Soft returns, xml export

If I want to export text, including soft returns, to xml I get the error that some kind of characters are not recognized.
Is there a way to export soft returns correctly to xml ?
I already posted a similar question, but maybe I was not clear anough, so please accept my appologizes.
Kind Regards,
Droom

Hi Droom,
are you sure that it is this forced line break character that causes the error message?
There are indeed some characters that can not be exported by InDesign's XML export, but as far as I know there are no problems with the forced line break.
Maybe you are using another char like an AutoPageNumber char (0x0018), a SectionMarker char (0x0019) or a right indent tab char(0x0008). These characters can not be exported.
Generally every character that has a hex value lower that 0x0020 (except 0x0009, 0x000A and 0x000D) can not be im- or exported by XML.
Try to create a new document with only one frame, insert a single forced line break and export it. If it works you have to look for another character that causes the problem. If it doesn't work I am mistaken.
Form more info see my approach to import a right indent tab ( http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6dbd5/2 ).
For some information about InDesign characters see: http://www.absatzsetzer.de/downloads/Zeichen.pdf (it is in German, but the table is understandable, I think)

    Hi,
with the new release of indesign there are some change about export structure of xml?
In past I found some problem about special caracters, like   or soft return etc...

  • Soft Returns in Tagged Text

Our Pindar AgilityCMS content managment system flows text to an InDesign page using a special PlugIn.
Some characters are stored natively (store an "a", get an "a" on the page), while other special characters are stored using Tagged Text or Unicode. A return can be either <0x000D> or \u000D. This is especially useful because we can output through one of four "channels".... InDesign, Quark, HTML or as entered in the content manager. The return can now be \p in Quark or <BR> in HTML.  A non-breaking space, for example, can be \u00A0 in the InDesign channel, &nbsp; in HTML or <\!s> in Quark. When we insert the "special character" in the Data Editor of our content system, it might be displayed as [sp], but it will resolve correctly regardless of which channel we publish to.
The problem is that unlike Quark, Adobe does not provide for a "soft return" or forced line break. Sure, you can type one from the keyboard with shift+return, and purists will argue that you'd never want to store a soft (discretionary) return in any type of tagged text or a content management system. However, all our text is set flush left, ragged right, and we frequently want to force line breaks for readability, and do so consistently.
    Instead of:
On Sale Now Buy One, Get
    One Free
    we always want
    On Sale Now
    Buy One, Get One Free
Again, this is a problem whether you store your data in simple tagged text files, or if you bring it in via a complex PlugIn, as we do.
There are many, many threads on this site and elsewhere that discuss this shortcoming. Does Adobe plan to support Soft Returns in Tagged Text with some kind of special tag?

Your question is predicated on some false assumptions, and I'm afraid Peter, Peter, and Stix didn't quite pick that up in their replies. (This gives me pause since normally they're all very detail-oriented).
As I told you when you posted in the thread from 2009, "InDesign Tagged Text supports forced line breaks just fine."
    You write:
Does Adobe plan to support Soft Returns in Tagged Text with some kind of special tag?
Adobe's import mechanism does indeed support soft returns. There's no need to speculate on Adobe's plans, which is the direction the other replies went to.
With that in mind, let's move to your actual question:
Our Pindar AgilityCMS content managment system flows text to an InDesign page using a special PlugIn.
Some characters are stored natively (store an "a", get an "a" on the page), while other special characters are stored using Tagged Text or Unicode. A return can be either <0x000D> or \u000D. I think you need to address this question to your support channel for Pindar AgilityCMS. Indeed, in IDTT <000A> represents a shift-return. Here's a screenshot of a test textframe:
and when exported to InDesign Tagged Text, it produces:
    <ASCII-MAC>
    <Version:7><FeatureSet:InDesign-Roman><ColorTable:=<Black:COLOR:CMYK:Process:0,0,0,1>>
    <DefineParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle=<Nextstyle:NormalParagraphStyle>>
    <ParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle>Paragraph one
    <ParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle>Paragraph two<0x000A>P2/Line two
I presume you have tried <0x000A> as discussed in the prior thread.
I suppose it's remotely possible this is a Mac/PC issue, because the two operating systems do you different line break characters.
Anyhow, once again, your criticism of InDesign and Adobe is false and unfair. And if you have a problem with a 3rd party plugin, those are really the people you need to talk to.
Still, it might be wise to get it working with plain File > Place. Try testing my above IDTT file. Or exporting your own from a sample textframe like the one I used.

