Slow safari download speeds

While safari loads web pages very quickly, it is extremely slow when downloading documents, installers, etc... onto my computer, downloading at speeds around 5 to 10 kb/second, causing even small downloads to take ages. (A 20mb download can take up to an hour or more).
(My downloads run at about 100 to 110 kb/second on my windows PC which is connected to the same router)
I have tried stopping and then resuming downloads, but that doesn't work. Also, there is clearly nothing wrong with my internet connection, as safari loads webpages remarkably fast.
Is there any software/changes that need to be added or is it an issue within safari?

Hi there Jeff,
The slow downloading speed and other performance issues with Safari may be related to unsupported third-party add-ons. Take a look at the article linked below and try to remove any outdated add-ons for Safari.
Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues - Apple Support

  • Slow wifi download speeds on 3gs??

Is anyone else experiencing slow wifi download speeds?? I upgraded from a first gen iPhone to the 3gs & the first thing I noticed was downloading stuff from iTunes, app store, or YouTube, Takes forever!! Example... If I put both of my phones side by side, both connected to wifi, start downloading a 36 mb podcast at the same time, my first gen iPhone will finish the file in about 2 mins and my new 3gs will take anywhere from 8 to 10 mins. Is there a problem with the 3.0 firmware or is the problem just my phone?? Any help would be much appreciated!!

I'v been dealing all day on this issue, I upgraded to the 3GS model and my wife still has the 3g, I don't have the fastest network at my house (1.5 meg) but her phone is coming in about 1021kbps and mine is 241, which seem like a big difference, especially when trying to view youtube, apple store just gave me a new phone, and it still has the same problem. I reset it, restored it, replaced it, and after replacing it I did not restore from backup but still have the same issue. I do access internet via a time capsule for whatever thats worth, and I also checked with tech support about that being the problem and we found that to not be the problem. *****, I paid $300 and committed to AT&T for another 2 years, for internet at a quarter of the speed...

  • Where's the problem: Safari/Download Speed/ISP?

My connection speed has been shaped to 64kbps and something funny is now happening to my internet other than being slow. The thing is, I can handle the slow speed; what I can't handle is the download speed dropping to zero and staying there.
I have Menu Meters showing download speed in the Toolbar so that I can monitor what's happening. What I want to know is: why does connecting to a website be progressing well at 64 kbps, then drop to 0 after a minute or two? The internet connection itself is not lost. If I stop the download with the "X" in the address bar and the restart, the speed goes up to 64kbps again. I usually have several tabs open when I am in Safari so that I can jump between them when the speed is slow. But that doesn't work when the speed is zero.
I'm pretty confident that when I am unshaped at the start of the new billing cycle, and the speed goes back up to 3 Mbps, that things will return to normal.
Q1: Is this loss of connection caused by the slow speed? i.e. is the website saying to Safari: "Hey, the connection is too slow, I'm dropping you". A bit like an aircraft flying at too low a speed. It can't keep flying, it stalls.
Q2: Is this likely to be caused by time-out? i.e. the website saying "Hey, this is taking too long. Get lost!"
Q3: Is it a problem in Safari? I'll answer that one – not likely, because Google Chrome does the same thing.
As I said, slow I can handle. What I can't handle is nothing at all. Any suggestions as to the cause of this will be most appreciated. I am running Safari 5.1.4 under OSX 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
P.S. I just opened Activity Monitor and saw the Google Downloads is operational. Maybe that's hogging all the download speed. That leads to two more questions.
Q4. Is it possible to stop all internet traffic except via Safari?
Q5. How do I stop Google Downloads from downloading?

same problems on my systems still as well. none of the "fixes" work for me at all.
i've had to switch from safari(3.0.3) to firefox because of this.
i really would love to get back to using safari, since it's my browser of choice as well.
its going on over a month of this nonsense now.

  • Safari download speed

Downloads on Safari are seeming sluggish, so I have been doing speed tests on my cable internet and find that the Safari downloads are 40-50% slower than the same tests run on Firefox. Any ideas of what to check? I am running a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac w/4GB ram with my internet coming through an N enabled Airport Extreme base station.

    HI Jason,
Try maintenance and see if it helps...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If Safari unexpectedly quits, it could be a 3rd party plugins causing the problem. Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move any 3rd party plugins to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, if you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Quit Safari then relaunch.
While you have the Get Info window open for Safari, make sure it's not running in Rosetta.
    http://www.opendns.com/start/
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ Move the Cache.db file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Slow Internet download speed, OSX 10.9.5

Since updated to 10.9.5, my Mac Pro Internet download speed down to 7 Mbps,
and same on My MacBook Pro 10.9.5 too. both use to be 70 Mbps.
I am paying $50.00 extra to get the highest speed from Time Warner.
My iMac is 10.9.3, tops 70 Mbps.
My iPhone 5s tops tops 30 Mbps
    All in same WiFi network.
Upload speed all seem to be fine with 5 Mbps.
    Mac Pro = Mid 2010
Processor  2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
Mac Book Pro = Retina, 13-inch Late 2012
    Memory = 8 GB
    Something wrong!

