SMB Symbolic Links disabled after update to 10.6.4

I just found out how to fix Access Denied messages for any WIndows share that includes a symbolic link directory. Due to a security issue the default was changed to:
\[global\]
wide links = no
This disables access to symbolic links.

I changed it back to yes for now to get it working. Will look into this more when the network is not in use. This should have been noted in the smb.conf file.

For the non-geeks in the audience. 10.6.4 broke access to smb folders being shared by a 10.6.4 machine. My popcorn hour media stremer would no longer use symbolic links as a means to find all my movies spread out on 2 disks. It could see the links as files and clicking on them gave an error message. In my case these links a symbolic links of the folders on my 2 movie drives, labeled sci-fi, westerns, etc. All the links are in my Movies folder in my main user folder. This is setup to be a shared folder and is accessed as an SMB share with my media streamers.
Apple was apparently fixing a security issue related to symbolic links but killed the ability to set up and use symbolic links like I need them for my home network media streamers.
To fix do the following:
Fixing the symbolic link issue with Samba/SMB access problem in 10.6.4
 * Open smb.conf on the samba server in your favorite text editor
put the following in a terminal window:
sudo nano /etc/smb.conf
 * Find the global samba settings section under [global] and edit the following line:
wide links = no
change to:
wide links = yes
This enables access to symbolic links.
nano is a text editor for the terminal. Use the arrow keys to get to the word no in the above string delete no and type yes.
The control-x to exit and you will be asked to save the file.
Hit return to save the modified file, do not choose any of the save options.
For the terminal editor nano, control is the modifier key in dialogs that looks like a upside-down-superscript v.

Ipad disabled after updating to ios 8

I updated my ipad 2 to ios 8 and it asked for a password, I never had a lock on this device, I guessed the same one I have on my iPhone but that didn't work, now it is completely disabled. I don't have iTunes and never plugged this iPad into a computer.
Everything is pointing now to losing all my data, but I cannot!! there are pictures of my best friend that passed away in January, I cannot lose those! I see lots of people are having this problem PLEASE help me get my pictures. They are very dear to me.

I completely understand how you feel. This has happened to me as well when I updated to IOS 8 when it first came out and now I can't get into my Ipad. The difference is that I actually had a passcode on it and just typed it in just like the million other times I did and it says that the passcode was "wrong." I thought it was just a mistake so I did it again and it said it was "wrong again, please try in 15 minutes." This went on for about a day and when I tried to login again with the passcode it completely locked me out to where it says to "connect to itunes" which I did but the Ipad doesn't show up unless I put it into recovery mode, which doesn't help either because I don't want to restore my Ipad until I back it up first.
I even took it to the apple store to the genius bar and explained my situation and they couldn't even help me, saying that unless you have a backup on your computer there is no way to recover your data on your ipad before restoring it. I thought that was completely ridiculous that it wasn't my fault that the Ipad is disabled after updating to IOS 8 and that there is absolutely NO WAY of recovering your data. I even asked if there was 3rd party software that could backup the ipad before recovering and they couldn't give me that information either.
I have been looking all around the internet for a solution but to no avail. I hope there is some information out there that can help us because there has to be SOME WAY that you can get into your ipad and backup without having to rely just on itunes and icloud.

Desktop effect disabled after update

Hello,
After updating kde 4.5 today, my desktop effects disabled and my awn navigator doesn't work properly.
When try to enable it, I get the message: Desktop effects suspended by other application. When restart with Alt-F12, awn disappears; when I shut down kde, I get the message -- Desktop effects is too slow disabled.
Before update everything worked perfectly.
Proc: dual core 2.6
Video: ati 3600
memory: 6 gig
Any idea what could be wrong?

Hi DD16, Welcome to the Nokia Forums.
Please be try and sign out of your nokia account and relog back in, also be sure that you are connected to a stable WiFi connection, and also make sure that you have enough free space on your phone memory to install any new applications.
If you still experience issues with your store account please try and install Store QML from betalabs.

Submit button in Compressor disabled after update Pro Applications Update 2010-02

Dear all,
I recently bought FCS and the whole software works fine after installation. However, I had to use Compressor over the last couple of days and the submit button was completely disabled and in the cluster field the option this computer had dissapeard. I checked this forum for a solution and found it. It seems that the problem was Qmaster. After reinstalling both Qmaster and Compressor everything works again. I have use the following set of instructions:

The problem is that now each time I do a software update, I am asked to install the Pro Applications Update 2010-02. After installing this update, the problem occurs again (the submit button is grayed/greyed out). It seems that in my computer the update creates a problem.
Does anyone have the same issue and if so, what suggestion you recommend?. At the moment I am avoiding the update, but I may me missing important bug and other fixes.

I have experimented a bit and got the problem sorted. Iuninstalled FCS using the uninstaller from http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/.Before installing the whole suite again, I realised there was and additionalApple Qmaster package in the Applications folder. I deleted this file and emptythe trash. Then did a fresh installation of FCS, performed an update andinstalled Pro Applications Update 2010-02.
And now all is up and running workingperfectly.

