.smi subtitle files

Hello out there...
Right now I'm trying to add subtitles to some movies that I have downloaded. Unfortunately, all of the subtitle files are .smi and for some reason the disk mounting image fails after downloading and the files are worthless. I can't get them to open in Quicktime and Disk Utility is doing nothing to help.
Could anyone please lead me in the right direction here? Is there someting I should know about downloading and opening subtitle .smi files in Mac OSX? Is it different than for Windows perhaps...

How can I export speech analysis text with imbedded timecodes for the creation of subtitle files?

I found a script that allows you to export all your text layers with time codes as a .srt subtitle file. However, instead of multiple text layers, I have only one: essentially the meta data from Premiere speech analysis that with the aid of a different script, is being used at a "subtitle layer". Essentially, I'm trying to use this data to create a .srt file so I can create actual subtitles, not this hybrid animation/text layer.

As I am only using one text layer, it shows me only one continious subtitle in the .srt file. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I should add that I myself am not particularly familiar with scripts or scripting, I'm merely trying all possible solutions to my problem and this seems to be a good approach. Any help would be much appreciated.

How do i add a subtitle file to a supported video file for ipad without converting the video. (.mp4)??

I have a downloaded movie in .mp4 format an i success fully added it to itunes.
But before adding it to my ipad i have an .srt file subtitles which i would like to add it to the movie.
I want to add it to movie without converting the movie.
Can i copy the content of the subtitle file to the lyrics tab in get info option to make it work?

Nevermind. In the iTunes Area I can drag and drop tunes onto the iTunes playlist I made, but NO I can't drag and drop to a synced list in the iPhone area of iTunes. Reason is that it only represents the list I sync to in iTunes.
I did download a Doug Script where I can add files from one play list to another which is neat. Donated some cash for it.

Import Subtitle File (STL)

I am trying to work out how to import a text subtitle file for use with DVD Studio Pro 4. I've been reading the manual and, from Page 456 it gave this example:

So, I take that bit of text, copy it into TextEdit, save it as an RTF file (Unicode, as recommended) and go to import the file and nothing happens. No subtitle. I've tried both right-clicking in the subtitle track as well as going to the inspector there to insert it that way. No luck.
I've even tried saving the file with different extensions (.txt, .stl, .rtf) and in different character sets (unicode-8, macroman) to no avail. Most often I get: "No corresponding subtitles found" but with some of the attempts it just does nothing. No error; no subtitle.
Anyone have a file I can test that works or tips ? I am stumped since I copied it right out of the book.

I finally got it working, what I had to do was try another example. Not sure why this didn't work for two of us but did work for someone else ... as I said, despite various format shifts (unicode-8, macroman) and file types (rtf, txt, stl) I couldn't get the DVD Studio Pro example to work. I found another example on the web, however, and this one did work. The only difference that I see is the number of "options/settings". I even tried removing some of these options/setting at it stopped working. I'm not sure if DVD Studio Pro is requiring all these for a successful import. So, I am making it work by using all the options and then just changing them (and "applying to stream") to get it to work. DVD Studio Pro translated subtitle files (Spanish) - which format?

I have an option to receive one of the following subtitle file formats from a subtitler/translator for DVD Studio Pro:
- Spruce Text .stl file (text-based file, it will have font size information but you can edit if necessary; color is not specified – you can edit on your end)
- .stl navigation file with TIFFs or BMP files – the .stl file will contain time code information for each of the TIFFS or BMP (bitmaps). You will not be able to edit the text, font, color, etc. since the TIFFS or BMP files are set graphic images.
Which is the best path?

Both are good or bad - it depends on what you intend to do.
With the text files you're way more flexible, but the quality of the subtitles is a bit below rendered titles and some fonts do either not work with DVDSP or kerning is not that nice. Rendered titles text can't be changed easily except they are 'Layered TIFFs'.
I always would go the text route as it takes less space and is more flexible.
In any case you should have a good subtitle editor as a change of timing or text is no real fun within DVDSP.
I do have an app called TitleExchange which allows to use subtitles both with FCP and DVDSP and you can use FCP to make new timing, text changes, font changes, size changes and view that real time and then send it to DVDSP as an STL text file.
But there are other apps out there which can do something similar.

Best way to parse a subtitle file (.srt) ?

I'm a total newbie with Cocoa and I'm currently trying to improve my knowledge in parsing files through a simple TableView. More precisely, I'd like to parse .srt files. Those are subtitle files that can be opened with a basic text-editor. Here's the structure of such a file :

As you see, each subtitle is composed of 3 parts : a kind of ID, the output period (xx:xx:xx,xxx) and the content (which is supposed to be composed of 2 lines max. but not everytime so...).
I'd like to be able to read an SRT file so that I can put its content into my TableView (which has 3 columns : one for the beginning time, one for the end time and one for the content).
Any help would be appreciated!

