Software update 4.3 causing battery to die

I updated my software recently and now my battery seems to be going down extremely quickly. have notifications etc turned off, so have no idea why it is doing this!
any suggestions?!

This happens infrequently after all updates. Apple hasn't yet got all the kinks out of the update process. Try the following steps:
1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
2. Close all apps showing on the recently opened (aka "multitasking") bar.
3. Disable Ping.
4. If you have Exchange or push IMAP mail accounts, disable and re-enable push.
5. Delete and reinstall Exchange and IMAP push accounts. (Some Exchange accounts may need to be reset by your IT dept.).
6. Restore phone in iTunes as a new iPhone, without a backup. If the battery is better, then try restoring the backup (right-click device tab on left border of iTunes window and select "Restore from Backup).
If restoring as new (before adding the backup) doesn't help, there may be a hardware issue that needs warranty replacement from Apple.

  • Doing Software updates on a Full battery

    I know, when you try to run software update while on battery, you get a warning message saying it is recommended you plug your mac into a power outlet. But, if you have a FULL battery, is there any reason that you could not go ahead?

    A failed update can cause problems... some more so than others.  Admittedly, I have done updates when my battery was full and not plugged in.  Even with a fully charged battery, there is always a chance (albeit small), that you may have a battery failure in the middle of an update.  The potential result may be corrupt data right up to a non bootable system (depending on the update).  When you're doing updates, you want to make sure your system is as stable as possible to minimize any potential problems.  Keeping it plugged in is one of those things.
    Very few updates are so important that they must be done immediately.  You should almost always be able to wait until you are by a power source.  Of course Apple does give you the option to do the update after you get that message.  If you know your system fairly well, you can always go ahead with the update.  Just keep in mind the potential problems that you may run into.

  • Software Update failures seemingly caused by a corrupt tar binary

    Folks,
    just this last day I got a sw update prompt on my G4 mini (leopard) to get a quicktime and ilife browser update.. did the usual steps to start the download.. the download would complete but then it prompted to state that it could open the update archive. This caused the update to exit and leave 2 tar files in the Trash
    I rebooted and tried again but the same issue occurred.
    Seeing that the files in the trash were tar archives, I moved them to the desktop and tried to open them.. the archive utility reported it could not open them.. giving some broken pipe error. The files were not empty.. they were the size as reported by the update..75M for QuickTime76_Leopard.tar and 3.8M for iLifeMediaBrowser_v2.tar.
    So I copied these files to my Linux server and managed to untar them without issues.. inside each is a signature and tar'd pkg file.. I untar'd the pkg files and copied these back to the mini.. both installed fine interactively via their installer ui without issues and after a reboot, Quicktime shows up as version 7.6.
    So we have 2 tars that the mini archive app cannot open. So I try the prompt and untar them that way.. but I get permission denied. Checking the rights of /usr/bin/tar, I found that there were no x rights there.. other binaries in /usr/bin were fine. So I issued a sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/tar.. that restored the execute rights but it does nothing with the archive.. even a tar -help gives out nothing. The file size for the binary seems to be zero.. so its like the binary was nobbled somehow.
    I ran the following shell commands to verify the binary I have and its checksum.. I also issued an ls -alh on gzip just to show how the group and file size are clearly wrong.
    $ tar --help
    $ which tar
    /usr/bin/tar
    $ ls -alh /usr/bin/tar
    -r-xr-xr-x@ 41319 root 1483179 0B 11 Jul 2008 /usr/bin/tar
    $ md5 /usr/bin/tar
    MD5 (/usr/bin/tar) = d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e
    ls -alh /usr/bin/gzip
    -rwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136K 6 Oct 2007 /usr/bin/gzip
    So it appears I've got a broken tar command and hence update and probably many other OS activities could be broken.
    I'd like to know if this has happened to anyone else and if there is a quick fix.. obviously a fresh install will solve this.. but its a odd thing to have occurred and smells of either a virus or issue elsewhere.

    i have the same problem.
    go to and delete everything in my HD/Library/Updates.
    then run update again and choose only the leopard update.
    best to use a cable than wireless, this is a huge file.
    hope this helps... sara

  • My iPhone 5 loses up to 50% battery power (standby   do not disturb   empty multitasking) once from 8:00 am to 3:30pm what can i do? Or will there be a software update with a longer battery life?

