Software update fails on updates
I run Software Update and it shows 3 updates but fails on all installs.
Mine is doing the same thing. Also having issues with it connecting to my time capsule correctly. I have tried running disk utilities and also restarting the computer and zapping the p-RAM. If I can't get updates how will I be able to download the Lion update that fixes the bug?? Ugh.

When I click on Firefox the first time it says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments…. (with a green bar)" then it says "Software Update Failed (in blue) with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle)
The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." When I click the ok, Firefox opens up. If I open another Firefox window with the previous one still running, it doesn't give me any of these messages, it just opens normally.

Every time Firefox openedIf you can't install on top of the current installation then you need to delete or rename the current Firefox program folder to do a clean install.
It is possible that your security software is using or locking files, so you can try to temporarily disable that software during the installation. -
Now the previous version won't open. I downloaded and tried to instal 6.0 without software update, which failed, and my old 5.5.3 Airport Utility still won't open.
iTunes no longer recognizes my airport express.
Error Message:
None of the selected updates could be installed.
An unexpected error occurred.
Can't delete Airport Utility and reinstal from scratch as it is, “AirPort Utility” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.
Any sugestions?I reinstalled AirPort 5.5.3 which worked, but the app still won't launch but iTunes now recognizes my AirPort Express, I just hope I don't want to change its settings.

"Failed to download the update from internet. Error = 5"
The above is the error I am getting when running any ADR. The error is quite clear software updates are failing to download and Error = 5 being a permissions error its clear that the downloads are failing due to incorrect permissions applied to the download
path.
Here is the last bit of my ruleengine.log, everything above is the same except for the update trying to be downloaded of course:

Also, I do not have a patchdownloader.log anywhere, Ive checked all aforementioned locations from various sources and it just simply does not exist on my SCCM server. Here is my setup:
Server1: Primary server with all roles installed locally except the site database is on its own server. WSUS is installed locally here and DB is stored here.
Server2: SQL DB for Primary site DB
Server3: Secondary remote site running MP, DP, SUP. DB is SQL Express local.
So the SUP role was installed successfully on both server1 first and server 2 second with the site servers accounts. The SUP Synchronizes successfully and I can see a large list of updates available for use but not downloaded of course. I have set WSUS option
to store updates locally and have plenty of space at the target destination.
So here is my issue, I have been working on this issue for the better part of a week and understand the error code from the ruleengine.log to be a permissions issue. I have also proved this out but creating a test ADR with minimal updates and applied NTFS perms
to the target path for Modify with the everyone group (testing purposes only). The updates downloaded successfully. So this puts me right back to where I was, knowing its a permissions issue but not understanding what permissions are needed. Let me explain
further.
The best way to start is to show what perms I have to the target location for downloads/wsus/sup anything:
Path: \\Server1\UpdatesAndDefinitions (permissions being applied to the UpdatesAndDefinitions root folder)
SCCMAdmin (account used for most SCCM tasks except for NA) / Modify / Share and NTFS
Server1$ (primary site server) / Modify / NTFS
Everyone / read and execute / NTFS and Share
There are other system generated perms but the above three are the important ones. So hence my confusion I know that the SCCMAdmin account or the Server its self has to be accessing the target directory so why is it failing with a permissions issue?
My next step was to enable Auditing on the target path. Doing so revealed just what I thought and through me into further frustration:
A network share object was accessed.

Now I may not be the best I traversing through the mess of audit entry's and translating them, but from what I can see the two accounts that have the proper share and ntsf perms ive listed above are indeed the ones accessing the target location and the audit
code is success. I filter for failures and found no audits for failures whatsoever yet my downloads still fail religiously, unless of course I open myself up with the everyone group.
So next... I tried adding in the Network Service account with proper permissions, the Local Service Account, my user account, and all no go's.
Next... I remove the SUP roles from SCCM checked the logs for deinstall confirmations, and reinstalled these roles. No Go!
If anyone can assist I would be in your debt and very grateful.
Oh last note, but very important note I'm running SCCM 2012 SP1 CU4
Thanks,
Michael
MichaelSpauldingI just tested with the everyone group further; I added everyone with modify for ntfs and just read only for share and downloads failed!
I then changed the share perms for everyone to change and the ntfs to read/execute and poof downloads complete! Obviously change share perms for everyone leaves me open which Id like to prevent, so finding what account is being used is crucial.
I have already tried adding all of the SCCM accounts I use and the servers themselves as change perms to share and ntfs and have not had any luck.

