So what's so bad about servercache?

Excuse how brief this post is, the forum decided to boot me
out mid posting and I lost everything I had written. Long story
short, why does the API reference say it's "bad" to use
type='servercache' with the <cfcache> tag?

I was just curious since there was no explanation behind the
warning. I'm working on a very slow server that hosts a very big
website, and it likes to time out during anything more complicated
than a simple query. I've been using my own caching routines using
wddx but cfcache looks attractive as a one size fits all solution.
I'm more interested in the server side caching because the problems
occur when users try to access the server when it's already bogged
down and it times out. With things cached thanks to previous
visitors things just pop right into place.

    What's so bad about iPod Linux. I am thinking of getting it but it doesn't support Nano but I will risk it anyway. Before I do please explain to me why everyone on this forum despises it.

    I would strongly recommend to stay clear of Linux for the iPod, for the following reasons.
    1) iPod Linux voids the Apple warranty, so if anything went wrong (which frequently happens), you would have to fork out to get a repair/new iPod.
    2) Linux makes the iPod run totally differently than it used to, i.e basically making it not an iPod, but a small Linux. As Chris CA stated, "you can fill your car up with water, but it still isnt a hot-tub."
    3) Many users have reported "bricking" their iPod after installation, leaving them with a rather expensive paperweight that Apple will not touch.
    4) The Linux website also states that even they do not support Nano installations.
    5) Videos shown through Linux on a Nano are very poor quality, since its extremely difficult to get a video file small enough to fit, the screen size is tiny etc.
    6) If something went wrong, no support could be given on this forum, as it is against the Terms of Use.

    I'm feeling a bit Push-Shopped to buy a new computer here. . . apparently Firefox's recent upgrades don't work best on a G4 Power PC chip.
    So the solution is to run the old Firefox or find a more accomodating browser!
    My minimac works perfectly, runs well and does even more than I ask, or need, it to do! Buying new hardware seems the extreme solution here.
    So what's bad about running the older Firefox version?

    Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:

    But there is a workaround!
    Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
    Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
    Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
    I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine.

  • General Question: What is so bad about public members?

    In many books the authors mention that using public member variables is generally a bad idea and that getter and setter methods should be used instead.
    I don't see the advantage in this. As long as the getter and setter methods don't do anything else than return and set the value of an variable, how can it be better to access them by methods instead of directly accessing the field? Using methods means always more code to write.
    Can anyone explain me what's the advantages of getter and setter methods?
    Some code to illustrate what I mean:

    Both of those have a certain place and are certainly appropriate for some objects (and some designs.) The DTO pattern no longer requires that. Probably for the same reason that I stopped doing the same thing years ago - it is inconvenient and doesn't pay off in terms of maintenance. Sometimes it actually does help, but most of the time it doesn't. And because of that the extra code gets in the way.
    My usual pattern these days is to make the attributes public and also provide convienence methods which might consist of any or all of the following...

    - toString(), used for log/trace
    - Validation method (usually a single method) that does the following...

    Notice that the above does not require any interaction with other signficant objects. And the above also exist solely as convenienence methods that could just as easily be placed in another helper class.
    An example of what a DTO should not do is when a customer DTO verifies the account number exists when the account number field is set. This could certainly be a required validation test. But such a validation requires a level of complexity that exceeds the intent of a DTO.
    I don't think it ever comes down to getters/setters
    the only way OR the source of all evil. Each case has
    to be judged on its own merits. The important thing
    is to understand both sides of the issue and to be
    aware of the consequences.
    Except for the case I made above - although I didn't explain it well enough.
    If most of the classes in the system have getters and setters then one of two things is true.
    - They are not being used, so they shouldn't exist.
    - They are being used, so something is wrong with the design.

  • What should I do about my Macbook Pro?

