Smart Object Thumbnail Not Launching Illustrator

Hi guys,
I've noticed what seems like a bug on my PC when using CreativeCloud. When I double click on the Smart Object Thumbnail inside of Photoshop instead of it launching Illustrator (the place the smart object was created), Photoshop brings up a window titled 'Import PDF'. The process I do works perfectly on my Macbook but on my PC it seems to present this error.
My Process is: Open Illustrator > Creative Vector > Copy Vector > Paste Into Photoshop > Paste as Smart Object > Find Layer > Double Click Smart Object Thumbnail.... After this step it usually launches Illustrator but it currently opens the 'Import PDF' UI, which then opens the file inside Photoshop as a rasterised file.
Do any of you have a fix for it?
Thanks,
Warren

You are an absoloute legend! My system was associating ai files with Photoshop as default. So I just right clicked on the ai file and selected 'Always Open with this Program'.
That was such a weird issue, I've never seen before (New Windows User). So I thank you for giving me a push in the right direction.

  • Smart Object Not Launching Illustrator

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to get a smart object to open in Illustrator from Photoshop.
This is the process I've taken:
Open illustrator > New File > Create Vector Shape > Copy
Open Photoshop > New File > Paste Copied Vector Shape as Smart Object > Locate Smart Object on Photoshop Layer > Double Click
The double click usually opens that smart object in Illustrator(the place it was created) but instead it's opening a 'Import PDF' window instead.
Any ideas on how to fix this? The process works fine on my MAC but on my PC it shows the Import PDF window.
    Thanks,
    Warren

    Hello, thanks for the reply.
The Mac Version of Illustrator hasn't been updated since the new update however the PC version is up to date with all the most recent features. I tried to remove any preferences etc and even did a fresh install of both PS and Illustrator but it's made no difference. I'm still getting the same issue.
    Best,

  • Could not edit original smart object because the application which created the smart object could not be launched

could not edit original smart object because the application which created the smart object could not be launched

    Hi there,
I got this problem when I installed Adob master collection Over CS 5.
I had children book story storis which created in Adobe illustrator CS 5 and I created art boards in Adobe photoshop cs 5.
After installting CS 6 i tried to edit the smart objects and it was not opeinging the smart object file in Illustrator.
    I did some tests.
    1) Right click on smart object layer and click export contents. Save on desktopp or anywhere you want. (I saved on desktop)
    2) I had this file on my desktop (Vector Smart Object10.ai) but it didn't show any icon, which program should open this type of file.
    3) Double click on the file and it pop up a extension window 'Click on change and select adobe illustrator' and press OK.
    4) Go back to your photoshop file and right click on smart object layer and click dit content. now this time it opens up assets in illustrator.
    ENJOY!
    Thanks

  • Is there a way to edit text in a smart object brought in from illustrator?

Is there a way to edit text in a smart object brought in from illustrator? Many thanks for the help!
And can anyone recommend learning resources for someone (me) who is an AI user for a decade who needs to work in PS for web mockups? Something other than a basic PS tutorial. Something geared towards that specific task. I'm not a PS beginner - but have mostly used it for photo correction until now.
Truly -- thanks! BTW - I'm in the CS 6 Suite and CC will not be available to me.

OMG! When I went back into the ai file and made sure that the text was on it's own layer (which I had not originally done) I could indeed edit the text in the file when exported to ps! This is a perfect solution for this situation. As far as the person I'm working with  - who fears ai more than anything - I can work in ai - which in many ways is so much less cumbersome than ps - and just export - clicking "preserve" layers & text editing! I hope this helps someone else! Sisham - many thanks for your help!

  • Smart object thumbnails in CC ...

The thumbnails of smart objects are not updated instantly after editing the content of it. For updated thumbnail, you have to turn off the visibility of the layer of smart object.

Thanks. Here's a link to the video of me transforming in CS5:
    http://www.notchill.com/tmp/CS5_SmartObject_Transform.mov
Please note: The smart object I imported was already scaled down from the original size, but the transform controls show it as 100%.
In contrast, here is a screen cap of me doing the exact same process in CS4:
    http://www.notchill.com/tmp/CS4_SmartObject_Transform.mov
As you can see, once I get into transform mode, it shows that the smart object has been scaled from its original. This data is very valuable.
Hope this helps to clarify. Please note this applies to rotation as well.

