Slow browsing MBP Mavericks
Hello network gurus,
Summary: I experience slowness when browsing. Just my machine, not my wife's. I have ruled out ISP, wifi or browser issues. I think there is something on the OS that checks every hostname I try to access before reading from the HTTP socket.
Lately I am experiencing some very slow browsing (sometimes up to 3min to load a page). I have a late 2012 retina display 15" Macbook Pro.
The issues do not happen on my wife's 2011 iMac (Mountain Lion), which I am using as control group to confirm my findings.
The slowness noticeable both on ethernet (via thunderbolt adapter) and wireless. I have ruled out an ISP issue as it also happens when I am on an encrypted VPN that connects me to the outside world via a different ISP.
When checking the network traffic on the Chrome developer tools, I see that some resources are on "waiting" state after connection for many seconds. This means that the socket has been opened but the incoming traffic hasn't been received. It seems particularly bad when the page contains resources hosted under different hostnames (CDNs, adservers, image servers, etc). Sites optimised for fast download times (google, meneame.net), work blazing fast. News sites perform particularly badly.
I also goes slow when downloading the resources via curl on terminal (it's not the browsers), or even when I telnet to port 80 and send a simple "GET / HTTP/1.0" it takes age to get back to me with the content. All of this works fine on the wife's machine. The issue is deeper down.
I have the impression that this might be some safe browsing capability enabled at the OS level that is checking every hostname I try to access via HTTP. I have tried to access a **** site (for scientific purposes) and it works too.
I haven't tried diagnosing with a network tool yet. But I was just wondering if someone might have any ideas.

I think I found it the issue. When I installed Cisco VPN client I must have ticked on the "Web Security" feature which was the issue. This feature runs a process acwebsecagent that causes the slowness.

I am having slow page load on one of my laptops connected wirelessly. One laptop runs vista home and seems to work fine. The other runs XP professional and is slow browsing and loading web pages. The XP laptop seems fine when connected to the wired connection but slow connected wireless. Any suggestions? TIA.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Next, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If the above does not fix the problem, then proceed:
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.

Even if they are not a big problem, can anyone tell me how to get rid of the Palm and HP startup items. They are from old devices that I do not have anymore, and I would like to eradicate them from my system.Startup items are in /Library/StartupItems/
You can delete them if you are an admin user. However it doesn't remove the actual software. The safest way to do that is to either use the manufacturers uninstaller or try to find uninstall steps listed on a forum or support site.
I'm inclear on 'Oplmgr' check that is up to date if you can, since it is using the old way to load a startup job.
Palm desktop is probably version dependant (check what you have)…

Soundflower looks out of date? Grab the installer (with an uninstaller IIRC) and update or remove it.
LogMe In, TeamViewer & Splashtop are running jobs in the system level too, so I'd spend time checking they are up to date or removed if they are not needed.
The Launch Daemons and Launch Agents are 'system level, with your own user version too - User Launch Agents.
I would clean out the failed background job…

Use the Finders 'Go Menu > Go to Folder…' to open the hidden ~/Library & look in the LaunchAgents folder for the .plist & delete it.
Reboot for the Startup items to be unloaded. -
Fast internet connection but very slow browsing
Hi,
For some time now we have been struggling with very slow browsing speeds. Sometimes the web page will not even load. ADSL speed checks show a good up and down speed and shown below and everything appears to run well if we simply download a file.
Do any of the numbers below indicate any problems?
We have various pc's both hard wired and connected wirelessly and the problems are the same on all. The laptop works fine on my office connection.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Slow Browser on Loading Pictures on Facebook? Anybody Else Having These Issues?
Does anyone else have these Slow Browser Picture Loading Problems like I am having an have had for the past 2 weeks, because Att Uverse Internet cConnection has been running Super Slow? I pay for ATT High Speed Internet Connection of 24MBPS and the fastest I have had for the past 2 weeks is between 9 & 12 MBPS Download and 4.20 MBPS on the Upload.
Are those speeds wired or wireless?
A couple of things to try, disable IPv6 if enabled. Also could try Google DNS instead of the RG DNS.