    I have several issues with my MacBook Pro two years ago (some which I've had since I got it, however due to my busy work/part-time college schedule I haven't had the opportunity to get them fixed).
    1) When I got my MBP I had nasty denting on the top corners of the laptop near the screen hinges (the screen was intact but the base laptop was not) and because of this there are big protruding dents coming out of the laptop above the DVI port and the MagSafe power port, and a small bump above laptop open screen button (The thing in the front that allows you to open the screen when it's shut). There is also a small open gap in the top right corner above DVI slot where you can see into the case (large enough to stick your thumbnail in with a lot of wiggle room). Because of this I've had to avoid using a second monitor at work when possible, when I can't, I've had to push down on the dent to have the DVI connector go in all the way.
    2) I suspect this is because the case is dented in, but the several screws on the outside of the case keep slowly coming out and I HAVE to screw them in once every two to three weeks otherwise I fear they may come out completely.
    3) Another problem I suspect might have to do with the case being damaged is the DVD drive is screwy. I have yet to burn more a few CDs on the thing, but at least when I try to play CDs/DVDs I've had massive problems with them reading properly. I rarely ever used the drive, but for my birthday this past July my friend gave me the first season of Battlestar Galactica on DVD (brand new factory sealed discs that were scratch free) and whenever I try to put it into my DVD drive even before DVD Player comes up, it ejects the DVD. I had to put it back in no less then a dozen times for some of those discs to stay in. When they did work, they would randomly skip while playing saying that there was an error while reading the discs. Also whenever I would pause and walk away for a while, just to come back and hit play again, the issue would come up again. (Note I tested the DVDs on several other laptops and DVD players and they worked perfectly fine, even in the problematic areas that my laptop said the disc had and they worked perfectly fine)
    4) I recently was told about a heating issue with MBPs and I've found out that my laptop runs significantly hotter then others I've read about online (can someone please confirm this for me). While IDLE and the only things running in the background are:
    -I have Dashboard permanently turned off
    -iStat Menu Bar (for processor and network monitoring only)
    -PeerGuardian
    -GMail Notifier
    -Adium
    -You Control:tunes
    -SMC Fan Controller (set to 3600RPM for both fans at minimum at all times)
    -Wifi is turned off, plugged into Ethernet
    -power plugged into the wall with brick sitting on the ground'
    -Nothing else is plugged into firewire/usb slots
    My laptop temperature runs at 124F ~ 127F. It's to my understanding that the average IDLE temperate at the default fanspeed of 2000RPM is around 100F (plus or minus 10F). When I try to run things such as Firefox or have other thing plugged in, the temperature stays between 127F ~ 130F. (And when I put it on my lap it rarely stays below 130F). If I run Adobe Illustrator CS3 and just have it open to a blank new file, and let it sit, the temperature spikes above 130F (I had to uninstall due to this issue, so I don't know the exact temperature), causing the fans to auto increase to combat the increased temperature.
    5) The screen has several problems:
    a) There are random black splotches all over the top portion of it, they were not there when I originally purchased the laptop. However over time, they grew larger and in two other areas. I've heard to this problem being called uneven lighting.
    b) There's this weird spot in the middle of the screen where I randomly see a big thin red tinted splotch. At first I thought it was in my head, but while I was browsing a website with a black/gray background, it came up quite clearly (I took a screen shot of the website so I have something to reference).
    c) When the lights are completely out, no matter what brightness setting my laptop is on, outside of no back light at all, after about 5 seconds or so, the screen tents to flicker in brightness. The dimmer the light setting, the less erratic the flicker, but it still happens even on the lowest setting. (I tried putting small books over my speakers where I suspect the ambient light sensors are, but that doesn't fix the situation either.)
    I still have 1 year or so left on my Apple Care, I'm just wondering what I should do about getting my MBP fixed or if I should just ask for a new one, or anything else that you might recommend.

    Hi. It seems like you have quite a few different sources of problems.
    1) I have had similar dents coming out of the bottom case. I was able to restore most of the ones (like the one above the latch button in the front) by just opening it up and pinching it with pliers. However, if your case is really beat up like mine you might want a new bottom case. If Apple isn't convinced this is part of your AppleCare warranty then they will charge heaps for it, but you can also get one off eBay. Thing is, you'll have to have a very good idea of what you're doing to be able to replace it yourself. There are very good guides for this here, to see if you would be capable of performing the replacement:

    2) I think you're probably right.
    3) You could try a lens cleaner CD. It does seem like the superdrive is damaged though, but I don't think it's due to a dented case. Does it make a loud noise when the disc is spinning? If not, it might have been damaged at the moment you dented your case, but replacing the case might not fix the problem with your drive. Instead of replacing it, you might want to consider getting a faster external one instead.
    4) That does seem a bit hotter than usual, considering your fan speed. I can't help you here because I don't know what could cause this, although maybe your dented case is obstructing airflow somewhere but that's a bit unlikely.
    5. a) This indeed has to do with your lighting. You might need to replace the entire display if you can't replace just the backlight.
    b) Did you take the screenshot using a camera, or internally on the macbook? If you used the macbook, did the red splotch turn up on the screenshot?
    c) This could have to do with the lighting as well seeing as its already bad, if not it might still be the sensors.
    Because of the many different problems, Apple might have to replace most of the internals (and the case) of your macbook. If Apple finds that that's not cost effective, they might give you a replacement instead. You can try to ask for one, but I can't say whether or not you will get one.