  • Vector Smart Object does not STAY vector.

When I save my photoshop file as an .eps, I can have all the text from the Photoshop file remain vector, but a Vector Smart Object does not remain vector. Is there a way to have it remain vector?

While that is true, there are great limitations to the current scenario. I came up using quark for layout and while it is a great typesetting program and has tried really hard to improve its functionality in terms of color management, type effects, pdf export, alpha transparency, etc., it certainly cannot do what what photoshop can in these areas. I made the switch to InDesign several years ago but hated the learning curve with it. I already knew quark and found myself struggling to use InDesign like quark. Now I am back to the old Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator paradigm. Illustrator is another great program that i am fluent in and use daily, but it is easier to do a lot of things in photoshop in terms of image manipulation, etc. So then you are back to the Photoshop plus 1 scenario, only now using Illustrator as your layout program. (quark is still better than this)
The thing that I hate the most is always having to decide which program best suits each design and also trying to explain my reasoning with others that work with me. For example, If i were doing an image-heavy design with some type that required drop shadows or any other raster effect, i would save a layered tif as my working file (the compression saves space) and an eps for placement in the layout program (to retain the vector type) but heaven forbid i also want to use a vector logo in that design. Now i have my editable tif, my vector/raster eps and my logo. Oh wait, the client wants to move everything around 10 times? OK now i am opening, saving, nudging, opening, saving etc.
so in essence, show me a layout program that is image saavy as photoshop or an image manippulator that is as vector and type saavy as quark or indesign. Is that really so much to ask? We have paid over and over again for minor versions of all of these programs. I think i photoshop is the front-runner in terms of meeting my needs, at least for single page documents. i love smart objects (vector and raster) double clicking to edit and never having to worry about where one is saved or what color format its in is sweet!! i would just like photoshop to parse reasonably complex vectors and output them.
It parses complex type just fine, even with drop shadows! OK rant over. Nap time.

  • Smart object will not open in CS4

I have Lightrooom 4.2 and Photoso CS4. When I try to open a RAW file as a smart object in CS4, Photoshop opens but the image does not appear. There is no error message. Any ideas on how to get the image to open?

Your application versions aren't in sync, so this just won't work I'm afraid: CS4 is (roughly) four years behind LR4 and the version of ACR that comes with PS CS4 (5.x - should be on 5.7) won't be able to interpret the edits you've carried out in LR4, assuming you're using the latest process version with the new slider controls.
Very surprised you're not getting any error messages or warnings though. Maybe you switched them off in Lightroom?

  • Smart Object Effects Not Shown in 'Play Slide' But Shown in Other 'Play' Modes?

    Hi,
In Captivate 7, effects which I add to smart objects using 'Add Effect' in the Effects tab do not show when I 'Play Slide' but do show in any other 'Play' mode e.g. 'Play Project'.  Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Richard

F3 Play Slide is only going to show you what you can see in Edit mode.  It only moves the frame cursor across the timeline but does not publish the project to an output.
You can see a Live Preview of the effect applied to a given object by opening the Effects tab (Window > Effect), selecting the object on the slide, and then clicking Live Preview button.
But the best way to see how everything works is to either hit Cntrl + ENTER to publish and preview the project, or else hit F10 to publish to browser.

  • Smart object does not appear at specified time in slide.

Here's my issue:  When I insert a speech bubble into the slide, set it to appear after 5.0 seconds and the display for the rest of the slide, it does not appear at the specified time. HOWEVER, if I move the speech bubble to appear at the very START of the slide, then it appears. I thought perhaps I needed to add an effect to make it work, so I selected the thought bubble, then added a "fly in" effect and set the time. It still won't appear at a specified time--only if I put it at the start of the slide.
Here's my question: Why won't the smart object (speech bubble) appear at a specified time, but it WILL appear if I set the "appear after" time to 0 seconds? I also have tried moving this on the timeline, and it still only shows at the start of the slide.
    Many thanks for any help.