About once a month I receive the Software update notice that has failed. How do I find out who/what is trying to update? If I decided I want this update how do I allow it to continue? If I decided I do not want this update how do I stop it and its attempt to update? The only response allowed is "OK". When OK is selected the window goes away and nothing else happens.
Hi sharkbiscuit79,
Yes your cabinet 10 on the Crediton exchange has already been installed and linked with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet (making it able to provide FTTC fibre broadband) and has been Accepting FTTC orders since December 2013. PCP10 (with it's DSLAM cabinet within 100meters of it) is locate on the junction of Commercial Road and the A3072.
However by the looks of things your are just too far away to obtain a FTTC (VDSL2) connection, meaning FTTC fibre broadband is not available to you.
Have a look at the Connecting Devon and Somerset Considerations (particularly the last paragraph) - http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/where-when-map-conditions/
Your best bet is to talk to Connecting Devon and Somerset to see if there are any further plans to get a fibre based service to your area via https://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/contact-us/ (as your area may not be inscope of any further deployment). Best give them your full address and landline number too as they can check if you are within a NGA area.

My ipod touch has a permanent image of the end of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an icon of ITunes. I can't reset using the two button method, and ipod does not appear on itunes when I plug it into the computer - and nothing else happens either. This happened after I agreed to a software update which failed. How can I get it going again?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I go through all the motions in troubleshooting and uninstall Itunes, but I have not got Quicktime and Apple Software Update to uninstall. I then re-install Itunes but I get an error saying that 'Service Apple Mobile failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start'. Which I have. Please help!!
I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

Hi,
I've been trying for days to download Windows support software via Bootcamp assistant but it always fails with message 'Can't install windows software because it is not currently available from the software update server.'
Anyone else had problems or success with this?
Thanks in advance.9thdoc wrote:
I'm getting a similar but distinct error message in snow leopard: Download could not continue. "The windows support software is not available" and have no original snow leopard instal disc with me.
Your issue is completely different. You are running Snow Leopard. There is no download for Windows Support software for Snow Leopard, hence the error you see. Snow Leopard Windows Support software is on the Snow Leopard installation disk.
You need the Snow Leopard installation disk or a replacement for it. -
Hard Drive Corrupt After Failed Software Update
Hi everyone,
I have an iBook that was recently down for about a month due to a failing DC in board. After replacing the board and restarting, I had a month worth of updates in software update. I installed the two that didn't require a restart -- I think they were the latest iTunes and Quicktime updates. Something went wrong in the middle of the install and after waiting with the OS locked and the hard drive spinning for a couple hours I finally did a hard restart.
Now upon startup I get to the grey Apple logo and the indicator spins while the hard drive goes back and forth between clicking and spinning. Apple Hardware Test says everything's fine, Disk First Aid gets to "Checking Catalog file" and then errors out:
Invalid key length
Volume check failed
I'm wondering what my best option is to restore the disk since I know my actual data is still there. Also, I haven't tried using target disk mode for anything -- is that worth a try? Thanks.Matt:
"Invalid key length" is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. You will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. Otherwise, you will need to reformat, erase and reinstall. If you do not have your data backed up you can try using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire Mac.

I have a first generation Macbook Air running Lion, and just ran software update to get the latest version of iTunes. It appears I may have gotten a firmware update mixed in the bunch, and now it keeps trying to run the update at boot, failing, and shutting down.
I can start the restore partition, and the system appears to function, but I cannot figure out how to abort this failing update so I can use my system, and determine which update is breaking it and why. I've tried resetting the firmware, but that didn't change anything.
There's nothing, not even a the CD drive plugged into the Air, so it's not a peripheral problem.
I could restore from backups, but that seems like a very brute force way to get rid of a firmware update loader.
Does anyone know how to disable these little beasts?Restart the Air while holding down the shift key, this is safe mode. Once in to the login screen, login then hold the shift key again. It will disable login items, which can be the cause of startup problems. Remove all your login items from your user accout and try a restart (Note the login items if you need to re-add essential ones later). If it all works well, then keep an eye on third party startup items, they will cause you grief!

10.7.5 lion server software update failed - whats the cause?
Hi all,
I applied the software update for 10.7.5 to my Mac Mini Server, but it looks like it didn't apply correctly.
Server Admin and Server are unable to connect in order to manage system services, Software Update is not able to identify the packages on the machine and therefore gets hungup when it starts. System services that were working prior to update are now failing (vpnd, webdav).
The system identifies itself as being on 10.7.5, but I believe a number of packages were not upgraded. For example, the Server and Server Admin tools are showing the same modify times as before the update. This seems to be confirmed by system.log.
Any ideas how I can get the packages applied?