Slow browsing, timeouts and pages failing to load
Hi,
Over the last few days we've been having browsing issues on multiple devices where pages are taking forever to load if at all. We're sometimes having to refresh the browser 3 or 4 times to get a page to load correctly.
Sites like speedtest, once I've got it to load show low ping speeds and the Upload / Download speeds are what I would expect on our line. I've rebooted the router and modem but this hasn't resolved the problem.
Please advise.

Neil.Hi i would just like to add to this as i have been having the exact same issues in the last around 5 days, if i look at my speeds on speedtest they are as good as they usually are but problems with not loading pages instantly disconnections from certain services but not others for as little as 5 seconds and general slow browsing has started to become incredibly annoying especially when it seems to come out of nowhere.

I've been experiencing extremely slow browsing lately and have no idea why. I've read ALL the other posts concerning this and they don't seem to apply because I don't think it's strictly a Safari issue. I've tried Firefox and IE and get the same problems on certain pages that seem to just pop up very, very quickly on my PC, which is annoying becaues I hate PCs and my MAC is (supossedly ) a lot faster. I've emptied the cache, reset the history, trashed the icons, repaired permissions, etc.
What do I do now?

Slow Browsing/Problem connecting to games

About two weeks ago I started to have a problem with my internet, webpages were slow to load, some not loading at all, and a number of games were suffering from disconnects. Upon contacting BT technical support they found a problem with our Home Hub 3.0 so sent us a new one.
However after setting up the new hub, i'm still having the exact same problems. The slow browsing is on both my PC which is connected by ethernet, and my laptop which is wireless. Despite this during peak and off-peak times, BT's speedtest is telling me that my PC has 75mb download speed and 16MB upload speeds.Have you tried changing the DNS setting to google DNS on your devices

I am having intermittent trouble with slow browsing. I have a Linksys BEFW114v4. There are 4 computers using it. One is a laptop which sometimes uses wireless, but runs faster when physically connected. The laptop experiences slow browsing rarely, another experiences it sometimes, the Mac experiences it frequently, and my pc experiences it frequently and has for the longest time. I have a cable package, tv, phone, and internet, so I called the cable company when it was running slow. As soon as I picked up the phone my pages loaded and ran well while I was talking the the rep. She said that it showed that I was not accessing the internet as all. Then she said that 37 seconds later it show as connected. They sent someone out and he said he couldn't find anything wrong, except when he called in for some info they said it looked like something was behind the modem, but they didn't know what. The technician said maybe my router old and not working properly. How would I know? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
try to access the web interface 192.168.1.1 and change the MTU=1400...you could also update the firmware if necessary

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Slow Browser (Safari) Speed Since Upgrading to 10.8
Hello- I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion last week. I have noticed a signficant slow down in browser performance since upgrading. Very slugish now. I noticed it immediately, but thought I'd give it time and different internet connections. Nope... still very noticeable.
Problem: Slow browsing speed since going from 10.7 to 10.8
Setup: 10.8.5 with latest safari, MBair 2012 w/SSD and 8GB ram - Plenty of disk space
What I've tried: Fixing permissions, cleaning cache, reseting safari, cleaning cookies, DNS (open vs. google vs. standard)
Any advice? Thx.Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same?
3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference? -
Slow iMac following Mavericks installation
Kicked off a previous thread that looked helpful for 'interrupting' despite no warning that people weren't allowed to post on it. But for anyone with their Mac running horrendously slow after installing Mavericks, try uninstalling Trusteer Rapport - seems to have done the trick for me. Wish these forums were a bit more user-friendly.
I'm sure whoever suggested creating your own Discussion wanted to make sure you got the attention you required.
It's not as though you're not allowed to "interrupt" someone else's Discussion with your own question, but that makes it less likely it will be directly addressed. Everyone's Mac starts out the same, but the moment you set it up it becomes unique with the potential for problems that are uniquely yours.

If your question elicits nothing but snippy or unhelpful responses, just close that Discussion. Incredibly slow browsing despite line speed of 3.5...
For about the last week I've had incredibly slow browsing. When I run the BT speed checker it comes back at between 3.5M and 4M. It's like the data is broken up into chunks which are separated by a lot of time. It's like the bad old days of dialup.
The speed tester comes back and said
