Smb-sharing auto-mounted ntfs-3g hotplugged device

hi@all,
i have a smb-share for /media. i've got up to 2 partitions mounted there: one internal., mounted via fstab (/dev/sda2 /media/Transfer ntfs-3g locale=de_DE.utf8 0 0) and 1 that gets mounted automatically via udisk/gvfs (not really sure, the default gnome mounting routine^^). i can access sda2 without problems over a samba share, but when i try to open the external hdd, samba requests a user and a password, though it's the same share in the smb.conf. someone in the irc mentioned to put it into the fstab, either, but then the auto-mounting doesn't work anymore (and the external isn't connected everytime the pc boots up). anyone knows how to get this working?
btw, here's how the external hdd gets mounted:
/dev/sdc1 on /media/Extern type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions)
and the smb.conf:

SMB shared drive mounts, but I can see the folders

Hi,
I'm having issues seeing the shared folders in a SMB drive that mounts ok in my Mac. I use my active directory account with domain and password to authenticate, and after the drive successfully mounts, it just won't show anything in it, it seems to be empty but in the get info panel it shows 1.3 Tb.
Anyone can help me out. I really need to access the shared files.

I have worked it out.
I was mounting the wrong drive (700+ drives...) hence couldn't open its contents.
Now I'm a happy share drive user!

Auto-mounting USB storage devices doesn't work

Hi all,
I have some problems with the auto-mounting of USB storage devices. I already installed udisks and ntfs-3g.
When I connect the external device (it's an external hard disk WD My Passport 500GB, but I have the same problem with a SanDisk USB stick 8GB) the auto-mount doesn't work. I see a shorcut in the left panel of Thunar but if I try to use it Thunar crash without any message error.
I try with the manual mount and it works, but the left panel of Thunar continue to have the same problem.
In the italian Arch forum a friend suggest me to open Thunar from bash and close it. If I do it I receive this error log:

Are you using [testing]? Partially updated system?
The error looks like you have a different version of gcc-libs / glibc than the app was built against.

Stop Auto Mount of SMB Home Folder

For awhile, I tried SMB home folders for network users. This worked poorly, so i went back to using AFP.
However, for most users, their network home folder is now getting auto mounted by SMB at login.
I've checked WGM manager to make sure they have AFP homes and that no SMB home is assigned.
I've checked the users control panel to see if there is an automount setup there. Nothing.
Where else could auto mount information be stored and how can I find it to wipe it out?

Normally it would be a matter of changing the server to register the AFP share as an auto mount for user home directories, then you have to use Workgroup Manager to reconfigure each user to select the new share location which should now be listed in the Home tab in Workgroup Manager.
If you only do the first step the user account will still be set to the original settings.
Is this using Open Directory and a Mac file server? The process might be more complicated if your using Windows Active Directory, and typically a Windows server does not do AFP.

[Device Auto-mounting] HAL,KDE4.4 and default permissions

I have a small problem with default permissions of Automounted
Removable Devices. Whenever I mount it via KDE4.4's Auto-mounter. it
sets all files to be owned by root.

I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in
/etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got

$ cat /proc/mounts
/dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4

I like all my files and folders to be owner by me and NOT by root.

No auto mount of NTFS partititions

Hi All,
I'm a newbie Arch user, few weeks ago I successfully installed Arch x64 + KDE4 on my desktop (dual boot with Windows 7). Earlier all the NTFS partitions were auto mounted on boot but now after booting into the desktop, I get the following error in Dolphin when I try to access any NTFS partition:
An error occured while accessing 'Disk', the system responded: org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Not Authorized
Once I provide the admin password and manually mount the partitions, then I'm able to access the partitions.
Please advise on how can I make auto-mounting of NTFS partitions work.

Use fstab to mount internal stuff at boot. (and make sure to have ntfs-3g installed)

The files are formatted following the instructions. The partition Backup, however, does not come up ("no such file or directory", even when root).
Backup is ext4 and it's kept on an external hard drive, the same of Shared. Mounting it manually works. I have tried with simpler options (as simple as
Backup -fstype=auto :/dev/disk/by-uuid/f569bba5-8007-40f5-8b3c-36960c5796d5
with no results. Autofs won't do.
As an alternative I have tried xfce volume manager, but that doesn't work with ANY external device.