Previewed in browser and in normal preview mode. (Just clicking "preview from this slide).
    Normal project -- not responsive.
And..I'm not worried. No need for wine. (Although I've never been known to refuse one if someone offers. )
Screenshots below. As you can see, the image is not set sa a button.
And, yes: I know there is a spelling error in the thought bubble. Just trying to get it to work first.
I think there may be a bug in the system, as I have noticed other weird things. (EG: The time indicators under "timeline" often disappear for no reason. I have to close out and re-lauch Captivate to get it back. (Clicking on "timeline" in Windows dropdown does nothing to correct the issue. Other things I've noticed is that the navigation works fine when I play the whole project through ONCE, but upon a second preview, all settings -- such as "jump to slide __" -- do not stick. When I go back in and re-enter all of the navigation slide commands, the same thing happens when I replay it. My client notices the same thing. Bizarre.)

  • Challenge: Export Smart Object Vector Data to Illustrator

I doubt there's any sane way to do this, but I thought I'd throw it out as a challenge:
We have a photoshop file that is built with many (and I mean many) illustrator vector items that were placed into photoshop as smart objects (and scaled and rotated).
Unfortunately the file is for packaging, and we now need the vector objects back in illustrator for printing.
Is there any way to export the paths with their current position, scale and rotation back to ai?
I think we're going to end up doing it by hand...
    Thanks!
    Niles
CS2 or 3 and as many g5's and intels as needed.

Save out a PSD and open it in Illustrator. Tell Illustrator to retain Photoshops layers. You now have the ability to move the vector art around on a layer in Illustrator. If you need to edit text and objects, you need to manually replace the nested object with the original Illustrator art. Spot colors will also transfer to some extent as layered spots.
PSD is becoming Adobe's interchange format. PDF is trying to have some behaviors of PSD so go and play with them to see what works.

  • Smart Object import from Illustrator to Photoshop ( CS5 )

    Hello !
    Here's the thing:
I have an icon in Illustrator and I'm designing a website in Photoshop so I copy and paste that icon as a Smart Object in Photoshop and everything is perfect but when I resize that Smart Object is not perfect anymore.
    *The document is 200 %
-The first icon is the original file I import from Illustrator and It's 100%
-I resize the second icon to 70%
Now look at those gray light lines around the second icon. Why is that happening ? How can I fix it ?
    Thanks !
PS: Sorry for my English I just speak a little bit.

    Hi, again, Sunniess.
Now look at those gray light lines around the second icon. Why is that happening ? How can I fix it ?
You may be sorry you asked. I didn't have time to bore you with the answer to that earlier.
The gray lines are being generated in Ps, so this should be of interest to anyone who works with small images in Ps.
When you export from Illy using the clipboard, Illy rounds to the nearest whole pixel. A rounded rectangle is created in Illy  measuring 73x30 pixels.   If you scale the rectangle 70% in Illy, the new rectangle measures 51.1 x 21 pixels. But it pastes into Ps as 51x21 pixels.
If you import the 73x30 pixel image into Ps and scale 70% , instead of 51x21 pixels, you will get either 52x21, 53x21, 52x23 or 53x23 pixels, depending on where the Reference point locator (highlighted below) is set in the Transform Toolbar. The gray lines are the extra pixels.
Why the extra pixels? The extra pixels are a form of dithering. When you scale the  73x30 imported image 70% in Ps,  you get 51.1 x 21 pixels, same as in Illy. But Ps doesn't round to the nearest pixel. It creates fractional pixels. In the screenshot below,  the rectangle is rendered 52x21. The lines at top and bottom are sharp because the pixel height is a whole integer, 21. But the width is 51.1. There's a decimal fraction. The gray vertical bar at right is how Ps represents fractional pixels. The .1 of 51.1. Ps can't actually make .1 of a  pixel black. So instead it makes 1 pixel .1 black by assigning 10% opacity.
If the Reference point locater is set as below, you get a different result. Now the rectangle renders at 53x23 pixels. You now have gray rows of pixels at top and bottom, as well as both sides. The height is still really 21 pixels, but since it is transforming from the center and it's an odd number, Ps splits a pixel, assigning .5 black pixels at the top, and .5 black pixels at the bottom, which it represents with 2 rows of pixels at 50% opacity. Similar thing with the ends, except they are lower opacity because they represent smaller fractions of a pixel. This pretty much reproduces what your icon looks like.
Below is a closeup of the above rectangle over a blue background. The  rows of pixels aren't actually gray. They are semi transparent black.
The point is, how the Reference point locator is set can have unexpected influence on the results, particularly when downsizing small images. And will be most noticable on straight vertical or horizontal edges.
As if that weren't enough, there are options in your General Preferences that affect the results of resizing images.
I copied and pasted your icon into Ps, then scaled it 70% at two different settings.
The top is Bicubic, the botttom is Nearest Neighbor.
A significant difference. And this interacts with the Transform Locator setting to further confuse the issue. But if you resize in Illy you avoid all this.
If you resize in Ps, it's good to be aware of this stuff. This all happens in Ps. It really has nothing to do with Illy. If you must scale in Ps and get noticable rows of fractional pixels, it's easy enough to select the rows and just delete them. Or fill them. That's essentially what Illy does when it copies to the clipboard.
Your English is fine. I hope mine makes as much sense.
    Peace,
    Lee

