Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at. I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders. Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.

Upgrading to 10.3 or 10.4-software conflicts?

I have a Power PC G4 (Dual 867 MHz Processor). Running Classic 9.2 and OSX 10.2.8. I'm looking at the pros and cons of upgrading to 10.3 or 10.4. And I want to minimize upgrade purchases and conflicts for my existing software.
Any known software conflicts with OS X 10.3 or 10.4 and older Adobe products? I'm using Photoshop 7.0, Illustrator 10. I'm also using Dreamweaver MX 2004, Microsoft Office 2004, Quark Xpress (am upgrading to 6).
Also, what's the best browser and email program to use with 10.3 or 10.4?

Is there a particular reason you need to update? Do you use your computer and software in conjunction with a business or job? In the case of the latter you should never upgrade when you depend upon mission critical software or hardware until you have verified compatibility.
In your case you should contact the individual software developers/companies and inquire about version compatibility with different versions of OS X. Sometimes you can find this out by visiting their respective websites and reading the System Requirements information. You can also use the resources at www.versiontracker.com to find out about OS X version compatibility for your various titles.

Personally if you are planning to upgrade I would upgrade to Tiger because it is current. However, before upgrading I would plan to make a bootable backup of your current system to an external Firewire drive. In case you have any problems or change your mind you can always restore the backup. To make a bootable backup you will need an external Firewire drive equal to or greater in size than your internal hard drive. You wil need to download Carbon Copy Cloner from www.versiontracker.com and install it. Carefully read the documentation for CCC to learn how to use it properly to make a bootable clone. After you make your clone test it by trying to boot the computer with it.
In my opinion the best browsers for OS X are Safari and OmniWeb. The best email application is Entourage (part of Office X 2004) or Power Mail. However, you will not find much consensus on either of these applications. Everyone has their opinion. The best suggestion is try them all out and see which ones you like best. Trial versions can be found at www.versiontracker.com for the shareware or commercial products.

Active Microsoft 365 Office Home account and Skype...

Last month I paid like earlier for my 365 Office Home sofware account and I did not use the extra 60 Skype minutes sofar. If I call via my Skype account, the extra 60 Skype minutes are not active as valid to call someone. Today I called the Microsoft office in the Netherlands and the person I spoke with had no idea how to solve. Try support Skype.com for a solution. My current separate Skype prepaid amount is euro 0,01, which is separated from my Office Home software account extra Skype minutes. Do you as community member have a suggestion how I can get the extra 60 Skype minutes active and valid to call someone after earlier monthly payment of my 365 Office Home software account?

Possible Software Conflict?

This is a bit of a long one so please bare with me.
I use a program called MacFamilyTree (MFT) to build my family tree and have been using it on Leopard and now on Snow Leopard. There is also an App for the iPhone which allows you to sync your tree from MFT to it. All of this worked perfectly under Leopard and I was able to sync to my iPhone every time without fail.
When Snow Leopard was first released I installed it as an upgrade and didn't think anything of it until several weeks later I tried to sync MFT to my iPhone and it failed. MFT is essentially an SQLite database into which you can add photos as well as entering data into the fields etc. When you sync MFT to your iPhone it first creates an optimised (smaller) database and resizes all your images before sending it to the iPhone via Wi-Fi.
Since upgrading to SL when I try to sync MFT to my iPhone it creates the optimised database but the second it then says that it's sending it to my iPhone the following appears in Console:

After that the sync never completes and the file is never updated on my iPhone. MFT also has the ability to publish your tree as a website. If I try and do this when it gets around two thirds of the way through resizing my images the entire program crashes.
Last week I then decided to do a complete re-install of SL from scratch, wiping my drive and doing a fresh install. After doing this and restoring all my data the first program I installed was MFT. Before I did anything else I tried to sync to my iPhone and hey presto it worked! I therefore thought that something must not have been updated correctly when I did the upgrade and that a fresh install had fixed the problem.
Over the next few days I re-installed all my other programs only to find that when I tried to sync MFT to my iPhone a few days ago that it again failed and publishing my tree as a website has gone back to crashing MFT again too!
All the programs I am currently running I was running under Leopard and I was always able to sync.
Since running Snow Leopard it seems that I can only sync if MFT is, potentially, the only other program I have installed.
Therefore I can only conclude that one of my other programs must be interfering with MFT in some way.
I've contacted the company behind MFT and they don't know what the problem is. I really can't face doing another re-install and I can do without uninstalling each program one at a time to see if one of them is the cause (but I will do this if I have to)!
I'm just wondering if there is a way to determine what other program might not like MFT under Snow Leopard but did under Leopard? In case it's needed, here are the programs I have installed:

I'm not in front of my iMac at the moment but it came shipped with 2GB but a couple of months ago I upgraded to the maximum it supported which I'm pretty sure was 3GB (possibly 4GB but certainly no more). As far as I'm aware the largest single image that I've imported into MFT is around 15MB with most being more like 2MB so where 172MB comes from I have no idea!

