Snippets and Project Size

Hello,
Does anyone know if reusing text in snippets reduces the
project size after it has been generated?
M.S

That depends on the amount of text in the snippet. Don't
forget to consider the additional characters required for the
various tags used by snippets in the HTML. However I think if you
are worried about the size of your output you have far bigger
problems. The size of a reduction / increase is utterly
negligible.

  • Skins and project size

I need to have a skin on a file but it cannot cover the file
area. Is there a solution to this problem?
I know that the skin can be put in a seperate file but this
is NOT an option as the framework used cannot handle skin files.
Another solution I have thought of is whether it is possible
to expand the canvas of the filearea post recording as this would
make room to place the skin inside the file itself.

    Rick,
I had a similiar problem.....I tried your suggestion but it
didn't achieve the results I need. I need to take the background
image and shrink it to 90% of original size (which I can do using
the resize function). This would mean the canvas would remain at
100%---so I'd have a border around the image to place buttons. Then
I want to create my own navigational buttons and move them outside
of the image---onto that extra canvas space. I can resize to 90%,
but Captivate won't allow me place buttons outside of the
background image (on the additional canvas space created). I guess
that it may not be possible to do this.
What I'm encountering is that in some cases, is that I've got
custom navigation buttons like "Show Me" or "Let me Try" that I
want to place in the same area on every slide. The problem is that
these buttons will sometimes cover screen elements that are
important. I'm trying to determine if I move these custom
navigation buttons to an area off of the image.....

  • Project Size and Multiple CHMs

I'm looking for some information on the affects/dangers of large projects and the feasability of breaking up a large project into several smaller ones and linking them together.
From time to time, we experience significant speed issues when loading and editing topics.  How much does project size affect this? At what point does a project's size become "dangerous"? Can a project get so big that is damages itself (i.e., corrupts files, etc), or does it just reach a point where it won't compile anymore?
We use RoboHelp 7 HTML, but are considering upgrading to Robo 9 and also to Windows 7 (64-bit, I believe). We use Sourcesafe. Certainly moving the project to a faster machine would speed things up, but I'm wondering if we'd still want to break up the project into smaller projects to improve speed and ensure the project does not get too big.
Our project has 1767 topics. We have begun to add more graphics to topics, although the overall number of graphics is small.  We generate CHM and webhelp. The CHM is 13.8 megs. The folder for the compiled webhelp is 61 megs.

I would not have thought that size of project should cause performance issues. I have some projects with over twice that number of topics and a fair number of graphics.
I would start investigating by taking a copy of the project out of source control and trying it on a different machine with reasonable performance. I think this is more an environment issue rather than one of project size.

  • If i move my iphoto & iMovie source library / Events and Projects to an external hard disk, due to size, will my existing slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly, possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I was planning on manually backing up my external to the time capsule - but is there a way to set it up to back up automatically instead?
Time Machine will backup up automatically - you can not have your iPhoto library on the same volume as the TM backup (it will not work and it would not be a backup)
Dragging the iPhoto library to any external drive will backup it us also
I was also thinking about having the library copied to another external (I mean we're talking about irreplaceable photos here) - would i just drag a copy of the library to that drive as well?
Yes - that is a good idea - I run TM giving me hourly backups and a daily clone of my entire system giving me a bootable backup - plus do an occasional TM backup at our second home so I have one off site
is it possible to deal with my imovie library in the same way? so all my movies and photos are on my external?
Probably - but I use iMovie very little - better question for the iMovie forum

  • Drag and Drop and Image Size

I need to be able to drag and drop images but I need them to be a certain size when I drag them out of an Aperture project. For various reasons, I don't want to use the export function. Only drag and drop will be efficient for the workflow that I"m planning. Problem is, the pixel dimension is not wide enough when I test it by pulling an image on to the desktop.
My ultimate goal is drag them, sized and ready to go, and drop them onto a web browser upload page. I don't want to fumble with the extra steps of exporting them to another folder on the desktop and then upload the images from that folder to the browser.
So does anybody know how or if it's possible to control the drag and drop SIZE /DIMENSION of an image?

The drag and drop size is determined by your preview settings. What actually gets "dragged & dropped" is the preview, not the master file. You can control the quality and size of the preview in the Aperture preferences.

