SLOW download/UNABLE to start hd movie
Yipes ... sorry we pushed the download and install new software button. Extremely slow download on an HD movie from itunes and then we were absolutely unable to start the movie at all unlike the previous version of software where you could start watching the movie with only a partial download. Waited for over an hour and got to 34% of movie downloaded and no play now button in sight ... not good. I'm writing this post this morning and haven't checked to see if it finished downloading .. of course I'll check this evening but we wanted to watch our movie last nite. Not happy. C'mon you guys get it together.
Oh, we have Cox cable and internet and the internet was functioning properly and fast as usual.

this is more than likely a temporary, isolated problem in your area... could be apple, more likely your ISP.. ISPs can parse different types of traffic (e.g. video) and set priority up or down for it depending on conditions in the network.. your use etc.. so regular internet traffic is fine but download a huge video file and they start to slow that download... this is referred to as throttling. they may also only start to do this if they see your usage patterns start to change... it could be a lot of things though.
the best thing you can do is do a network test.. this sends your network info to apple and they can possible address bottlenecks in your area.. apple works with companies that put distributed servers with caches of media all over the place so that downloads are quicker (closer to you and i and files don't have to go through entire internet to get to us)
but like i said this is likely just a temporary problem in your area.. my downloads work fine..

Is the problem that you can't see the CD/DVD after you insert it? It could be a simple matter of changing the Finder preferences. From within the Finder pull down the File menu and select 'Finder Preferences'. You should see the following widown appear. Add a check mark next to the 'CDs, DVDs, and iPods' section as shown below. Once you do so the inserted disks should show up on your desktop.
If you still have problems please provide more details on the specific disks you are trying to use. -

That isn't possible with Netflix.
To watch Netflix on AppleTV select "Internet" from the menu and scroll down to Netflix. Sign in to your Netflix account. Your Queue will be available and you can pick up where you left off on your iDevice or computer. -
[SOLVED] Intel PRO 4965 AGN - slow downloads/unable to connect
I've been having this problem with all the latest distros I've tried. I first tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 RC on my laptop. Then when I tried to connect to my 2wire router all the connections in the house were terminated while the laptop continually tried to connect with no result. In Kubuntu, knetworkmanager froze at 28% while the systray icon kept spinning and again all my other desktop connection's were terminated.
So, then I installed arch and had no driver recognition problems. But the problem is still there, only now I get a timeout error in the CLI instead of a perpetual connection attempt. Another weird thing is that using "iwlist wlan0 scan" will also disconnect my desktop's connection, but only if my router is listed under it. Also when using iwlist scan the first time I'll be able to see all my neighbor's routers and mine but immediately after I can only pick a few of them up for a short time.
Edit: In Vista everything works fine.

Once I do the scan I have always been able to connect. I'm using the "network-profiles" approach because I connect in different places. One thing that I still can't get working is WPA. There's only one place I try to use WPA and that's at the office. They use an Apple Airport Extreme. I don't know if it;s the fact that the access point is an Airport and I'm doing something wrong, or the fact that WPA may not be working on my lappy. It doesn't work though. (Oh, I use wpa_aupplicant for WPA stuff.)

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.
Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?
As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
SD 2.5Mbps
720p 6 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

Same problem here. I am from Brazil. Started to watch Gravity, then stopped last 18 minutes to finish. Sign out my iTunes account, sign in back and...they ask me for a new rental to watch! What? But in the bottom side they say my rental is valid within 48 hours.

HT1498 Slow Download of Movie Rental
We downloaded a movie Rental but it took 3 hours to download. We started at 8:30pm and it was finished at about 11:30pm. Our WIfi Signal strength is 5 Bars. We use Time Warner Cable for internet Connection.
1 Day later I tested the download and upload speeds at 10:30 pm. Our download speed was 492kbps.! I think I found the problem. Other thaan changing Carriers and our times to download a movie rental, are there other actions we can take to improve our speeds?Fernando, I look forward to reading someone's answer ( who's smarter than me) to your movie download dilemma.
My download issue was caused by Time Warner's daily (3:00AM) updates to their componets. Occasionally, (1 in 500 according to one of thier technicians) a cable/internet modem is "disturbed" by this update.
So even though we were paying for 40 mgps download speeds with our internet service we were getting 484 kbps download speeds for weeks. Time Warner does not test thier equipment's speeds nightly, even though, I believe it is technically possible and practical with their existing equipment ( obviously a software change would be necessary).
By "resetting" the modem (ie. unplugging it from it's power source for 10 seconds) the "problem" was resolved.
I used Speedtest.net to "ping" Time Warner's server and then called (ie. Calmly but obviously furious) Time Warner with the results!
The moral of my story is: test the speed of your internet connection and contact your ISP to get the results for which you are paying! If my story helps you, go get 'em...and get a discount!

Trying to move Acrobat 7.0 Standard (Version 7.0.9) to a new computer. found the website to download a new copy of the application. Downloaded and installed. When trying to start the application an error message immediately pops up - "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc00000fd). Click OK to close the application."

I have a Dell All-in-One that I had to send in for a new motherboard. While they had it, I had them reformat it. I'm trying to put Skype back on it, but I keep getting this error message after it downloads and when it tries to install: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application." I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. None of my other programs that I've had to reinstall have caused me a bit of trouble, but Skype will not move past this error message. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to Solution.Open Windows Event Viewer -> Custom Views -> Administrative Events. Look for the recent error messages with timestamp corresponding to Skype crash. Copy and paste here the text from the General tab.

I am using a MacBook 15" (mid-2010) with Intel i7 2.66GHz.
Currently, I write to you via my sister's laptop as mine is unable to start-up Safari or any other web browser at the moment.
After a relatively smooth OS installation of OS X Lion, I noticed that my usual apps, Evernote, Twitter, Skype, and others, were not able to start-up at all (i.e. kept bouncing in place on the dock for what seemed like forever). I have since disabled their 'Open at Login' command and now start my MacBook up with no apps running. After restarting my computer countless times, I've realised that only selected native applications are able to open. Finder, Safari, App Store, iTunes, FaceTIme and most of the Utilities. Even on Finder, right-clicking is apparent blasphemy as the window freezes and the windmill pops up, and I am forced to relaunch Finder. Safari is only able to load simple web pages such as Google.
I have attached an excerpt of my Console for you guys (I could take a screenshot but dropbox could not even open to allow me to send it to my sister's laptop). As you can see, at every refresh, the same 5 messages appear, that a particular 'com.apple.launchd.peruser.501' keeps crashing. Correct me if I'm mistaken but this is probably the process handle for Launchpad. Although I am not sure whether this is the only reason for my computer's sluggishness post-Lion update, I would really like to eliminate this possibility.
Things I have tried:
Repairing Disk Permissions
Unfortunately, this yielded no positive results as it did not seem to rectify the problem. Subsequent reparations have produced the same log, hence I don't think it's working.
Waiting for Indexing to complete
Some people have cited that the reason behind the sluggishness could be due to the fact that Spotlight was indexing my hard drive for optimal search results. I have since waited 7 hours for the indexing to complete, but am still stuck with a computer that cannot even open Twitter.
Installing Onyx
Other forum users have said that it is possible that the computer's cache has been clogged up or something. I am not entirely sure what this means but I went to attempt to download the free product that most people have recommended. Although installation was a cinch, I was not able to even start Onyx. After 10 minutes, Lion just told me that the program had been unresponsive for too long and asked me whether I wished to kill it.
I am almost certain that the overarching problem could be erroneous sharing permissions. But then again, that is no reason for my computer to behave in such a snail-like manner. I would really appreciate if you guys could provide me with some sudo commands to use in the terminal or something that can fix the problems my computer is facing, after understanding the limitations that I currently face considering the state of my MacBook.
The fact that I am writing here on this forum is that I wish to do anything other than a full reinstallation of the OS that has caused me so much anxiety (Snow Leopard was just magical compared to this pile of sh*t, pardon my language). I just want to do everything I can before having to resort to such a barbaric act (I have a lot of applications but I don't know whether I am able to restore those using Time Machine as well).
In any case, thank you guys so much for reading all the way to the end. Help of any sort, be it sincere or condescending, will be fully appreciated. Please don't hesitate to ask for more information if I have not already provided it. As I am an average user, I may not be too familiar with jargon. So if getting the information requires complicated procedures, please provide a step-by-step.
Also, tl;dr: Updated from Snow Leopard to Lion, computer became slow and buggy, tried many things, didn't work, need help.

Extremely slow download from Itunes store when on NAS
Hi All,
Since the latest Itunes update 10.6 I've been experiencing extremely slow download from the store. Set up is as follows (with all the latest firmware and software upgrades done on everything)
ITunes DB and XML locally stored on HDD
Itunes Media Folder stored on NAS DNS-323
DNS 323 NAS hardwired to network by 1000 Gb LAN Connection
Cabled Internet connection at 60Mbps
There is no issue running Itunes from the NAS to MAC / APPLETV and other devices across the network wirelessly or hardwired, except when downloading purchases from the ITunes Store. One HD tv show takes 4 hours to download and averages 1Mbps speed.
After running some test with various configuration it seems that the fact that the Downloads folder located within the ITunes Media folder (now stored on the NAS) is causing the poor download speed. When the Download folder is local on a HDD it's got no problem reaching 60Mbps.
Unfortunately there is no way to tell ITunes to keep the Downloads folder local and the ITunes Media folder on NAS, it always stays within the Itunes Media folder no matter where this folder is located.
Permitting Itunes to keep the Downloads folder locally while downloading files and transferring the files to the ITunes Media folder (wherever it's located) once it's fully downloaded might be the simple solution to this common problem.
How about testing this out Apple!I have some information to add to this. I've been seeing these problems for quite some time since I started downloading in HD. My library is rather large so I too decided to use another drive. My case is different though I have and extra 2 TB internal drive and my media folder is on it. This rules out all Wifi, network, or USB bottlenecks as a cause of the problem. I have noted a few oddities about this behavior and I will mention them here although I am not sure what they mean.
1. If I set up a long list of downloads it seems to crawl on all downloads. If I kill the "apple push" process the top two seem to speed up. I have to maintain the list and only enable two downloads at a time to get anywhere near reasonble speeds but this method is great for one or two downloads at a time.
2. I was curious about this problem after watching it download for hours on a 24MBPS connection for just a few shows. When I did yet another search I finally found this thread so I thought checking something out might be interesting. I set up some HD movies to download on my secondary system that only has one hard drive. Although not at full speed they began downloading much faster. Three movies are all downloading on the single drive system faster than the one alone on the system with the Itunes media folder on a different drive.
Both systems are hard wired to the internet.
Finding this thread made me very curious I was wondering if there would be a performance boost if I uninstalled Itunes, and re-installed it on the media drive. I really wanted that drive to be storage only but it makes me wonder if it would give different results or the same problem from not being on the OS drive.
Both systems are running Windows 7, and both are able to download streaming content, large files, or movies from other sites relatively instantly.
