Please don't type in all caps. It's considered the Internet equivalent of shouting. It's also just plain ol' harder to read.
Have no idea what you mean by a "cool" release. Have never heard of such a term in my entire computing life (and that's been over two decades).
What Niel meant by a disk originally shipped with a Mac, are the gray disks every Mac comes with. They are machine specific and only contain the drivers for the Mac they were bundled with. So they will not work on other Macs.
A retail disk has the drivers for as many Mac models as Apple supported for that OS. A retail disk looks like this:
If you need a retail disk, call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE to order one.

  • Photoshop CS2 or CS3 on Snow Leopard Mac?

Does anyone have a clue about whether CS2 or CS3 will run on the new Snow Leopard OSX when it is released? Apple has indicated that Snow Leopard will only run on Intel equipped machines. I'm presently running G4 and G5 units. I was thinking of buying a new Mac PowerBook Pro later this year but if it is going to render all my present software obsolete, i may rethink the question and stay on the Leopard OS version.

Thanks! I appreciate your response. it will help in my future decision making. BTW- although Adobe may not support CS2 on Leopard 10.5.7, my experience is that it has been running fine with the exception of the "web gallery" feature. I am able to build web galleries fine in Photoshop Elements 6 however. The failure of web galleries for me in CS2 may be something other than the OS affecting it.

  • Move from Tiger to Snow Leopard Has Slowed Down MBP Fall '08

I had to upgrade to snow leopard recently to use new releases of some software I use (like MacSpeech Dictate). Since upgrading, the speed of my mac has slowed significantly. Expose used to happen immediately. Now, it takes 4-7 seconds. When I switch from one program that's already open to another program that's already open, it often takes 10-20 seconds to switch. Etc. I've been a mac guy since before the mac (used the Lisa) and I've never been this unimpressed with an "upgrade."
Is there something I can do to get back to a mac that works when I want it to work?

Sounds like you have some software which hasn't been tested with 10.6. See my upgrade FAQ* for resources to find out if this has happened:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Downgrading is much harder, though is outlined in this tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=6183892
Note, for a MacBook Pro that shipped with less than 10.5, you must use the original MacBook Pro installer discs, or a clone backup to restore your system to 10.4.11 or earlier.

  • Snow Leopard Server Update Issue

    Good afternoon.
I had some issues with my software update server, not issuing the correct updates and been real sluggish etc. After doing some research on the web and in this forum, I have reset the /etc/swupd and /var/db/swupd folders, rebooted, turned back on the update server and reconfigured everything.
I have noticed that after some time, the updates are downloaded and the blue exclamations go away. I enable the updates that I want and save everything. After a reboot of the server, all my enabled copied downloads are back to 0. And the "Updates Copied" and "Updates Enabled" are back to 0.
I have repaired disk permissions, FSCK etc, and all appears well. In the my /var/db/swupd/html/content/downloads, I have a couple GB of stuff. If I go further into this folder structure I can actually see the updates. It feels like a configuration file is not been written to correctly, and hence on reboot everything goes back to default. The permissions on swupd.conf and swupd.plist appear to be fine and there contains are OK.
Has anyone encounted this issue before or have any suggestions? I tried going back to the backups I made before I reset the /etc/swupd and /var/db/swupd folders but I have the same issue.
    Regards Chris.

Does anyone here have a crystal ball?  I can't answer it anymore than the next person.  I'd ask it in the Snow Leopard Server forum after the release date.  This is a user to user forum.

  • Will Snow Leopard (x64) allow my iMac to address more than 4 GB of RAM?

I just finished reading the specs on Snow Leopard and it's early release this Friday. Will the ability to address more than 4 GB of physical RAM work on all supported platforms, or just new systems? I'm maxed with 4 GB now, but would love to turn up the power!

Since your question is about a MacBook Pro, and this topic is in the Intel iMac category, you should go to the relevant forum, in this case probably this one
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1293
and click the +Post New Topic+ link to create your own topic where other MacBook Pro users are likely to see it.
My guess would be that it makes no difference, because these overall RAM limits are based on hardware limitations, not OS limitations. A Mac Pro was able to access 32GB of RAM back when Mac OS X was Tiger (two revisions ago), because its more advanced CPU and hardware architecture made it possible (not the OS).

  • Snow Leopard Server update to OS X Lion (not server)

I have a machine running Snow Leopard Server, and I will like to migrate the same to OS X Lion whenever it is available during the month of July.
Will it be possible to update a Server system (SL) into a plain OS X Lion? I don't use the Server features in the current install of Snow Leopard Server, therefore I don't care if any configurations regarding server are lost.
What I will like to keep is mainly installed applications and configurations.

