Snapshot alternatives?

Snapshot hasn't been updated for a couple years (the 6.5 version comes with ZEN
7) and it always seems to crash w/ a memory error on large applications w/ a lot
of registry entries.
We are having to resort to 3rd-party packaging utilities (like the "special
edition" AdminStudio) which do not seem to carry much support from Novell.
Those 3rd party packaging utilities don't even import into the old Distribution
Option tabs (Registry, Application Files, Icons/Shortcuts, INI settings, etc) in
Consoleone...
Looking for options, preferably free, and most preferably a fixed Snapshot
(otherwise why did we buy ZEN?)
-Eric

Let's put this simply.
Neither ZENworks nor any other leading Desktop Management Suite will
repackage software installs.
ZENworks does this better than any other product with the included tools
however.
Novell HAS gone on the record that snapshot should not be used for MSI based
installs.
MS has gone on the record that the software installs need to be MSI based to
be MS certified.
Often these MSI installs are encapsulated inside EXEs so you dont realize
they are really MSI installs.
So, as long as you are deploying uncertified Windows software that does not
update the Core Windows OS in any fashion, feel free to use snapshot.
No, Novell is not really parterned with Admin Studio, but they do get
"Starter Editions" with limited functionality to encourage you to buy the
full suite.
Do you require these products? No. Will they make managing huge
deployments easier? Yes.
I would expect snapshot and those types of apps to be 100% unsupported and
unusable come Vista.
You noted that you have not seen people changing?
Well some have and some have not.
Most will not go till forced.
Truth be told...........
Learn how MSI work.
Learn how to Modify and Tweak MSIs.
MSIs are not great nor gods gift to IT.
MSIs are the standard for managing Windows software and you need to learn it
to properly manage stuff.
Snapshot has its place, but that place is getting smaller each and every
day.
Soon that place will only be for companies many many years behind in
technology.

  • Read-only snapshot of writable environment in the same process

According to the documentation, if you open a JE environment from multiple processes, then all processes except the writer process get a read-only, point-in-time snapshot of the database that won't reflect any writes processed in the database. Is it possible to achieve this same behavior within the same process that already has the environment open for writing?
I have an application for which I would like to have two backup mechanisms: one which performs a simple file copy of the database files as is documented elsewhere, and a second one which cursors through the data and serializes it to a file that could potentially be processed for other purposes and may be accessed even if the database itself becomes damaged or corrupt. It would be very nice if this second backup mechanism of exporting the data could get the point-in-time snapshot (so that I don't have to worry about getting inconsistent data if the database environment is updated during the export) but didn't require a separate process.

You've asked an interesting question! I'm afraid that the answer is that it's not possible in BDB JE today.
What you'd really like for your second case is part of the type of functionality provided by MVCC (Multi-Version Concurrency Control). In case you're not familiar with that term, MVCC is the database feature which guarantees that all reads made in a transaction will see a consistent snapshot of the database and that the transaction will successfully commit only if no updates it has made conflict with any concurrent updates made since that snapshot. Unfortunately, while our sister product, BDB (C) has that feature, we do not yet support it.
I think your alternatives are to do achieve your point in time snapshot from the file copy based backup, from the second process, or from an application level mechanism that locks out other updates.

  • Error in viewing a flash snapshot of dashboard via BI Launch Pad

    Hi,
We currently have a dashboard developed using Dashboard Design (v4.0, SP2).  We generated a flash snapshot and imported the said swf file in BI Launch Pad.  When viewed in BI Launch Pad, an error message appears:
"Could not connect to BusinessObjects server; Check your network connection. (XLS 000003)
Could not connect to BusinessObjects server; Check your network connection. (XLS 000003) The object with ID AdMOi,pfn9CjQaXTYnVr0o does not exist in the CMS or you do not have the right to access it."
When OK is clicked, the dashboard can be viewed but with some data missing from the dashboard snapshot.

