Slow Mavericks and problem system launch daemons
Like some other users here I've experienced a big slowdown since installing Mavericks.
I ran EtreCheck (good app!) and I see that I have several failed Apple daemons. I don't know what they do but I guess this is not a good thing.
Can anybody shed any light on these failed daemons and what I can do to fix them? Are they likely to be part of the slow running problem?
cheers all!
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, andIdle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Third party in my problem system launch daemons
I read in another post that if I had third party links in my problem system launch daemons section, then I had a problem. I have ftp-proxy.plist listed under that section. This is my etrecheck report.

Any Input? Thanks.Symptom: You have a very large number of pageouts for having been up for only 2 days since your last boot. that averages out to 2 pageouts per minute, and since you most likely are not using your Mac 24/7, you most likely had some very high pageout rates while you were using your Mac.
A high pageout rate generally results in slow performance.
Why you have a high pageout rate is unknown, but you should look for memory hungry apps. Activity Monitor can help there.
Carbonite can add to your disk contention if it is doing backups while you are using your system. If it is doing backup during the middle of the night while you are sleeping, that is not an issue.
You could consider either running fewer memory hungry apps concurrently, or adding more RAM to your system (Crucial.com and MacSales.com are highly respected RAM vendors by this and other Mac related forums).
If you suspect 3rd party additions affecting your performance, you could boot in "Safe Mode" which will not load 3rd party stuff during boot and login. Boot holding the "Shift" key to enter Safe Mode.
You could also run 'sar -g' to monitor your pageout activity over time both in "Safe Mode" and booted normally
Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
sar -g 60 100
which will report your pageouts once a minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suit your tastes). Now use your system as you normally would, and go back and review the sar output when you notice you are experiencing performance issues. What you really want to see is mostly zeros, with an occasional blip of a few pageouts. Sustained pageouts or huge runs of high pageout numbers is an indication that you are using more RAM than you have available and should look for why, and if the app you are running really does need lots of RAM, then think about buying more. -
How do I fix problem system launch daemons?
Hi there,
I recently upgraded to Yosemite and immediately my Wired memory started taking over my RAM. I'm down to a crawl and have spent days trying to figure out what's going on. I've repaired the drive and reinstalled twice, etc. I did find through EtraCheck that I had failed problem system launch daemons. Could those be my problem? If so, what do I do to fix them?
Here's the EtreCheck info:

I ran EtreCheck and found the following problem:
Problem System Launch Daemons:
[failed] com.apple.AOSNotificationOSX.plist
[failed] com.apple.wdhelper.plist
How can I fix it? I couldn't find these files in the ~/Library.Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
I strongly recommend that you never reinstall commercial "anti-virus" products or "utilities," nor any software that changes the user interface or modifies the functions of built-in applications. If you do that, the problem is likely to recur.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. -

Slow boot and overall system sluggishness.
My Macbook Pro is booting up very slow sometimes. It will take 10-15 minutes to be usable even though there are almost no startup items. It will happen only sometimes, most of the time I will boot in about a minute like it should. Still the system will slow down from time to time, for example the photoshop file open dialogue is extremely slow as is accessing files in the finder.
I already did PRAM and SMC reset and repaired permissions using the restore partition. Below are my EtreCheck results and a bootlog from a slow boot a few days ago.

