Slow typing in SQL Developer Worksheet
I've seen Oracle SQL Developer 2.1 - Slow SQL Worksheet while typing and my setting for >Tools >Preferences >Database >Worksheet >Select default to look for scripts is, and always has been, blank.
But as soon as I connect to a database the resultant worksheet is showing what Ive typed about 10 seconds after I've typed it. Is there any update on this issue since the post above (I searched but found nothing)?
I'm on:

Slow typing using SQL workspace
I've noticed several people have reported similar problems when typing in the sql workspace the responsive is extremely slow, i've tried the recomendations posted on other messages but to no success.
What i noticed when i look at Help->About->Properties
there a couple that point to network drive which i'm guessing may be used to store temp data and maybe the cause of the problem (i've had similar issues with other applications picking up network drives for some working directories)
The properties in question:
ide.work.dir
ide.work.dir.base
user.home
Anyone know how i can change ide.work.dir and ide.work.dir.base to verify if they are the problem or know if they could potentially be the cause of the slow use of the editor.
thanks
AndrewStrange it usually works fine for most of the properties, but in this case i guess the path is set somewhere else and cannot be overridden in a config file.
if a developer sees this thread and feels like helping, he may be able to look at the code and tell us how to change this, in the meantime, you can try to meddle with the windows properties themselves by creating a batch file and setting override properties there.
I tried to override the default HOMEPATH and USERPROFILE env variables with little success, but i'm short on time so maybe you can meddle a bit more and get it to work.
to create a batch file with overrides create a "test.bat" file in the SQL Developer install folder where the sqldeveloper.exe file is located and put in there something like:
set HOMEPATH=c:\temp
start sqldeveloper.exe -
SQL Developer Worksheet freezes
Hi All,
I'm using SQL Developer 3.1.07.42
I'm having issues where when im in the worksheet, it will freeze for up to 20 seconds.
This usually happens when im trying to change code, or even just clicking to a pre-existing line.
Is there anything i can do to stop this?
Cheers,

SQL Developer works great, but is taking up to a minute to start upon clicking of the Windows executable. Any idea why?
Hi,
SQL Developer has its own forum: SQL Developer

Copying from Oracle SQL Developer Worksheet doesn't retain formatting (font, color etc...)in Microsoft Word but copying from other programs such as
visual studio, chrome browser etc works fine. This doesn't work even after changed the setting to Keep Source formatting of Options-> Copy and Paste SettingsHi,
I notice that you have cross posted in Answers forum and Oracle forum. Have you tried Mr. Peter's suggestion?
Then, I recommend we check the Word settings:
1. Go to: Options > Advanced > Cut, Copy and Paste
2. Make sure that Use smart cut and paste is ticked.
3. Click the Settings button next to this option
4. Make sure that Smart Style
Behavior is checked.
If the issue still exists, please upload a sample through One Drive, I want to test.
Regards,
George Zhao

Hello,
I am using SQL Developer recent release EA 4.0.0.3.2.09 build main 12.84 (and another user on EA 4.0.0.13 build main 13.30) run into this error when query IBY_EXT_BANK_ACCOUNTS in Oracle EBS R12
ORA-29275: partial multibyte character
29275. 00000 - "partial multibyte character"
*Cause: The requested read operation could not complete because a partial
multibyte character was found at the end of the input.
*Action: Ensure that the complete multibyte character is sent from the
remote server and retry the operation. Or read the partial
multibyte character as RAW.
The issue appears to be this one:
ORA-29275: Partial Multibyte Character Querying IBY_EXT_BANK_ACCOUNTS (Doc ID 806024.1)
However, prior versions of SQL Developer (eg 3.2.09) work fine with the same query so this appears to be a regression in the new version of SQL Developer? I am using the OCI/thick drivers (and the 3.2.09 user is not).

