Solaris 10, Oracle 10g, and Shared Memory
Hello everyone,
We've been working on migrating to Solaris 10 on all of our database servers (I'm a UNIX admin, not a DBA, so please be gentle) and we've encountered an odd issue.
Server A:
Sun V890
(8) 1.5Ghz CPUs
32GB of RAM
Server A was installed with Solaris 10 and the Oracle data and application files were moved from the old server (the storage hardware was moved between servers). Everything is running perfectly, and we're using the resource manager to control the memory settings (not /etc/system)
The DBAs then increase the SGA of one of the DBs on the system from 1.5GB to 5GB and it fails to start (ORA-27102). According to the information I have, the maximum shared memory on this system should be 1/4 of RAM (8 GB, actually works out to 7.84 GB according to prctl). I verified the other shared memory/semaphore settings are where they should be, but the DB would not start with a 5 GB SGA. I then decided to just throw a larger max shared memory segment at it, so I used the projmod to increase project.max-shm-memory to 16GB for the project Oracle runs under. The DB now starts just fine. I cut it back down to 10GB for project.max-shm-memory and the DB starts ok. I ran out of downtime window, so I couldn't continue refining the settings.
Running 'ipcs -b' and totalling up the individual segments showed we were using around 5GB on the test DB (assuming my addition is correct).
So, the question:
Is there a way to correlate the SGA of the DB(s) into what I need the project.max-shm-memory to? I would think 7.84GB would be enough to handle a DB with 5GB SGA, but it doesn't appear to be. We have some 'important' servers getting upgraded soon and I'd like to be able to refine these numbers / settings before I get to them.
Thanks for your time,
Steven
To me, setting a massive shared memory segment just seems to be inefficient. I understand that Oracle is only going to take up as much memory (in general) as the SGA. And I've been searching for any record of really large shared memory segments causing issues but haven't found much (I'm going to contact Sun to get their comments).
The issue I am having is that it doesn't make sense that the DB with a 5GB SGA is unable to startup when there is an 8GB max shared memory segment, but a 10GB (and above) seems to work. Does it really need double the size of the SGA when starting up, but 'ipcs' shows it's only using the SGA amount of shared memory? I have plans to cut it down to 4GB and test again, as that is Oracle's recommendation. I also plan to run the DB startup through truss to get a better handle on what it's trying to do. And, if it comes down to it, I'll just set a really big max shared memory segment, I just don't want it to come back and cause an issue down the road.
The current guidance on Metalink still seems to be suggesting a 4GB shared memory segment (I did not get a chance to test this yet with the DB we're having issues with).
I can't comment on how the DBA specifically increased the SGA as I don't know what method they use.

Solaris 10, Oracle 10g and ORA-27102 out of memory
After much STFW'ing, RTFM'ing and experimenting I finally got Oracle 10g to start a database on a SunBlade 100 with 512MB of memory and Solaris 10. As most of the replies on the web about error 27102 "out of memory" address solutions in Solaris 8 and 9, I thought I should post a clear description of the solution here.
Unlike earlier releases of Solaris, most of the system parameters needed to run Oracle are already set properly, so the only one you need is the maximum shared memory parameter. In earlier versions this was called SHMMAX and was set by editing the /etc/system file and rebooting. With Solaris 10 you set this by modifying a "Resource Control Value". You can do this temporarily by using prctl, but that is lost at reboot so you will need to add the command to the oracle user's .profile. The other option is to create a default project for the oracle user:
projadd -U oracle -K "project.max-shm-memory=(priv,2048MB,deny)" user.oraclewhat this does:
- makes a project named "user.oracle" with the user oracle as it's only member.
- because the name was of the form "user.username" it becomes the oracle user's default project.
- the value of the maximum shared memory is set to 2gb, you might want to use a larger value here if you have more memory and swap.
- no reboot is needed, the user will get the new value at their next login.thanks buddy. I was in this same tricky situation. and ur post solved my prblem.
Is this a bug with solaris 10.
Later i discovered.. on Oracle documentation that.. there r sum parameters that needed to be taken care while pre-installation of Oracle binaries.
Here is the excerpts.
The Oracle installer recognizes kernel parameters set using this method, but it is now deprecated in favour of resource control projects, explained below.
As the root user, issue the following command.
projadd oracle
Append the following line to the "/etc/user_attr" file.
oracle::::project=oracle
If you've performed a default installation, it is likely that the only kernel parameter you need to alter is "max-shm-memory". To check the current value issue the following command.
# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project oracle
project: 100: oracle
NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
project.max-shm-memory
privileged 254MB - deny
system 16.0EB max deny
To reset this value, make sure at least one session is logged in as the oracle user, then from the root user issue the following commands.
# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -v 4gb -r -i project oracle
# projmod -s -K "project.max-shm-memory=(priv,4gb,deny)" oracle
The first dynamically resets the value, while the second makes changes to the "/etc/project" file so the value is persistent between reboots.
# cat /etc/project
system:0::::
user.root:1::::
noproject:2::::
default:3::::
group.staff:10::::
oracle:100::::project.max-shm-memory=(priv,4294967296,deny)
The Oracle installer seems incapable of recognising kernel parameter set using resource control projects, but if you ignore the warnings the installation completes successfully.Even this method works.

Solaris 10 Oracle 10g and semaphores
Hi, Can you help me,
We have Oracle installed on a solari 10 box, and I think we have a problem with the semaphores, currently the project is set as below, out of the box
user.oracle:100::oracle::process.max-sem-nsems=(priv,256,deny);project.max-sem-ids=(priv,100,deny);project.max-shm-ids=(priv,100,deny);projec
t.max-shm-memory=(priv,4294967296,deny)
The machine has 16gb Ram
Our SGA is 3gb.
The .ora file the processes is set at 1400.
Is the project set wrong above and what do I need to set it at, any idea how to work it out.
The reason I am asking the question as the system get's busy we get errors on the os station cannot assign semaphores.
I lloked up metalink, just can't get my head round it, somewhere it said you have to set semmsid, but according to an oracle metalink that was obsolete in solaris 10?

