How better is solaris 10 tools compared to sun studio 7 forte tool ... is the compiler of better performance?

Are you asking about specific tools included with Solaris 10
or Sun Studio 10 ? If the latter, the newer version has considerable
performance improvements over the older one. If you're referring
to the gcc that's included on an extras/bonus CD, that's a more
difficult question to answer since there are quite a few factors
involved. I believe there are documents online with some
comparisons.
In any case, the latest version of our compilers is Studio 11 and
it's available as a free download from:

  • Exceptions not caught in shared library when compiled under Sun Studio 9

    I realize it's a fairly old version of Sun Studio, however if at all possibly we'd like to avoid updating to the latest.

    The problem is within our shared library a function calls another method within a try/catch block. This method then sometimes throws an exception which does have a matching catch block. On all other systems (Windows, AIX, HP-UX, Linux) the code works, the exception is caught and handled. On Solaris with Sun Studio 9 though, the exception is ignored and instead triggers an abort and core dump.

    The code which throws the exception is a static method of IGException which has a basic throw line:

    Source code is compiled with the following flags, none of which I could find any info to suggest affect this:

    Linking of the shared object is then done via the following, again nothing obvious that could cause issues. mapfile is an empty file.

    I did read somewhere mentioning to make sure to use RTLD_GLOBAL if using dlopen on the .so, but the test app is using ld to link the library.
    Does anyone have any ideas why with the Sun Studio 9 compiler these exceptions are not being caught? Based on the fact they are caught on all other compilers, i'm guessing this issue is with the compiler.
    Also, as a test it seems that if the shared object is not built as a 64-bit object, then everything works. The issue only seems to occur when it is a 64-bit object. Likely an issue with the 64-bit compiling?

    As the other poster pointed out, you need to link the shared library using CC, not ld. I should have noticed that error in the original post.
    Try using CC instead of ld in your link command. The CC command causes additional files to be linked into the shared library that are required for proper operation, and particularly for exception handling. I think that is the actual source of your problem.
    You should not use -L options that point into the compiler installation area, and when you use CC to link, you don't need to.
    I'm surprised that you seem to have a copy of libCrun.so.1 in the compiler installation area -- that should not be the case. The the only versions of libCrun should be static libraries libCrun.a. You almost never want to link with a static version of a system library, and absolutely never when building a shared library. The file /opt/SUNWspro/lib/libCrun.so.1 ought to be a symbolic link pointing to /usr/lib/libCrun.so.1, but if that were the case, the version command would have the same output.
    By any chance, did you install your compiler by copying it from another installation? If you do that, you need to use tar, not cp, to ensure that symbolic links are preserved.

  • SIGN in Sun Studio 11 (x86) running slowly

    Hi,
    I recently discovered that the sign (dsign) intrinsic function seems to be much slower than expected when using the -fast switch on an x86 platform. I compile with f95 -f77 -fast.
    Specifically, the intrinsic sign function is much slower than replacing the sign with a homegrown function which consists of an if-then-else statement (see below: function "fastsign"). However, when using -g or no optional compiler switches at all, the intrinsic sign function is slightly faster than the homegrown function.
    I'm experiencing this problem on Solaris 10, Sun Studio 11, Fortran 95 8.2 Patch 121020-02 2006/04/06 with an AMD Opteron CPU at 2.6GHz.
    As a check, I ran the code on an UltraSparc II 450MHz with Solaris 9 and the Fortran 77 5.3 2001/05/15 compiler, also with the -fast switch and found that the intrinsic sign and the homegrown function mentioned above take about the same amount of time.
    While it's not difficult to replace the uses of the intrinsic sign with the function I created, this problem only occurs when using the -fast switch.
    Any help anyone could give me would be appreciated. Alternatively, if someone could suggest an alternative library to use, that would work too.
    I realize that this post is sort of similar to a post by another user experiencing slow double intrinsic functions, so I apologize in advance if this should not be a new post.