  • When MBP Snow Leopard pre-installed

    Hello,
I will be buying my very first mac. I am going to buy 17inch MBP. Apple announced that Snow Leopard is going to be released around September. Do you know when Apple will release MBP with Snow Leopard preinstalled? Perhaps September or maybe a bit sooner? By then, do you think MBP will have some upgrade again?
    Thanks

    Why wait?
If you buy a Mac now, you'll be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard for only $9,95 when it is released:

First off you need to know the model identifier of the machine, not all Mac's can be reverted to Snow Leopard and not all Mac's can use the 10.6.3 Retail disk!
To find the model identifier, boot the machine up and hold the command key and the spacebar, Spotlight appears at the top right corner and type in System Profiler and press Enter/Return.
The model identifier should be something like "MacBook Pro 9,2" or something of that nature.
You also can hold D while the computer is booting on/near a Internet connection for a long time and this loads Hardware Test, which one of the panes will give the required information.
Next you download MacTracker here and look up your machine and it's original operating system.
(Don't click the AppStore version obviously)
    http://mactracker.ca/
You may have to right or control click on the program to bypass Apple's Gatekeeper and run the program.
If you have the model identifier and the machine won't boot, then just ask here and we can tell you the information
Now all Intel Mac's issued before July 2011 can install Snow Leopard, but the Mac's released after July 2011 came with OS X 10.7 Lion and the firmware won't boot off the Snow Leopard disk. (however 10.6 can be shoehorned on using Firewire Target Disk Mode and another Mac for some models after July 2011)
Also the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Retail Disk sold at Apple only works on Mac's that came with 10.4-10.6.2 from the factory.
Any Mac's that originally came with 10.6.3-10.6.8 from the factory need model specific disks from Apple directly, not sold at their online store, you will have to call them with your Mac's serial number and order these disks.
If you get the right disk and have the right machine, then you should be able to insert the disk and hold c down or the option/alt key and boot from the 10.6 disk.
Follow these directions and make sure to erase the ENTIRE DRIVE first in Disk Utility or you will have issues later trying to fix it from the disk.

  • Where did my Snow Leopard go?

I installed Snow Leopard when it was first released but my computer says it's running 10.5.8. Is that Snow Leopard?
I ask because I want to install the new update but it requires 10.6.2..

There is no way for Snow Leopard to revert back to Leopard. Either you did not install Snow Leopard or you have more than one startup volume & one with Leopard installed has not been upgraded & you are starting up with that.
What does your Snow Leopard installer disc look like? Is it white or gray? What does its label say?

  • I need to upgrade Snow Leopard to get icloud before my mobileme expires at the end of June.  If I buy Lion, will I be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion free when it comes out?  When is MLion going to be released in UK?

I am running Snow Leopard and have a Mobile Me account.  My Mobile Me account expires at the end of June.  I have been told that I will need to buy the Lion upgrade to run icloud on my imac, but I am aware that Lion is due to be replaced by Mountain Lion this summer.  I don't want to have to buy two up grades!  Will Mountain Lion be released before my mobile me account expires?  If not and I buy the Lion upgrade, will I be able to upgrade it to Mountain Lion, free, in view of the fact that I will only have had Lion for a very short time and could not avoid this purchase??????

    HI...
We have no way of knowing exactly when Mountain Lion will be released. Most likely, if you upgrade to Lion now you'll be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but the actual minimum requirements are unknown at this time.
Lion is only $29.99 plus any applicable taxes and fees and available from the App Store, or you can purchase the thumb drive > OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.

  • How long will Apple continue to release patches for Snow Leopard?

Now that Mountain Lion has been released, how long will Apple continue to support Snow Leopard with patches?

I think the support has already stopped for 10.6.8 if past practice is anything to go on.*
Past observation suggests Apple supports the current and the preceding OS.
On the  25th of July, 2012** it became no longer the preceding but relegated to 'bronze'.
    * exceptions have been known but are rare.

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard yesterday, twice I've been unable to get my screen saver to release back to my working desktop. Anybody else have this issue?

For a few users, since some point in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, there has been an occasional problem when trying to wake from sleep if you have Bluetooth enabled for the keyboard, Magic Mouse, Trackpad, etc.
The solution for me that worked 100% of the time was: System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.
For me, the problem ran intermittently through 10.6.something, all of 10.7 and now, finally, seems to be resolved in 10.8.2.

  • Snow Leopard released this Friday (28th August)!!!

Ok, so it's finally here... who dares?! I'm tempted on my Macbook as I've got nothing to lose really, but I need to be sure that Logic 9 is still going to run as I do some mobile recording with it. I wonder if we'll also see a Logic 9.01 update to go with it? I'm very curious I must admit.
What will we need to be careful of? Interface drivers? 3rd party updates?

Facts from my test during beta:
1- Logic won't come out in 64bit as the audio drivers are not 64 bit yet, neither are any of the available plugins. So forget that until the vendors follow.
2- Logic 8 and 9 on Snow Leopard runs very very fast, much faster than now, a joy to use.
3- A few of the plugin vendors I tested didn't play well under Snow Leopard, it's not fair for me to say which right now because they may have a fix coming after the release of SL.
4- The thing to be careful and mindful of is well... everything. Install Snow on a new partition, have it transfer your settings over from the partition you have Leopard on, and then reboot. You'll have everything working in no time, and you'll find out very quickly if things are OK or not.
Like I said, some plugs don't work. I can confirm what I know works:
UAD2, Liquid Mix and Apogee Symphony drivers. FXPansion BFD2 and DCAM. DUY plugs (all of them). Waves SSL 4000. iZotope Ozone, Trash, Spectrum and RX. Melodyne 3.2.x plugin and App.
Your mileage may vary, don't run it on a production system yet. Period.

Will we see a pre-release forum for Snow Leopard? A few questions are starting to surface in the Leopard forums.

Alessandro ~ Many people must have already successfully installed a beta on a MacBook with Intel Processor and 2 Gb Ram — otherwise Apple wouldn't be releasing Snow Leopard on Friday. Since your Mac appears to meet the general requirements, what exactly is your concern?
By the way, here's a list of applications and their compatibilty status with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — the site may be slow to load:
