Sluggish Aperture due to presets? Resetting all preset helped me!

I've been having huge troubles with Aperture 3, like many others in this forum. Simply exporting a single image to a 1024x1024 jpg would literally require 8 minutes, and during that time the spinning beachball would prevent me from doing anything else. I tried everything: ditching the preferences, empty caches, even reinstalled the app. Nothing seemed to help.
However, I noticed that after resetting the presets to their factory defaults (adjustments > pull down Presets > Edit presets... > bottom settings wheel > Reset all to factory defaults) all images that were untouched by presets exported blazing fast. Even if I made adjustments (e.g. exposure correction) the image exported in seconds. As soon as I applied the auto-enhance preset, my problem was back.
My preliminary conclusion: there's something fishy with the presets. Maybe it's just the auto-enhancement, maybe it's bigger. I'll continue testing, but if you find anything that confirms, contradicts or refines this conclusion, please share it!

I have a warning that my boot drive is out of free space. (?) The finder is showing only 1GB of free space and I had to create that space by deleting my downloads folder.
I installed DaisyDisk and it is telling me that there is a folder (Macintosh HD/private) that is 170GB!
Macintosh HD/private/var/log/kernel.log.2 - is 102 GB
Macintosh HD/Private/var/log/asl - there are loads of files in here all 25 MB in size with much the same name (2011.04.02.U0.G80.172812781.asl)
First launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain your problem.
1. So - can I delete these files?
You can, but because those are system files, it might be easier to use commands in a Terminal session. See below.
2. If yes - how to I get to them in the finder - the only way I can see them is with this program called DaisyDisk. (IE - how to do you view hidden folders)
Launch Terminal, then type these commands:
cd /private/var/log
sudo rm -i kernel.log.2
You'll be prompted for your administrative password. The "-i" flag on that latter command tells it to inquire whether you really want to delete the file. Triple-check that it's the right one, then press the letter "i" and the <return> key.
3. How did this happen? How do I make sure this doesn't happen again?
The Console utility might have shown you messages that explained what was going on. If you see messages that might explain things but you don't understand them, post them in a reply to this thread.

  • Aperture 3 adjustments presets help!!!!!

    HELP.....
i  was using my aperture 3, and i always use the ready to use "adjustemnts presets" under the presets pop-up menu that come with program. However i somehow pressed delete and now there all gone ... which include the color preset, the white and balence preset, and the black adn white preset...i even tryed uninstalling it and still are not there ....
please help i have tryed everything

    Quit Aperture.
Go to your Home folder > Library > Application Support > Aperture, and drag the Adjustment Chain Presets.plist to your desktop.
    Restart Aperture.
I believe you should have the presets back, the ones that ship with Aperture.
If you have 3rd party presets installed, not sure what it will do to them.
    Hope that helps.

  • Aperture is reseting all my curves! HELP!

I'm not sure what is happening, but this is a major crisis!!! For some reason starting today, aperture is reseting all my curves adjustments! What would happen is, when I click on a picture to view it the curve would should momentarily for half a second (I could even be able to see the actual curve on the left) and then after that aperture would reset it. It doesn't reset it to the default state, what it would do is set the left and right slider to match the lowest blacks and highest white. Please help me, how do I stop this? I don't want to retouch my entire photo library!

Thanks for your feedback, I'll try to answer all those questions:
I'm using latest version of OSX.
I'm using latest version of Aperture.
I applied the curves adjustments by using the curves brick. Sometimes I use effects/presets that put in their own curves.
I use the niksoftware plugins sometimes, but it basically creates a new file so it doesn't really have anything to do with the curves.
I have no upgraded aperture recently, or installed anything. However two things I did in the past few days:
    1) Aperture crashed randomly at one time. I just relaunched it and it seems to run just fine so I just continued.
    2) Aperture imported some photos from my camera and it says "Raw format not recognized" so what I did was rebuilt my database (by holding option+alt when launching). Afterwards the unrecognized images are shown.
My entire library is managed, no references. I only shoot RAW.
I have a time machine backup but no vaults. I'm going to roll back to a time machine version 3-4 days ago and see if the curves is still a problem. I will report back.

  • Convert Adobe Lightroom Preset into Aperture 3 Adjustment Preset

    Hi all,
Just a quick question... I was a Adobe Lightroom user and recently purchased and switched to Aperture 3 and I love it, however I have a bunch good presets in Lightroom and I would like to convert them into Aperture 3 Adjustment Presets so I can continue on using them. Is there any way of doing it in a simple way (like converting a preset file from one to the other so I can import it into Aperture 3)? Thanks for any help, suggestions etc. in this matter!

There is no real automated way but it should be easy enough to do. Just take a look at what the preset does in lightroom in terms of what adjustments it uses and what settings are used. Do exactly the same thing to an image in Aperture, then save as a preset.
I really never understood why people buy "presets" - the adjustment controls are simple and limited compared to what you can do with say a plug-in or even a photoshop action. Replicating the results visually with having no idea what the preset actually did is easy enough - seeing the adjustment blocks it adds and the parameters it is using makes it a no-brainer.

  • Is their a way to reset ALL default settings in PS CS6?

My 3D camera view is acting kooky when I go into 3D mode. It's like I'm underneath the text looking up at it, and no matter what settings I mess with I can not get the view that I want. Yes I have went to all the little drop down window and clicked on default view and I still get this same underneath view. It is really holding me up, I am intermidiate user so I' a little frustrated, can anyone help?Is their a way to reset ALL default settings in PS Cs6

There is Reset all tools and reset preferences.  To reset you Photoshop Preferences as you start Photoshop hold down Ctrt|CMD+Alt|OPT+Shift you should get a prompt about you preferences.  Somewhere in tools preset there are reset tool options.