  • Soft return in tagged text file

Hi, anyone has example of using a End of line (soft return)  in tagged text file?
i tried using <0x000A> but it does not work. Advice needed.
    Tkz

So it does. It also drops it if you export in GB 18030. I would file a bug report:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
Only workaround I can think of would be to enter some other unique character (maybe |?) and find/replace it in ID after bringing in the tagged text.
    Ken
Hold on, I tried exporting tagged text and then bringing it back in. It's not dropping the forced line break. It's exporting it as a single Line Feed (hex 0a). And it interprets that as a forced line break when importing back in. My text editor ignores Line Feeds. I had to look at it in a hex editor to see the 0a.
I don't know if that helps any. However you're producing the tagged text, you would need to be able to make it enter a line feed without the carriage return.

  • Soft returns not importing

Hi. I recently impoterd a Frame 7.1 Chapter into RoboHelp
HTML 8.0 and everything worked okay with the exception of soft
returns. For some reason it didn't import these and I was left with
large strings of test which I had to fix by hand. Any ideas? Thanks
    in advance

As far as I can tell, this isn't a new bug in as much as InDesign CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS5.5 (Mac) all exhibit the same problem exporting soft-returns in Unicode encoded Tagged Text where they are replaced with hard returns on import. Unfortunately it appears that we may be the only ones that care and thus it's unlikely that Adobe will fix it (unless someone adopts it as a JDI bug).
Update: after testing some more it appears this is an export bug for Mac OS-only. In other words, if you use a PC to export a story that contains soft-returns to Tagged Text (Unicode), the soft-returns are preserved when placing into a document using a Mac. And vice-versa, using a Mac to export a story with soft-returns to Tagged Text (Unicode) and then placing this into a document using a PC exhibits the same substitition of soft-returns for hard-returns.

  • CS3 .indd and .inx file freezes (not responding) in soft returns, copy/paste, across machines

My file first started crashing when I tried to soft-return following an em-dash, en-dash, or hyphen. For a while I worked around this by soft-returning on the line below, typing in the text from above, and backspacing the line above (all to help with typesetting the rag).
I had diagnositics run on my machine at the Genius Bar where they replaced my battery and ran first aid, etc.
Software-wise, I've since tried deleting preferences, etc, in the library. I looked to delete the application support file but didn't find one. I also tried opening the file on a second laptop and it still crashed when I did the items above (returns, copy/paste). I tried exporting to an .inx to clean up the file. However, when I open it (Untitled) and try to save it as an .indd to keep working, the software freezes.
I'm using InDesign CS3 and Mac OS 10.5.8.
I've copied the crash report (from the frozen .inx saving) here: http://pastebin.com/Dq9UCgk1
Thank you in advance for your assistance

As  I don't want to install additional software to measure temparetures I can't tell you about my exact core temperatures. However, I can tell you that my fans go off again when load decreases for some time.

  • Bad Character on XML export

On exporting to xml i get 100s of bad characters. Like below:
The problem is highlighted in yellow. It is a small square not a zero. Any thoughts on how to remove this on XML export...I have no idea where to begin.
    Michael D

    Michael,
If Russ is right (which is quite likely) you will find the code for that character is 13 (aka Carriage Return). You can remove those useless characters by  from FrameMaker documents by MIF washing or simply by searching for \x0D and replacing by nothing.
If not, it is still useful to know which code is behind the character. Any decent text editor has a binary mode which would give you the hex codes.

  • How can i make a soft return with pages shift enter does not work!

how can i make a soft return with pages shift plus enter does not work!!

On full keyboards with a numeric keypad, the key above the right shift is "return" & the one on the numeric section is "enter." On a Mac (or Apple IIgs ) they do have separate functions. On the "mini" keyboards, both names are on the same key, but "enter" is written in smaller letters. I'll have to check to see how that works on another Mac later today.

