Slow wi-Fi internet connections and drop outs after MBP wakes up

Hello,
I have the new MBP 17 and recurring issues with the Aiport/Internet connections with my TC 500 Dual Band:
After the MBP wakes from sleep mode, I have recurring drop outs with regard to my internet connection. Airport connection shows me the full 4 bars and tells me I am connected, but Safari loads internet pages to no avail. I then usually deactivate my airport for 5 seconds, then reactivate it. The connection usually is better after that, but I do still have drop out issues every so often.
Anyone experiencing the same problem?
Would resetting SMC have any effect on this?
Thanks

I've had a similar problem at home - it's been exasperating.
It appears to be not just one thing but a collection of things causing the problems. The recent firmware update combined with driver updates in 10.5.6+ is one thing, but also there are some keychain issues, waking from sleep issues and interference issues.
When the MBP firmware was updated (10.5.6 / 10.5.7) I can't be sure exactly I noticed that my wi-fi signal was effected much more by interference. I'm using b/g as I have iPhones on the same network as my MBP at home. I ruled out router issues by testing with various other machines (Macs and PC's) - and on different wi-fi networks (my office).
The other machines didn't suffer the same problems at home and my machine did suffer the same problem at work,
I have a feeling that the driver / firmware update combined with several Airport Passwords (for the same network) appearing in your keychain conspired together to create the issue. When the Airport Signal dropped below a certain strength (by sleeping or by moving to another room) and there is a lot of interference from other wi-fi networks - your machine fails to reconnect correctly to your wi-fi network.
Often your network doesn't even show up in the available network lists. When it does - the keychain issue appears to cause a network timeout when re-connecting and therefore the connection fails and you get stuck in an annoying loop.
Moving my MBP close to the wi-fi router causes is to re-connect - which is why I believe it is related to signal strength. Also using a n only network rather than b/g helps considerably (n suffers from less interference). This however is not a fix as I have an iphone (which requires b/g) and I like to use my MBP more than 3 meters away from my wi-fi router.
Also on identical machines in my office (10.5.6 and 10.5.7) I didn't have the problem. The only real difference was those machines didn't sync with .mac and share the same keychain. Further more testing some of those machines on my home network they had no problems.
I tried loads and loads of things to fix this. In the end it wasn't one thing that did it, but a whole series of them.
1 - Delete all your Airport Passwords from your keychain.
2 - Ensure that if you are using .mac syncing you replace the .mac keychain from your current machine.
3 - Trash all your network preferences (including network interfaces and remembered networks)
4 - Zap your PRAM
5 - Resent your SMC
6 - Re-connect to your wi-fi network
And that appears to have worked for me. So far anyway.

  • Internet Connection Sporadically Drops Out

This problem has been ongoing for several months now.  Usually one or more times a day the internet connection will drop out, usually for a few minutes at a time.  Sometimes I get the yellow triangle in the taskbar, other times I don't.  I've gone back and forth with customer service several times.  Earlier this week they replaced my router to no avail.  They now tell me there are no connection drops or errors in the event logs and have tried to blame my computer/NIC.  I explained to them that it's not the connection between my NIC and the router that is breaking, but rather the connection between the router and the internet, or the connection between the router and the FiOS box.  Either way it's on the other side of the router.  I don't know why it doesn't show up in the event logs, but it is just about a daily occurrence.  So far the haven't even offered to sent a tech out.  I've gone back and forth like four or five times now, and I know the customer service reps are just trying to help, but so far it hasn't done any good.  The issue obviously needs to be escalated, so I figured I'd try here first.  Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?  Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and been told there's no flags or errors in the event logs?  Thank you for your help.