After Stopping it and Restarting and it is still not reconizing your device Then start uninstalling
Start with: Itunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device.
I had an issue uninstalling Apple Software Update, and was unable to get it off my computer.
But after all that download and reinstall itunes.
After doing all that i was able to get mine to show up in itunes

my canon video camera (HV20) wasnt being recognised by iMovie (error message...in system report was "Unable to list FireWire devices".)
in researching a solution i came across some firewire advice in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1151#trouble which suggests there may be a "software conflict between the device and something in your original user account."
i changed to another account on my iMac and my camera connected immediately.
is anybody able to explain how i go about fixing this "software conflict".

With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.

That is priceless!!! Thanks! I sure needed a good laugh after spending/wasting hours & days trying to either get my c6280 to give up on its Ink System Failure fixation, or find a decent replacement. Unfortunately I need the Smart Web Printing feature that I guess only HP has, or I'd try a different brand. And now even HP has very few models with that available.
My error msg is a little different from those previously stated, but close: 0xc18a0201. Even tho there were frustrations with my c6280, I did like several of its unique features which are hard to find now under $100. I hate how HP (& I suppose other brands also) are CONSTANTLY changing models & then of course ink cartridges.
Oh heavens, I've had the c6280 a whopping 2 1/2 years! I'm sure they want us poor slobs to have to buy a new one every year & a day! To say nothing of the exorbitant prices for ink. And now if this one is really dead in the water, I have SIX unused #02 ink cartridges which I cannot return---I got them in a combo pack, & for some reason have wound up with THREE lite pink & THREE lite blue cartridges, while having to buy extras of the other colors, that ran out before the others!!! Yeah, & what's with that not being able to print in BLACK if a color runs out????
Anyway I really loved your essay! It's a classic! And says it all! I hate that we have to be 'slaves' to the electronic 'wonders'!!!

MacBook Browser not working?: Dongle Software Conflict

I'm posting this to help anyone who may experience the same frustrating problem I've had. My Browser would occassionally stop working and not allow a page to open, for no obvious reason. WiFi settings etc fine. I could'nt find the problem, or anything similar posted on the User forums. I tried everything including clearing the cache settings etc. In search of help I took my MacBook down to my local Apple store who found the solution in a few minutes.
My old "Pay as You Go" Huwaei Dongle (o2 Network) was the cause of the problem. It was creating a software conflict in the Browser settings. Apparently this is a common problem with this type of Dongle. I ironically no longer use the Dongle but it was still registered. I currently use my iPhone 4s as a Dongle tethered to the MacBook when I'm travelling and it works brilliantly. Hope this helps someone else to find a solutoion to a similar problem.

Make sure that you received internet settings correctly from your operator.
In configuration settings make sure that it is activated for all applications.

Software conflict between iPhoto and Sony MP3 player

I am experiencing a major software conflict between iPhoto and my Sony MP3 player (model: NWZ-E443). In the past, whenever I connect the MP3 to my 2009 MacBook Pro, iPhoto always opened. I would simply close iPhoto and everything would be OK, though. But after upgrading iPhoto a few months ago via an upgrade download I am now unable to view images full-screen. Although thumbnails display OK, when I double-click on any of them to display full-screen, the MP3's 'Do Not Disconnect' image displays full-screen instead, even when the MP3 is not connected.
I have tried reinstalling iPhoto from the original iLife disc, but this didn't work and my fear is that the Sony software has somehow corrupted every image single file in my library.

Turns out my Mac put code on the mp3 player because after I reset the mp3 player to its 'factory settings', (erasing everything) it went back to normal and now shows up in the finder window.

FCP 5.03 won't launch/software conflicts with Avid?

I just purchased FCP Studio and a new dual 2.3 G5. Installation ran fine. All other apps open (ie: soundtrack, dvd studio, motion, compressor, etc.).
When I try to open FCP 5.03, it starts to open - anotherwords the rectangular box with FCP and my name and the serial number comes up like it's going to launch, but then the box goes away and no application. The finder then becomes active.
I'm running on and OS 10.4.2 and QT 7.0.1 and would rather not go to 10.4.3 or a higher version of QT as I need this OS and QT for my Avid Xpress application. Plus I do not suspect that the OS or QT version is the problem, as we know FCP has launched on OS 10.4.2 and QT 7.0.1. All other software is up to date.
Possibly there are software conflicts with Avid? The only other software I have installed on this machine is that which was packaged with Avid Xpress Pro v.4.8.1 which is as follows:

I've run 4.5 and Avid Express on the same system. And 5.0.3 (haven't cranked up the Avid software since installing 5.0.3). My first suspect would be some kind of Audio plugin.
Use the Console program to inspect the logs. You might learn something that way. (/Applications/Utilities/Console).

Also is there any way I can change the contact form email for all of my contact forms at once.
I have over 100 contact forms and i want to make them reach the same email anyway I can do that without going one by one?

If you have placed the image in Muse using File > Place and then scaled the image down in Muse while editing, then Muse publishes/exports the scaled down/optimized image in final output. When using as a Fill, the output size depends on the Fitting option you setup in the Fill options.
As for the contact form email, you would need to specify the email address for each form individually. There is no workflow to edit the same for multiple forms at a time.

How to Find Software Conflicts?

After migrating everything from G5 Mac to new Mac Mini, the formatting functions in Mail have not worked (keyboard shortcuts for Bold, Italic, Underline). I have run all software updaters including the recent 10.6.7 combo updater to make sure I have the current versions of everything installed.
I've done several tests:
•In my regular account, reboot into "Safe Mode" (restart with S key down) and Mail works fine. Reboot back into "regular mode," problems with Mail return.
•Create a new "Test Account" and open Mail: In "regular boot mode" Mail has problems; in rebooted "Safe Mode" Mail works fine.
So in either account, Mail works fine when in "Safe Mode," doesn't work correctly in regular mode. So I am assuming there is some software conflict when I am in regular operating mode.
If Mail works fine in Safe Boot Mode, but not in regular mode, how do I go about finding what software is conflicting with Mail? In old OS 9 days, we could restart with extensions and control panels disabled and add them back one at a time to find conflicts. But since working in OSX I have never seen reference to any such process.
(I have also disabled all "Log In" apps so nothing is running when I boot the computer. With no other programs running, Mail misfires -- so I'm assuming it's conflicting with something else.)
Any help on isolating software conflicts would be much appreciated.

There was very little in those folders -- a few files related to old software. I tossed everything, restarting and testing Mail as I went -- made no difference. Only one file left in USER>LIBRARY>LAUNCHAGENTS: [email protected].plist
Now nothing in the other folders.
When I first started working this problem a few days ago, command-I and command-B when composing mail would not work. Now, those two commands will produce italic/bold text when composing mail, but they won't revert to plain text when using keyboard commands (command-i/b). Again, all works normally when in "Save Mode" startup.

Installing software in my vancouver office...

I would like to deploy some software in our vancouver office using Apple Remote Desktop Admin.
I would like to put the install files on their server, and install from there. Is this even possible with ARD? I have ARD running on my mac mini in my office in toronto, but don't want to have to copy the install files to each computer to install.... , I use it to manage the and all the mac's in my vancouver office. I can copy the install files on a local share in the vancouver office, and get the install to run from that location?
just not sure how to do the install from the share...
is there an apple script that I can use to execute the install package and have it do a standard install? ( we can use office 2008 as the example ) if anyone has advice...

Downloading as we speak, and the first explanation that comes to mind is that both files have a .rar extension, and that since OS X doesn't support this archive format, you need to install a third-party utility to open them.
One files tool to open .rar files is The Unarchiver (here), and another is Stuffit Expander (there). 7zip also proposes a Mac version (here). All three will decompress a .rar file, and let you access the .dmg file(s) inside.
Also, depending on the browser you're using, and provided you might be inclined to open trusted files directly (I use Opera, and seldom save safe download; I click on "Open" in the download dialogue), your files could very well open... in the browser cache folder, out of sight. But if you use Safari, Chrome or Firefox, and you don't have any utility installed to handle .rar files, that's doubtful. I'm going to open your files now, and check if I can install them.

Edit: decompressing the first file using The Unarchiver shows that the archive is "incomplete". Which leads me to think that you might have to concatenate the two files to make one "complete" .dmg file.
If so, once they are decompressed, open a Terminal (in Applications/Utility), then type "cat", and drag both files in the window, one after the other (preferably in the right order...), type a space, then give the final file any name you want, followed by the .dmg file extension:
(e.g.:) "cat /Users/Your_Name/Desktop/File1.dmg /Users/Your_Name/File2.dmg /Users/Your_Name/Desktop/FinalFile.dmg"