  • Crystal Report 2008 SP2 & InfoView: Custom XML Export doesnt work

    Hi,
I have created a Crystal Report .rpt and want to use the custom xml export function to output a custom xml file. For that, I created a custom transformation file (xsl) and imported it into the .rpt . On the client machine, if I open the .rpt with Crystal Reports 2008 SP2, and select to export it using the custom xml output, all runs fine. (under SP1, only half the file was created...)
If I upload the .rpt file to Infoview (server-side: BO Enterprise 3.1, SP2 as well) and schedule it, I can select xml, and then my custom xml as output format, but I am getting the error message u201EUngültige Exportoptionen" (="invalid export options"), in the instance history. No output file is created. I use file system as destination. Other output formats like .pdf and .rpt work fine and files are created.
    Ideas:
-Are there any more settings needed on the server (e.g.CMC - Crystal Server Jobs, other Processes, ...) so I can schedule the report and successfully create the custom xml format file as output?
-Do I need to upgrade to a specific SP or FP on server-side so everything runs smooth?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Florian,
I'm having the same problem, have you by any chance found a solution?

  • Soft returns in Pages for iPad

I would really like to create a space between numbered items in Pages but I can't figure out how to do it.  Does anyone know how to create a soft return in Pages for iPad?
I have seen responses for the desktop application but not the iPad application.

    Pages 1.7.1, IOS 5.1.1
You start a bullet item and then press both ⇧ and return keypad keys to force a newline. This turns off the bullet style. Press return. Use the paintbrush toolbar icon to reselect the Bullet paragraph style again. This approach shows the inelegant possibility.
The best approach would be at the end of your bullet text, change your line spacing from 1.0 to 1.25 from within the paintbrush > Layout tab. A return continues your bullet style. If your normal body text has been 1.0 line spacing, you can switch back to that after your list.

              Radha,
We have a client/server package which speaks SOAP over a
streaming HTTP channel for which we are writing a WebLogic
servlet. For reasons of efficiency, we want to deserialize
only the very top-level tags of the messages as they pass
through the servlet. Yes, in theory, we should probably
deserialize and validate the entire message contents...
When we add support for other clients, we will fully
              deserialize inside those servlets.
I have not looked any further into how to stop the inner
tags from being escaped yet -- it is an annoyance more than
a disaster, since the client handle meta escapes.
My current guess is to use ECMAScript mapping...

  • [AS] CS3 Find -Change inserting soft return instead of hard

Can anyone help identify why this script doesn't work? i want it to replace multiple returns with a single paragraph return. It's replacing with a soft return rather than a hard return.
I copied and pasted the find grep and change grep fields into the script. I even tried it by typing "\r" into the change grep field. Any thoughts? Much appreciated!
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    --Clear the find/change preferences.
set find grep preferences to nothing
set change grep preferences to nothing
set find text preferences to nothing
set change text preferences to nothing
    --Set the find options.
set include footnotes of find change grep options to false
set include hidden layers of find change grep options to false
set include locked layers for find of find change grep options to false
set include locked stories for find of find change grep options to false
set include master pages of find change grep options to false
    --delete multiple graphs
set find what of find grep preferences to "~b~b+"
set change to of change grep preferences to "
set myStory to parent story of item 1 of selection
    tell myStory
    set myFoundItems1 to change grep
    end tell
set find grep preferences to nothing
set change grep preferences to nothing
    end tell

Shane, thanks! This worked. What I meant to have written was that when copying "~b" from the find/change field in InDesign and pasting into Script Editor, and saving, it converted it automatically to a hard return. I didn't try it manually because sometimes the obvious is elusive! (to me at least)
    Thanks again.

  • Returning XML Data from a database

Ok, just got the new DW CS3 and really want to begin using
the built in Spry capabilitites. All of the examples I've seen for
populating the datasets with XML data are based on referencing a
static XML file. I want to query my database and return XML data to
a Spry Table. How do I accomplish this? I know how to perform the
query and retrun the data in an XML format (ColdFusion) but I can't
tell the spry dataset to use this. HELP!!

Well, that's the trick... I can't point to a testing server
(i.e. Application interface) because we aren't permitted to have
the RDS login where I work. (They haven't bothered to configure the
CF server for restricting access) I have to manually create all
connections and queries. I'm currenlty using the exact format in
the example page you provided to return the data in an XML format
but when I point to that file as my datasource I get nothing
displayed on the page. The file that performs the query and returns
the data is in a separate file from the one I'm trying to use the
Spry table in. When I use this same query file for an Ajax call to,
say, populate a listbox or pulldown menu it works fine, but I can't
get it to work with the Spry dataset.