    I. Following are the best practices you should follow while migrating dashboards from Business Intelligence 4.0 Feature Pack 03 to Support Package 04:
Check the version of Dashboard Design and Business Intelligence where the dashboard was created.
It is recommended to have Dashboard Designer and Business Intelligence on the same patch (including Support Package and Patch).
Use LCM to upgrade the Dashboard. Check if all the dependencies are seen in LCM while migration.
If the UNX universe does not show up in the dependencies, include dependent UNX universe manually.
After migration, if the destination is on Higher patch (i.e moving from Feature Pack 03 to Support Package 04), Open the dashboard using Dashboard Design (e.g. Support Package 04) and save back to BI platform (without any changes). Alternately, before migration you can re-save the Dashboard to BI platform using destination patch level of Dashboard designer (say Support Package 04 when moving from Feature Pack 03 to Support Package 04). Use LCM to promote Dashboard to destination.
II. Restart Dashboard Design Cache Server and Dashboard Design Processing Server.

  • Snapshot naming

    Snapshot naming:
    - Default to date, date/time or last edit name (default naming selectable via preferences)

Alternative or optional method: show date/time when hovering over the Snapshot name. This would be nice for the history pallet, as well.

  • How do you troubleshoot a scheduled snapshot

Hello, I have a ton of reports that have a snapshot taken on the 2nd day of the month. Has worked fine until this past weekend when the snapshots did not happen. There is nothing I see in SSRS that explains it. The schedule is still there. Is there a way
to find the root cause of why the snapshots didn't fire? The server and database were functioning at the time.

    Hi cmunkres,
As JJordheim posted earlier, please check if the schedule is work well in the report server. In SSRS, we can open the Schedule table in the ReportServer database to check the schedule. And the SnapshotData table is record the data about the snapshot.
    Reference: Report Server Database
Alternatively, we can check the log file to fine the root case. In SSRS 2012, the log file default location is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles
Could you please post the error log? It is benefit for us to do further analysis.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to adjust the photo angle and size in Snapshots theme

    Hi
I'm new to aperture and am having a few frustrated-hair-pulling issues with the Snapshots theme. I was using iPhoto to create a Photobook of my son's first year and found it to be too limited for what I want to create. I came across Aperture and was wow'ed by the description saying I could rotate and resize photos, add text boxes etc. This was just what I was after so I downloaded the free trial to test it. I like the snapshots theme the best for the idea of it looking more "homemade" but seem to be unable to adjust the photo angle and size from the given templates. Also I find that the border in adding new photos (which I can adjust the size and rotation of) is without the custom shadow effect that the template ones have. Duplicating the template photo only gives one with the shadow effect but also of the same size with the same rotation that I can't do anything with! Rrrrghhhh
I thought this would be a great way to customize the album I'm making for my little boy, and that it wouldn't be too hard! My mac skills are considerable, but I'm by no means an expert! Is this program too much for a non-pro-creative-housewife with a wish that may be solveable in iPhoto afterall?
Or am I just missing something? Is there a way to do this or shall I just give up and choose another theme?
Any recommendations are welcome! Please!!! My scalp is now officially sore!

Here's the solution I used to solve the same problem. If you're not comfortable editing the source files, this might be more than you want to take on--but I've done it to several files with no ill effects. You can follow the instructions on this page and the referenced original post from (he includes a link on the page). Good luck! He's got some great tips on some of his other pages.
    http://photo.rwboyer.com/2010/03/15/aperture-3-book-theme-trick/
A warning about editing the Master pages--it only edits them in that book--it doesn't update the theme. So if you go to create another book with those same layouts, you'll have to duplicate the book and replace all the images. An alternative would be to create a "clean" book with no photos in it and then just use that as a starting point each time.

