SOAP service vs HTTP Service

Hi All,
What is the main advantage of using a SOAP service over an HTTP service?
regrds,
Piyush

Hi Olivier,
Finally I couldn't resist on commenting on your initial response:
A SOAP service is an HTTP service.
This is a bit misleading as the correct phrase in my opinion would be <em>a SOAP service can be implemented using an HTTP binding</em>. The SOAP specification lists the requirements for a binding, e.g. see in version [1.2|http://www.w3.org/TR/soap12] section [4. SOAP Protocol Binding Framework|http://www.w3.org/TR/2007/REC-soap12-part1-20070427/#transpbindframew]. Other bindings are possible, e.g. [SOAP over smtp/e-mail|http://www.w3.org/TR/2002/NOTE-soap12-email-20020703]. Admittedly though, probably almost everybody just uses SOAP over http...
@Kaleem: I'd rephrase also your comment and say that <em>http is a flavor of a SOAP binding</em>.
Sorry for nitpicking...
Cheers, harald

  • OWSM 10.1.3.4 and Non-SOAP XML-based web service

    Hi all,
    According to the OWSM 10.1.3.4 Administrator's Guide, "all Web services registered with an Oracle WSM Gateway are virtualized as both a SOAP and non-SOAP Web service." To access the non-SOAP (XML-only) web service, the documentation states "The non-SOAP virtualized URL can be determined from the virtualized SOAP URL by replacing the services keyword in the URL with the xml keyword."
    For example, if the SOAP virtualized endpoint is:
    http://host:port/gateway/services/SID0003001
    then, the non-SOAP XML service endpoint is:
    http://host:port/gateway/xml/SID0003001
    I have several web services registered with an OWSM gateway, running on SOA Suite 10.1.3.4, and can access those without any problem. However, when I attempt to access the "/gateway/xml" version of these services, I simply get an HTTP 200 response header with a null body.
    Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or what the secret is to get the non-SOAP XML service feature of OWSM to work?
    Thanks!

  • WSIF Binding Error while invoking HTTP Service

    Hi,
    I am getting a WSIF binding error when invoking an HTTP service. I was able to successfully invoke another HTTP service on the same server. However, while invoking some of the others services, we are getting errors. The wsdl binding declaration is:
    <binding name="JACADACustMaintBinding" type="tns:JACADACustMaintPortType">
    <http:binding verb="POST"/>
    <operation name="PostData">
    <http:operation location="/custmaint.cfg"/>
    <input>
    <mime:mimeXml part="CustMaintInput"/>
    <mime:content type="text/xml"/>
    </input>
    <output>
    <mime:mimeXml part="CustMaintOutput"/>
    <mime:content type="text/xml"/>
    </output>
    </operation>
    </binding>
    The error we are getting is as follows:

    Hi,
    Using the exact same wsdl i was able to get a response from the HTTP service using OSB. I created a business service targeting this wsdl. Then created a proxy service to route the xml to the business service.
    I was able to successfully invoke and get response from the HTTP service without making any change to the wsdl.
    Could this be a bug in BPEL PM? Should I raise an SR?

  • Calling a business service based on operation-soap action in Proxy service

    Hi,
    I have a requirement in which I have to call a business service based on operation-soap action defined in Proxy service wsdl.
    Like in below mentioned wsdl GetPartCostDelta and GetCurrencyList operations are there.But which ever operation I select,It just goes to one business service.
    Is there any way,I can route to some another business service based on the soap action

              </wsdl:port>
         </wsdl:service>
    </wsdl:definitions>

    Did you try using the Operational branching node of OSB?
    You have copy the operation name from the inbound variable and populate the SOAP Header with that value into the SOAPAction tag.I think this will work.