I'm having troubles getting a Launch Daemon to work. I have two that are almost identical and run to fix permissions on a pesky folder (it's a bandaid solution to a permissions problem). This launch daemon works perfectly:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>KeepAlive</key>
<false/>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.name.script1</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>chmod</string>
<string>-R</string>
<string>770</string>
<string>/Path/To/Folder</string>
</array>
<key>StartInterval</key>
<integer>600</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
However, when the folder path contains a space, it doesn't appaer to work. This is my second Launch Daemon which is not working
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>KeepAlive</key>
<false/>
<key>Label</key>
<string>com.name.script2</string>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>chmod</string>
<string>-R</string>
<string>770</string>
<string>/Path/To\ Folder/</string>
</array>
<key>StartInterval</key>
<integer>600</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
I'm not sure if I'm missing proper syntax in the plist file in order to work with a folder with a name in it. At this point changing the folder name would cause all sorts of other issues.
Thanks for your helpI should not matter, but the 2nd has a trailing slash:
<string>/Path/To/Folder</string>
<string>/Path/To\ Folder/</string> -
is anyone with an iPhone 6+ experiencing slow download and slow video streaming online? I have had the iPhone 6 Plus and I've been experiencing my app is downloading a lot slower and being unable to stream videos online
I hope someone from Apple is monitoring this site. Three days apps will not update, iOS8.0. Support told me to update to iOS8.02. Can't do that over WIFI or Cell network. Supports tells me have to link to iTUNES and do this. That takes three trys. Did that. Apps still not updating. Read online that resetting network settings will help. Did that App's hanging and not updating.
Apple how does this happen. Night before iOS8.0 release you pull things because of some security issue. Then you have iOS8.01 fiasco and now this. Can someone get this right. We use these things for more than just phones now. FIX IT
iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8 -
Slow Mavericks and Activity Monitor Uselessness
The recent Mavericks update may have improved performance to some degree, but I'm still experiencing unusual slowness of apps often. One of the most irritating things is that the one app I except to help me shed light on the cause of the slowness, Activity Monitor, typically shows NO unusual heavy system load when I observe apps being slow.
For example, I click on + in Safari to create a new tab. I expect immediate response, an immediate new tab being open. Instead, it takes maybe 5 seconds, perhaps even 10 seconds. So, I immediately switch to the Activity Monitor window to see if I can identify what might have caused the slowness. I think that maybe the CPU become extremely overloaded during that brief period. But I see nothing in Activity Monitor to clue me in as to what the problem was.
To me, this means Activity Monitor is not monitoring relevant activities. I don't know why Safari is slow opening at tab, but whatever it is doing should be an activity that Activity Monitor monitors, since it obviously is something that takes the machine a lot of time to do.
Could a knowledgeable person in Apple's software department respond here and say something about why opening a new tab in Safari takes so long?
tedPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
OfficeJet 4500 and Problem with Launching Windows Explorer (XP OS)
I installed HP OfficeJet 4500 wireless printer with XP operating system on my desktop PC in Wireless mode. Printing works fine from desktop and wireless laptops. However, when I try to access Windows Explorer on my desktop PC, using the desktop shortcut or executable file name in the "Run" menu, the screen flashes, goes blank (blue screen) then refreshes the desktop but will not launch Windows Explorer. This also occurs when I go to My Computer or Network Places and select "My Documents" or click on the root of the C: drive. The only way I can access my files is to use the actual program they were created in (i.e., Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.) I used System Restore and restored my computer to a date prior to installing the printer and this solved the problem. When I reinstalled the HP OfficeJet printer, the problem recurred, so it is definitely associated with installing the printer. Anyone have a fix for this? Thanks for your help.
Hi,
I haven't seen that issue specifically. I would download and run the HP Printer Diagnostic Utility. There might be some file conflicts during the installation that are not resolved that this utility might fix. I have a C309a AiO that had some other issue that the Diagnostic utility fixed.

I am employed by HP -
Just upgraded from Lion to Mavericks. Free download, install and reboot went fine. When I go to System Preferences to customize the desktop, etc., I can't open it. Error number is given as -1712. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions about how to fix it? Thanks!
Get onto the App Store and download/purchase the Mavericks version of iPhoto.

IMac mid07 Etrecheck: failed launch daemons
iMac mid 2007 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo OS X 10.9.4
My Mac has been crazy slow since updating, and I've followed some threads to see that I likely need to upgrade RAM to 6 gigs or retreat to Moutain Lion.
Also read to run EtreCheck: 2 primary responses were need to update Flash (I did) and:
Problem System Launch Daemons: ?
[failed] com.apple.AOSNotificationOSX.plist
[failed] com.apple.wdhelper.plist1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists
My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet. Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
Any advice is appreciated!

I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

You have a lot of third party stuff added on to your computer which is probably not compatible with Mavericks.
I bet that a safe boot will show you a speedy mac again.
A few things I can comment on:
[loaded] com.micromat.TechToolProDaemon.plist
[loaded] com.micromat.TechToolProAgent.plist
Techtool is nice but I wouldn't let it install any of its monitoring software, like this Daemon and its buddy Agent.
[loaded] com.google.keystone.agent.plist
Google drive is not compatible with Mavericks.
[not loaded] ws.agile.1PasswordAgent.plist
1Password is unnecessary, now that iCloud does keychains, and does it better.
[loaded] net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
SIMBL is a chronic offender, GUI changer.

I think you can see where I'm going with this.
You have a ton of user login items, launch agents, and user launch agents.
In some cases you have multiple copies of each. You are a promiscuous downloader!
I'd go through the list and eliminate what you don't really need, which is proably most of it.
There's so much extraneous stuff on there, if I were you, I'd backup my documents and erase the HD and do a clean install. And then start over and not install all this stuff that you don't need. You are spending a lot of time with things that change the GUI where it doesn't need changing, and monitor your mac where it doesn't need monitoring (like TechTool), as opposed to actually doing stuff with your mac. All of this extraneous stuff is costly in terms of memory and CPU cycles. But then, that's a personal choice. I try to avoid software like this and just stick to the basics: Logic, iWork, iTunes.
Just for comparison, if you're interested, here's my Etrecheck report:

Why is Mavericks slowing down my whole system?
I've had Mavericks installed since the day it was released and I'm still having slowdown problems. I've run Disk Repair and even upgraded to 8GB RAM. I'm running a late 2011 Macbook Pro and I'm losing my mind. Below are my EtreCheck results, a process recommended in another thread. Can anyone help me?