  • "Reset All" not working on all selected images

I had to reinstall Windows this week, and thus also Lightroom.
Now when I select a group of images and in the develop module, take an action, such as applying a preset, resetting all, or clearing history, it only performs the action on a single active image, not on all the rest of the selected images.  How can I correct this?

I don't quit understand what you are doing as "Clear History" is NOT under the sync settings dialog.  You can just select multiple photos and use develop/clear history on the menu and it will ask if you what to apply to "selected photos" or "active photo".    When using Auto-Sync, be careful to turn it back off when you are done needing it because it can REALLY REALLY cause accidental photo edits.  This is from painful personal experience.

  • HELP - Need to be able to RESET ALL CALENDARS to "FLOATING" - How To ???

These two quotes are from the Apple Forums - they never received an Answer - my problem is IDENTICAL to these gentlemen:
    "Hi all,
I'm just a guy who recently migrated from Palm Desktop and who doesn't like to be in Madrid, for example, only to see his Chicago appointments listed seven hours ahead. I've been managing time zones in my head my whole life and don't really need or want iCal to "help" me out with it.
That said, does anyone know of a script available or other method that will allow one to change all events in iCal to "floating"? I would prefer to not have to do this one event at a time.
Thanks much for your thoughts and insight.

I'm glad this topic is here, and sad that it hasn't generated any useful replies in almost 20 days! I really had to dig before I found this unanswered question!
I've posted my own - somewhat comparable - problem and possibly someone will notice and answer. My question, posted Sept 9, is entitled "Can I disable 'time zone' actions done by iCal?"
Back to me, Real Time, August 5th, 2007:
Does ANYONE have a solution for this? How to GLOABLLY set ALL EVENTS (or at least all events in a given Calendar) to FLOATING, including RETROACTIVELY all the way back to the very beginning of a Calendar (or even all of iCal) ???
    Perhaps an Automator Script???
    Help Please!!!
    Running:
    iCal 2.0.5, Powerbook G4, OS X 10.4.9
    Thanks!

Turning off Time Zones does not even remotely address the problem. All that does is solve the issue of not continuing to repeat the problem in the future. But at this moment I have literally HUNDREDS (perhaps thousands) of past event entries that need to be accessed for legal reasons, and the date / time is Critically Important..... and all the dates and times are fubar due to this time zone issue. Only resetting the events (PAST) to "Floating" resolves the problem, but how to do this with hundreds (1000's) of Past Events Entries?
i.e. How to Globally RESET all events to "Floating"?

  • My iphone 4s has been reporting invalid sim/sim card failure intermittently for a week. tried to solve problem permanently - in mid of reset all settings my sim card failed again. help! not backed up on icloud, just itunes.  don't ask. thanks!

my iphone 4s has been reporting invalid sim/sim card failure intermittently for a week. I thought it was a one/two-time thing, so had to manually eject SIM card and put back in.  Today, after it happened twice in 12 hours, someone told me to reset - i thought they meant reset all settings, not network settings.  while in the middle of resetting, there was an invalid SIM card again.  so a few questions - which should i do first?  try to manually back up from itunes (not connected to cloud - will be after tonight!), or eject SIM card?  don't know if one will jeopardize the other.  also, the last time i backed up was 6 days ago - have taken hundreds of pics since then - are those all lost?  is there a way to essentially not reset?  i thought the reset was okay because it said i'd lose no data or media. Help!  thanks much!

I have an itouch that will not let me sign in to my itunes account. The email address that it is associated with is no longer valid. I keep entering the correct password but it says that it is incorrect. I can’t get a reset all of my credentials don’t work. Now all my apps won’t work. it looks like they load for half a second then disappear. What can I do?

    - Try contacting iTunes for the password problem:
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us
    - For the other problem you can try a reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The next standard thing to do is to download/install a new app but you cant 'do that.
    - Instead, try restoring from backup.

If Join was on then your home wi-fi must be set to Non-Broadcast.  If you did not set this up (maybe your provider did) then you will need to find the Network Name they used, and any password they used.  The SSID is Security Set ID and to see more try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSID .  Basically it is the name used to identify your router/network.  A lot of times the installer will leave it set as LinkSys, or Broadcom or whatever the manufacturer set it as for default.  Your best bet is to get whoever installed it to walk you through how they set it up, giving you id's and passwords so you can get in.  HOWEVER, if you are not comfortable with this (if you set security wrong, etc.) you would be well ahead of the game to hire a local computer tech (networking) to get this working for you.  You can also contact the vendor of your router and get help (if it is still in warranty), or at least get copies of the manuals as pdf files.  Sorry I can't give you more help, I hope this gives you an idea where to go from here to find more.

However, i held both the home and off button because i didn't want to do the reset anymore because i was stuck at one place for a long time. the reset with the home did happen, but the resetting all setting is still happening and progress bar hasn't move. Im not sure if its stuck or if its just taking a while.

just make the system setting like form factory.
Can't have it both ways.  "Refreshing" w/o deleting programs and restoring to factory level are 2 different things.  Also, it depends on which OS system you have.  You did not mention this in any of your postings nor have you included your system info.
You have to decide which do you actually want to do?
Archive & Install (if your OS allows)
Erase the HD (restore to factory level)