    Hi,
    First create wallet. Place files to server folder and then configure your Apex instance.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21678/adm_mg_service_set.htm#sthref264
    Then you should be able consume HTTPS web services

  • Error calling external web service over HTTPS

    Hi everyone
    I'm trying to call an external web service over HTTPS, and continually get the following error:
    com.sap.engine.services.webservices.espbase.wsdl.exceptions.WSDLException: Peer sent alert: Alert Fatal: handshake failure
    I haven't tried doing this before, so not quite sure where to start. I have a client certificate that must be used to access the remote web service, and I think the problem is associating the client cert with the web service call.
    Has anyone else tried this before? Any suggestions of where to look?
    I've had a brief look at Key Storage in NWA, but it's not something I'm familiar with - so not sure if it's even the right place to be looking.
    Some help on this would be great!
    Thanks
    Stuart

    Thanks Aleksandar
    Here's the output from the trace. Unfortunately the SAP forums don't allow attachments, so it may be difficult to read. Please let me know if you see anything that may help.
    Thanks
    Stuart

  • Soap Router versus Web Service Servlet

    Hello:
    I am trying to understand the fundamental difference between a SOAP Router versus
    Web Service Servlet?. In websphere there is a concept called WSG(Web Service
    Gateway) on which we can configure an handler to intercept the incoming soap requests.
    But in weblogic I do not think we can configure any handler on Web Service Servlet.
    So I think for this very purpose you have this soap router right ?. If this is
    correct then does the soap router will forward the call to the Web Service Servlet
    which implements the soap engine.
    Please clarify,
    Thanks,
    Vijay

    Hello,
    Right, today there is not a global handler that can be configured;
    however you can do servlet filter or check out an early access SOAP
    Router[1] from Manoj.
    Could you give us a snapshot of your use case?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Custom WS Policy with Service account in OSB while invoking a https service

    Hi,
    I need your help on one of my issue in invoking an https service from OSB. I read through various posting and tried the below steps in this forum
    -Added the certificate for the https site to soa domain
    -Registered the https webservice as a Business service
    -Registerd a proxy service on top of this Business service
    -In the service call out on Proxy service I did a replace operation on the entire soap header with the below string
    <soapenv:Header xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    <wsse:Security soapenv:mustUnderstand="1" xmlns:wsse="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-secext-1.0.xsd">
         <wsse:UsernameToken wsu:Id="UsernameToken-4" xmlns:wsu="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-utility-1.0.xsd">
              <wsse:Username>sysuser@yahoo</wsse:Username>
              <wsse:Password Type="http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-username-token-profile-1.0#PasswordText">ABIHAIKLPLKLPMLERLER</wsse:Password>
         </wsse:UsernameToken>
    </wsse:Security>
    </soapenv:Header>
    -After doing all the above steps my call out worked from the test console, If you see closely the userid(sysuser@yahoo) and password(ABIHAIKLPLKLPMLERLER) is hard coded here.
    I need a way to mask the credentials and have the user pass them when they invoke the proxy service. I read through some posting and it was listed that we can create a custom policy and attach that custom policy to the Business service. But my problem here is the userid has an extra char @, so I wasn't able to create the user account with those credentials in OSB, but I was able to create the userid and password using a service account. Iam not sure how I can use this service account along with the custom policy.
    Can you please provide me a suitable approach, which will solve my issue. I appreciate your time and help
    Thanks
    Jagan.

    Hi,
    Below are the steps followed
    - OSB Proxy service has 'oracle/wss_username_token_service_policy' attached to it.
    - Iam invoking this from BPEL. BPEL process has 'oracle/wss_username_token_client_policy' attached.
    - I can invoke the osb proxy from bpel by passing credentials - No Issues.
    Now I need to put some authorization restriction to the proxy service, so only specific users can access that.
    -I used Role=Admin as a policy condition restriction under security in Proxy service.
    -Then I went to proxy test console and I added the 'oracle/wss_username_token_client_policy' credentials and weblogic/xxxxx at Transport section and I was able to invoke the process. Here weblogic has a Admin Role.
    -I cannot invoke the same proxy service from BPEL in Jdeveloper now.
    All Iam trying to do is to protect my proxy by authrorization policy.
    Thanks
    Jagan.