Even the 'respected' tools like Onyx, if you look at what (each and every update) states in the "what is new" and changes will be to improve compatibility.
Never use or install anything (and I include OS X updates in that category) without cloning your system and having TimeMachine that is current, and backup(s) that will be off line.
Some cannot be trashed or deleted or removed without using an "uninstall app" or the installer, doing so without can mean having to reinstall first.
Or wipe the drive and restore from a known good backup set.

  • Slow BT download speed

i just wonder is it part of OSX nature for slow BT download rate or juts some setting problem .
    Same torrent ,same condition.
ON OSX using Transmission or Azureus with port OPEN
alway only get about 1/3 -1/2 speed for the same torrent compare with Utorrent on XP.
is there any thing i can do to improve the download speed ?
    thx a lot.

Whilst software (especially music!) is much better and (in the long run) cheaper when bought from licensed shops etc (if you are e.g. a student, you often get stuff at 1/2 - 1/10th of the price!), more to your question, download speeds can vary dramatically, depending on time of the day, firewalls and available feeds.
Some broadband providers use telephone lines, some dedicated cable. Others mostly support (Windows PC's) and their platforms may not be set up for Macintosh.
Finally, e.g. someone in the UK, you do not make it clear, whether you refer to "British Telecom" (BT), whose down and upload speeds are not that impressive at times, OR are referring to "Bittorrent".
Hope you find some of the above useful.

  • Virgin 100MB vs Safari Download Speed

    So...
I have a Virgin SuperHub with a 100Mb internet plan.
I'm trying to download Eve Online (7.44GB) but only reaching download speeds of 9-10Mbps.
Am I right in thinking my Virgin internet plan means I am able to download at 100Mbps?
I have checked my speed with SpeedTest.net and had 120Mbps.
I have looked in router setting for firmware upgrade but couldn't find it and all seems to be well as I'm getting the speeds on SpeedTest.net.
Is there something I can do to increase the speed with Safari?
    Thanks

Yup. No ISP, internet provider, lists their speeds in Mega Bytes. It is always mega bits.
Just like Ethernet connections 10mb 100mb and giga bit/1000mb. Then you divide that by 8.
So all in all you have a very fast connection. Mine is only 30mb over cable. Which is much better then the 3mb DSL connection I use to have.

So Virgin's internet service is in mega bits not Bytes? That would explain my conunrdum.

  • Slower 4G Download Speeds and Higher Pings Tonight

Stillwater, OK. Tonight, the DL speeds and ping times are worse than normal. UL speeds are unaffected.
Normal speeds, representative of the last few weeks...
Tonight's speeds (similar results to different test servers in the area)...
Ping times have more than doubled, and the download speed has been cut to ~25% of normal. If I try a test server on the east coast, I get something like the following (bad UL speeds too)...
Scary to think this could be due to the tower becoming overloaded (it is prime time) so early in the 4G game. The only other thing I can think of is that its particularly humid tonight, but why would that affect mainly the DL speed and not the UL speed?

Speeds were still slow this morning, so I power-cycled the modem (and router). Speeds are back to normal, so it seems like I just needed to reboot the gear.

  • Slow 3G Download Speed

I've been having slow download speeds on my Iphone 3G for the 3G connection. I've had the phone for about 2 months and its been perfect until the speeds shot down in last two weeks. I did a scan on testmyiphone.com on my 3G download stream and it ended up being 0.11 MBPS. I did the same scan at the same location with my mates iphone and he had 1.5MBPS so it can't be location. I've tried reseting the network settings and restoring the phone but nothing has solved the issue. Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

  • Using Speedtest, all my iOS 7.1 devices are showing slow internet download speeds on my home WiFi network.

I have four iOS devices, an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4, and an iPad2.  All but the iPad2 are running iOS 7.1.  The iPad2 is still iOS 7.0.4.  I am only getting 1mbs download speeds with the iOS 7.1 devices.  The iPad2, as well as my Windows 7 laptop on the same WiFi network, are getting a full 15mbs download speed using the Ookla Speedtest.  I have tried resetting the wireless router, as well as resetting the network configurations on the iOS devices, rebooting the devices, etc., but the slow speeds persist.  While I can't definitively tie the issue to the iOS 7.1 upgrade, I distinctly recall running speedtests on the iPad Air in the past, and getting 15mbs.
    Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks for the reply, Jim.  I double-checked my wireless router settings against the recommendations in the link you provided.  Only one setting was different.  I had the 2.4GHz channel width set to auto, and the recommendation is 20MHz.  I made this change.  The 5GHz channel is disabled on my router.
After the change, I got mixed results.  My iPhone 5S now gets over 15Mbs, but my iPad Air gets less than 1Mbs.  My iPad2, as well as my laptop, continue to get over 15Mbs.  I don't think the issue is with the router configuration at this time.  Any other suggestions?