SQL Developer High Memory Consumption 3.2.20.09.87
Hello,
I have been using SQL developer for quite some time and had initially had problems in the past with high memory consuption when I use this tool.
I have received and applied advice from this forum and while it had helped a little, the majority of the high memory consuption remained an issue.
I finally got more time to dig around and try to specifically isolate where the problem seems to be coming from and here is what I found.
*1)* I have removed the Check for Updates feature
*2)* I have turned off many of the extensions except for DBA Navigator, Real Time SQL Monitoring, SearchBar and Snippet.
*3)* When I start a fresh SQL Developer Session and initiate a Oracle Connection the application consumes roughly 148 meg fo RAM
*4)* When I open my Windows Task Manager and watch the memory allocated to SQL Developer I notice it goes up when I move my mouse over the SQL Developer tool and When I run through menus at roughly 5k a second or so and the memory is never released back to the system.
*5)* When I run a Large SQL to the grid the memory jumps by about 100 meg or so and will continue to do so every time I repeat the SQL until SQL Developer consumes roughly 748 meg of RAM.
*6)* 748 Meg of RAM seems to be the number when SQL Developer (with one Oracle connection) no longer continues to consume more and then not return the memory to the system.
Is there a way to have SQL Developer automatically clear up it's active memory usage without closing it down and restarting it?
Why does SQL Developer continue to consume more and more memory just from moving your mouse over it and/or by navigating menus?
Here is my About Detail;

Thank you.
I applied fixed noted in Re: Reduce SQLDeveloper memory footprint with JDK 1.7
For others, to summarize my changes.
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
AddVMOption -XX:+UseG1GC
AddVMOption -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=50
AddVMOption -XX:GCPauseIntervalMillis=200
AddVMOption -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
AddVMOption -Xms50M
AddVMOption -Xmx384M
AddVMOption -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=10
AddVMOption -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=10
product\11.2.0\client_3\sqldeveloper\ide\bin\ide.conf
comment the following two lines as shown below
#AddVMOption -Xmx640M
#AddVMOption -Xms128M
Now SQL Developer runs at roughly 500 meg.
I guess the only thing I have left to ask others reviewing this would be if there is a way to get these memory values down without having much adverse impacts on SQL Developer based on newer JVM switches/functionalities.
The posts that drove these changes are old from a technologoical perspective :) 2010.
Tom -
Hi, I upgraded SQL developer yesterday to the latest version. Now I don't see anything any more in the datagrid, columns, constraints, etc ...
Connection is OK, in the explorer (to the left) I see tables and columns, in the datagrid (table properties) I don't see anything.
Here is the contents of the about box
Many thanks

Oracle SQL Developer does not browse Sybase's objects
I had installed and configured jtds-1.2.5.jar in Oracle SQL Developer for Sysbase connection. Oracle SQL Developer does not browse any objects. Why? Can you please provide a solution?
Hi,
Can you provide some more information into what you are experiencing.
What version of SQL Developer are you using?
Did you install the jtds jar under the
Tools > Preferences > Database > Third Party JDBC Driver
Is the Sybase tab available in the new connection dialog?
Did you select the default database in the connection dialog?
Can you run a query against the Sybase database from the SQL Developer worksheet?
Note that JTDS 1.2 is the only supported version. There maybe issues with other versions.

Dermot.

SQL Developer find-replace in selection replaces everywhere when using scope Prompted
SQL Developer version: 4.0.0.12
I didn't test this in 3.x, might be interesting to do so.
How to reproduce:
- copy paste the the following example text to your SQL Developer worksheet
test
test
test
- Select the first line
- open the find and replace dialog
- Text to search for: "test"
- Select replace with, and fill out "example"
- select "Selected Text only"
- select Scope "Prompted" <- this step is essential for this bug, Scope "All" and "single" work fine
- Click OK
- In the hover-dialog you will get an option to choose "yes" "no" or "all"
- If you select "all", all three instances of "test" will be replaced, not just the one that was selected.
- If you click "yes" multiple times, it will also go over the non-selected instances.
How to fix:
My guess is that once the find-replace dialog closes to show the hover-dialog, the selection is lost since the worksheet lost focus.
So, store in memory what lines where selected, don't re-read that information from the worksheet.SQL Developer version: 4.0.0.12