  • MS Project Very Slow and Project Files Large when Using Shared Resource Pool

    Hello,
We are using MS Project 2010 Professional in our organization and using a shared resource pool so we can easily identify resource conflicts.  When we started this process many months ago the resource pool worked great.  Now that we have nearly
all of our projects (~40) using the resource pool, it has become essentially unusable.  Each project file that is sharing the resource pool is 12 MB or greater in file size, and most of the project files contain less than 100 lines.  Saving any file
takes ~4 minutes.  As a result, many of the resource managers and project managers are starting to avoid using MS Project which is undermining our original intent.
Any thoughts on what we could try to regain the usability, make the file sizes smaller, improve save times, etc.?  Will MS Project Server fix all of these issues?
    Thanks,
    Josh

If any of your PMs renamed, moved or over-wrote their project file whilst linked to the Resource Pool or a master, then the file may well have corrupted itself or the pool or both. With 40 files, you can guarantee one or more PMs will do one of the above,
so file corruption is a when, not if (2days or 2 years or more).
For 40 projects Project Server or any solution that copies data to a database so the resource data can be consolidated is needed. Project Server is not a simple application, it's a full server and requires proper training and processes to add value. And
it needs configuring by someone who knows what they're doing!
In the mean time try unattaching all project files from the pool, then create a new blank pool and re-attach.You will also need to File, Save as to repair each project file if needed. For bad corruption save as to a .xml format then re-import to a blank
    project.
Or, create a new master each time by inserting all projects into a new blank project, but deselecting the Link option. All tasks are then copied and the resource data consolidated. Record a macro to make creating this very quick and easy (provided your network
    isn't too slow).

I just updated my iTunes on 12-7-2012 and I do not like the newer version.....can I go back to the earlier version??  This new version does not have the iTunes DJ nor does is show at the bottom as in the earlier version how many songs and the size of my library.

To do this in iMovie 11. use the SHARE menu. Share your project using the Share menu and choose Export Using QuickTime.
In the Dialog box that comes up, choose Sound to AIFF, or one of the other sound options. This will create a file that you can drag into iTubes.

  • What is the best Practice to improve MDIS performance in setting up file aggregation and chunk size

    Hello Experts,
in our project we have planned to do some parameter change to improve the MDIS performance and want to know the best practice in setting up file aggregation and chunk size when we importing large numbers of small files(one file contains one record and each file size would be 2 to 3KB) through automatic import process,
below is the current setting in production:-
    Chunk Size=2000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
    file aggregation-5
    Records Per Minute processed-37
and we made the below setting in Development system:-
    Chunk Size=70000
No. Of Chunks Processed In Parallel=40
    file aggregation-25
    Records Per Minute processed-111
after making the above changes import process improved but we want to get expert opinion making these changes in production because there is huge number different between what is there in prod and what change we made in Dev.
    thanks in advance,
    Regards
    Ajay

    Hi Ajay,
The SAP default values are as below
    Chunk Size=50000
No of Chunks processed in parallel = 5
File aggregation: Depends  largely on the data , if you have one or 2 records being sent at a time then it is better to cluster them together and send it at one shot , instead of sending the one record at a time.
Records per minute Processed - Same as above

  • Sudden huge increase in project size

So I've got this problem with projects where when I go in and maybe tweak an automation parameter and save, the project size shoots thru the roof, and for instance after doing this a few times with one of my projects, it has gone from 33 MB to - I kid you not - 297 MB.
Scared to make any more changes to it now, it will be at 1GB in no time.
This is not including audio files or anything - just the project (song) file itself.
    Anyone else encountering this?

Are you maybe recording your Automation in "write" mode? Try latch/touch mode instead where only the automation is written which you are actually using on your tracks. Check your Automation event lists for redundant automation data.

  • Customizing Paging File: what is the recommended initial and maximum size?

    Hi everyone, and Harm,
Following Harm's response to my question about how to setup disks, Harm said this:
"disk allocation: It is a three stage process, first you define the boot order in the BIOS, then you format the disks inWindows and allocate drive letters, then still in Windows you setup the pagefile. Then the allocation of media cache, preview, project etc. is done in the preferences and project setup of PR."
and I have a question about paging file.
First let me say describe my new machine, it has a 4 disc setup, no RAID, 16GB RAM, with OCZ-Vertex3 for OS & Programs, i.e. i have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on this disc, and Web Premium CS5 and Acrobat Pro 9. In BIOS, i have made the OCZ (OS) disk, be the priority in the Boot order.
Later, after verifying the system is in working order, i will upgrade to Classic Collection CS5.5, so at this point, i have named my 3 additional disks as such,
    WDC WD 2002FAEX-007BA0 - "Media Projects(D)"
WDC WD 1002FAEX-00Y9A0 - "Pagefile, Media Cache (E)"
    WDC WD 1002FAEX-00Y9A0 - "Previews, Exports(F)"
So, for now these are simply names, which i have given to the various disks, and now i am changing the paging file, switching it from happening in the OS disk, in order to happen inthe disk which (via Premier, later) will be designated for Media Cache.
So, in Windows Performance Options pane, I went to Advanced tab, & under Virtual memory I hit "change", uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, select drive E, which is the disk that's to have the paging file happen in it.
And the question, assuming that i am supposed to select Custom size, can you Harm, or/and others, please recommend the Initial and Maximum sizes?
Or, should i select "System managed size"?
    Thanks:)

Keep in mind Video/Animation applications use more ram now than almost any other type and there are far more memory hungry services running in the background as well. Consider the normal recommendations are for standard applications. HD material changed far more than just the need for 64Bit memory addressing.