    One day my iphone 5 lost 50% battery power (standby+do not disturb+cleared multitasking) from 8am to 3:30 pm. What can i do? Or will apple release a new software?

    I am a lucky customer of two of these storms....once which arent 3 weeks old and the first one the one that was my phone locked up in the first week and i was mashing the screen not hard and the **bleep** thing broke...well verizon says you have 30 days till you can no longer buy the phone insurance and who would of thought in my first week the **bleep** touch screen would break by me tapping on it trying to get the locked up software to respond....and guess what verizon said there is nothing they can do  to a phone with a cracked screen....and also both phones blackberrry storms that were sent to me were used equipement.  but  I am still repsponsible for the two contract agreement and I cant even use the **bleep** phone...also they say you can add insurance within 30 days of new purcchase not the phone that was malfuntioned and the screen cracked....but they let me add it to the second line....i think its very dirty of verizon to send used phones with two contracts to someone and it malfuntion like that and not replace the phone...and still hold the customer responsible for two year contract...after all the **bleep** trouble the storms have been giving customers...thats why they are sending the **bleep** things out free of charge...dont get scammed and screwed like I did go with Tmobile or att..

  • HP Printer Software Update 2.10 causes application crashes

    Installed the above update two days ago. Since then whenever I try and print from an application e.g Mail or Firefox, with my HP2550n colour laser the application crashes and says "'Application' quit unexpectedly while using HPPrintSettings plugin.'
    Have reported directly to Apple but any thoughts/help appreciated.
    Hp Photosmart Premium 309a ok?

    I agree. But as I said in my first post, my HP Photosmart Premium All-in-One c309a continues to work fine. But I have had this kind of issue before. Last time in what I think was HP 2.6 update it was the c309a that lost the ability to scan (the tab disappeared from the print preferences for the printer). At the time I was advised that HP had messed things up. There were pages and pages on the HP support website devoted to trying to sort the issue out. But it took about a year for a further update to surface.
    I am away for a few days now but will try your suggestion as well as a re-boot of everything on my return and then see if moving to Mountain Lion sorts it.

  • AirPort Utility Software Update 2009-002 Causing Wireless issues?

    I've tried to search for this but the only search box I can find is the one on the main title bar and that doesn't seem to work well for the discussions forums, am I just missing it? But anyway, that's not my real question.
    Since the last batch of updates (inc. the one mentioned in the subject) my unibody Macbook (13") has been dropping wifi constantly, even though my netbook can still connect fine and the MB even was connecting before the updates for many months without issue. I've double-checked all the settings, tried some different settings (changed security, hide/show SSID, turned airport on and off), but no help. Today it won't even show me a list of available networks, let alone try to connect to mine. The last time it did try to connect it timed out.
    I've googled a bit for this as well and found some people with similar issues but no answers, so anyone here having similar troubles?
    Cheers.

    I'm going to try this later on today, but just rebooting into Safe Mode and then back into regular OS X helps? Does booting into Safe Mode change something or perform some maintenance? Either way if it works, great.

  • Does Software Update CAUSE crashes, or come up AFTER crashes?

    Over the past 6 months or more my machine has only hung (i.e. requires a press of a hardware button to restart), about 3-4 times. Each of those times, when I restart the first thing I see is the Apple Software Update screen. At least a couple (if not all) of those times the second thing I see is the Microsoft Office Automatic Update Screen.
    I was in the office over the weekend, and no IT guys were around, and the OSX SERVER crashed (which knocked me off the internet, and also off the file server). When I restarted that machine, the first thing that came up was the Apple Software Update.
    The question I have is:
    * Could the Apple Software Update application be causing my crashes, or
    * Am I seeing a feature where OSX says "hey you just crashed, let's check for updates now, even if it hasn't been a week (which is what your preferences say I should wait)".
    Does anyone know? I've asked my IT guys here, and they've gone back and forth on it.
    Thanks,

    Why speculate? Chances are, if you look in the system console, you can find some information that might shed some light on this problem. The console is located in the Utilities folder.