    If you compile with -S, you will see that the implementation of SIGN is inlined from a function called __f95_sign. You can find that function in /opt/SUNWspro/prod/lib/libm.il, or in .../prod/lib/amd64/libm.il for the version used with -xarch=amd64. It's just a text file, so you can change it if you like. (It might be prudent, though, to make a different .il file just for your version of __f95_sign.)
    By the way, your implementation of fastsign assumes that a1 is positive. If a1 is negative, it will get incorrect results. It also assumes that a2 is not a NaN, but that probably doesn't matter.
    It's also possible that your timing results have been skewed by the compiler inlining fastsign. That inlining happens earlier than the inlining of __f95_sign, so the compiler can apply more optimizations. In some cases it will delete a loop entirely. I haven't looked at what it's doing to your code. It's best to inhibit inlining with -xinline=.

    In reading the click-thru license, I came across the following in section 5(i):
    "Software may contain programs that perform automated collection of system data and/or automated software updating services. System data collected through such programs may be used by Sun, its subcontractors, and its service delivery partners for the purpose of providing you with remote system services and/or improving Sun's software and systems."
    Does this mean that the software will phone home to the 'mother ship' and report on my utilization? It seems to be worded in such a way as to be able to send my hardware configuration and other things that I may not want to share with Sun.

  • Sun Studio 12 and ESX question

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me if I install Sun Studio 12 in a Solaris 10 x86 VM running on ESX 3.5 if my users will have any issues compiling with the AMD extensions? From what i gather at this point the the CPU features are not hidden from the VM so having an Intel based server is obviously out of the question and I must have an AMD unit, but i still have the question of whether or not the user will be able to compile with the AMD flags because they are running in a VM vs. a real host. Can anyone tell me if they have an environment like what i'm describing and what issues they might be having? Thanks in advance.

    From what I know about this kind of virtualization, you get [almost all] what CPU can give. If you are on AMD and boot Solaris kernel in 64-bit mode, then yes, you can compile with x64 extensions. But then again, it's better to ask on VMWare forums - it's not up to Solaris (or Sun Studio compiler) to provide instruction set, it's up to ESX.

  • After installing Sun Studio 11, libfsu.a in Sun Forte  6 is removed.

    I have Sun compilers 5.0 and 6.2 on my Sun Solaris 8 Ultra Sparc machine. After installing Sun Studio 11, some library files (e.g., libfsu.a in Sun Forte 6) from the old compilers were removed. What is wrong with my installation?
    Note that I install the different versions of compilers in separate directories.

    After the 1st failed installation of Sun studio 11,
    did you making sure that Sun studio 11 is not exist
    on your system before re-install Sun studio 11? The
    rule is you can have different Sun studio releases
    on the same system, but you can not have the
    multiple copy of the same release on the same
    system, even though they are in a totally separate
    directory. If Sun Studio 11 exist after 1st fail
    installation, you need to un-install it first before
    you re-start 2nd installation attemp.
    Installation of Sun Studio 11 should not remove files
    from older releases, but we know the case it did mess
    up package of the older release before.
    -NgocNo, after 1st install failed due to insufficient disk space, I did not uninstall Studio 11. After I deleted some user files to free up disk space, I run the install again, specified the same directory for installation, and just select Sun Performance Libraries. The installation seems to finished successfully. Perhaps this is one scenario where old versions can get messed up.

    C++ 5.7 will not give good results building Boost.
    Support for boost began with C++ 5.9 (Sun Studio 12), but you will get better results using the current release, Sun Studio 12 update 1, and better still with the upcoming release, Oracle Solaris Studio 12.2.

    I am installing Sun Studio11 on Solaris 9 SPARC Platform using -nodisplay option. The command line output is showing as installation is success.
    But when I see the install log file I am seeing the following errors.

    After that i've changed the config/SolarisPC file and tried a build with gcc 3.4.3 and f90 but I got
    ld fatal: library -lc not found.
    I have an old box from 2001 which was under HCL of Solaris 8 x86.
    The people at NCAR did not update their configuration files for Solaris 10 x86. The SolarisPC file is old and is using by default g77 as the fortran compiler. Could I mix gcc with f90 ? Which linker should I use in that case?