  • Super-slow FTP download speed

I recently switched from Time Warner to Verizon FiOS and it's been a whole lot better in terms of service except for one thing: FTP speed. When I log into Filezilla and try to download something, my download speed plummets to 30 kb/s and slower. I've tried switching FTP clients and saw no change, and tried accessing my ftp via Firefox and Chrome; neither option changed my slow as molasses FTP speeds. There's no problem with my connection (I'm wired, not wireless) and my speeds are reading as higher than advertised.
Is there something I'm not checking for or is Verizon simply throttling my FTP DL speed?

I use FireZilla all the time and have no problems with transfer speeds.
Some FTP sites run slower than others, but I chalk that up to slower links between "here" and "there."
I've never seen any real evidence of throttling by Verizon on any service.
    Good Luck.

  • Very slow iTunes download speeds

I've been having slow download speeds in iTunes for a while now. Downloading a 1 hour TV Show used to take 1 hour or so. Now it's taking 11 hours. Xfinity speed tests say I'm getting 28 mb/s downloads.
    Some info:
    iTunes 10.6 for Windows
Apple Air Extreme - the pc is hard wired to the router
    Comcast as ISP
    Using my ISP's DNS servers

I have a 50x5 Mbit cable business class modem, from Time Warner, in my house (doing that give me priority bandwidth over other residences).... Also as a business class there's no data caps or port blockings.  The most I EVER get from the iTunes Store is 4-5MBytes/sec (about 35 Mbits)... Usually I get 1-2 MBytes/sec to iTunes or any device
    My guesses are
    1) Apple just doesn't have the bandwidth during certain times
    2) I notice they throttle accounts. If I download an entire hd season, I start out fast, then it slows after a few hrs... Im guessing apple has a max data cap per day then slows you down.
    3) I also don't think Apple is capable of handling all the new 35-50Mbit connections that are now readily available from the big cable companies.
    Im in Charlotte, NC, USA

  • Lenovo a7000 slow wifi downloading speed

i have lenovo a7000 which gives slow downloading speed in wifi with good wifi signal. please tell me anyone how to fix this issue.

    hi nestharus,
    Welcome to the Forums.
If you have the Atheros AR9485 Wireless Adapter, can you try this driver:
Drivers for Atheros AR9485 and Windows 8
    Version: 10.0.0.234
    OS: Windows 8 32/64bit
    File: win8-10.0.0.234-whql.zip
Alternativey, does the issue happens also if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking? (if you get a stable good download then it's possible that a security software is interferring with the wireless connection).
    Edit:
Using the Dink Wireless AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter will definitely improve the performance (you may need to set it to 2.4Ghz if you only have a single band router)

  • Very Slow LTE download Speeds..

Hello all..I live in Bridgeport Connecticut, and i own a Galaxy nexus 4G LTE...I'm curious as to why i get such slow download speeds with my Galaxy Nexus. The Galaxy Nexus Download speeds becomes extremely apparent compared to My sisters Iphone 5 ..I did 15 speed tests on both device The Galaxy Nexus and the Iphone 5.The iPhone got between 12-16 MBPS..My nexus got as low as 1.6 MBPS, and seemed to average around 2.4 MBPS..the highest was 3.9 MBPS. I used the speedtest.net android app and the servers etc were all the same..The nexus runs the stock jellybean firmware.
I love the nexus. However, i feel cheated that the iphone 5 gets about 500-600% higher download speeds..I think something software wise if holding the nexus back from acheive true LTE speeds available in this area.

Looking at forums today to see if this was reported and if there is a remedy. I share tino4342's problem and I live clear across the country in Snohomish, Washington. At a given spot in my home, my Galaxy Nexus 4.1.1 (locked) gets 2 mbps download speed while a Verizon iPhone 5 sitting next to my GN gets around 12 mbps, both tested using speedtest.net. In various other spots around town, the iPhone 5 download speed is at least 5 times faster than the Galaxy Nexus (both on Verizon).
This is absolutely not cool.  I chatted with Verizon chat service and they said the LTE antenna on iPhone 5 was better. That has to be the biggest bogus point I've heard since the protocols they use should be the same and yield the same output. It has to be the placement of LTE Antenna in the Galaxy Nexus which is blocking the signal.  I think Verizon should come up with some sort of remedy/partial refund for selling LTE phone that isn't! or if the hardware is faulty, they need to own up to it and replace it. Looking forward to a Verizon response on this issue.

  • Slow BB download speed after 16:30. Works fine in ...

I'm at wits end with BT and the service I receive. I only wish I could choose to pay a 10th of the price for the service I receive. I have tried to use the BT call centre with no avail. The words “chasing ones tail” spring to mind. Hence adding my troubles to the already growing forum.
As the performance is there during the day, this doesn’t sound like a hardware problem, but something that BT is doing on their side when the demand gets high. I can fully understand a drop in download speed, but I think a 10th of the speed is over the top.
    Please can someone help??
     My Problem:
After 16:30 the BB service starts to move at dial-up speeds, but will work fine again after 02:00 am... Yes I am that sad that I have tried to work at that time.
I have run the BT speedtest and speedtest.net a number of times during the day to try to see what is happening:
