Solaris 9 - INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx (System Hangs)

Hello,
I am unable to boot into solaris 9 after I did a init 0. I did init 0 because shutdown -y -g0 -i0 did not work.
This is the error message I get
Hardware watchdog enabled
INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: SINGLE USER MODE
Type control-d to proceed with normal startup,
(or give root password for system maintenance):
After it asks for the password it HANGS.
I entered the password, but NOTHING HAPPENS.
I can go into sc console though.
I also rebooted using Solaris 9 cdrom in single user mode. Checked the filesystem using fsck, and no faults were found. I also tried creating a new /var/adm/utmpx file but that did not work too.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thank you,
Jacob.

Hello,
Check for /var filesystem usage,if it is not mouted as seperate filesystem then check for "/" FS usage.
There may be chances you get to have this problem if your FS is full.
If everything normal then follow the below steps, which solved similar kind of issues in the past for me.
Logon to the system and when you get prompt just run fsck on your root filesystem.
Check /etc/vfstab file to ensure that you are running fsck on correct fs name.
After completing fsck just say "reboot". The machine will boot normally.
In b/w is this machine disks are mirrored?? if so then you may need to choose the disks carefully before you run fsck.
thanks.

  • Var/adm/utmpx: value too large for defined datatype

    Hi,
On a Solaris 10 machine I cannot use last command to view login history etc. It tells something like "/var/adm/utmpx: value too large for defined datatype".
The size of /var/adm/utmpx is about 2GB.
I tried renaming the file to utmpx.0 and create a new file using head utmpx.0 > utmpx but after that the last command does not show any output. The new utmpx file seems to be updating with new info though... as seen from file last modified time.
Is there a standard procedure to recreate a new utmpx file once it grows too largs?? I couldnt find much in man pages
Thanks in advance for any help

The easiest way is to cat /dev/null to utmpx - this will clear out the file to 0 bytes but leave it intact.
    from the /var/adm/ directory:
    cat /dev/null > /var/adm/utmpx
Some docs suggest going to single user mode to do this, or stopping the utmp service daemon first, but I'm not positive this is necessary. Perhaps someone has input on that aspect. I've always just sent /dev/null to utmpx and wtmpx without a problem.
BTW - I believe "last" works with wtmpx, and "who" works with utmpx.

  • User logons not recorded in /var/adm/utmpx

I have recently upgraded my netra to Solaris 9.
User logins through x-win32 are not being registered in /var/adm/utmpx, hence they don't appear with who, last etc. Simple telnet logins are being registered in /var/adm/utmpx though.
This worked fine when the machine was running solaris 8; both telnet and x-win sessions were logged correctly.
can anyone tell me how to remedy this so that all logons are registered in utmpx on solaris 9?
    thanks

  • Solution Manager EWA - cannot create session in satellite system

    "Hi,
I want to configure EWA self service using Solman 4.0. I succesfully did the following :
    a. Maintained SMSY and create the required trusted RFC connections from SM to satellite system. All connection and authorization passed in SM59. I used SAP_ALL/SDCCN_ALL role and assigned objects S_RFC*.
    b. Assigned the system to a logical system.
    c. Created the a new solution and activate "Solutions Monitoring > Earlywatch Alert"
    d. Activated and maintained required RFC in SDCCN in satallite system.
My problem is that the create EWA alert request (Red Flag with a specific session number ) coulnd be pass to the satelitte system even though all the trusted RFC and authorization is set. When i execute the SESSION_REFRESH in the satellite system, the session is not created.
Did I miss out any steps. Can any one share any help ?
FYI, there is no connection to SAPOSS yet, so i did not manage to run RTCCTOOL completed, but i doubt this is required for EWA self service."
I  have the same problem as Solution Manager EWA - cannot create session in satellite system
tried all of solutions,  but it does not help... Created the CM (high) for SAP, but get 1 response for 1 week from them:(

    Dear Sapbcer,
Have you tried the following option :
Execute SMSY and from the Server entry Execute the "Read System Data Remote" option in change mode.
Save the data captured and then try using Refresh Session Task from SDCCN of the satellite system. Do select the RFC for Solution Manager while performing this task.
    Hope this helps.

In Windows, setting the Environmental Variable sometimes DOES NOT WORK.
The -Djava.io.tmpdir=C:\temp setting must be made in the server properties of the oc4j in order for it to work.

  • Cannot unmount /mnt after installation & system hangs on shutdown.

