Software to help with speed

Software to speed up macbook.

There is no software provided with a Mac that does surface scanning. I looked into this some time ago. The best link I could find summarizing drive testing software is this:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1544280
That list covers everything from the free to the expensive and from sngle purpose tools to multi purpose tools.
Index correction with Disk Utility is not the same thing as surface scanning the drive, period.
I don't buy a number of the critiques above. Not everyone wants to or can afford to be reliant on Apple for everything. Not everyone has an Apple store down the street, and not everyone can or is willing to afford to take their systems into Apple for costly diagnostics.
If Apple's tools were so wonderful, why are people using Disk Warrior to recover drives when Disk Utility can't? Using some of the logic above I have to assume that since Disk Utility is an Apple system tool, if a drive can't be recovered we shoiuld simply throw our hands in the air, rush off to Apple, and heve them swap out a $60 drive for about $400...whereas others could proceed to get their drive back in working order.
If Apple's tools are so wonderful, why is it that TechTool Pro, Drive Genius, and Scannerz can all tell you that the spinning beach you keep getting is because of a failed sector at  block XXXXXX on the hard drive, whereas Disk Utility reports everything is just fine....go ahead....keep using that drive. There are good reasons third party tools exist.
As another example, I have an old PPC PowerBook that I gave my daughter. These are now selling in excellent condition on eBay for $50-$75. Do you seriously expect me to take that system in to Apple to diagnose a drive problem if I can do it with Scannerz Lite for 17 bucks, while Apple, if they'll even deal with the old  system, wants upwards of $300. You have got to be crazy!!
I see nothing wrong with third party tools that work proplerly. Scannerz, Drive Genius, TechTools Pro, and Disk Warrior all cost money, they're all made by third party companies, and they all work. I've ended up using Scannerz myself and I'm pretty sure I've linked to the company in some of my posts.
The realitiy is: Some things cost money and some people are going to charge you money for products. When this changes, please let me know so I can rush down to the Apple store to pick up my new, free Mac Pro.

  • Need help with speed remapping

    So here is my question. (check pic below to see timeline)
    I'm working on a timeline and I have a clip somewhere in the middle of this timeline. Now I've put the two markers which close off the area of the clip that I want in slow-motion. And then I drag the rubberband now to 50%. This causes the clip to obviously become longer.
    But the problem is that it doesn't push the clip that comes afterwards, it just sort of submerges and I lose a part of the clip that I put into slow-mo.
    http://gyazo.com/0cce5ab07e22897f21a25e3308a9cbb5.png Here's a picture of my timeline.
    So my question is how can I make it so that the clip after is pushed forward automatically?
    I know how to fix this problem with some dragging and pulling, but I want to become as efficient as I can and don't get into any bad habits.
    Thanks!

    If all you want to do is simply slow down or speed up a clip, use the Speed/Duration settings--it's probably the simplest way to induce a speed change. This is a constant speed change, which you can also do with Time Remapping--which is what I think you've been doing.
    The benefit of Time Remapping is that it allows for variable speed changes within a single instance of a clip. Say for example you want your clip to start at 100% speed, slow down immediately to 25%, and then speed up immediately to 200%. You can do this with Speed/Duration, simply by razoring the clip at the specific points where you want the speed change to occur, and then altering the Speed/Duration setting for that instance of the clip. With Time Remapping, not only can you do this without having to chop up the clip, but you can also create "ramps" from one speed to another--hence the variable speed aspect. You can even freeze a clip or reverse it, all without editing the clip into smaller pieces. This can result in a much smoother effect, but it might not always be what you're after. Time Remapping does have a bit of a learning curve, but it really is the more powerful option of the two. You just have to decide which is better for your purposes.
    An additional benefit, and I might be wrong on this, but I believe that using the Time Remapping function results in (theoretically) a higher quality speed change effect due to a different algorithm or some-such. It uses some different techniques to generate the interpolated frames created in a speed change, that should look smoother than if they were done with the Speed/Duration command.
    Hope the helps a bit.

  • Help with speed issue : who to contact

    I have BT Infinity 2 via HH5 and speeds are as follows;
    Wireless: DL 38M and UL 8M
    Ethernet: DL 38M and UL 8M
    and the above is a constant result, ethernet is not any faster
    I completed the BTWholesale speed test and get the same result. However, if I run the further diagnostics the information that comes back highlights the download in red and says I should contact my BB supplier.
    I note also that the range for DL is very tight with a max below 40M, however I am on BT Infinity 2 as upload shows max of 20M. The HH5 indicates that the DL synch rate is normally nearer 45M, so i am wondering if some equipment needs resetting at the exchange.
    So can anybody add clues, solutions or provide the best contact number to get this matter resolved.

    Hi TrickyDicky,
    Thanks for posting. Can you run the speed test  and post the results, including the 'further diagnostics'. That will let us see how the connection is performing at your end. I'm sure we can help with this.

  • Hardware or software to help with tremor-- suggestions needed

    Hello, my dad is trying to use an intel imac, and he's having a lot of trouble, partly due to a tremor that makes it difficult to manipulate the mouse and keyboard. Does anyone know of any solutions to such a problem? I would think there might be a mouse or trackball and a keyboard that are designed to help, or perhaps a software solution for a shaky mouse, but I thought I'd throw the question out there to see what can be found.
    Like it or not, many of us will be facing this problem eventually, and I'm learning that the mac requires more dexterity than the average 85-year-old has.

    There occurred to me that I should have mentioned that I am assuming that you are using the trackpad and keyboard of the Mac Book which I can understand your Dad really disliking. My suggestion is that you blow a few bucks and get the extra keyboard and trackball as a present for your dad and plug it into the Mac Book USB port. You might also find it handy to hook up a monitor (20" or so). It will be so much easier to read the larger screen. You might also be aware that with mouse, keyboard and display hooked up you can close the lid on the Mac Book and the display will look a bit better not having to share the video processor with the Mac Book display.
    The other thing I would mention is that it might be wise to download one of the programs that make an audible click through the speaker with each keyclick, mouse click and scroll wheel turn. I use a little Preference Pane called "Keyclick" which gives you many options on how you want it to sound (I make my keyboard sound like an old fashioned typewriter - which is a sound your Dad would be quite familiar with!) With this installed, your Dad will have much more feedback and it will make typing and mousing much easier for him.

  • Please help with speed issues and powerline adapte...

    Hello all,
    I have had infinity for a few months now and I am very unhappy with the quality of service so far, I wont go into that however,
    the problems I currently have are:
    speed dropped from 76.8Mbps down to 34.6Mbps within a week of going live, they have replaced my HH3 twice to try and remedy this but its still the same, anything you can recommend?
    as for the powerline adapters, i bought 2 extra when I took out my infinity package, all 4 have failed twice, they have been replaced aswell, received a new set this morning to install and they don't work!
    When I set them up I get the green data light and green power light, however once I plug the Ethernet cables in, the data lights go off after around 10sec,
    no matter how many times I reset and marry them its the same output, then maybe they will work for around 10-15 minutes and then go off again.
    I have 4 adapters in use ATM
    2 for vision and 2 for my computer
    bt sent me 2 different models for some reason
    I have the white simpler networks ones, 2 have black writing and 2 have orange,
    sorry for the essay but from the experience I have had from BT so far I am not impressed
    thankyou for any help in advance
    regards

    The 200mbps refers to the theoretical duplex speed and not the actual connection speed. In ideal conditions the actual is about 70 to 80mbps for the 200 adapters. So therefore most of the time in normal conditions they connect at a much lower speed.
    That's what I meant, hence why would you get 500Mbps ones if they ain't going to reach unless you're going to have your house wiring upgraded if the speed is rubbish. Didn't mean to be rude xD

  • Help with speeding up a file read

    i am reading in a .pco file with the following code:
    public static String read(String filename) throws IOException {
              StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
              FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(filename);
              filebytes = new byte[fis.available()];
              int offset = 0;
              while (fis.available() > 0) {
                   filebytes[offset++]=(byte)fis.read();
              for (int k = 0; k < filebytes.length; k++){
                   byte c = filebytes[k];
                   if (c >= 0 && c < 32) {
                        c = 32;
                   char charc = (char)c;
                   sb.append(String.valueOf(charc));
              return sb.toString();
                 }it takes forever... can anyone tell me how to speed it up? thanks.

    here is what i have now:
    public static String read(String filename) throws IOException {
              StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
              File f = new File(filename);
              BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(f));
              int size = (int) f.length();
              byte[] data = new byte[size];
              bis.read( data, 0, size );
              bis.close();
              for (int k = 0; k < data.length; k++) {
                   byte c = data[k];
                   if (c >= 0 && c < 32) {
                        c = 32;
                   sb.append(String.valueOf((char)c));
              return sb.toString();
                 }the reason i am putting this into a string is because next i am using indexOf to parse the stream. the above code is working but if anyone has an even better way, let me know!
    thanks for the help.

  • Help with speed problem please.

    Hello, I need some help please with my BT broadband. My speed has dropped and now is very slow its always been up and down, at its best it's been 4mbps and has never dropped below 1mbps untill now. I have tried to provide what I think you may need, had internet with bt for a year and this is the first time I have had a problem since having broadband. I want to find out if I can why my speed has dropped.

    Your connection reset tonight was that router droping connection or manual reset?
    your noise margin is at 19.3db which is very high as normal is 6db. Has your connection been dropping often?
    are you connected to the test socket?  If not can you connect to test socket
    try quiet line test. Dial 17070 option 2. Should be quiet and best with corded phone. If cordless then dull hum normal

  • Broadband upgrade, need help with speed please

    Hi all,
    I recently upgraded from a very old broadband package with an old router from the 1960's to the 'upto 20meg' service, with the bloke on the phone advising we should receive about 17meg as we are close to the exchange (Worcester Park, Surrey).  So when the new kit arrived the speed jumped from 2megs to about 4ish and it's now settled on about 5 after 10 days.
    I've posted the stats below as i'm after some advice really because I can't make sense of it.  Am I missing something here or should I be getting faster speeds?
    Cheers

    Hi welcometo the forum
    You appear to have a stable connection however your connection speed is low for your line attenuation are you connected to the master socket ? Or an extension if you can connect to the test socket Located at the rear of the removable front plate of the master socket and recheck the hub stats and speedtest this wil eliminate any faults with your internal wiring also are you connecting the hub to your pc by wireless or ethernet cable if wireless could you try connecting by cable and again post the speed test results this will eliminate any speed losses due to wireless interference Please try these first then we can advise further

  • Help with speeding up Hadoop application with Jrockit vm

    Hi all,
    This is Grace. I am using JRockit JVM to run some Hadoop tests. In the test, there are many short time(within 1 minute) processes running. Comparing with the Sun JVM (with -Xmx option only), the test is completed much more slowly by Jrockit JVM. I have already tried to adjust some of the Jrockit basic options, such as –Xmx, -XXaggressive and etc. But there is no big difference. Have anyone seen this problem before? And does anyone can offer some advices about optimization or tuning? Thanks a lot for your time and help.
    Here is some basic information of the testing environment:
    OS: Redhat 5.3 x86_64
    Sun vm version is 1.6.0_11 (64bits), Jrockit vm version is 3.1.0-1.6.0(64bits)
    Regards, Grace

    Most of your objects are large and goes to the old space. When you are running with a nursery all large objects are allocated in the old space. (An object larger than 2k is typically considered large). This will result in a lot of GC of the old space. I guess that this is causing a lof of memCopyBlock() which is the performance blocker.
    So, I have a few suggestions:
    * Always set initial heap size equal to maximum heap size. -Xms=Xmx (1024m in your case) Set the maximal heap size as large as possible (without resulting in page faults).
    * With such high amount of large objects you could profit a static GC, for example -Xgc:singlepar (or -Xgc:genpar with a very small nursery).
    * If the large objects in your application live shortly then you may still profit from using a nursery.
    ** Set GC strategy to -Xgc:genpar (or -Xgc:gencon) to get a nursery.
    ** You will also need to modify the threshold for large objects by setting: -XXlargeObjectLimit="a limit, a little larger than the size of your objects".
    ** Tune nursery size. You will probably have to test a few nursery sizes before you find the best suited nursery size
    ** I see that you tune TLA. TLA tuning is preferably combined with tuning the large object limit for example: -XXtlasize:min=4k, preferred=128k - XXlargeObjectLimit=4k
    I would not use -XXaggressive if it does not give you performance improvements. The same for LazyUnlcoking - it gives a performance boost for some applications, but not all.

  • Hi newb here , Can anyone help with Port Forwardin...

    Hi guys
    Newb here on Broadband Option 3 .
    New to the world of BTorrents ( hope thats not a dirty word ) and just need some help on Port Forwarding with the Curved Blue Voyager ( latest one I think )
    Problem is I can't seem to upload anything back and obviously I dont just wanna leech all the time lol
    Thanks in advance
    H

    First of welcome to BT Community Forums, although your in the help with speed/connection issues section and bit-torrent is nothing to do with BT but i'll still try to help.
    downloading a torrent file is one thing but just because you download does'nt mean you need to upload anything if for example your downloading something with say 100 seeders and 15 leechers then you may find that you dont upload anything or very little, thats nothing to worry about at all.
    Or
    If you've made a torrent and cant figure out why its not uploading it may be due to the fact you need to upload the small torrent file to a p2p site in order for others to see it.
    Hope this small insight into the world of torrents helps, but i dont know what else to tell you on this subject.
    Kindest Regards