  • 3G connection keeps dropping out after 4.2.1 update

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone could help me.
I have the iPhone 4, and it was working perfectly... until I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1.
Ever since then, my 3G connection keeps dropping out, and I'm just left with vodafone UK (with usually 3-4 bar signal) but no 'o', 'E' or '3G' symbol.
After about 20 minutes of no cellular data, I'd get the 'o' symbol, then 10 seconds later it would change to '3G'. But then after 5 seconds it would lose it. The cycle would continue in this way.
Strangely, when at home, the 3G would stay connected. But when I go anywhere, I lose 3G.
When I turn 3G off, I get constant 'o' connection where ever I go. It doesn't drop out.
I've tried resetting the phone, and resetting network settings.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I'm having a similar issue with my new iPhone 4 (w/ 4.2.1)... It continually cycles through the following sequence:
    AT&T / 3G
    AT&T / No Data
    Searching…
    Searching… 3G
    AT&T / 3G
    (loops…)
Here is a video of the cycling. Note the iPhone 4 is just sitting on a coffee table in my house.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7186070/ip4fw421searching.mov
Also worth noting, I just got the iPhone 4 and I updated it to 4.2.1 right away. Previously, I had a 3GS which did not exhibit any of this behavior in the same location in my house. Also, my girlfriend still has a 3GS and has FW 4.2.1 without these issues. I have a video of her phone in the exact same location taken just after the clip above and her phone maintains 3-bars / AT&T / 3G the entire time.
I picked up the iPhone 4 while out of state over the holiday weekend and did not observe any of these connectivity issues, in fact the 3G throughput of the iPhone 4 was significantly better (consistently got >4 Mbps down / >800 Kbps up) than what my family members were seeing with their 3GS models.
I believe it is a baseband issue introduced with the 4.2.1 update for iPhone 4, but I also strongly believe there is some tower component to this problem (ie, software revision at the tower or configuration).
Like others here, I also performed a restore to 4.2.1 through iTunes and setup my phone as "New" and I continue to see the behavior. The phone is unusable in my house unless I manually disable 3G. As a final data point, when I'm able to maintain a 3G connection long enough in my house I get the following throughput from Speedtest.net: 1863 Kbps down / 543 Kbps up.

  • My Creative Cloud needs an update, but says there is no internet connection, and disconnects shortly after. What can I do?

I wanted to install my creative cloud in order to access indesign. Although when I click download, it tells me to update the programme. So I do. And then it starts loading, but ends shortly after, telling me to check my internetconnection. The connection is absolutely fine, no problem, but it just won't install the update. This means that I can't use the creative cloud AT ALL, because none of the programmes I could be using will work due to the missing update. SIGH!!

ive already tried making it new but it still looses connection, while im next to the router it works just fine but if i go to a room away from the router it doesnt work.

    Try Resetting your Network Settings.
I had this issue on my 4S right after updating to iOS7.  Weak WIFI Range.
Resetting the Network Settings brought it back to normal.

  • Time Machine backups slow down TC internet connection

I'm having a problem with my TC internet connection slowing down dramatically. When I connect my DSL modem directly to my Mini, it's fine. When I connect it to the TC there are big slow downs off and on. I'm wondering if the backups done by TM slow down the internet connection and the network as a whole.

Over ethernet no, it would have almost no effect.. over wireless yes.. it can have a big effect.
How big are the backups generally? These should only be incremental and relatively small.
Measure your actual speed of copying a file to the TC.. if you can put numbers to it, that will help. Use the Activity Monitor and see what is the average speed copying a file or when TM is backing up.
Any improvements to the wireless speed will reduce the time the backup runs and how much time your internet is slow. Wireless is highly range and signal dependent. You might find a network rearrangement where you use the TC close to the Mini can solve the issue.. especially if you can connect to it by ethernet.. and then wireless bridge if you need to.

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works

  • Very Slow Internet Connection and Backups

I have had a Time Capsule for some time now (1st generation) and it has caused nothing but headaches. I have put up with it for some time but I have a very slow internet connection and cannot leave Time Machine on or it bogs down my machine, so I only backup periodically. Specifics are provided below.
I have a poor internet connection to begin with. When plugged in directly either to my modem or through Ethernet to the Time Capsule, I get download speeds of ~ 2.9 Mbits/sec download, 0.7 Mbits/sec upload. When connected over wireless, the speeds drop to about 0.6 Mbits/sec download, 0.6 Mbits/sec upload. I feel like I am working on dial-up. I have both a Mac and a PC, and speeds are the same on both, so it does not appear to be a computer issue. I have played with various settings in the Airport, including how connected (b-n or n only), DHCP settings, etc, but nothing makes a difference. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussion area, bigbrianb!
Have you downloaded a utility like iStumbler to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your wireless network?
iStumbler will display most of the other wireless networks around you, so you'll have an idea of the competition for unused channels. Ideally, you want your network to be on a channel that is at least 4-5 channels away from any other network to minimize the chances of wireless interference. Is that the case there?
Your signal strength should be 50% or greater and noise less than 10% for a good quality connection on your network. Is that the case there?
There are more things to test, but this will get things going.

  • Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber

Time Capsule drops wifi/internet connection and flashes amber.  I've tried unplugging it and my modem but it continues to do this every so often.  The time capsule is out in the open, so I don't think it's a heat issue.  It's running firmware 7.7.3.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  It's driving me crazy!

Bought the time capsule in Oct 2013.  I have a Sagemcom 2864 modem from Bell but used through Teksavvy.  The 5 ghz has been flaky until I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 I think.  I had a closer look at it and it appears that the wifi is ok.  I was thrown off by the wifi symbol being all animated in the menu bar.  I was able to ping the time capsule via wifi.  All the status lights on the modem looked ok.  Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get some more details.  Do you know if there's anyway to get some logs from the airport utility?

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • You can't use The following message is stopping me access my disk utility.  'this version of the application "Disk Utility" with this version of OS X.'  not only that my Mac pro keeps dropping my internet connection and logs on to BT Open.

After installing Yosmite, The following message is stopping me accessing my disk utility.  'You can't use this version of the application “Disk Utility” with this version of OS X.' you have “Disk Utility” 12.1.1.
not only that my Mac pro keeps dropping my internet connection and logs on to BT Open.
    Help

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

  • Everytime I turn on Outlook, it kills my internet connection and I have to reboot the router

As the title says, each time I turn on Outlook with Office 365, it kills my internet connection and I have to reboot the router. I can still login to the router admin and do a soft reboot. This kills the internet for all the computers on my network as well.
The weird exception to this is when I'm connected to my work VPN, then everything is fine.  Also, should be noted, it never did this at first...then started doing it randomly and stopped after a while...now a few months later, it started doing it agian.
Is there some sort of weird port forwarding I should be using?
I'm running through an Exchange server.
    Windows 7 Pro
    Router is a D-Link 857 - HD Media Router 3000..running latest firmware.
Everything is setup standard. No firewalls except the standard Windows firewall and the router is a really basic config.
Please any insight would be great!

    Hello AyaTheBookWorm,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I can definitely understand how this is frustrating, I would feel the same way.  To troubleshoot this issue please see the steps below, as well as checking out the Wireless Diagnostics.
Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly
Your Mac may not not stay connected to your Wi-Fi network reliably.
Your Mac may stop accessing the Internet during use.
    Solution
Use these steps if your computer disconnects from its Wi-Fi network unexpectedly.
Check your range to the Wi-Fi router and reduce the effect of interference.
If your computer is too far from your Wi-Fi router or your environment has too much Wi-Fi interference, then your computer may not detect the Wi-Fi network properly. The easiest way to check for range limits with your Wi-Fi network is to move your computer or your Wi-Fi router closer together and make sure that there are no obstructions (such as walls, cabinets, and so forth) between the router and your computer.
See Potential sources of wireless interference for more information about interference and solutions.
Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. If your computer works fine when connected to a different Wi-Fi network, then the issue may be related to your network router or ISP. In that case, contact the manufacturer of your router or your ISP.

  • New iMac Cant Hold Internet Connection (and finds a lot of networks....)

    Hello,
I have one of the new 20" iMacs released 8/7. My problem is that my iMac cant hold an internet connection and it finds a lot of possible networks to which it can connect.
I am certain the issue lies with the iMac because my old Powerbook G4 has no problems connecting to the internet and it is sitting literally next to the iMac. Furthermore, I actually had purchased an iMac about a week ago and that one had no problems connecting to the internet either. (I returned that one when the new iMacs were released.) So that means 2 Macs had no problems connecting to the internet from the same location yet this new iMac does.
One thing I have noticed about this new iMac is that it detects many more networks than my Powerbook or the iMac from last week. I live in Manhattan so there are networks everywhere. Sometimes the iMac will give me 15 or so different networks to connect to and seconds later the choices drop to 5 or so. When I try to connect to the network I want (my network) the connection doesnt hold and it frequently drops. It takes me forever to download anything. I have to write this post on my Powerbook. My Powerbook only detects 2 or 3 possible networks to connect.
I rebooted, etc. and that did not work. I shut the Powerbook down so that it would not "compete" with the iMac and that did not work either.
    Any suggestions/ideas?

