Solid state drive choices for a T420
Do I have this right? If I want a solid state drive in a T420 my choices are: an mSATA drive in the mPcie slot, a 7mm SSD drive in the ultrabay (and lose the optical drive), or replace the HDD with a 7mm SSD. Anyone know if there is a significant difference in boot time and speed between the 3? I put an OS on an mSATA drive in an E530 and it is fast.
mSATA or 9.5 mm SSD in either the main hdd or ultrabay.
Ultrabay and main hdd bay all have SATAIII, mSATA is SATAII. Boot time between these 3 options are pretty much the same from my tests on my T420.

I would like to go to a SSD and was wondering if this notebook supports SATA III or 6GB/s transfer rate. The HDD that is in there is a Seagate ST9500420AS ATA and research shows it has a 3gb/s transfer rate. I don't know if I should purchase a SSD that is 3GB/s or 6GB/s. Don't know if the motherboard supports it (SATAIII / 6GB/s)?
Thoughts? Has anyone upgraded to s SSD. Also, how/what did you use to transfer the old drive or did you just reinstall Windows 7?
Thanks,
Harry

View Solution.Hi,
What you are seeing is the generation 2 SATA HD attached to port 0 and the generation 1 SATA optical drive attached to port 1.
The HM55 chipset is rated for SATA II.
If you are going to buy a SSD, then look at the prices differences between SATA II and SATA III for the size that fit your pocketbook. I did some benchmarking of SATA III devices on SATA II ports and only noticed about a 6-10% improvement compared to SATA II or SATA II. Your mileage may vary.

Rick,
When you get a chance.... DSLReports is off line: their SQL server decided to take its indexes and access to data. Power. Not enough of the right kind of UPS. Same happened to StorageReview's "Drive Reliability Database" about 8-9 yrs ago.

SSD: Loading CS5 plus other little monsters might matter.
Lots of small I/Os
latency of 1/100th where nanoseconds replace those "long" milliseconds
System: Small and fast.
DLLoyd even goes for short-stroking drives to get and maintain highest I/O
The new 10k VRs hit 200MB/sec - I still use them and still find them useful, long lasting, feel responsive with whatever I ask of them. I know they get criticized and "cost too much"
Just bought a new WD Black and yes it is better than the 2008 model I was using.
600GB 10K $200 vs $150-220 for WD Black. your choice
I can destroy a 7.2k drive, I have brought ever 10K drive back after a simple WD Extended Test in Lifeguard.
I don't really care about $$/GB or I wouldn't have just bought Intel 128GB $149
Database: the pros put the index in memory and page fix (virtual volumes in memory; cache; hold disk drive index in memory). Caching storage has been around for almost 40 yrs.
Today you can use SSDs as front end cache to hold DB indexes and frequent data for web servers and such adn use slower secondary storage.
SSD + SAS + 4TB storage
Separating the system from data: #1 must
Having data on array: been what I use
I put a large photo library on 2 x 10K VRs vs SSD and couldn't tell much difference (SSD is soundless of course) But my WD Blacks make as much noise and run 15*C hotter than those 10K (not what you expect?)
While 10K and 7.2K are in the 140-180MB/sec range, they are in 3.0 to 12.0 ms seeks, not 0.01 ms.
People wonnder why shrink a drive to 2.5" (or why not go down to 1.8".
How long does it take to reposition a disk head? how often? the 10K VR travels on outer tracks at 70 MPH. Really trying to fly off into space.
It uses one step to find the "zip code" and then another DSP to find the "house."
True of any high density perpendicular recording mechanism.
And of course while the Raptor-X tried to find a home with famers, Cheetah buyers, the WD 10K line has more of a home where servers and small form factor drives - and 100s of them - can fit in a rackmount server I imagine.
Anyway.... if SR and DSLReports can drop out of site due to power and hardware failure and loss... we can learn some and hope to protect our own data and investments. -
I saw a description of using a solid state drive for the system and certain other programs in order to create a snappier response. My iMac certainly seems to drag at times and the drives don't look prohibitively expensive anymore. The article was about macbook pros, so I don't know if the iMac is as good an example. Anyhow, any thoughts?
JimIMO, SSDs are too expensive, too small, and adding one to an iMac isn't a trivial undertaking.
As for improving performance, more RAM is better.

