Solaris 10/08 w/ ZFS rpool NFS doesn't mount at boot time?

I've got an issue with NFS not mounting vfstab entered mounts during boot and was wondering if the latest Sol 10/08 with ZFS had anything to do with it.
1) #vi /etc/vfstab
server:/vol/share - /share nfs - yes rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noac,vers=3,timeo=600
server2:/vol/share2 - /share2 nfs - yes rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noac,vers=3,timeo=600
2) reboot -- -rv
Upon rebooting, the shares do not show up, but doing a mountall mounts them finally:
#mountall
mount: /tmp is already mounted or swap is busy
3) Doing a df -k at this point shows me they mounted.
So what gives? Why are they not mounting at boot? I tried to get around it by doing removing the vfstab entries, adding them into auto_master and then using cachefs, but my employer was not satisfied with autofs and wants them at boot and persistent via the vfstab. So what can be done to get this to work?
Thank you,

It appears I didn't have all of the services set online correctly:
#svcs |grep nfs
online Jan_05 svc:/network/nfs/status:default
online Jan_05 svc:/network/nfs/nlockmgr:default
So, I enabled the following:
#svcadm enable nfs/mapid
#svcadm enable nfs/cbd
#svcadm enable nfs/client
#scvs |grep nfs
Checked again:
#svcs |grep nfs
online Jan_05 svc:/network/nfs/status:default
online Jan_05 svc:/network/nfs/nlockmgr:default
online 15:48:24 svc:/network/nfs/mapid:default
online 15:48:33 svc:/network/nfs/cbd:default
online 15:48:42 svc:/network/nfs/client:default
Tested to make sure no errors were reported:
# svcs -xv
Then rebooted again.
Voila! It worked! Sometimes reading the documents on docs.sun.com pay off. I was just being too lazy to do it and gave up when I posted this. The solution is to check the services and ensure nfs/client is running correctly and then try rebooting again.

  • [SOLVED] NET_PROFILES=('menu') doesn't work at boot time

Hi I've created two network profiles to change eth0 configuration on my laptop according to where I am.
The problem is that NET_PROFILES=('menu') (in rc.conf) doesn't work at boot time: the profile select dialog doesn't appear.
It works only if I do a /etc/rc.d/network restart.
Here is the relevant part of my rc.conf
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    # Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
    # if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
    # - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up
    # - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
    # Network profiles are found in /etc/network-profiles
NET_PROFILES=('menu') #### I tried even without quotes with the same result!!
By the way, I tried this on three different machines (one is always up to date, the others aren't)  with the same result.

iphitus thanks for your prompt reply, but I already have dialog installed. In fact the menu appears if I do a network restart, but it doesn't at boot.

  • Ios 6 orientation doesn't work and boot time increases. How to solve these issues for dummy? I don't understand code and strings suggested by others.

I just upgraded from ios 5 to ios 6 on my ipad2. Now orientation doesn't work properly. Boot time increase, it takes longer time to boot. Is there any configuration to solve these issues? I can't understand the explanation with code and strings found on google to solve the orientation issue. Any easy configuration for dummy ?

It supports well for ios 5. I couldn't remember (5.x.x) exactly but I always keeps update for ios5 and the abnormality starts when I upgraded to ios 6.

  • Random NFS/CIFS drive mounting on boot

Hello, can someone please give me some insight as to where this drive is coming from? Everytime I restart my machine a CIFS drive mounts on my desktop and I cannot figure out where it is coming from, or how to prevent it from mounting. In the screenshot you will see that it says the server is an NFS://x-browser? What the heck is this? Any help would be appreciated.

Linc, Holding down command key does not work. Thanks for the suggestion.
Gerry, Parallels does not boot upon start-up. It only runs when I launch.
Interesting side-note: The desktop shows a CIFS drive, the sidebar shows it listed under shared and calls it "x-browser", and finally the finder shows "connected as: NFS"
Whoa, I hope that last bit makes sense.

  • Zfs set userquota doesn't work on upgraded datasets?