  • Macbook Pro Retina display says "No batteries available" after legitimate system software update

    Issue Description
    On July 26, 2012 I placed an order with Apple store for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display with the following configuration (Order # W269108641 Serial# C02J52S9DKQ5):
    Processor 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Memory 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM, Flash Storage 512GB Flash Storage
    It was delivered August 8, 2012. It cost me $3,265.16
    I have since equipped it with accessories like a wireless apple keyboard ($69), wireless mouse ($69), USB super drive ($79), VGA display adapter ($29), Ethernet Adapter ($29) and the excellent sleeve/pouch from Pack & Smooch GmbH (GBP60))
    It's so heavily configured because it’s my main workstation. I additionally bought and installed Parallels 8 so I can run Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine because I have a few things on Windows that I need to be productive. This setup has been a dream machine until a little over a week ago.
    In the one year since I bought it, I have had only 2 issues;
    • A case of display flickering that resulted after a system software update on August 28, 2013
    (Case ID 498560320 - not much help came from Apple Support but fortunately the problem went away a week later after another system software update)
    • A case of battery failure that resulted after a system software update on October 11, 2013
    (Case ID 516534003 - I have gone through all recommendations from Apple support as I will detail below)
    Symptoms after system software update
    • Battery Icon on status bar disabled with a message "No batteries available"
    • Battery not charging
    • LED on the Magsafe power adapter no longer show
    • Keyboard backlights no longer show
    • Notebook fan loud/noisy and permanently at high speed
    • Date and time reset to a date in the past at each restart
    • Notebook starts up the moment the Magsafe adapter is connected without waiting for power button to be pressed
    • An update for "MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2" keeps appearing in Software Update
    Recommendations from Apple Support
    • Perform SMC Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
    (Done - no change in status)
    • Run Disk Utility
    (Done - no errors found)
    • Run Apple Hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    (Done - no errors found, no change in status)
    • Visit Apple Store
    (Done - they confirmed no issue with Magsafe adapter. For a fee they are happy to change the battery if confirmed faulty and re-install the OS if the battery is not the issue but am uncertain that the OS re-install will resolve the issue because I have read online about a similar case where a re-install did not resolve the issue)
    • Check System Report/Hardware/Power
    (Done - Health Information/Cycle count:0, Battery installed: No)
    • Perform NVRAM Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US)
    (Done - no change in status)
    Comments and additional Observations
    Please note the following;
    • All of the symptoms above appeared after a system software update on October 11, 2013
    • This update first appeared on October 10, 2013 but I was too busy to apply it especially because it required a system restart
    • The battery was fully charged when I decided to apply the update on October 11 morning after I got to work
    • Normally on full charge, the battery will typically deliver 3 - 4 hours depending on usage and up to 6 hours when idle
    • The said update was not interrupted or anything of the sort
    • On the day the symptoms were first observed when I first logged the case with apple, the system ran on battery while it performed the Apple Hardware Test while I was driving to the Apple support store on my way home even though the status bar was indicating "No battery available"
    I make the following deductions solely based on my observations
    • An apple authorized system software update broke the system
    • The nature of the failure is communication related - the battery charging circuit and related systems are not getting the necessary instructions to function as they should (It's a known fact that rechargeable batteries do NOT die instantaneously, the total hours they run on full charge will gradually reduce over time as they degrade on use)
    • It’s possible the update is not being applied correctly because the item “MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2” is still in Software update after subsequent attempts to apply it
    • The high fan speed is nothing to do with high temperature or high processor load, according to the Activity Monitor utility the highest CPU utilization 1.9 – 4.7% is by kernel_task (PID 0) followed by activitymonitord at 1.8 – 2.2% (PID 481)
    • The symptoms match what an SMC reset should resolve according to Apple documentation
    • This is a known problem within Apple based on the documentation provided and the numerous similar cases reported online
    Summary;
    The system is running OS X 10.8.5
    I have provided this detailed documentation in the hope that someone who understands this system can say exactly what is going on. It's meant to be a dream machine but now you can hear the fan from across a large room, the battery doesn't charge and is in fact not recognized so I lose data if the Magsafe adapter gets unplugged, and I have to reset the system date each time I restart the notebook.
    I've used this notebook with utmost care for a little more than a year, this investment of over $3,500 could have bought 3 high end notebooks from DELL or HP but I chose Apple.
    I have suffered untold loss in productivity in the last 10 days since this issue occurred, I respectfully request Apple to fix my notebook.