Lots of threads go something like, "How would I go about... Does anyone have any ideas?". So I write a little essay about general approach with reference links, only to be asked for sample code. Can you tell me if the format you described is a standard? I.e., is your file exactly the same as a SRT format I can find on the web? (E.g., here's one that includes some html: [http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-73953.html]). Just so you'll know how obsolete I am, I never heard of SRT before. If one of my kids was around I'm guessing I wouldn't need to Google it, but I'm on my own today.
I just need to know how much variation there could possibly be from what you posted. Hopefully my code will be clear enough for you to trim it yourself, but I'd like to get it as close as I can the first time.

Hi. I created some movies in iMovie and published them to iTunes, where they appear as "QuickTime movie files". I want to add subtitles to these movies, and to some m4v movies. I know how to use iSubtitle to add subtitles to a movie, but that is when I already have an SRT subtitles file. I do not know how to create an SRT subtitle file from scratch. Does anyone know what product / editor to use to create SRT files? Thank you

How to add subtitle file on dvd player

Hi, I have a foreign language dvd without subtitles on it, so I downloaded a subtitle (.srt) file. Is there any way I can tell the dvd player on mac leopard that I want it to play the movie with this subtitle file? When I go to "Features>Subtitles" menu of the dvd player, the only options I have are either "Off" or "Unspecified". Since the dvd has no subtitle file in it, the "Off" option is checked by default, for this dvd; and it doesnt obviously help to just uncheck it. Any ideas?

You will have to first extract the video file from the DVD. If it's not encrypted, use MPEG Streamclip

How to hard sub ".***" subtitle file to a ".mov" video

I used Aegisub to create subtitles, so my file is ".***" and my video file (edited in FCPX) is a ".mov" file. I need to hardsub my subtitles, and I have tried Handbrake, VLC, Jubler, MKVtoolnix, and a couple of other obscure programs, but I can't figure out what to do. I've tried finding a program to convert my subtitle file to ".srt" but that hasn't been successful either. Handbrake seems like it /might/ work if I could convert my subtitles to ".srt." Does anyone have suggestions?

Converting subtitle file length from PAL to NTSC

We're releasing a PAL version of a movie in the UK, whilst another company in the US will issue an NTSC conversion from our PAL master. The NTSC master therefore will run exactly 3.8462% slower than the PAL 25fps master, after standards conversion and speed correction.
We'd like to be able to use our PAL spotted subtitle file for the NTSC release, but I need to know if it's possible to 'stretch' the subtitle file by the required 3.8462% in order for it to match the NTSC running time.
I have tried a shareware app called Subtitler (by exporting the track description file and importing into Subtitler), but it does not allow me to input a stretch as a percentage - merely in frames, seconds, minutes etc, which adds the same amount to each subtitle.
Does anybody out there know of a way to create the modifid subtitle file?

Yes, I have already converted the original supplied .txt file, but (and as with most subtitle files it seems) I have had to tweek it myself and add a whole load more subtitles (directly in DVD Studio Pro), which are translations from Chinese to English, which were not included in the original supplied French to English file (the film is set in China and has both French and Chinese throughout!). I have also created another separate Chinese to English file in DVD Studio Pro. So you see my dilemma...
If only Subtitler was more stable - It crashes every time I import the DVD Studio Pro Item Description file.
A friend converted the original supplied file from PAL to NTSC using the excellent (but PC only) Subtitle Workshop.
I have been in direct contact with the very helpful author of the shareware Subtitler app, and he is working on a revision to fix the bugs.

No. Premiere Elements does not support subtitles. If you want subtitles you can workaround it by having two versions of your video, one with text added to the video track and one without - but you wouldn't be able to toggle between them during playback.

Load subtitle file

Can I load a subtitle file (.srt) with a movie (.mp4) in my Apple TV? It is possible to load a subtitle file in the DivX player but I cannot find out how to do this in my Apple TV. iTunes only accepts .mp4 files at the moment. I do not know if this can be customized one way or another.

I don't recall the exact instructions, but the general process for subtitles is to create a text file with the subtitles that is added to the Quicktime file before importing to iDVD (I suppose you could also have a transparent video file with subtitles that you layer in Quicktime).
You may get a faster response if you post over in the Quicktime forum. Remember though that iDVD is particular about file formats and would prefer the DV Stream version of Quicktime. And in any case, iDVD doesn't have the sophistication to allow the end user to turn the subtitles on and off -- if you add the subtitles and import to iDVD, the subtitles are always displayed.