  • Alternative way of Updating of Subinventory Accounts

    Hi.
Issue at hand : How to update (alternative way) the subinventory accounts of FIN and STAGE?
    Facts :
    1. Current setup includes - OM, Financials, INV ( but only to a very minimum level, having 2 Subinventories FIN and STAGE used for Order-to-Cash Cycle )
    2. Recently, MFG and INV are being implemented.
    3. Standard Costing
Since, there are already onhand and transactions using FIN and STAGE, we are looking at updating the accounts (setup) of FIN and STAGE to a different set.
I am aware of the procedure provided by Oracle on updating Subinnventory accounts, creating a new subinv and transferring onhand to that new subinv, handle reservations, etc., then update the account setup, and return the onhand, etc.
One team member suggested that we update the subinventory accounts directly from the database, similar to the script below:
    Update MTL_SECONDARY_INVENTORIES
    set material_overhead_account = 78373,
    overhead_account = 78373,
    resource_account = 78373,
    outside_processing_account = 78373
    where organization_id in (1234, 9999) and secondary_inventory_name in ('FIN', 'STAGE');
Question: What do you think is/are the implications of this process?
Your help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Basically I have windows server with Oracle 11g (11.2.0.1) server and the database on this server needs to retired and move the data of it to a new server has Linux 64 and Oracle 11g built on it. Here are my answers below:
What exactly have you tried and done?
    A.  I used "Cross-Platform Transportable Database" to transfer data from Windows to Linux and I am already done, database on the new server (Linux) has been tested and upgraded to latest release (11.2.0.4), my next step is the cutover but the data is too old (2 weeks ago) so I need to take a new data from the current prod server.
How long did it take and what is your downtime requirement for this migration and what how do you define a "huge database"?
    A. RMAN convert took approximately 5hrs to convert data files from Windows to Linux (Please note that I used rman convert on source server)
and It took me a day and half to copy the converted files remotely from source in which files been placed to the destination server (the network bandwidth was about 100kb/s so it was so slow) next time I will copy data files on external hard disk then mount them on the new server if I use RMAN convert again.
End users accepts that the database can be in read only mode for one day business hours but they can't take it more so I'm really concern about the time when taking a new snapshot of data. Also, the size of data is about 380G and that's why I asked again if data pump will be more useful and faster than RMAN for copying data to the new platform.
Sorry if I made you confused!
Thanks again for all the support on here.

  • Snapshot / Trend Fact Design

I have a fact table that has the file sizes of all the files in the organisation and it has 10 billion rows. Now we have a requirement of see the trend of these files growth over a period of time.
If i use snapshot date and use this to link a dimension with snapshot ( monthly or yearly ) that will solve my problem to see trend but that means no of rows in fact will be multiplied by snapshots that will lead to performance issues and not feasible. Is
there any alternative solution to solve this in terms of design and reporting, please help
File Fact : 10 Billion rows
        ID  |  FileName  |  Size(GB)  |  Snapshot Date

Hi if the data loaded in the data mart is only having percentages and not having constituents then they cannot be added to any other levels other than the once at which they are loaded. The only way is to ensure that that data to be loaded is the constituents as shown in example.
Suppose user needs to see Gross Profitability which is ( Revenue - Cost)/ Revenue
I should not be creating a measure called Gross Profitability if i require reports of gross profitability at different context. Rather I should create Revenue and Cost as my measures so that i can calculate the Gross Profitability at any level required.

Thanks for the valuable info Mimosa.
In our company, they call the snapshot: copy of the production box to the box on the SAN network. The copy is made to the disc. Here the snapshot disc is on RAID 0 and production disc is on RAID 5. They do this every night.
In our company backup is : taking copy to the tape. they do this every weekend.
Its interesting that they do the 'split mirror on-line backup' daily during system is available to all users & jobs. Wondering if you have any details of this backup. What is the procedure called. What level is this copy done, on the database level, network functionality or sap functionality.....?

  • Outlook Integration: unable to create snapshot templates.

    Dear all,
I followed all the steps mentioned in note 861055
"You can easily repeat the step of template creation after running the server installation:
       1. Start the Addon Outlook Integration from Business one.
       2. Choose/Administration/Outlook Integration/Define Snapshot Templates
       3. Select "Create Default Templates" from the "Goto" menu. This will repeat the procedure that could not be started because of the missing layout files."
But when I choose "Create Default Templates" nothing happens...
    I'm using SBO 2005A SP01 PL31 and Outlook Integration PL60.
Also, what's the difference between the OIStandAlone and the OutlookIntegration files?