Setting Up SSD Solid State Drive for Cache...Help!
Hello,
I am trying to configure my system to do really heavy special effects using After Effects and other programs. I bought a new computer with specs below and a Solid State Drive for the cache as recommended in the White Papers. I plug the SSD into a port on top of the machine. I must have it configured wrong because I keep getting the message "disk cache folder cannot be the root of a volume." I don't know how to configure this correctly so my work will use the SSD properly. Can someone walk me through this? Nicole The SSD is a Seagate SSHD 1TB hybrid drive that is supposed to boot and perform like an SSD. The motherboard is an Asus X79 and the processor is an i7 4820k (Ivy Bridge E) Thanks!

What's a good solid-state drive for my Pro 1.1, c.250-500gb?
I only in the last months learned about the XP941 as an option, and for all Mac Pro models.
And that was in the middle of a long thread that led me to look further.
SATA Express meets the '09 MacPro - Bootable NGFF PCIE SSD ( 1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page)
So the adapter is cheap $24-52 versus say Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD ($295) which is not even bootable in 2006/7.
No need for $15 Icy Dock. Does not take up drive bay or any of the 6 SATA II ports.
Yes up until last fall/winter the 840 EVO was fine, I have half a dozen ranging from 128GB up to 500GB and they work fine.
In the past I ended up using the Sonnet card just for data (graphic library for Adobe and iPhoto) and not the system.
Options are always good to have. -
Solid State Drive (SSD) Questions for G4 "Sawtooth".
Below are some questions concerning using a Solid State Drive (SSD) in a G4 "Sawtooth".
Would a controller card need to be installed for an SSD to work in this machine?
Would the G4 be able to operate in Classic mode with the SSD?
Would the G4 be able to boot into OS 9 with the SSD?
Should the SSD be used only for booting and applications, with user data stored on another drive that does not use SSD technology (such as an ATA or SATA drive)?
Should only 50% of the drive space be used, in order to ensure optimized performance?
Would the G4 only be able to use the first 128 MB of drive space of an SSD that has a capacity greater than 128 MB? If so, would either of the below cards enable the G4 to read the entire drive?

One like this:

Would the G4 be able to operate in Classic mode with the SSD?
Yes.
Would the G4 be able to boot into OS 9 with the SSD?
Depends on the controller card, but with the linked card, it shouldn't be an issue.
Should the SSD be used only for booting and applications, with user data stored on another drive that does not use SSD technology (such as an ATA or SATA drive)?
Smaller capacity drives will limit file storage, and keeping OS and applications separate always improves performance, regardless of the drive type.

SSD's can be filled further, but should maintain 20GB or more for virtual memory.
Would the G4 only be able to use the first 128 MB of drive space of an SSD that has a capacity greater than 128 MB?
A controller card removes that limit.
If so, would either of the below cards enable the G4 to read the entire drive?
Those controllers will work for and allow use of large capacity ATA drives. -

Considering a MacBook Pro... solid state drive for high altitude?
My 2.5 year old 13" MacBook just crashed its second HD in five months! I think it's time for a new setup, and I'm considering a MacBook Pro.
I'm an amateur photographer, and I use my computer almost exclusively for Photoshop, editing & printing large photos.
Here's what I need:
- LOTS of space for graphics files
- speedy to keep up with Photoshop (not editing movies, though)
- large, high resolution screen (but doesn't have to be 24")
- durable... I'm tired of crashes, and our altitude (above 7000') makes me consider going to a solid state drive... Would I get considerably less space to store files that way?
- portable would be nice, but less important than durable... I'd buy an iMac plus a mini laptop if Mac offered something like the 9"!
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!iMac + MacBook Air (or 13" MBP?)!
haha! That would be nice, but probably overkill for my purposes. If we went with the iMac instead of MBP, I might look for a glorified handheld for internet access and photo & document viewing (at least) on the road.
Kappy wrote:
Your altitude is not a relevant factor. Typical notebook hard drives (not SSDs) have a maximum operating altitude above 30,000 feet.
That's reassuring, as far as bringing a new computer up here. We hadn't had any crashes in the last decade, but we've had three since we moved up here a year ago. (The first was my brother's laptop when he came for Christmas.) We aren't throwing around our computers by any means. The only other difference (besides environment) is more usage hours, as I've started using Photoshop, and more JPG & PNG files on the disk. None of those would have affected my brother's laptop, though.
Would the iMac have better resistance than a laptop to whatever might be causing the crashes, whether it's the environment or usage issues?