That would be a solution - if it worked. I tried that too. The Arch wiki just glances on the setup, solving the whole question with a one liner "Thunar-volman's automount doesn't work currently because of the hal to udev switch, Sept 2010"
The section on udev is obscure, mentioning to check policykit to "properly start your session".
However the policykit page is also obscure, containing no mention about starting X session properly or even improperly for what matters.
The default setting produces no result at all.
Nowhere I was able to find a five-lines working example of set up. I have used Linux daily since 2000 (and I know it should not take more than 5 line explanation to setup an auto-mount).
I am really embittered by this interpretation of "the arch way". The documentation on certain core tools such as policykit is completely insufficient and the defaults do not solve basic problems (hours to set up a basic auto-mount? incomplete wiki pages referring each other?).
Arch could be a perfect desktop distribution with just a pinch of attention to put the obvious features, when correctly disabled by default, at easy reach through complete examples. (Shutdown buttons? Same story: one line reference to policykit, dbus and other 10 tools with not the barest explanation about how to use them in synergy for the purpose. Result? Manual shutdown for the moment).
If you could provide a working setup for thunar volume manager I'll be happy to use and add it to the wiki.

External Hard Drive connected to AEBS does not auto mount

Just upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5. I have a AEBS running 5.3.2 airport utility with a LaCie HD connected to it.
In Tiger, my external hard drive would auto mount onto the desktop every time the computer turned on or woke up from sleeping etc.
In Leopard, my external drive will not auto mount. It does not show up in the sidebar under devices. It does not show up in the disk utility. To access it, I have to go the the finder sidebar, select my AEBS under shared, then select my HD. Also, I did check show connected servers and external disk on the desktop in the finder preferences. Also, not sure if this matters but the icon on my external drive on my desktop is the blue drive with three people holding hands and not the brighter blue one with the wireless signal logo.
In tiger my external HD basically acted like any other folder that was always there and not like a networked drive that I had to go and connect to. I want to go back to that. I heard this has to do with leopord no longer having the airdisk utility??

Try making an alias of one of the top-level folders in your external (AEBS-connected) drive, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your Login Items.
--> System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items
You can simply drag the folder alias into the Login Items window.
When you next log in, the folder will be automatically opened. Alas, it doesn't give you instant access to the entire external drive, but you can back out a level to see the entire drive. It isn't quite what you had with Tiger, but perhaps it will suffice.
If you leave the aliased folder on your desktop, you have a skinny approximation to the mounted volume that you had with Tiger.

Sharing a mounted disk image doesn't work

I'm trying to create a share point for a folder on an USB drive that is TrueCrypt encrypted with no success so far. TrueCrypt mounts the volume using a disk image - but that should not matter since the image is writeable.
The folder is located on a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted volume. When creating the share by dragging the folder into the File Sharing pane in the Server Preferences app, the folder seems to get the correct ACL permissions.
In the Finder Info, the volume does not have "Ignore ownership on this volume" checked.
This is the folder that does not appear in the AFP listing, although "Share this item using AFP" is selected in Server Admin.

The strange thing is that the share appears in the directory listing when connecting via FTP as it's supposed to and the permissions seem to be fine (read/write ok). It also appears in the SMB share listing and can be mounted, but it's read only. Something's seriously wrong here, any idea what that could be?

Not sure if this will do what you want, but might be worth a look.
Try System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Once you have clicked the Login Items tab, click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the list to display a Finder like interface. Navigate to the disk you want, highlight it, and click Add at the lower right.
This should mount the disk when the computer is powered up. You will need to restart your computer for the change to take effect.

GNOME: How to get usbstick to auto-mount

Hi there,
This quite puzzles me. A few months ago, a friend of mine gave me his usbstick, and the thing just auto-mounted when plugged into a free USB port. Now I got my own stick, but no auto-mount, and mount /dev/sda1 doesn't work either ("no block device"). hotplug, dbus, hal, and udev are running. Do I need a special udev rule or something?
Is there an easy, step-by-step guide somewhere how to set up Arch linux to (auto-) mount usbsticks? The Wiki entry isn't very helpful.

Rhythmbox breaks auto mounting.

For a few days I have struggeled with making gnome-volume-manager automount removable storage devices. Some times it woked and sometimes it did not. I had enabled hal and dbus I was sure gnome-volume-manager was running. Eventualy I even loggeg into Gnome as root and everything workes perfectly, so my system is configured correctly. So maybe it was a permission issue, was what first come to my mind, but eventualy it turned out to be Rhythmbox(Rb) who was the trubblemaker. Rb does not autostart as root, as it does on my regular user account, thats way it worked as root.
Now, after some more testing, the situation is this: Automounting works perfektly until i start rhythmbox, then it just stop woking. Even if i stops Rhythmbox, automounting still is broken, even a "pkill gnome-volume-manager && gnome-volume-manager" does not fix it, but logging out and inn again does fix it! No other programs breaks auto mounting!!
I have tried to recompile Rb without both the --with-ipod and --with-dbus flags, but it did not help? Otherwise I have a standard Arch-install.

This is my rc.conf, so if you don't see anything wrong with it I can file a bug!

Package FSWmisc now mounts NTFS partitions directly. No special mount_ntfs program required. It is based on Martin Rosenau's mount_ntfs. Package FSWpart comes with prtpart, which displays all the partitions, including extended partitions, and partition types.