SQL Developer BRIDGE command from command line on Windows environment
Is it possible to call SQL Developer BRIDGE command from command line on Windows environment?
Hi <please supply your name>,
SQL Developer Worksheet is not available from the command line.
The BRIDGE command is only supported in the Worksheet.
Its an interesting idea though. Are you trying to script data move from a non Oracle database to an Oracle database using the BRIDGE command?
The BRIDGE command was initially done to allow a simple data move from a non Oracle database to Oracle. We then build the "Copy to Oracle" feature out of it.
http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/cross-database-bridge-statement.html
http://dermotoneill.blogspot.com/2010/11/copy-to-oracle.html
Since the BRIDGE command references connection names, which have to be defined in UI of SQL Developer any solution to run this on the command line would have to work this out.
There are number of ways you can do this without using the BRIDGE command.
1) Perform a capture/convert of your non Oracle database and then generate the "offline" data move scripts.
Theses scripts use SQL*Loader and your non Oracle database tool (Ex: Sybase BCP).
These are run from the command line and can be modified ....
2) Use a database link from your Oracle database to your non Oracle database and reference /query the data that way.
I would interested to hear your thoughts.

felipe.bHello,
I get the same error after updating through Help->Check for Updates. I am at version 1.1.2.25 and the update does not change the version number of Oracle SQL Developer (Help->About), it remains at 1.1.2.25 (although if I look in extensions tab, it says: oracle.sqldeveloper 1.1.3.27.66 Loaded, possible bug in displaying version number?). These are the updates applied:
Upgraded Extensions
Oracle Microsoft Access Browser version 1.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - Snippet version 10.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer version 1.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - Reports version 10.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Server Browser version 1.1.3.27.66
Oracle MySQL Browser version 1.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - Worksheet version 10.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - Extras version 1.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - SearchBar version 10.1.3.27.66
Oracle SQL Developer - Object Viewer version 10.1.3.27.66
I ran the update several times and was able to reproduce the error under a specific condition. If I am connected to a database at the time of the update I get the error. If I am not conneceted at the time of the update I do not get the error.
As stated, by Donal, sql developer seems to get over the problem after restarting itself twice.

SQL Developer Slow typing - v2.1.0.63 on Windows 7 (32bit)
Ever since changing to a laptop with Windows 7 (32 bit), and to SQL Developer 2.1, ---- FROM Windows XP and SQL Dev 1.5.1 which worked very well --- I have had a drastic change in response time typing into the editor area.
My only symptoms were waiting for my typing to show up on the screen. It tried to fill in keywords slowly. I was used to it showing me table names and column names to use in the old version -- didn't happen in new version -- but at least I could run my scripts. Also I didn't like the new way of keeping the old Query Result tabs open ... I was surprised about that. Now I have to specifically close each one.
So then I tried to 'fix' the slowness by changing my settings a bit. I have no idea what half that stuff is refering to in the Tools > Preferences area. I must have really messed it up. :( Now I can't hardly see anything - parts are missing ... I have to Wait and wait and wait for it to respond to a mere click....
The page doesn't fill properly, I have to 'hover' over some parts to get them to show, I have to click on other parts to get the full script to show, ---- I did finally run 1 script. The drop down lists from the top stay there - i.e. can't get the focus to change -- the lists stay down (in a ghostly way - half there) even though I'm trying to get into another list. (Hope that makes sense... like Tools, Help, View).
The only things I do in SQL Developer are: SQL scripts. That's it. I open files and run them. I open various connections. I type in SQL commands and run them. I'm not asking for all these bells and whistles that seem to really slow it down. I want to find my DB objects occasionally using a wildcard.
This is awful! What happened to SQL Developer?? I used to love it!
Somebody please help me get it back!
Thank you.First of all, did you install in a new, clean directory? Else you'll have a corrupted installation.
Second, better start over with clean settings; deleting the [Windows user profile]\Application Data\SQL Developer\systemXXX dir will restore settings to default.
Third, you could skip the above and start over with the latest v3.0...
Hope that helps,

