Solaris 8 install on Sparc without CD-ROM

I would like to install Solaris 8 on a Sparc 20 workstation that does not have a CD-ROM drive. I believe it should be possible to do an installation from another machine over the network. Does anyone have experience doing such an install? The host that I hope to install from is an x86 linux box, if that makes any difference.
Any advice / hints would be appreciated.

Isn't is easier to temporarily attach a scsi cdrom to the
sparc, just for installing the os?
But you can boot/install solaris over the network.
The boot procedure is documented here:
http://docs.sun.com:80/ab2/coll.40.6/REFMAN1M/@Ab2PageView/25227
You'll need:
- a "rarp" deomon that maps the sun's ethernet addes to an
ip-address.
- a "tftp" daemon that has a copy of the boot code for the
client. Stored under the hex encoded IP address of the
discless client with it's architecture name appended, like
this (example for a client at addr 172.20.0.72):
% pwd
/tftpboot
% ls -l AC* inetboot.sun4m.solaris.8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 24 Jul 23 2000 AC140048 -> inetboot.sun4m.solaris.8
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 8 Jul 23 2000 AC140048.SUN4M -> AC140048
-rw-r--r-- 1 root other 117204 Jul 16 2000 inetboot.sun4m.solaris.8
You'll find the "inetboot" somewhere on the solaris 8 boot
cd. (...lib/fs/nfs/inetboot ?)
- a rpc.bootparamd server, that tells the client where it
can NFS mount it's root filesystem.
An entry for a discless client named "disclessclient" looks
like this:
disclessclient root=server:/cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot \
install=server:/cdrom/cdrom0/s0 \
boottype=:in rootopts=:rsize=32768
Of cause the server must have the "Software 1 of 2" solaris
cdrom mounted and must "NFS export" it. Note, the discless
client needs "root" access to the filesystem; i.e. do not
map the root uid to nobody.
Bringing in linux to the equation complicates matters, for
sure...

    Try procedure outlined in InfoDoc 27794 - Process 1 - Booting remote cdrom into an interactive install. Although it uses Solaris 8 in the examples it should work for Solaris 9 as well.

  • Install Solaris 8 on SPARC system

    Hi,
    I'm new in Unix/Solaris. I tried to install solaris 8 on a sparc system, I downloaded (SOL-8-1_01-FCS-BIN-SPARC-V1 and V2) and i burned 2 CD as. On the sparc system is already SUNOS 5.6 installed. But each time I tried to boot the system it "hang" after the message:" starting rpc services: rcpbind keyserv nis_cachemgr done." What ever I type after this message has no effect at all. I'm allowed to format the disk (home user). The CD-rom player is attached to the Sparc but can not boot the CD. Is there anyone who can help me.
    I downloaden olso the pdf files but they were no use for me at this moment.

    Hello,
    you will have to go to OK prompt and then boot with CDROM.
    1.login as root and then type
    #eeprom auto-boot?=false
    2.reboot the system. the system will stop at the OK prompt.
    3. then type:
    OK boot cdrom install
    you should see Solaris install program and follow its instruction.
    And the error you see seems to be caused by bad network connection

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
    I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
    Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
    Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

    If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
    If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
    Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • Solaris 10 on Sparc 5 machine - Install isssues

    I have downloaded the Solaris 10 for Sparc ISO's and burned them to CD and now their ready to be installed. I'm assuming disk 1 is bootable. However, when I boot the computer up w/the cd in - I can't seem to get the installation to kick off. Is there something I must type at the command prompt? Wouldn't the install just take off knowing I have the cd in the computer upon booting up?

  • Solaris Install (Sparc) cannot find disk

    When I do a 'boot cdrom' from the OK prompt, it goes through installation, but stops about 50% in saying 'no disk detected, check connection, etc..'

    Any ideas?

    you get when you boot from the DCA floppy? According to some sun
    engineer that's a
    solaris bug (bug
    4344312), and the upcomming patches
    108822-02 / 110930-01 are expected to fix this problem.

    If your machines are using a local patch proxy, and the patch proxy has a contract then all servers talking to the proxy will get all the patches.
    If your machines talk directly to sun, then only the machines registered with a contract will get all patches. The ones without a contract will only get security patches.