Once I exit chroot and run 'umount /mnt' as per the beginner's guide, I get the message:
    umount: /mnt: target is busy.
(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))
I am fairly new to Arch and Linux in general. I've installed Arch in 2 other machines with no such problem.
The root of this whole issue is that my laptop hangs when I shutdown. It hangs on either one of these lines:
    kvm: exiting hardware virtualization
    or
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Synchronizing SCSI cache
I can't find anything by googling so I am pretty much clueless. I thought the issue stemmed from my not unmounting /mnt properly after the installation.

I'm not sure why your /home is mounted at /mnt (that's where your root partition should have been mounted, with your /home then mounted at /mnt/home), but you should not have anything left on /mnt at the end of the installation. The Beginners' Guide tells you to run this command:
    umount -R /mnt
This should unmount everthing on /mnt.
I did mount /home at /mnt/home, my mistake.
    Running
    umount -R /mnt
gives the same result as in the OP.
BUR wrote:Does it keep giving you errors if you try to unmount everything by using /dev/sda* instead of mountpoints? Start from the end (root partition should be touched only after everything else).
    Do you mean
    umount /dev/sdxy
    I ran
    umount /dev/sdb3
(this is /home) and it is not mounted. I ran
    umount /dev/sda3
(this is /) and I get the same error.
    According to
    mount
, /dev/sda3 is still mounted on /mnt and udev is still mounted on /mnt/dev. That's the only things still mounted on /mnt.

    Hello Ferhan,
the output of the AboutBox is indicating that you are trying to run SAP GUI for Java on Solaris 10 with x86 CPU. Unfortunately, the library required to be loaded is complied for SPARC. Please have a look at the system requirements part of the manual coming with the installer of SAP GUI for Java or [note 959236|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/959236].

Check /etc/init.d/dtcp , i guess it would be copyrighted to fujitsu-siemens if its the fujitsu dtcp. You can also9 do a pkginfo -l SMAWdtcp, which seems to be the name of the fujitsu package. Hmm, odd name for a Fujitsu package.
Actually i found the following Fujitsu bug:
A0559315 Fix flood of messages like dml_send DB_PS_Udp_Con_Remove_List failed
    - caused by trying to send the message to a node that is down.
    .. which seems rather familiar.
Its fixed with fujitsu patch 901199-08

  • Javax.servlet.ServletException: Cannot create bean of class

    People,
    HELP!! I am getting desperate!!!
I am a newbie when it comes to TOMCAT, but i have been using Blazix before.
My current system is using APACHE/TOMCAT on a Solaris machine and I keep hitting the same problem. I have gone through the archives but the only thing it states is to check the directory which i have done.
    I keep getting:
    Error 500
    Internal Error
javax.servlet.ServletException: Cannot create bean of class MyClass
The code used to work on the Blazix server so i am assuming it is something to do with a config parameter somewhere - but i do not know where. I have checked the directory/package structure and they seem to work. It even serves it when they are html pages not jsp, but obviously wont use the bean. :(
I can post code if necessary.

  • Sun logs: /var/adm/messages vs. /var/svc/log/*

On Solaris 10, is /var/adm/messages still the "gold standard" for startup and shutdown log messages, or have the critical logs moved to /var/svc/log/$service_name?
It's not like I can't look in one or the other, but I'm trying to gauge the relative importance of the two.
Is there another location that I'm overlooking?

During boot the kernel might generate a few messages about drivers and buffers and stuff. This is stored in a kernel buffer that is visible when you type 'dmesg'. When syslog starts up, it dumps the contents into the messages file so you have a static copy. I don't think this behavior changes between Solaris 9 and Solaris 10.
For the actual startup "scripts" (SMF, /etc/init.d, /etc/rc?), Solaris 9 and earlier didn't have any sort of capture location. It was common for scripts to print to STDOUT/STDERR, and that would be delivered to the console only. Since many of the scripts are running before filesystems are mounted read/write, it didn't try to save the output.
Now with SMF, it does more work to capture that output and you can find that in the service log files that you mention.
So none of the logs have really moved, but you now have more logs than you did before.

    Thanks.

    Hi Tom,
Thanks, but at this point, I've rebooted, checked and double-checked more times than I'd care to count...:(
Since I can see the NMEA strings when the GPS module is hooked-up to the USB port, I guess I'll assume there's some reason why the
AMA0 UART has not been released, or that the GPS receives some different signals through the TTY that it's not seeing through the AMA0.
As I mentioned, when I use 'cat /dev/ttyAMA0', it just hangs, like it's getting no data. I'll keep looking...
         Thanks for your help,
              Dave