SQL Developer incredibly slow to load Application Schema ~15 minutes
Hi, I am evaluating SQL Developer to see if it is a viable alternative to TOAD and although it compares favourably on it's functionality offering it is unusable when I try to connect to a remote applications database. It seems to attempt to load all PL/SQL objects from the remote server even if I am only opening a single procedure or package.
For example, if i want to view the packages in the apps schema then I expand the packages tree control in the connections browser. This takes ~15 minutes to complete! TOAD, while also slow, takes ~30 to 40 seconds.
This obviously makes the tool useless. Does anyone else get this problem?Just to clarify, the slowness is only seen in packages? Or when loading the list of procedures or functions as well?
Can you run the following SQL in the worksheet? Replace the :SCHEMA binds with the schema you are querying (so 'HR' or whatever), and execute it using the 'Run Script' button (or F5). The join in the query seems slow, but I wanted to see if that seems to be the majority of the problem, or if there is something else wrong as well (a fetch size issue, or a problem when we create the actual nodes in the tree).
SELECT OBJECT_NAME, OBJECT_ID,
DECODE(STATUS, 'INVALID', 'TRUE', 'FALSE') INVALID,
'TRUE' runnable,
NVL( b.HAS_BODY, 'FALSE') HAS_BODY
FROM SYS.ALL_OBJECTS a,
(SELECT 'TRUE' HAS_BODY, object_name tmp_name FROM SYS.ALL_OBJECTS WHERE OWNER = :SCHEMA AND OBJECT_TYPE = 'PACKAGE BODY') b
WHERE OWNER = :SCHEMA
AND OBJECT_TYPE = 'PACKAGE'
AND object_name = tmp_name (+)
AND SUBOBJECT_NAME IS NULL
AND OBJECT_ID NOT IN ( SELECT PURGE_OBJECT FROM RECYCLEBIN )
Thanks,

Calling from the application Slow vs. Running through SQL developer Fast
Alright, we write many applications that make use of calling stored procedures in packages to return data. This is the only time i have ever encountered this issue and have not been able to pinpoint the cause.
This application is very data-centric and is filled with calls to stored procedures and I would say about 80% run fine as in the time required to run is about the same as in SQL Developer maybe just a little slower due to the amount of data that may be returned to the application. The other 20% run horribly slow from the application and run lighting fast in SQL Developer and i cannot figure out why.
I have traced the code right up to the .Fill on the Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleDataAdapter and that is where it just holds either for a long period of time or just forever, some of these i haved waited hours for and they have not finished running.
For Example: I created a new page in the project and it makes a request through the use of ajax, when the request file is reached it performs two stored procedures from the same package (the only two procedures in the package). Both procedures take in three varchar2's and have an in out cursor, the cursor is returned into a datatable in the VB. The first query runs in a couple seconds returns the correct data etc. The second query, which takes .2 seconds on average to run from SQL Developer, just runs and runs and i have never actually even waited for it to finish because it takes so long. The specific example i am trying only returns 1 row with 7 columns, so there is not a large amount of data being passed back.
I have seen this sort of thing happen on occasions, but everytime it was usually because the package was not compiled and was waiting on a view to finish before compilation and after killing the view it was fine. But this issue seems to happen randomnly with certain procedures and not others all in the same package.
This issue happens on the same procedures everytime which would lead me to believe it is the procedure, but running them in SQL Developer shows me this is incorrect because they run exceptionally fast in some cases. I even went so far as to restart the entire database just in case there was some sort of lock causing this issue but this did not fix the issue.
I have verified parameters, cursors, debugged the procedures, stepped every line of code, tried deleting and readding the oracle.dataAccess reference. I can't seem to figure this one out.
It is causing alot of wasted time because i am forced to wait a horribly long time for these queries in order to test. If anyone has any clues, hints, or ideas as to what this could be please let me know! If the same issue exists when the application is moved into production it will be unnacceptable and the application utterly unusable.
Thanks in Advance for any help!
-JarrodHi,
This is consistently reproducible with the problem procedure/operations? Total WAG here, but I've seen cases where having support for distributed transactions enabled causes the database to disable certain optimizations. Try setting Enlist=false in your connection string.
Otherwise, I'd recommend enabling 10046 database trace and client side sqlnet trace to capture the problem behavior for further investigation. Oracle support can certainly give you a hand with that if needed.
Hope it helps,
Greg
