Solutions for 2 editors working on same projects

I work as a lone video editor in a magazine publication/web design company, producing videos for our various website. I will soon to be joined by a second editor.
I would like a solution where we could easily work on each others projects from our own machines when needed.
I have looked into Edit Share, ideal but expensive, wondered what other solutions there might be out there?
Could you just use a large network drive as the capture scratch for both, would there be other issues to consider?
Many thanks
John

Final Cut Server has nothing to do with sharing files between computers or shared storage. It is a cataloging and organizational program. It helps keep track of things, but it doesn't supply bandwidth or data management across a wire. The data management in FCS is organizational only.
If you have the money for a SAN, don't look at Edit Share. I had a one month demo and I sent it back after a week. Couldn't handle capture and print to video at the same time. Couldn't even capture from two computers at the same time. You have to buy their capture module (basically a buffer) which costs extra. The overall price back then was about $56K for 6 TB.
Check out Rorke Data Systems and talk to Jim Boas. He can put together a nice package for you at the best rate around. My company is about to buy a 16TB RAID 6 SAN from them, complete with management software, and iSCSI bridge. Can get towers AND laptops connected. Used it, works perfectly. They have a managed SATA version now as well, not too pricey. The package we are getting is under $45k. But storage is cheap these days, and we are paying for connectivity to 12 edit stations. If you only have 2, that's $10k off the top. If you only need say, 6TB, that's another $10k off the top. Have tried the NAS option. Listen to Shane. It doesn't work well. Sure, some people may have tested it and say it works, but you have to wonder what they did to test it, and did they really put it through its paces. You can't test shared storage on an edit suite by importing footage and screwing around in the timeline. That's not editing. That's screwing around. If you're serious, you'll need a managed, shared storage network, independent of your LAN. DO NOT USE A TCP/IP NETWORK!!!

  • Working together with the other two editors on the same project

    Dear All,
    My situation is that I have three editors working together but not in the same place, and all of us have our own FCP. In short, my question is how we can work together.
    From my understanding, I need to Recompress two copies of the media files by using Media Manager and store the files into two portable firewire hard drives to give them to the other two editors first.
    Then I really have no idea how we call exchange our bin, sequence and project after we work on it. In Avid, I know I can just copy the bin and manually put it into project folder. How about FCP?
    Thanks in advance.
    King

    Nice suggestion.
    I've been researching digital asset management theory and practical applications for years. While doing so, I've been studying practices at production shops where several artists or technicians work on the same projects using remote connections and a variety of creative applications like Photoshop, Flash, and video editors. Without centralized network storage that is deliberately built into the hardware systems, all I have come across are complex processes that require careful policing and stringent adherence to filenaming and file placement conventions as well as mutual commitment from all parties to communicate openly, precisely, and on some kind of dependable schedule.
    All of these ad hoc management processes are doomed to failure because, just by the burden of the paperwork, they impede the flow of the job. And yet without them, all parties rapidly become confused and work is lost or duplicated needlessly, making a joke of the whole thing. As soon as one party is allowed to sidestep or ignore one step in the elaborate process, the entire process can be discarded.
    My limited experience with joint editing is to divide the project into sections and marry the segments collaboratively instead of trying to allow everyone to work the whole project at the same time.

  • Two working on same 'project'??

    I hardly ever work with other editors.
    We have a project.  I've made a backup drive.  Two of us need to be working on the same project at the same time.  I'm wondering where I can find info on the protocol for sharing the same 'project' back and forth.
    We'll have both drives set up exactly the same (same name, folder hierarchy etc.).  I notice they been collecting a lot of stuff in their 'library' files.  We can't obvious share a 60 Gig Library file back and forth.
    They've got their final cut - on a single 'project' file.
    Is there any way we can move that 'project' back and forth between the two setups/libraries?
    Or ... what might be the properly protocol to use so we can both be working on this at the same time?  They are on a killer deadline, so I can't be suggesting anything that's going to cause a crash and burn.  (They got a phone call this morning, in the edit room, and while they were talking on the phone someone hijacked their computer, you could see the cursor screaming all over the place as whoever it was was trying to pull out personal info ... I arrived in the middle of the hysteria and quickly yanked the power cord out of the wall ... evil evil.)