  • Maximum project size exceeded

Is there a way to change the maximum project size? I have an index of images on a drive, broken into folders, and I want them all in the same project.

    No ... 10,000 is the limit ...
why not store each folder (from your hd) as a project and put those within blue folders ...
this way, clicking on a higher level folder will show all contents of all projects within it ...

  • Setting up the correct custom project size size for keynote presentation in FCP 7 or motion?

    Hi...anyone else do this?
I have been creating and editing films in FCP (not X) for years now and have got into creating the whole presentation for clients awards ceremonies etc. via Keynote on my iPad via HDMI to HD projectors and it looks amazing and is seamless on the night. No need for crappy powerpoint slides and jumping to low res DVD films - its all controlled via my iPad.
But i want to up the creativity of the presentations - at the moment we import the films as mp4 HD QT files and jpegs of the speakers/nominees/titles screens etc. created in Photoshop and put the whole thing together in Keynote on my iPad. It worked a treat and my clients love it!
Now i had a thought and did a test and created Motion graphics versions of the speakers titles and nominees screens in Apple Motion - so that they had an animated section at the start with whoosh audio stingers as they are played and not just stills - and then export them as QT files - import to FCP 7 timeline and export to compresser ready to convert to mp4 for Keynote.
This way i can extend the static part of the screen after the motion graphic part to say 10 mins as i never know how long the speaker will be on stage.
Then when the speaker moves on the next item i can hit the ipad which will move to the next presentaion screen!
    Q. Now ive been doing these as HD 16:9 screens - but when imported to Keynote I have a white band top and bottom on the screen so i really need to start with a template screen size of 1024 x 768 for Keynote and also keep this size in FCP 7! And also export to Quicktime as the same size.
When i do static jpegs to import into Keynote i just define the pixel canvas size - 1024 x 768 @ 300dpi in Photoshop and it works fine but im not sure what to do in Motion or PCP as I have always created my films in 16:9 HD widescreen preset!
Anyone else doing this and got a solution to my problem and can help with custom project sizes in motion and FCP 7!

1024x768 is 4x3.  2048x1536 is 4x3.  Both of these are current display dimensions for iPads 1-3.
HD video (1920x1080 or 1280x720) is a 16x9 aspect ratio.
Try putting a rectangle in a square. Unless you scale the retangle up and lose image on the sides you will not be able to properly fill the entire 4x3 display area. The easy compromise is letterboxing to ensure all of the rectangle is display in the square. The iPad is doing this with very little effort on your part.
In FC you can create a new sequence and go into the settings and customize it to 1024x768, 2048x1536 or
just about any other dimension. Even If you create a custom sequence at 1024 or 2048 in FC you will see the same results that the iPad is giving you with much less effort, render and conversion time (presuming your keynote workspace cannot change in dimensions or aspect ratio and you are unwilling to crop your 16x9 aspect ratio video to fill the space.)

  • IDVD Project Size Stuck @ 4.54 GB

I created an iDVD project using Magic iDVD and the Pass Through theme (6.0 theme). These are the contents:
    (1) a main menu movie of 6 MB and a 30-second soundtrack (not the same soundtrack as the movie)
    (2) 3 submenus with still photos and a 30-second soundtrack for each
    (3) 2 movies, one 840 MB and the other 870 MB (made with iMovie)
    (4) 3 slideshows of only 10 seconds each. The slideshows each have only 2 pictures.
The project size, using professional quality encoding, ended up at 4.54 GB. This seemed strange to me because I had previously created an iDVD project with 5 submenus, five 10-second slideshows, a 2.88 GB movie (made with iMovie), and using professional quality encoding...and it was still able to fit in one DVD!
Here's the other strange thing: When I replaced one of the movies with a 1.99 GB movie (also made with iMovie), the project size still showed up as 4.54 GB! So I think there's definitely some program glitch here somewhere, either in iDVD or iMovie.