    Hello,
This issue is really interesting, I really desperate to install it. I read the note and find out that server installation must be run before initialisation of addon in the client workstation. Initialisation means addon registration. I just think the template will be created in the client workstation if the server installation has run. Both must be run. But here the explanation I've got from pdf file :
Template Layout Files for Microsoft Outlook Integration Snapshots
The SAP Business One Add-On Server Installer copies the template layout files for snapshots in the following subfolder in <B1DIR>: B1_SHR\AddOn\Microsoft Outlook Integration\Templates\Default. However, if the SAP Business One 2005 SP01 application is not a new installation but an upgrade, the name of the subfolder is the same as for SAP Business One 2004.
In the Default folder, there are language-specific folders for all templates. After you complete the registration of the Microsoft Outlook add-on on your server and begin the initialization in a company database from a client, the add-on creates default templates for the current language of the company to which you are logged on. These default layout files are also stored in <B1DIR> in the following subfolder: B1_SHR\AddOn\Microsoft Outlook Integration\Templates\<name of company database>\Default. When you later use the add-on to create additional default templates (by using the Create Default Templates function of the add-on), your default templates are also stored in: B1_SHR\AddOn\Microsoft Outlook Integration\Templates\<name of company database>\Default.
However, if the application is unable to locate this folder or the folder cannot be created, a selection window will allow you to select a different location. This path will be stored in the company settings of the Microsoft Outlook Integration add-on and can be changed by you. The default layout files for the company are copied to the Default subfolder of the folder you select.
The OIStandalone is a standalone installer for the Microsoft Outlook Integration add-on. This tool allows you to install the add-on without having to install the SAP Business One client on your PC. The alternative installer is appropriate for scenarios in which the SAP Business One client is not installed on the same PC as Microsoft Outlook. An example of such a scenario is the use of the Terminal Server for SAP Business One.
If you have tried, let me know the result.
    Rgds,

  • Problems Implementing SnapShots Scenario for Stock Management

    Hello All,
I am trying to configure the Inventory Management with snapshots and I am using the snapshot scenario. According to the document I have created alternative ODS ODSSNAP and infocubes to accumulate 2LIS_03_BX, 2LIS_03_BF and 2LIS_03_UM.
My problem is with the key figures ZTOTALST,ZVALSTCKV and ZVALSTCKQ.
I am facing this problem in the ODS when i try to create the update rule for 2LIS_03_BX. I have the two Characteristics Unit and Currency automatically mapped but i don´t see the key figures of the ODS. I supposed that my key figures may appear without assignment but they don´t appear.
I should have my key figures non mapped but instead I cannot see them.I tried with another standard infosource 2LIS_03_BF and I see my key figures.
    I have BW 3.5 patch level 20.
Can you please let me know any ideas?
    Thanks
    TK

OK, non cumulative are not stored in your provider but calculated on the fly:
    NonCum = InFlow - OutFlow.
then you have to work with your good receipts and goods issue flow key figures....
For your scenario, as far as I understood you just need to see a "snapshot" (latest know stock values) you just need to update your receipts and issues with summation in your ODS; your stock will then be calculated.
Usually a "snapshot" scenario means that you want to store your stock at the end of each month for example; in this case you need to use cumulatives with exception aggregation "LAST" on your time period so that the stocks aren't summarized over time. This way you update your cumulative Stk KF is updated with goods receipts - good issues. Also remind that in this scenario you'll have to load the previous month stock into the next
Stock July = Stock June + Receipts July - Issues July.
As you realize, it can get quite complex...
Please precise your requirement and we'll help you further since I am doing all kind of scenario re stocks...
    hope this helps...

  • How to Manually Restore SharePoint Content Database from DPM Backup to Alternative Farm

I have restored a content database of a site collection from a DPM backup, and the result is the MDF and LDF files of the database in a directory I specified in the restored wizard in DPM.
In my other SharePoint farm (a test environment) simply trying to attach these files in the target farm's SQL server produces an error as follows:
"Paths that begin with \\?\GlobalRoot are internal to the kernel and should not be opened by managed applications. (mscorlib) "
Given I have the DPM restored database, on an alternative farm, how can I manually restore this content database? What are the required steps?