    Hello Wireless groupies:
I have had wireless problems with my laptop and my power mac this week, but all is well for me now.
The grass roots issues of wireless communication in terms of physics are related to amplitude and frequency. The amplitude is controlled (signal strength) by the power setting of the router and the portable device. The amount of power in the signal is measured in watts per square meter and is controlled by the broadcasting units settings.
The frequency at which the router broadcasts is changed by channels available in both units. I believe the portable units scan each channel for base station transmissions just like the radio in your car/lorry . The frequencies associated with each channel on the base transmitter can be assigned by the user for the best reception in the local broadcast area, most likely your home. The area which you operate has many different interference parameters which degrade signal strength just as in your portable radio reception. In the base station world it is based upon digital transmission encrypted (D to A) into an analog signal then decrypted at the laptop from analog to digital signal.(A to D). Experimentation is probably the only method to determine which is the best frequency to operate between your devices.
It should be noted that the new Imac's have an extended frequency range because they use a 'N' class wifi set of components. The N class wifi allows for higher frequencies and extended ranges. A base station which is a G class wifi can only broadcast in the lower frequency range and hence the availability of the higher frequencies of the new Imac are irrelevant because the Imac must receive only what is is transmitted in the 'G' range, 'N' class reception and hence the benefits of higher frequencies are not available. The only solution is to have 'N' class devices through out the network, otherwise everything reverts to the 'G' class range of lower frequencies. The solution to extend the frequency range of the network is to upgrade ethernet cards and base stations, so that 'N' class frequency transmission can be utilized.
The network will work with 'G' and 'N' devices but the network is only as good as the lower class device of transmission and reception.
I would start by getting an extreme network airport base station and then experimenting with different channels at a midpoint power transmission. The best frequency would be one which delivers the most power at a set power transmission level (signal strength). The higher the frequency the greater the penetration through walls, beams, people, dogs, cats, pipes, tabletops....:). I would then experiment with the power levels for the range which you want to cover, most likely just your home and not your entire neighborhood.
In my house I use channel 6 and power level 5 from a 2wire gateway/router, which is in the G extreme class range. I have always used channel 6 but I have tried power levels 3, 4 and 5. The biggest interference variable being weather and cordless phones. The cordless phones operate in the 2.4 GHZ range and the 900 MHZ range. The phone directly above my router is a 900MHZ phone and it never interferes with the 2.4 GHZ wifi network. I think the worst phone to have with a G class network are the 5.4GHZ phones because they actually use some of the same wireless bandwidth. A 'N' class network would probably be a better choice if you want to use a 5.4GHZ phone system.
    good luck

Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

That's what I would have thought, but even after saving the setting, as soon as I shut down my computer or log out of Mail, it automatically defaults back to 25. It's a bit frustrating.
Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of those horrible pop-up banners but still have my glass sound and number of emails in the red dot when I get an email...
These little tweaks are the only thing I HATE about upgrading my OS.

  • WRTU54G-TM router loses internet connection and needs to be restarted to regain connection.

We recently switched from a WRT54G to a WRTU54G-TM router from T-mobile and the new router seems to randomly lose our internet connection and needs to be restarted to regain it. It could be coincidence but this has happened a couple of times immediately after using our VoIP phone connected to it. I tried switching back to the old router and everything worked fine once again. Typically with the WRTU54G-TM it will stay connected for about a day or so and then it will need to be restarted. Although sometimes it will need to be restarted multiple times in one day. Just curious if anyone had any quick suggestions or setting configurations that I may have missed?
    Thanks for your input.
    Rylynn

I just added the T-Mobile@Home service and set up a WRTU54G-TM this past Saturday. During the first 4 days, the blue light on the router went out and I lost phone service - until rebooting the router each time. Phone service returned about a minute after rebooting in each case.
I did NOT lose Internet service while phone service was down.
I reached T-Mobile customer care the second time, and the rep I spoke with mentioned that she had a couple of other calls similar to mine earlier in the day. So far, the reps had no official word regarding this problem, and the word going around was simply to tell people to reboot their routers.
Tech Support had about a 20 minute hold queue, so I didn't yet to speak with a technician.
The phone service has been up for the past 2 days -- curious to see how long it holds up this time. Also checking the Linksys site regularly to see if new firmware (beyond the 1.00.04 I have loaded) becomes available - maybe that will address the problem.
When I complained to customer care, the one thing they did was to extend my "buyer's remorse period" to 30 days (instead of the usual 14). So I plan to hang on for another couple of weeks to see if this gets straightened out. I love the service, sound quality and price. Hoping it works out - I want to keep this!