    Everything and more you'd want to know about worked in a shared environment.

    Basically you use transfer libraries. You have to use external media of course. When you're ready to send the other editor something you make a new library, copy the event and projects into it without any cache material. ZIP it and upload it. Large projects I've been working on have transfer libraries of 100 MB or less.

  • Solution for job work material

    Dear All,
    Please provide me what is the best solution or procudure for job work material (for production), also confirm me what effect of component price in Bom.
    Thanks

    Hi vivek!
       Thanks for your reply..
    But what is the need of creating PO's.. I am simply receiving the material(non-valuated) form the customer and do some service in it and send it back to him.. I will process this via sales.. But my question is whether should i create a material master for each time i receive a new material since its one time job and weekly we r receiving around 100 new materials.
    Thanks,

  • How to work on same project both in studio and on the road?

    OK, so I do all my work on a macbook pro. My home setup includes an array of external hard drives but I would like to work on my project while Im traveling this weekend.
    My project has several different sequences...SO, how can I export all material from one sequence on to a portable firewire drive, work on it on the road(same computer,different drive), then once back home continue where I left off with my normal drives back on line?
    I don't want to export ALL the scratch disk due to size, just what's being used on a particular sequence.
    Is this scenario possible? I assume I will use "media manager" and I assume if I do ANY rendering that those clips will need to be transfered back to original drives from the portable?
    Ideas?
    Thanks so much, I really enjoy this forum!

    Can't be done. If you media manage only the footage used in the cut, edit, then try to link your sequence to the full sized footage, it won't. FCP looks at REEL, TC start and stop and duration. If anything doesn't match, then it won't connect. If you want to edit on the road, you either need to bring a copy of the FULL clips used in the sequence (an option in the Media Manager COPY function...just don't choose DELETE UNUSED MEDIA), or you can RECOMPRESS (again, in MM) all the the footage to a smaller size (offline RT) and edit that. Then reconnect to the full res version when you come back.

  • Multiple users working on same project

    Hi,
          I'm working on a project that will involve 2 (maybe more) engineers. Generally a single folder will contain a projects specific vi's and our standard vi's and a single engineer has all control. Our engineers are in different locations so I was wondering if anyone may suggest a way or point me to some information to manage this.
          We have LV 7.1,8.2 and 8.5 available
           Thanks,

    Search these forums & the NI site for Source Code Control  & Configuration Management tools in Google also.
    You can use MS VSS, Tortoise SVN, Clearccase, Perforce, etc., with LabVIEW.
    LabVIEW 7.x does integrate well with any of the SCC tools. But LV 8.x seamlessly does so; so, you can manage your project code well from within LV itself.

  • Automator- Workflow for time worked based on project #

    Hello All,
    Trying to use automator to automatically do this workflow:
              I receive email that lists a project number as well as other info but proj. number is most important.
         I do the work etc..,
    Then generate an email sending an invoice for my time worked and other details based on that project number to ONE emaiil address; thus my invoice for payment.
    Goal:
              Thus keep track of which projects I have completed and sent an invoice for...
    Can anyone get me started. I don't see how to get automator to pull that project number out of that email message to begin.

  • Best storage solution for FCP HDV projects?

    What is the best storage solution for Final Cut Pro HDV projects (i.e. internal or external drives, SCSI, external firewire drives, etc.)?

    Don't forget you can also use the "Send to Tape" command to send your footage back to miniDV HDV tape. This isn't the ultimate solution, but is a good way to cheaply "backup" large projects to inexpensive tape without killing your drive storage with every project.
    Here's a new feature request for Media Manager... Forget that. I'll start a new post for it.