  • Change colour of an illustrator smart object in Photoshop

Hello, very basic but somehow has me stumped, how do I change the colour of a smart object which is in vectorised form from illustrator dropped into photoshop.
The object is all grey I'd like to change it to all black. Thanks

In photoshop, double click on the vector smart object thumbnail
in the layers panel, which will open the object back in illustrator.
Make your color change in illustrator and then File>Save.
Go back to photshop and the object should be updated with your new color.

  • Trying to paste from Illustrator as smart object

Is there a trick to pasting a pixel-perfect vector image from Illustrator into Photoshop as a smart object, and not introduce a bunch of anti-aliasing that was not in the original file? My images are perfectly aligned with the pixel grid in Illustrator, and the pixel preview shows them correctly.
This page is helpful for dealing with vector shape layers, but the techniques he talks about don't work for smart objects. Strangely, he says he doesn't have a problem with smart objects, but I do.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about: a simple 13x13 pixel image in Illustrator turns to crap in Photoshop when pasted as a smart object (I know an image as simple as this could be pasted as a shape layer, but the real images I'm working with are much more complex, and cannot be pasted as simple shape layers).
    I'm using Photoshop CS4.

Good news, everyone! With the release of Photoshop CC 2014, this is STILL broken.
Starting with an Illustrator document that is 50x50 px:
    Then create a 50x50 square, at x=0 and y=0:
Create a 30x30 square over top of that, inset it (x=10 and y=10):
Use Pathfinder to punch out the front:
Paste that into Photoshop as a smart object. 100%x100%, at exactly x=0 and y=0.
    Expected behavior:
The first ten rows and the first ten columns of pixels should have a solid color.  The pixels in the 11th row or column should be 100% transparent, right? We punched a hole with precise coordinates, and have the Photoshop document matching the document size as well as accommodate exactly 100% of the object.
    But instead, we get this:
Zooming in further, you can see the 11th pixel, whether looking at the rows or columns, has a slight bleed of the color and opaqueness from the pixel immediately above/left:
It is approximately 6% of the strength of the adjacent pixel that it is inheriting from. Interestingly, the effect can compound where a pixel is receiving color from BOTH the left AND the top.  Also interesting: the effect does not occur in reverse.  That is, opaque pixels do not "inherit"  ~6% transparency from the top/left adjacent pixels:
So, my question to Chris, if he's still employed by Adobe, if this is intended behavior, how can I accomplish transparencies with solid lines that do not bleed?  Like.. what is the workaround (that doesn't involve flattening or touching up with masks)?

  • "Smart Objects" in Illustrator

So, I do a lot of resizing on multiple art boards. Each art board is a different size, but has the same content, and a lot of the time we just recycle old designs with new content.  I was wondering if there was an option to change multiple objects at once? Pretty much like a smart object in, but in illustrator.
i am also on Illustrator CC 2014 if that helps.

    Found this link:
Illustrator: Edit Multiple Text Boxes at Once (Requested) [HD Video] - BittBox
I will try the Place/Link option to see which one is more effective.
    Thanks!!

  • Can We Paste Photoshop Smart Objects Into Illustrator (as Linked/Embedded)?

Since raster editing is much more limited in Illustrator, is there a way to link or embed an individual Smart Object from Photoshop into Illustrator? I know there is an option to Place a file into Illustrator. But what if I have a larger Photoshop document with many Smart Objects in it, and just want to copy and paste one of those into Illustrator, but also have it update when I update it in Photoshop. Is this possible?

Copy and Paste won't have a link to the original file. Only Place can have that.