  • Problem Creating a HTTP Service in SOAMANAGER

    Hi all,
    I am having difficulty in setting up a HTTP Service in SOAMANAGER.
    I have generated the Enterprise Service - Service Definition Succesfully in SAP from a RFC Enabled Function Group( this is working fine).
    I then go into SOAMANAGER -> Single Service Administration -> Select the Service -> Select the Configurations Tab -> Create Service
    The problem I have is that when this comes up under the
    Provider Security Tab -> Transport Guarantee -> Communication Security
    I do not have a radiobutton for "None" (this is what I want to select to create a HTTP service.)
    I have the options
    - SSL over HTTP (Transport Channel Security)
    - Asymmetric Message/Signature / Encryption
    - Symmetric Message/Signature Encryption
    Secure Conversation
    If you see William Li's blog /people/william.li/blog/2010/02/15/how-to-avoid-authentication-when-accessing-ws-provider-service you item 3.6 shows how the screen is supposed to look (with the additional option of "None" as the first radiobutton).
    My current workaround is to define the service and then go into SICF, select the service and change the Security Requirement from SSL to Standard on the Logon Data Tab. Although this works it is not the ideal solution.
    I'm wondering if there is something we are missing in our soap run time, perhaps a configuration setting we need to set in srt_admin. (I believe this option was there before we did a service pack upgrade)
    Has anyone experienced this before?

    Hi John,
    I've experimented something like that before. I think solution was:
    - Search the webservice in SE80, Repository Information System -> Enterprese Services
    - Enter the service definition
    - Go to 'Configuration' tab
    - Click on 'Transport Security'/'Authentication'
    - In profile setting, switch it for 'Low' or 'None'
    I believe this will turn available the option you're looking for.
    Kind regards,
    Garcia

  • Http Service : Help required in displaying result

    Hi All,
    I have created a http service and i'm trying to post the http request. the result is Successful but i'm not able to  display the result in the alert window.
    This is what I'm trying to do on the result event handler function.
    protected function postRequestResult_resultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void
         var srt:String = event.result.nodeValue;
         Alert.show(srt , "Result");
    but I'm getting an output something like [object object ]
    Please help. All I need is to do is, display the complete soap envelop ( soap header and body ) present in the result.
    Is there a way to do it ?
    Thanks and regards,
    adewrn

    Hi,
    Thanks for all your replies. I was able to solve it by making the resultFormat property of http service object as text, This returned the entire result as a string. And i was able to display it.

  • Synchronous BPEL process calling apache soap 2.3.1 service(s) on jboss

    I have a problem that is quite frustratiing. I have a very simple synchronous BPEL process and I am trying to invoke some legacy services we have deployed using Apache soap 2.3.1 running on jboss. The process executes, the service executes, but the return value is not received by the BPEL process.
    I used obtunnel to capture the data flow and everything seems fine from that perspective. The problem is, if you watch the monitor, the status says active, but the BPEL process returns immediately. It does not wait for the response, so the return value winds up being null. I have tried this numerous times with several services and the result is always the same. This is a serious problem for us. Any suggestions/insight would be very much appreciated.
    Ina case there are any doubts as to whether or not it is actually a synchronous process, from the BPEL code:

  • Dynamically set the soap address for web services

    Hi,
    I am developing an Oracle J2ee1.3 web service for Oracle application server 10.1.2.
    The web service needs to be deployed on to multiple servers. Hence the host and port for the soap:address needs to be changed for each server.
    Eg: For the 1st server the soap:address is http://www.server1.com/test/MyWebService
    For 2nd server the soap:address is http://www.server2.com/test/MyWebService
    Is there any way to dynamically change this address based on the server the Web Service is deployed to?
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Subashini

    It helps to post a link to a thread when you refer to it.  If you are trying to implement that solution though, you can look at the parameter of the corresponding method being called.  The parameter has type 'SIMPLE' which means that it is compatible with all of the predefined elementary ABAP types.  In this case, you should use 'STRING'.