So to clarify: iDVD doesn't care abt the size of the movies but abt the total running time of the movies...is this correct?
That is correct. With the exception of adding content to the dvd-rom section, iDvd only looks at run time or total QT playback (not to exceed 2 hrs. per SL Dvd-R). If you do add content to the dvd-rom section it then reduces available QT Playback. Same holds true when you add audio files, motion menus, photos, titles, etc. The available playback is shortened / reduced each time these additional /extra features are added to your dvd. That's why it's always a good idea to keep a close eye on the Capacity Meter within Project Info. It'll tell you how much space is remaining as well as how much is currently used by all of the content on your dvd.
Another item you need to watch very carefully is iDvd's Map View. If after you add content you then see an exclamation mark (yellow warning sign); iDvd is telling you you must address this file properly before it can be burned to disc. Otherwise it will likely choke during the encoding process.

  • Multiple content databases and Project Sites

    Hi,
I am in the process of migrating our Project 2007 PWA + Project Workspaces data to Project 2010.  Our PWA site and the Project Workspaces are in a single content DB (2007) and I am trying to work out what I should do when I migrate it.  Our content
DB is about 150GB which I believe is around the maximum that it should be.
I am unsure about a couple of things.
    1. In SharePoint, you can assign multiple content DBs to a single web application, but each Site Collection will only live in a single content DB.  Given that all of the Project Sites are actually just sub-sites of a single Site Collection I cannot see
a way to ever split them up into multiple content DBs.  Am I missing something?
    2. There is another post in this forum talking about whether to split PWA and Project Sites into different content DBs (and therefore Site Collections) with Project 2010 or not.  Even though I have read it I am still unclear as to whether or not I should
do this and what the actual pros and cons are.
Thanks in advance for the replies.
    Cheers,
    David

    All,
The requester wants more than 1 Site Collection for Project Sites and he wants more than 1 content database for each site collection. Neither of which apparently SharePoint can do. However,
for large numbers of Projects and associated Project Sites this will almost certainly be a necessity.
The Suggestion was that the PWA site collection and Project Sites site collection could be different and hence on different databases (even web apps). Fine. But not helpful, really, since that
only gets us to two site collections.  One very small and one that will potentially grow very large, too large.
What appears to also have been suggested was to create a separate site collection for very large project sites.
While this approach could work, it is administration intense and is bound to have issues related to PWA navigation, etc...and certainly not part of the Project Server 2010 PWA automatic Site
Creation methodology.  It also is after the fact and not really scalable.  it would be possibe, but tricky to do this after the fact - moving it from one site collection to another - and then reset the URL in PWA Server Settings,
    could be done.
I would suggest something similar, but a bit more pragmatic...Thanks Bruce!
Create 1 new Site Collection for Project Sites (same web app) in a new content DB - use script.
Setup PWA to provision all new Project Sites to that new site collection.  Maintains automatic site provisioning.
    Monitor
the size of the DB, when it reaches a reasonable limit (? 50GB ?) - repeat this process, create another site collection in a new DB - but
change the PWA provisioning settings to have all new sites go to the new (next) site collection.  Existing sites will still be found (keep the site collections in the same web app for continuity) and can have content added (I guess up
to a point - monitor).  Repeat as needed.
Another way I can conceive of is to create a fixed set of a small number of site collections (in the same web app) and manage the Project Site creation manually selecting which
project site goes against which site collection. Division along some logical boundary such as Departments makes sense. But other divisions may be used. This could scale by simply adding more site collections at each department (HR-2), should any given department's
DB grow too big. Then all the logically related Project Sites will hang off the site collection selected and be part of that database for that site collection for that "department" let's say.
just a variation of the above solution.  Monitoring the DB size is key in both cases.
There may of course be caveats to any approach other than OOTB and all in 1 site collection, around navigation, web parts, solution starters, etc...some of which are addressed elsewhere. Of
course, this is admin intensive but retains automatic provisioning for new sites. I believe it would work and meet the requirements for smaller DB's and multiple Site collections for PWA Project Sites and scale to thousands of project sites.
    Thanks,
    Eric S.

  • Too Big Project Size?

How big is too big for projects? What are your average project sizes?
Having very sticky and sluggish movement in current project and noticed it was over 40MB. Didn't seem so huge at first but then I noticed most other projects I have are under and around 10. Is the project just too big? Nothing extraordinary or strange about the project. The sluggishness is primarily when scrubbing through primary cut/sequence. Only a 2 min sequence. If Premiere can't handle two minute sequence how are they cutting features with it?
Anyone else have this problem or notice anything like this with larger projects?

I was referring the preview file format.  Currently, we're editing with ProRes LT Quicktimes and setting the preview file format to reflect that (attached).  However, the MPEG I-Frame seems to be the default in Premiere.  Is that more stable?
However, is there a better format/codec for Premiere?  We always cut in ProRes on FCP 7, but I'm not opposed to something different (we run on Mac).
Also, I removed all warp stabilizers from my project and it significantly decreased project size.  Unfortunately, the project is still sluggish.  Feeling there is some type of corruption.
    Thanks Mark!