Sibling Link Error After Updating Software

Ok, two days ago I updated my imac software. Afterwards, the imac started running slow and freezing (which it never does). I booted through my OS X DVD and ran disk utility, repair HD. It came up with a sibling link error: can't repair drive. Not knowing what to do, I erased my HD and reinstalled Leopard. Everything ran well until I updated my software, then the same problem. At this point I erased my HD (zero out) and reinstalled Leopard with no problems. Again, I ran software update and the same problem happened, sibling link error. So this time, I erased the HD and haven't updated the software. What should I do? Should I not run software update? It appears that the problem (sibling link error) only surfaces when I update my software.

After installing Leopard off the disc (which is where you are at now), try running Disk Utility and using the +Repair Disk Permissions+ routine. Then, run Software Update and only select the 10.5.7 Update on the list of available updates. Run that one update only. After it is done, check to see of you have that same error. If you do not, run the other available updates. When it is all done, run +Repair Disk Permissions+ one more time.
Note: I always run +Repair Disk Permissions+ immediately before I have Software Update install any update.
If you still get that error after the 10.5.7 update, you can try installing Leopard from the disc again, and using the stand-alone updater for installing the 10.5.7 combo update.

Bluetooth Disabled After Updates

I have the 8gb iPhone and I'm using it with the Apple bluetooth headset. Each time a new update comes out it disables my bluetooth functions on the phone. I go to the settings, general, bluetooth.
After an iphone update is installed I go to re-enable bluetooth and all it does is display the spinning circle. It will spin like this for as long as you like trying to enable bluetooth.
I've docked the freshly updated iphone with the apple headset to get it to auto pair (since bluetooth wont enable I can't manually pair) and all it will do is charge the iphone and headset. it wont pair or activate bluetooth.
I've tried to restore then load my old settings but that doesn't work. It still won't activate bluetooth.
The only way to get bluetooth working again after an update is to do a restore then treat the phone as a brand new iphone. I can not load any of my old preferences. I have to go through the menus and redo all my sync settins and phone settings This is a pain and seems to be the only way to get bluetooth working again.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
(btw, I really like the apple headset. Fits in my ear great and I've had no complaints from people on the other end of the call. Only issue is the phone needs to be closer than 3ft to the phone to get best listening quality)

When you go to Settings -> General -> About, is there a Bluetooth address showing?
If not, try restoring the iPhone and setting it up as new. If it still isn't showing your iPhone will need to be serviced.

Yes, I have noticed the sucking more power issue. We also can't connect to the iTunes store anymore on either ipad we own after the upgrade. All the tips provided in the forums have not worked. I hope Apple peeps are paying attention to this... they are losing money!! I can't buy my stuff on iTunes, so I went to Amazon.com.

Missing linked files after update

I've used the link feature in iphoto 08, so not to duplicate my photos (I also use lightroom and bridge). Now when I updated to iPhoto 09, the photos that were linked are now missing even though they're in the same place as before. On the same main hard drive in my Shared folder. How can I relink all my albums to the right folders and not one photo at a time? I can do this easily in both Lightroom and Expression Media but I found no option to just point to the right place in iPhoto 09.

I had the exact same problem - and called Apple support and spoke to an expert, and at the end of the day there was nothing you could do, just rebuild the entire library manually (i.e. start from scratch and losing all your keepsakes, albums etc).
In my particular case, I kept my old library, and then copied the links from the newly created/rebuilt library (with the correct links) into the "Data" and "Originals" folders of the old library, then upgraded again... and then most of the links still worked. Unfortunately iPhoto 08 seemed to rename the subfolders in the "Originals" folder whenever you changed names of an event, and iPhoto 09 seems to just leave the old name, so there was a lot of renaming before it worked again.
iPhoto could be such a great app if it worked better with references - there should be a way to edit the links, make changes to the original (referenced) file, rename or move files in finder (just the way iTunes does it) - the way it's written now it's very bad. Everyone says "just do not use external references" but if you want to work with Windows/Parallels or any other image program you just want to know where your original file is and keep manual control of the folder structure, so that's not an option for me.
Apple developers: Please provide better support for referenced files, or allow more flexibility with the internal folder structure/naming!!!

Wi-fi disabled after updating to 2.0.1

I let my phone run the update over night last night (restoring to the backup I made prior) and none of the apps worked and the wi-fi was disabled (wi-fi settings are grayed out in the control panel and read "No Wi-Fi").
I've since reset it, then finally placed it in recovery mode and restored to new, but I still have the same issue.
I should note that when I initially began the update process, the phone went into password lock while I waited for the download. iTunes wouldn't allow the update to proceed until the phone was unlocked, but there was no way to unlock it. So the original update got interrupted and I had to put the phone in recovery mode right from the gate to get the update started.
So, disabled wi-fi and app insta-crash...
What gives?

Update: Insta-crash issue seems to be resolved from last attempt to restore. Wi-fi issue still present

When i updated my Iphone 4s to ios 7.0.2 suddenly wifi button disable after update and now its is now enabling. i have tried many times to restore, also tried with reset all setting from phone my whole date contents got erased but no solution over.