  • What can i do about my quickly dying ipod and what is the problem?

    I bought my ipod touch 4th gen 32gb about 10 months ago in 2011 on December, after about 6 months since i bought it the battery started to last for shorter times. Now ( after 10 months today is 20th of september 2012) it really doesnt last for very long at all. After i fully charge it and play a game and do other stuff aswell it sometimes only lasts for 1 and a half to 2 hours only. It also charges very quickly now. I use both my laptop and the belkin ipod charger to charge it i use the cable that came with the ipod and sometimes use it with a usb extender. I also sometimes use the ipod while it is charging. I also sometimes take it out of charging before it is finished but i don't do this very much because i heard it was bad for the battery.
    My question is what can i do about this problem and what might apple be able to do. i want to know how to increase the battery life. And i also want to know is there something i am doing wrong during my charging process or something. I don't to do any of that stuff like taking the back of the ipod off or jailbreaking it, i don't want to stuff the ipod up and i want to keep it like a real ipod. Please help i really want to keep my ipod in good condition so please help if you can

         So my iPod Touch battery is like this too..except worse.  I can't take mine off the charger considering it will die in less than a minute. I recently posted a question like this too so if I get any feedback, i'll let u know.  Stay in there & dont charge it unless it's COMPLETELY dead (not to were it turns off, but to were it's telling you "20% Battery Remaining), and don't take it off the charger unless it's COMPLETELY charged.     i use napster to discover new music. if i really like it, i track down the CD. 28k wma's or mp3s or whatever sound pretty bad. you're not right about them sounding like cassettes. i think you are forgetting just how bad cassettes sound. most 28k's i've heard sound better then cassettes, but paying $9.99 for 28k tracks....NO WAY. $3 for 28ks? sure the upside of 28ks over cassettes tho is the fact that you can transfer the files around from player to player and mp3s dont get stretched out in the sun :smileyvery-happy:

    So what does it mean? And what can be done about it? I really, really loathe restoring because the software is so appalling bad that every app location as to be reassigned and rebuilt. It always ends up being hours of work, but I have to say the new iOS is very junky.

    The reason why JJ asked what "something" is, is because a smart object means something different to a shape layer, a converted layer, a camera raw image, a movie animation, 3D object, etc. And therefore converting one way and back changes on its type with some of them very difficult or not able to reverse.
    Example: A layer can be converted to a smart object by right clicking on its layer and selecting smart object in the menu, at this point most filters can be used in a non-destructive way, in that it is very easy to edit the filter later on. This layer can then be rasterized by using the same menu, which renders that layer as a bitmap image, anything that was in that layer is no longer editible in the sense of quick editing, for example text would be just an image not live text.
    If you merge the layers or flatten the layers, the same thing happens, all the layers become a single bitmap layer. Howerver if some of the layers are hidden or certain layers are selected, then other merge options are available, such as the ability to merge only visible layers or merge selected layers and leave the rest alone.

    When i first purchased BB i looked up to it as i heard all the good stuff about it and was really happy about actually getting one.
    However, now after using this for a year i am very disappointed with Blackberry in general and would like to voice this out on behalf not only of myself but also over a dozen of my friends that are extremely frustrated with BB so far.
    I am using BB 9520 Vodafone and there is a major lack of support from BB in terms of fixing present pressing issues. I have all the latest updates and versions installed via desktop software provided.
    Firstly,
    Why is there no new OS for BB 9520? All the other models have OS 6.0 while 9520 is still running on 5? OS 5 is far from perfect for 9520.
    Secondly,
    Touchscreen issue. Occasionally the screen refuses to respond to any pressing, no matter what and where you press on the screen it does one and one thing only - exits to home screen, the only way to overcome this - have to spam the menu button about 20-30 times to get the screen to respond again.
    Thirdly,
    There is a constant issue with BBM - occasionally after receiving a BBM msg from someone you are unable to open the chat at all, even if you delete the chat you are still unable to BBM that individual, the only way to overcome it - reboot the phone.
    Fourthly,
    Hang up / answer call buttons refusing to work occasionally, this really isn't funny when you're receiving an important business call and listening to your phone ring in your face while spamming the answer button or the touchscreen answer button to no avail until the call ends, the only way to overcome this issue is once again after you've missed the call spam the menu button until the keys decide to start functioning again.
    Fifth,
    Unbelievable, this issue has been reported first time nearly 3 years ago and until today there is no fix from BB?!?!?!?!? Sync with gmail. When you sync with gmail all your contacts are no longer "all" contacts, they are now contacts in "[email protected]" contact list. The best part is - if you change your gmail account or wish to sync with another account - you can't move those "[email protected]" contact list - the new sync is a new contact list.
    Right now i have my contact list in a state that  i can no longer comprehend - sync is on for the new email account and all my contacts are in that email's contact list, however, BB refuses to sync them and the option in the contact list properties is "not available", while in the email settings - it's all turned on and looking good... The lengthy solution that BB presented via wiping the phone is .... wiping the phone? Seriously?
    Sixth,
    Reception, full bar drops to zero in a split second any time
    Seventh,
    Videos recorded are apparently in "unrecognized format" once in a while
    The list goes on.
    This model has been out in the market for a long enough time for any company to hotfix the issues, what is BB doing about this? From the RESULT that i have seen in the last year - nothing.
    This isn't my personal issue - if you would like to check around it is nearly impossible to sell off this phone to even a second hand shop, they won't offer you more than 30-50 USD for this model for the simple fact - it is this bad and everyone knows it.
    As much as i would like to keep my faith in BB - i am beyond disappointed now and have no choice but to switch to either android or iphone simply because this is the only model from BB that has big touchscreen without wasting space for those tiny keys.