    There is no -ansi option in Sun/Oracle C, nor has there ever been. The compiler attempts to interpret it as -a followed by some other letters, which is why you get a complaint about -a. Remove the option.
    Depending on what you expect from the -ansi option, either the default compiler behavior or the -Xc option should work. I suggest trying the default behavior (no -X option). Refer to the manual for details.
    Always use the /usr/ccs/bin/ld linker, but you normally should not use the ld linker directly. If you mixing C and Fortran, use the f90 driver to do the linking; it knows what Fortran libraries need to be linked, depending on command line option. When linking a program using only C, use the cc driver to link. Some C command-line options require linking special system files; the cc and f90 drivers know the rules.
    To mix Fortran with C, refer to the Fortran Users Guide. I recommend using the Studio C compiler when mixing code, not gcc. The requirements of gcc are not known to the f90 driver, but it does know the requirements of Studio C.
    The schema for a mixed Fortran and C program is something like this:

  • Need help building boost_1_37_0 on Solaris 10 U6 with Sun Studio 12

    Ok, please bear with me here. I've tried many different sets of instructions, and haven't had success with any of them (including the ones at http://blogs.sun.com/sga/category/Boost).
    Operating System: Solaris 10 x86 U6
    Compiler: Sun Studio 12 (SUNCC version 5.9)
    Boost version: 1.37.0
    The ONLY part of boost that I need is regex. I've never built external libraries before and building boost on Solaris seems a rather daunting task. So, could someone please explain, as clearly as possible, how do I build the boost::regex library using SUNCC?
    I know this is a very broad topic, but since I haven't had any luck with any existing instructions that google turns up, alas I am here.

    First, be sure you have the current patches for Sun Studio 12. You can get them here:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/patches/
    Please install the current C++ compiler patch, the C compiler patch, and the common back-end compiler patch.
    You should then be able to build BOOST 1.37.0. The only problem I know of has been filed as CR 6767881, which results in an incorrect complaint about a constructor not being accessible. But I don't think that one affects regex.
    If you running into some other problem after patching the compiler, please post enough detail that we can investigate it.
    Questions about how to build just a portion of BOOST are probably best addressed to a BOOST forum.

    If you specify -S compiler option, assembly file will be produced and it enables you to look at the code assembler is complaining about. For example:

    I'm not too familiar with AMD64 ABI, but it is possible that you can't use 32-bit registers in 64 bit mode with some operations like memory (including stack) access.
    I was able to compile code with the following changes:

    The Sun Studio 12 http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/features/sysreq.jsp page mentions Solaris 9 and 10 1/06 are supported. Will Sun Studio 12 support Solaris 10 3/05 in the future?
    Why is Solaris 10 3/05 not supported or at least a patch provided to allow Sun Studio 12 to support 3.05?

    I have done a poor job of explaining. The Sun Studio 12 Release Notes do specify Solaris 10 1/06. Read them. Why would Sun specify that release unless Solaris 10 3/05 was not supported?     Sun has gone to the trouble to list Solaris OS 9 and 10 1/06. It is not a matter of applying patches to become 10 1/06 from 3/05. It requires an upgrade.

However, it is rather old, it predates Solaris 10 and having all latest patches installed is a must (see http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/patches/ss8_patches.html for list of patches available).
    If your final goal is to upgrade both OS and compiler, then switching to Solaris 10 and staying with Sun Studio 8 is a good idea; this way you minimize differences. After dealing with OS differences, you will be able to upgrade to Studio 12 update 1 (most recent release) more smoothly. Latest Sun Studio release is preferable because
    - its compiler better conform to the standard,
    - they generate better code,
    - whole suite works better on Solaris 10 since it was developed and tested on Solaris 10,
    - IDE is a huge improvement compared to Sun Studio 8.
    However, if you choose to stay with Sun Studio 8 (remember, end of support life is just one year away), I'd recommend purchasing support contract so that if you happen to run into a problem, it is solved with Sun Studio 8 patch, not in the next Sun Studio release (13?), which will be unacceptable for you.

    I found string::append(size_type num, char ch) of libCstd consumes too much cpu time comparing with stlport. Anybody knows if this is a known issue on Solaris 10 and Sun Studio 10? Or if I need to use special build options to build with libCstd?