    Hi
Gr8 - don't ask me to explain, somehow SQL caches the backup location which is from a snapshot starting with
\\?\GlobalRoot and copying them discards that so they can me mounted.

  • Alternative table name on client side

    Hi,
i'm using java api for my publication and i have to use an alternative table name on client side. For example the table name on database back-end is 'EMP', but, the statement for the snapshot is "SELECT * FROM EMP" but i would like using another name on client side, not 'EMP'. The API doc does'not help me.
    Thanks

I do not believe this is possible. When publishing you get an error if the publication item name is not found in the schema database.
More complicated, but would work, would be to create a view in your main schema create view v_emp as select * from emp
you can then use v_emp as the name, and this is what will be created on the client. Depending on the view complexity, you may need to create instead of ionsert/update/delete triggers for it, and in the publication item define the base tabe and PK values

Where is the snapshot stored before it is copied somewhere, so that it can be retrieved as an image.
Alternative is to take snapshot and copy into a Powerpoint page and then save page as an image.

It's copied to the clipboard, as any other copy operation.
You can use any imaging program to paste it into, then save as an image.

  • Backup of 100+ Mac clients (10.4,10.5,10.6) ... alternatives please

We have been using Retrospect Workgroup 6.1 successfully for many years on OS X Server v10.4 & v10.5 to backup Mac OSX Clients on 10.4.
With OS X Server 10.4 was fine, no problems really.
With OS X Server 10.5 it was OK, but occassionally we would have to reinstall the latest Retrospect Client v6.2.234.
    It's fine on PC's BTW :-O
Now with Mac OS X 10.6 clients, and Mac OS X 10.5 Clients w updates, the Retrospect Client reinstall is now down to bi-weekly and I'm totally feed-up.
I don't believe Retrospect 8.x wil be any better.
Retrospect Workgroup 6.1 should have been solved first, and quite honestly I'm not paying for 5-10 new versions and multiple client licenses, especially as their is NO upgrade path.
So I'm jumping ship and looking for alternatives.
As all my clients are Advertising Agencies, and we are looking at 10-30 Gig per Mac per day backup.
I do not feel that TimeMachine is any kind of option, as TimeMachine kicks off too often and I need to back within the 10pm to 8 am time window. And I don't want to have to wangle some weirdo TimeMachine utility setup on every Mac either.
Installing secondary drives on each Mac, for TimeMachine, is madness and expensive too.
Don't mention SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner please, as I'm taking centralised network backups here... of specific folders (USERS) on each Mac.
So, what options or alternatives do I have please?
    Maybe Retrospect 8.x is Good?
I do find it overly laborious to setup though! Especially if it inherits 6.1 issues...
    Thank you.

We are currently using Retrospect 6.1 to backup laptops and Retrospect 8.2 to backup servers. We currently don't backup desktops because they are all configured to use Network Logins and Network Home Directories and as a (deliberate) result, all the user files are stored on a Mac server.
Retrospect has a great feature set, and Retrospect 8.2 is now mostly reliable. Unfortunately speed wise Retrospect has made little or no progress. A big problem is that all the various tasks Retrospect does are all written so they only take advantage of a single processor. It also only in 8.2 was finally made 64bit aware so it could (allegedly) take advantage of more than 2GB of RAM. I run it on an 8-core Mac pro with 10GB of RAM and hardly ever see it move much above 100% (i.e. one core) CPU usage. It can spend hours 'storing snapshot' and does not take advantage of the multiple CPU cores by doing a scan of the next computer at the same time.
So the features are ok, the reliability is mostly ok, but the speed ***** big time. (I will ignore the issue of SCSI reliability, we switched to using eSATA connected hard disks.)
Therefore Retrospect/Sonic Solutions now need to concentrate 100% of their efforts on a massive performance upgrade.
Tolis BRU has a lot of promise, but last I checked its 'support' for using hard disks as backup media was a sick joke. They also have an aversion to adding support for 'data de-duplication' a feature Retrospect and most serious backup solutions have. This is particularly useful for trimming down the amount of space taken by all the Microsoft Office font folders (grrr.).
For another company I advise on IT for, I switched them to using SuperDuper (also with eSATA disks) to back up their servers.