Hi,
i've a question about Oracle 10G and their SGA. When I do in SQLplus show sga, I get for example:
SQL> show sga
Total System Global Area 167772160 bytes
Fixed Size 1247900 bytes
Variable Size 58721636 bytes
Database Buffers 104857600 bytes
Redo Buffers 2945024 bytes
when finding other parameter I get always '0', this was not in other releases...
SQL> show parameter pool
shared_pool_size big integer 0
java_pool_size big integer 0
large_pool_size big integer 0
olap_page_pool_size big integer 0
SQL> show parameter db_cache
NAME TYPE VALUE
db_cache_advice string ON
db_cache_size big integer 0
It seems that I have no control over setting those parameters, I remember at installation time it gave a % of the pc memory would be used, has it something to do with that? Can you chose between the automatic SGA-management and setting it by yourself?
thanks
greetsHi,
I also find some trace files under my udump-dir, has this also to do with the SGA?

How to access MYSQL from Oracle 10g and vice versa
I will like to know how do I create a database link between Oracle 10g and MYSQL database on windows. I have been saddled with responsibility of ensuring the communications between the 2 databases and I have searched everywhere on google, I could not find anywhere where this is explain explicitly and made work.
THank youIn general Oracle offers 2 different products to connect from an Oracle database to a MS SQL Server. The first product is for free and it is called
As DG4ODBC is a generic connectivity based on ODBC it allows you to connect to many foreign databases as long as you have a suitable ODBC driver.It for example allows you to read from text files but also connect to foreign databases like MS SQL Server or IBM DB2. Due to this wide variety of foreign data sources tha capabilities of DG4ODBC are very limited. It only supports a few Oracle functions that it can directly map to foreign database equivalents. All other functions will be post processed. Post processing means that ALL records from the foreign table(s) will be fetched into the Oracle database and the result is then processed locally - so depending on the amount of data stored in the foreign database it might take a while.
To be complete here some notes to follow up:
This Oracle support note describes possible options you have to connect to a foreign database:
Document 233876.1 Options for Connecting to Foreign Data Stores and Non-Oracle Databases - For example - DB2, SQL*Server, Sybase, Informix, Teradata, MySQL
So you see, to connect from Oracle to MySQL you need to use the Database gateway for ODBC release 11.2 (HSODBC which was shipped with 10g was desupported in march 2008).
The Database Gateway for ODBC 11.2 (=DG4ODBC) license is included in the Oracle database license and it allows you to connect with a suitable 3rd party ODBC driver to a foreign database.
For your MySQL connection you only need to download and configure the MySQL ODBC driver from the MySQL web site. Once you can connect with the ODBC driver you could then download and configure DG4ODBC.
As you didn't post on which platform your Oracle database is installed, here 2 notes for common platforms:
How to Configure DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX Itanium) to Connect to Non-Oracle (Doc ID 561033.1)
How to Configure DG4ODBC (Oracle Database Gateway for ODBC) on 64bit Windows Operating Systems to Connect to Non-Oracle Databases Post Install (Doc ID 1266572.1)

Important differences between oracle 10g and 11g
Hi friends, can anyone tell me (pointwise) what are the major (and minor) differences between Oracle 10g and 11g.
Please point me to some documents if possible.
Thanks in advanceThe name of the link says it all: "top_features."
In short it is Oracle's list of what they have for marketing and sales reasons designated "top features."
It is not intended to be, and is not, a complete list of features. Often the features Oracle does not
talk about are the most important.
Let me give you some examples. I have never seen Oracle announce DBMS_XPLAN as a new feature
yet you should not run an explain plan without it. Neither have I ever seen Oracle announce the new
NO_DATA_NEEDED predefined exception. I have listed literally hundreds of new features you will not
find in Oracle's new features docs.
I did a presentation at OpenWorld this year as part of the unconference titled "New Features in
Database 11gR2 that Oracle will not announce." It was easy to prepare a one hour presentation with
little fear of being proved incorrect. As I turned out only one of the features I presented was mentioned
by Oracle.
You can find the presentation slides here:

External table in Oracle 10g and Windows server 2003 problem
I'm having a problem accessing an external table in an Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 server environment. The disk is remote (mapped) to the server. It's the usual access errors, kup-04001 or kup-04063.
I have the [seemingly] exact same setup in an Oracle 9i and Windows 2000 server environment which works perfectly. Services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
In the Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 environment, services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the mapped disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
This obviously effects mappings, deployments, etc.
Does anyone know if something changed in either the db or the os?
Thank you,
MichaelThank you for your reply.
Your proposal is the standard solution. As a matter of fact, that's how it is on my "old" system. Server "A" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM. Server "B" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM and is where the flat files reside. SYSTEM has full permissions on a disk local to Server "B". Database directoriies defined on Server "A" point to Server "B" remote disk. External Tables on Server "A" are defined with directories that point to Server "B" remote (mapped) disk. I have no problems with this configuration.
I'm having a problem acheiving the same configuration with Oracle 10g and Windows 2003. I guess I'm baffled over the fact it isn't working the same way as my "old" environment. Why shouldn't it? Oracle (and you) want me to start services as a specific user. It shouldn't have to be that way unless something changed in the way the database makes calls to the os or if Microsoft slipped something in with one of it's numerous security patches. -