External solid state drive for scratch disk?
After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
Thanks!

Gunn GraphicsChris, here is the most recent one from right after I added the additional scratch drive. Thanks for taking a look at it!

Solid State Drive For Macbook Pro mid 2012
Hi Apple Users,
I would really appreciate some advice, a link would be great too.
I am using a mid 2012 macbook pro with 16gb ram. After trouble here and there, slowing down here and there to the point I'm about to crack - solution = Solid State Drive.
I use a variation of 2D & 3D Programs to design with which include photoshop, maya, modo and Mari. My laptop just can't cut it most of the time and I need whatever I can so I can get jobs done without any lag, freezing or spinning ball while my laptop tries to catch up.
I have browsed around for A solid State drive but what I found is confusing or at least I get somewhat lost in my search of plug and play. My built in hard Drive of 500gb has 350gb spare so going for a 250gb SSD seems the sensible option as I use my external HD to store my files, music etc.
I don't want to open my macbook and fiddle too much so any suggestions which are near enough 'plug and play' would be great. I am aware I will have to take the casing from my macbook but I want an SSD that -
- Fits straight into my macbook pro from out of the box
- I can use my time machine backup to put onto my new SSD without trouble and Can continue getting my design work done.
Budget wise I don't want to spend over £250 and that reminds me I would like to purchase from A uk website or retailer.
Please Point me in the right direction of what SSD to buy.
Really Appreciate your advice.
ThanksAny SSD with a SATA formfactor of 2.5" diameter and a thickness of 9.5 mm will be compatible with your MBP. Another possibility you might explore is OWC.

SSDs are indeed expensive, but is is not my place, nor anyone else's, to tell you how to spend your money. To dismiss your query by expressing personal bias is a disservice to you and the purpose of these forums.
I have installed in my MBP a Seagate SSHD (hybrid), 1 TB in capacity. The cost is a very modest premium compared to a conventional HDD. Boot and shutdown times are dramatically faster than before but it will not give the same performance as a SSD in processing resource intensive applications. This is simply to give you an additional alternative to consider.

Has anyone ever installed OWC 1.0TB Aura Solid State Drive and Envoy Storage Solution for MacBook Air 2012? Did it work out?

Solid State or Thunderbolt for scratch drive?
My new MacPro is a speed demon - but the internal drive is TINY. I work on huge PShop files, and even with a secondary external drive designated as Scratch Disk, I get frequent promps that boot disk is almost full (its not -just virtual memory overload). So I think the thing to do is have a dedicated (external) scratch disk, that is keep mostly free. I would think that a Solid State drive would be best for speed. But they are $$$. Wondering if I would notice the difference if a Thunderbolt drive was used instead. They are comparatively more affordable, but abut 130mbps as opposed to around 400mbps.
Anyone using a similar setup?
Suggestions?
ThanksYou can still go with a Thunderbolt2 interface with a Thunderbolt case that supports PCIe and add SSDs, I would try to get the new devices, you need less, they are 3x faster than "traditional" SSDs.
Mac Pro => Thunderbolt2 => TB2 expansion case with PCIe slots, using
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/External-Drive/OWC/ThunderBay-4 $449 (no drives) but dual TB2 interface
and then using the same blade technology as your internal unit you now have, meaning you should be able to use 2+ and get 2.4GB/sec. for your scratch. Basically extending your boot drive with scratch that is at least as fast or a multiple of that.