Sep 20 19:54:18 homeminisrvr installd[33664]: PackageKit: Missing bundle path, skipping: <bundle id="com.apple.airport.airportutility"></bundle>I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed. A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
Any ideas? -
10.6.8 Crashes all software after failed update
Hi there,
I have an older mac mini running 10.6.8, I decided to update it to make it run smoother as I needed Java JDK installed but all instals failed, however the update failed for no reason.
Now every time I try to use it, majority of the software fails, here is some software that i've tried: Coda, App store, Software update, Safari, uTorrent, google drive. They crash before they are even launched, please find a crash report for safari below

I've tried installing the combined update, and it didn't help! I've tried booting into safe mode and then rebooting. I've tried to delete all public files and turn file sharing on and off, however it was off before anyway.
All possible solutions i've found have failed, would appreciate any help as I'm very stuck with this!Do you have another Mac or access to one? Could use the optical drive of the other Mac in Firewire Target Disk Mode.

Software update server- 10.4.8 fails to update
Hello all,
I have a software update server and perticular updates fail when run on client computers. I have just been stuck disabling them in Server Admin. What is the easiest way to fix this. Some updates in peticular are 10.4.8 and different logic updates. Could these pkgs have become corrupted and need to be re-added to the /usr/share/swupd/html/ directory?
thank you!Hi, I was wondering if you had made any progress on this problem. I have spent some time tonight looking at the update_list.txt file that the Apple Knowledge Base article shows you how to generate. I know for sure that the 10.4.8Combo updater is one that fails to install. I have noticed something that i cannot explain and would be interested to see if you see the same. Below is an excerpt from the .txt file. I noticed that some updates do not follow the folder numbering structure that the others do. The 10.4.8 Combo updater, along with a few others, begin with zzz. Any ideas on this?

Since I upgraded my Intel IMac to a 2tb drive I've been getting the software update telling me there are two updates to load (involving a restart) the download works and the instalation appears to be normal until the restart when the system tells me the install failed. Anybody getting the same problem?
Hi, I have the same problem. Imac OS X 10.6.8 (late 2008) Snow Leopard. I posted same question yesterday. 27 views but no replies yet. I have 6 updates that download but won't install. Sorry I can't help. If I get a reply with help I will pass it on.

10.4.7 Update Failed, Now Software Update Broken
I tried to update from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7, but the update failed. I then tried the update via the package that was downloaded. No luck. Now, when I try to launch Software Update, it dies.
Any help would be great appreciated. I am pretty much a newbie at OS X (1.5 years), after using Windows for 15 years.
Here is the error report. Notice that it says I am running 10.4.7

iMac G5 rev. A Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RAMHello Chad:
You do need to run repair disk from your software install DVD (you cannot repair a boot drive from the same drive). If that fails to repair errors, you have a couple of options.
Alsoft's DiskWarrior is the "gold standard" of directory repair (pricey at about $90, but worth it).
If you used a program like SuperDuper to create a bootable clone on your external HD, you simply need to restore it. If you do not have a bootable clone, you really cannot restore from the external HD.
If you do have your data backed up in some fashion (but not a bootable clone), I would suggest you run an archive and install (see above). A&I will install a fresh copy of OS X (you would have to update it, of course) and also preserves your own programs, files, and settings.

Various Software Updates (Intel)" Can't be Installed (verification failed!)
This is essentially a repost of a problem unsolved, but with a new wrinkle:
When I first reported this two months ago, it was just happening on an Intel iMac. Now, someone else in the office just purchased a MacBook Pro, and from the SAME NETWORK, is have the exact same problem!
The process is to run Software Update. Select an update. Downloading begins. But when it gets to the end, Software Update reports:
The update "<whatever the update is named>" Can't be Installed
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or correupted since being signed by "Apple".
Tried this several times, same message.
So, in the case of the 10.4.8 update, I tried downloading the stand-alone installers (MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg and then MacOSXUpd10-1.4.8Intel.dmg).
Both stand-alone packages downloaded, but got a "verification failed" message in the Safari DOWNLOADS window.
Plenty of hard disk space. Permissions Repaired.
I SUSPECT the problem has something to do with either 1) the NetGear router (which connects to the DSL modem) or the Airport Base Station (which connects to the physical network, which connects to the NetGear Router).
Both Macs (iMac & MacBook Pro) are connected via the AIrport base station.
I'm pretty sure I have a good network connection, because I am able to use Apple Remote Desktop to see into the network and connect to the iMac with no connection errors.
Any ideas from all you gurus out there?I am having the same problems on my wifes iMac. Any large updates just won't come down. Someone had suggested memory problems, but I have done a full hardware check and all is cool. My G5 on the same network get's it's updates OK.
However, when I try to download the combined 10.4.8 update (149Mb) for my wife (via my machine) I still get a verification error! I don't know what to do next. The problems started with the 10.4.8 update, so maybe it's 10.4.7 related?
