Software Update Frozen

After I run Software Update, it'll find an update, but when I go to click on install or any of the other choices I can't. Everything is frozen. However, I can drag the box around. How do I fix this so I can install updates?

I'm reporting a similar problem - software update seems to get stuck. The fix did not work.
I have a macbook pro 13" 2010, has RAMDISK 256GB, OS 10.6.6. Only owned it 3 weeks, ran several cycles of update without a hitch after migrating from a 3-year old MacbookPro running OS 10.5.8. No problems with Update until today, system wanted to upgrade iMovie 9.0.2 and Brother Printer System (argh!).
As soon as I get the update window, says 2 items to install, the "Install now" button is grayed out, and items inside this window are slow to respond: I click on "Show Details" and (seconds later) the list of software items appears, the check-boxes are unchecked and when I try to check the boxes, there is a 30 to 60 second lag in UI response to the checkboxes or dialog elements. I can move the window, there is no spinning beach ball, other apps respond normally. The system monitor says there is plenty of disk and RAM, the most active CPU thread is Software Update occupying 10% to 20% CPU, no hog processes visible. I tried force-quitting SW Update several times, same deal. I also ran Verify & Fix permissions, and Verify Disk (some permissions were odd, but disk verify was clean).
I did notice that the SW Update dialog (Show Details window) said "Update downloaded" in a status update at the bottom of the window. Hey wait, I never even gave the OK to install all, I just looked at the Show Details window. Seems SW Update is getting ahead of me.
I tried the deletion of the files mentioned as a fix, mentioned above in this thread. Still no change in behavior.
However, I eventually just waited out the lag in UI response and finally got to install the items, successfully (no reboot was needed). I'm also running Little Snitch, but never seen it get in the way of SW update before. Hope the SW Update is not going bad on us.

I'm in the middle of doing a software update and (its the latest snow leopard update) and its frozen with like 3 pixles left but its been sitting here for like 1/2 hour... any ideas on what to do?

Let's assume you have a cloned backup:
    1. Start from the backup
    2. Download the update combo version
    3. Open Disk Utility and repair the internal drive
    4. Reapply update to the internal drive

  • IPod Software Update frozen

When I fired up iTunes, I got repeated messages that there was an update to the iPod software. I think it was the OS, and it was either 3.1.2 or 3.2.1 (it's frozen right now, can't check) and is 238.3MB. When it downloaded, it started to update my iPod Touch, but things are frozen at that point. The iPod Touch shows a white apple, with an empty progress bar beneth it. iTunes shows a progress window titled "iPod". It contains the text "Updating iPod software" and a progress bar that shows no progress. There's only a small segment of blue that moves from left the right (never changing width), then starting on the left again.
What can I do? I have very little time before I go on a long trip, and will need this iPod Touch. I'm not sure whether it's because I use iTunes on a nonAdmin account. I didn't think it would affect anything downloaded from iTunes on the web to the iPod.

  • RESOLVED - Software Update Frozen - RESOLVED

    Hi,
Connected my BB Bold 9900 to my computer and Blackberry Desktop told me to update from 7.0 (Bundle 1465) to 7.0 (2406).
I started the update and it went along fine until it reached "Downloaded Modules 252 of 1415" and it's been stuck there for over an hour.
Any ideas? Don't really ewant to unplug my usb in case it crashes the current OS.
    Any help is much appreciated

Go ahead and unplug your USB cord and close down BlackBerry Desktop Software.  Connect once again and follow any prompts you are given i.e. updates or problems loading updates, please try again, etc.
Unplugging your phone during an update is not usually recommended however we can help you recover your phone if you encounter a problem, so go ahead and unplug it and start over.
Please post back with your results.
    - If my response has helped you, please click "Options" beside my post and mark it as solved. Clicking the "thumbs up" icon near the bottom of my response would also be appreciated.

iOS 5.1.1 Software Update - just tried to update and it didn't work! Got to the final stages and was presented with error 1602! My screen now has the frozen image of the itunes logo and usb thing. Happened once before - funnily enough when doing an update back in November - I had to visit an Apple store to have the phone restored. Would appreciate any advice as I would like to avoid another trip to the apple store.

    found the real problem.
In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
    Copy the contents to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process.

  • I just downloaded a new software update to my ipod touch and now my ipod is frozen with a screen picture of music round blue symbol and an arrow displaying a cable connection. I received a message saying that the download was not successful.

I just downloaded a new software update to my ipod touch and now the ipod and screen are frozen. I received a message that the download was not successful and now my screen is showing the blue round itunes symbol with an arrow pointing to the symbol and shows a cable below it. I have tried the restart of pushing the two buttons together and waiting 10 seconds for the apple symbol which appears and then go backs to the same stuck symbol. My computer is not recognizing the ipod either and will not connect. What needs to be done?  Thanks.

Try manually placin the iPod in Recovery Mode and restore via iTunes.
Next try DFU mode and restore

  • The software update on my Mac has frozen it completely

The software update on my Mac has frozen it completely at the grey screen. I have tried everything to exit it and nothing is working! Help please!!! I've tried alt command esc, forcing the computer to shut off then restart, letting the power drain, nothing. I can't get the computer to even give me the beach ball of doom, it's this grey circle of perpetual nothing.

    Hello Heatherb90,
It sounds like you are unable to boot your computer after a recent software update. I would use the following troubleshooting from the article named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Start with this troubleshooting and work your way down the article as needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Screen frozen on software update

just recieved iPad Air - settings section indicated new software update to iOS 8.1.2 but when I said that I wanted to download it, the screen has frozen at the Terms and Conditions page and I can't get rid of it.

Assuming you've unpowered it and when restarted it does the same you probably need to retire it via iTunes:

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.
