boots fast in the Windows even if I leave the Bios setting "configure promise as raid"!!!
My problem is similar with this post: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=69994.0

  • MOVED: Slow boot with P6N SLI and Vista

This topic has been moved to Vista problems.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108306.0

Quote from: HenryW on 12-August-07, 08:15:55
Hey Jack did you read the whole thing?
Obviously not good enough. I had a look at the official BIOS update changelogs and saw that v1.2 included fixes that have to do with S3.
    Quote
thought S1 was for sleep and S3 for hibernate.
Not exactly.  Just to make sure we are all talking about the same thing:
    Most common Important ACPI Standby-States:
    - S1
This is the most shallow sleep state. Power to CPU and RAM are maintained, fans keep spinning.
    - S3 (Suspend to RAM)
    Power to RAM is maintained.
    - S4 (Suspend to disk, Hibernate)
All content of main memory is saved on the hard drive, preserving the state of the operating system, all applications, open documents etc.  After everything was saved to disk, the system will turn off.
If I am not mistaken, all you can do in BIOS is choose between S1 and S3.  In Vista you should be able to choose beetween Standby/suspend (S1 or S3, depending on BIOS settings) and Hibernate (S4).
So again, which of the three states are you referring to?

  • Windows 8.1 - Slow Restart/Pause with SSD

    Windows community,
I am new to these forums, so forgive me if I am posting in the incorrect place.
    My system specs:
    ASUS ROG
C drive runs on an 120 GB SSD, has 33 GB of space remaining
    Processor: Intel Core i7-4700HQ @ 2.40 GHz
    RAM: 16 GB
    System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Graphics Card: Nvidia 770m, 3 GB
    My problem:
I have been experiencing slow restart times (about 1 minute).
    Details:
Not long ago, I refreshed the system, and re-installed all my programs.  Shortly thereafter, I began to experience slow restart times.  I assume that the slow restart is due to a process or driver/system update, but I cannot be sure what is causing
    my problem.
    What I see:
The blue shut down/restart screen is displayed with the little white dot animation.  After about 5-10 seconds, the animation will pause.  Then, after about 45-50 seconds, the animation will move again and the system finally restarts.
Thanks in advance for any help!  I can provide more details as needed.

    Hi Parker,
Firstly, let's update all device drivers and Windows updates.
If the issue persists, as S.Sengupta said, perform a Clean boot to see if it's caused by some third-party software or service startup with Windows.
Both of these don't work, collect the boot trace for analysis:

  • Slow boot up on 2012 Mac mini with DIY fusion drive

Hello everyone, I bought a Mac mini (2012) 2 months ago with a stock 500GB HDD.
I added another SSD to make a DIY fusion drive, and everything is working fine, except that I'm experiencing a very slow boot up.
I have confirmed both by information from the OS and some tests with command line tools, that the fusion drive itself is a success and absolutely working fine.
The slow boot up happens on cold boot only (a reboot does not have such problem).
Symptom: the Mac mini is stuck on the gray blank screen for about 40 seconds, and then finally shows up the apple logo.
Everything after this is pretty fast and fine.
I have tried the following methods and none of them seems to help:
    1. Go Preferences -> Startup Disk, select the Machintosh HD. (Suggested by Apple in the Fusion Drive FAQ)
    2. Verify the whole disk along with the partition with Disk Utility.
    3. Reset NVRAM by holding Command+Option+P+R during boot up.
    4. Reset SCM/PMU.
Does anyone have an idea on the cause of my problem?
    Best regards and thank you.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Slow Boot Times after installing new SSD and Lion

Can anyone please help interpret why I'm having slow boot times?  I have copied my console printout during the boot and it seems to be doing a repetitive action while booting.
    Thanks

  • Win 7 slow boot - login in with fingerprint reader

    Hi
I have a T400s (2.4 GHz and 4 GB) with an Intel SSD and WIn 7 RTM with latest Lenovo beta drivers.
I have the fingerprint reader activated for login and my boot time of 35 seconds is now split about half in the fingerprint login and half in the rest of the boot process.
Or described in another way if the machine is powered off and I swipe my finger to start the machine it takes about 17 seconds before the login prompt (the finger) is shown.
Then the machine shows "waiting" for 15-20 second during which my personal login icon flashes by before it completes the login and almost immediately shows the desktop.
I am surprised by the very slow login with my finger already swiped. It would be much faster to disable the fingerprint reader and log in using a password. Anyone encountered this problem and knows how to fix it?
Other problems with the boot I have found (and solved) is the use of a solid color as the Windows background which for some reason costs about 15 second in boot time!!? I also had to reflash the firmware of my SSD to gain an additional 10 seconds at the start of the boot process.

    Hi Mats,
I have a similar, if not, the same complaint. I have a T500 running Win 7, which was just upgraded from NT.
My complaint - and it goes under the topic of usabiltiy - is that it takes anywhere from a couple of seconds up to 20 seconds before a valid fingerprint scan is accepted. If it's a scan doesn't match, there's immediate feedback of an error. I wouldn't mind the delay so much if the was some immediate feedback. If I click the "other credentials" button, I can see that the machine is "validating".  If I enter my password, boom, I'm immediately logged in.
This is annoying.  Under NT, there was not such problem.  Your post is from 1 1/2 years ago. It's surprising that no one else is complaining about this. I guess most just say "forget it - I'm just using my password." But I know the process works and works nicely.  (I've run the ThinkVantage System Update as recently as Feb '11. So, the drivers are current.)
    Hey, anyone from Lenovo listening?!!
    Regards, Ed