    Greetings all,
I put all the latest patches on a Solaris 10 system with zfs to and upgraded the zpool to version 15 and zfs to version 4 so I could use user-based quotas. When I try to set a userquota on an existing dataset, it takes the command but doesn't set up the quota. If I create a new dataset, then I can assign quotas to it. Does the userquota not work on existing datasets that have been upgraded? Here are the commands that illustrate the problem:
    # zfs list
    NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
    data 50.7G 145G 50.7G /data
    # zpool upgrade
This system is currently running ZFS pool version 15.
All pools are formatted using this version.
    # zfs upgrade
This system is currently running ZFS filesystem version 4.
All filesystems are formatted with the current version.
    # zfs set userquota@finleyc=50G data
    # zfs get userquota@finleyc data
    NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
    data userquota@finleyc - -
    # zfs create data/test
    # zfs set userquota@finleyc=50G data/test
    # zfs get userquota@finleyc data/test
    NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
    data/test userquota@finleyc 50G local
    # zfs destroy data/test
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Can you repeat the test and, before erasing the dataset, send the output for
    # zfs userspace data/testCheers

  • Resize mirrored ZFS rpool

    I have a ZFS rpool mirrored with 2 hard disks. I need to resize it with bigger capacity. Below is my questions;
    1. Can we resize a mirrored rpool?
    2. If yes, How? (Please provide me the source) Thanks.
    3. If the rpool is using local disk and i have other storage LUNs can be attached... what is the best practice to increase the rpool size?
    4. If resizing is not possible, can someone shed some light how could we migrate a mount point from rpool (local disk) to new pool (SAN storage). Please advise.
    Thank you.

Yes, it is possible to increase the root pool size by either attaching a larger disk and detaching the smaller disk or by using zpool replace to do an outright replacement. If you attach a disk from remote storage, so that you have a local disk and remote disk for a mirrored root pool, then there is a risk that if the remote disk is slow to come up after a boot, for example, the pool might be degraded. Similarly, if you use remote storage for both root pool disks. Forcing loading the drivers early in the boot process can help this.
Which Solaris 10 release is this?
Does the existing root pool disk have existing unused slices or is all the disk space in slice 0?
There is a way to expand the root pool disk slice if existing unused slices exist but its a bit more complicated, but I can walk you through it.
The doc that describes root pool disk replacement is here:

  • Installing Solaris 10 with RAID + ZFS ?

Hi, i've recently built a home-made server for racking with a local co-location provider, I've currently got Fedora 9 on it, but would really wish to have Solaris 10 to get ZFS support.
Got a couple of questions before i wreck my fedora 9 install, if anyone would be so kind,
I've dowloaded the Solaris 10 5/08 iso and burned that to dvd ready for install. Now when I do install Solaris will it reformat the drives as default with ZFS support or is this something that has to be done afterwards, also with the x86 install will it be able to boot from ZFS?
Idealy I've got two identical drives on there for RAID 1 so for the entire machine to be using ZFS would be the ideal setup, running in headless with just SSH to connect.
    Any thoughts?

If you are running Solaris 10 U5, you can only have mirroring using svm, plus the root file system must be UFS.
However, you can make a slice in a zfs partition an mirror that (I wouldn't recommend using svm to mirror on
    top of ZFS).
Opensolaris 2008.05 does zfs boot, and Nevada could do zfs boot since Build72 ( http://sol10frominnerspace.blogspot.com/2007/09/setup-zfs-boot-for-build-72.html ) - though bits and pieces were
not working o rmissing (like swap in a zvol). The big roll in was on Build94 ( http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/on/flag-days/91-95/ )
so if you get the latest, your chances of running into any issues are lower.

When you said you have no fax machines on your line, that does include computers directly connected to the phone line?
The reason that I ask is a computer with a dial-up modem (a non broadband modem) that can connect to your phone line, can have software that makes the computer act as a fax machine.

The Shift Command Back-slash, sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. I find no rhyme nor reason for this. I have a MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion, the latest updates. It doesn't matter if I am in Full Screen or not.
I am quite confused regarding this.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type of copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, empty the cache more often from your keyboard.
    Command + Option + E

  • Optical drive doesn't work all the time

My optical drive doesn't mount movies i bought on dvds. IT'S like it has a mind of its own, it only plays movies when it feels like it and forget any install dvds like Snow Leopard, printers etc...! What's the problem with it? I cleaned it and all my dvds are like brand new, no scratches or any thing.

    Hello marinfo
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It is normal for all the fans to be running all the time.
If your iMac is making noise, then there is something wrong and you need to take it in for service.