    9550 I have seen the problembut very rarely. Personally I would pull the
    battey rather than keep hammering at a key.

    Please post back and tell us what version of BB messenger you have installed and what version of device OS you are running.

    It's begging to sound
    like your device may be periodically low on memory. I will attach a link
    at the bottom that will give you some great tips on maximizing your
    memory usage. Four of the most basic and easiest ways to save memory is
    to exit applications correclty. 1) Every program has a
    menu>close>exit option. Users who use the escape key or the red
    key leave applicatons open.
    2) Using a
    media card for storing files. Device memory is flash or dynamic,
    allocated where needed. Using device memory  to store files means you
    have less dynamic memory to allocate and have perfomance issues as a
    result. 3) Make a daily habit of cleaning the browser cache
    surpising
    how many users don't ever do this. 4) I recommend highly a battery pull
    at least once a  day. It's simply the best way to reset the device.

    I didn't wipe my device I
    deleted the contacts data base and did a one way sync from Outlook to
    the device. I'll see if I can find a couple of post on it. I found a
    "down and dirty" workaround before i learned how to prevent it. You can
    set your Gmail account to you can "point" to group that you want to sync
    contacts with. You then wittle away with some filters to narrow it
    down. I have 2 Gmail accounts by using the groups and filters all they
    looked for was each other!

    think it's the nature of the beast, not much to do there.

    isn't just knickname, it's a condtion! The reason the 9550 is perfect
    for me is I can see the screen and the keyboard clearly. Have you seen
    the ads for the Monaco (Storm 3)? Looks pretty promising bigger screen,
    faster processor running OS 6.0. and maybe the trackpad will  fall off in the design phase.

    Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
    There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
    If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
    Run Rember first... call back with results.

    My rue la la app for ipad stopped working. I deleted the app and tried to reinstall it,  it is no longer available in the app store and when I research it on safari and find it when i try to install it says that it is not available in the us store. What is that all about?

    My app did the exact same thing. It is still unavailable on the App Store and when Rue La La's site directs you to download their app, the "not available in the U.S. message appears. This happened to me last night. The app wasn't working, I deleted it and was just going to reinstall but was unable to find the app. I figured it was some glitch but I have tried multiple times this afternoon to no avail.

    Hi I am very pleased i can now use the iCloud as it was originally intended to do, as regards saving/loading to the iCloud in all iWork Apps
    However one of the options that is in the Save/Load menu tells me that i can use WEB Dav, this doesnt seem to be very well explained as to how i can get it and use it.
    I made enquiries at a couple of Web Space Hosts that i pay to use, they dont want anything to do with WEB Dav. one of them suggested use DropBox, but didnt explain HOW !!!
    So what is so terrible about the idea of WEB Dav and why dont the people who could set it up for there customers, obviously DON'T  ?

    WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to HTTP/1.1.
    The main difference from FTP as far as I can see is that it allows you to edit documents on a remote web server.
    WebDAV was used by the Apple server - MobileMe but is not generally supported by hosting services.
    Using WebDAV you can mount a directory locally. This was how iDisk worked on your Mac and you could drag files onto it to upload them to the remote directory.
    With WebDAV, a number of users can share a directory which is why its used in local networks but presents security problems when using a remote server.
    If you are into file sharing rather than publishing, Dropbox or its new rival SugarSync are more appropriate.

    The system seems sluggish, as well. I can't find anything in help that describes what this is all about.

    Are you using the Select tool when trying to click on clips?  Might try hitting "A" on the keyboard just to be sure.