    If BlackBerry Desktop Software is not recognizing your phone, you're really out of luck; it's imperative that BDS connects to your phone.
    RIM has this to say about getting your phone to connect to BDS:

  • Leopard Software Updates Server goes insane

    I erase installed our Xserve to Mac OS X Server v10.5.1. I tried to start the SUS (Software Update Server) with the old Tiger SUS store. It didn't seem to like it and began downloading all the updates again. Fair enough. I think the migration guide mentions that Leopard may do this. Next when all seemed well the SUS began deleting the index.sucatalog file. In fact it trashed the whole catalogs directory and begins downloading stuff again. I tried trashing everything in the SUS store (excluding the Leopard SoftwareUpdateServerStats executable) to get it to start from scratch but this didn't help. Got the exact same behaviour. I am loathed to cure the illness by killing the patient.
    Here are some seemingly related error messages from the SUS log:
    2007-11-27 16:29:08.075 swupd_syncd46:3d17 ERROR: __CFURLCache::StepSQLStatement - step failed (exceed retry) - ErrCode: 5
    2007-11-27 16:29:10.064 swupd_syncd46:20b ERROR: __CFURLCacheSelectAndCreateResponse - failed to select, retry exceeded - ErrCode: 5
    Anyone else ran into this? I'm not sure if this is a Leopard bug or if I have simply driven the service insane. I need to know how to reset it. I've had a brief look at the config files in in /etc/swupd but I'm not clear if something in here is screwed up. Submitted a call via email to AppleCare but so far no response.
    Thanks in advance.

    For what its worth I'm seeing the same problem on our test 10.5.1 server. Although I'm getting the error without first trying to use the old tiger sus store. I'm seeing the same error messages you mentioned in my log. Software update from what I can tell has been trying to download the updates now for several days, always gets stuck on one (it varies most of the time, but the final cut pro 4.5 update has been a popular one lately), and then refuses to go any further. Stopping an restarting the software update server usually causes sus to erase what it has downloaded (to the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/downloads folder) and start over! Talk about killing my internet connection...I've been trying to be patient and just let it finish updating (so it will actually create the proper aliases in the /usr/share/swupd/html/content/catalogs folder) but it's never finishing. I've made it to about 8.8gb so far but I'm sure that's not the end. I've heard others mention that there is something in the neighborhood of 13gb of updates. Incidentally, according to server admin, all updates are copied and enabled, which of course is not true. Sorry I don't have a resolution, but hopefully through sharing our experiences we may be able to narrow down the problem.

  • Software update corrupt

    This morning I ran a software update to my Macbook Pro.  Now, my entourage email does not see my old emails AND I'm unable to send emails.  PLUS I cannot open an powerpoint documents.  Of course, presentation tomorrow!

    Hi Kelly,
    You ran Apple's Software Update or Microsoft's AutoUpdater? I'm unsure how an Apple Software Update could have caused Office to stop working properly unless it was a combo update for OS X and it broke some compatibility somewhere.
    Can you tell us what updates what performed? What version of OS X you're running and what version of Office?

  • Problem with iphone4 music after software update

    Updated software on my iphone 4 on 3/22/13.  Now, my entire music library on my phone is in icloud format and must be downloaded.  Discovered this while flying cross country. Grrrr.
    Why did this happen and - more to the point - how can i get my music library to sync normally again so it's simply on my phone and ready to play?
    Thanks.

    I phoned my provider as requested and they have advised me that it is necessary to send my brand new phone in for repair.  I honestly don't know if they have opened a support ticket.  I do thank you for your prompt assistance thus far, however, I am none too impressed with this situation.  I hope the next software update doesn't cause more problems, so far the phone isn't worh the contract it's written for when it comes to user friendliness, app availability, or user options.  I was hoping for better from BlackBerry this time around.

  • Why does my fully charged iPad 2 battery keep dying at 50% charge? I have updated to iOS 7 and this started happening. What could be the cause of it?

    My iPad's battery keeps dying. When I plug it in and put it back on, the screen shows a drained battery. After a few moments it boots up. However, when I check the battery charge, it's at 52% or so. Can someone tell me what's causing this? And what can I do to fix it?

    For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