  • Work around for request scope for Listitems-working

    Hi finally I got some work around solution for Listitems working with request scope, if any suggesion welcome, below is the small code of jsp and bean.
    <h:selectOneMenu id="ownerListMenu" value="#{pc_trackingSearchPage.trackingSearchPageBean.selectedOwner}">
                                            <f:selectItems value="#{pc_trackingSearchPage.trackingSearchPageBean.ownerList}" />
                                       </h:selectOneMenu>
    I used onPageLoadBegin() and onPagePost(),
    first on PageLoad - I am loading the List from DB, its displaying perfect.,
    than on pagePost -> I am setting the value ->ownerList.add(new SelectItem(getOwnerListMenu().getSubmittedValue().toString(),getOwnerListMenu().getSubmittedValue().toString()));
    ------->here is the getOwnerListMenu method.
         public HtmlSelectOneMenu getOwnerListMenu() {
              if (ownerListMenu == null) {
                   ownerListMenu =
                        (HtmlSelectOneMenu) findComponentInRoot("ownerListMenu");
              return ownerListMenu;
    so this way the List will not be empty what ever the user selectes it will be their, as i am setting key and values as same, so in submit method,
    i am getting the selected keys and going back to backend getting results displaying on other page,
    --->this will work only if they don't need the list , if they want to display the list again, they have to load freshelly.
    I hope it will give some solution for request scope, if the data is huge and not to save on the session for navigation purpose.
    suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

    Apperently iTunes 11 is not affected (Apple stil makes iTunes11 for the 14 yr old Microsoft XP OS, but not for anything PPCs can run. Go figure)
    "Next door" to Steve was metaphoric, he lived in Los Altos, about 15 miles away, but he cast a big shadow!
    On 9.2.1/10.4.11 differences, some time in the past someone selected 'save file' and checked the box 'don't ask again' on your computers dialog box. That's why you're not given a choice wih the file downloads. I would think that selection should be able to be reversed.
    iTunes 9.2.1/OS10.4.11 puts those downloaded URLs into the Music Libary of iTunes, no matter if it's opened directly, or you click on the file on your desktop. You can create a new playlist, highlight the selection in the Music Libary, and drag it to your new playlist to keep alll the steaming URLs together. NOTE, this only creates an alias, the URL copied by iTunes must remain in the Music Libary. You can then delete the the files on the desktop, if you want. I did multiple stations this way in 9.2.1, they all show in either the new playlist created, or in the Music Libary, and remain after the desktop files are deleted and trash emptied.
    You can switch sations by double clicking them. Another note, all the URLs were all from vtune.
    I hope this helps.
    PS, I forgot how clunky Tiger is compared to Leopard...

  • Can an editor and I work on the same project, at the same time in PPCC?

    I'm trying to figure out if two people can edit a project in live time... I'm currently struggling with the 20gb cloud limit for my projects and I think I'm just going to bring an in house editor into the mix.
    Can he and I edit the same project from a NAS drive?
    ---Trav

    As far as I know, "regular" Premiere Pro does not have any provision for the kind of file locking/unlocking required for 2 people to edit the same project... so if YOU save an edit and your other person saves after you, your edit is going to be overwritten and lost

  • Can TWO Editors Work On The SAME Project Separately ??

    Have Premier CS3 on XP
    We have a heavy edit this week for a film festival.
    Can one editor work on part 1 on one PC machine...and another editor work on part 2 on a mac...and then somehow... be able to transfer the mac timeline over to the PC machine for final work.
    What special gottcha tricks do I need to know???
    We can get both editors to use the same clip names. They will be on different drives...but the same structure...the same directories and filenames exactly on each drive. The Mac version would copy the master clips folder im thinking. Both machines...same raw materials.
    Im just concerned that we may forget to do an important step... and not be able to successfully bring all the edit timeline pieces over so they point correctly.
    Thanks for your critical tips and tricks
    Susan

    Should work OK, as long as you're using the same media source for both platforms/projects. In other words, you need to be working with something like DV AVIs or QT DV MOVs with both. One platform will suffer because it's not as tuned to work with the other platform's media, but it's doable. You could capture the same media to each platforms native media (DV AVI on PC, QT DV MOV on Mac), but relinking once you transfer from Mac to PC will be a nightmare. If you're working with something like P2 MXF, though, this will be a breeze--just point to the proper directory and everything will be fine. This is a major benefit of PPro's native handling of such media, IMO.
    You could also copy the media over, wholesale, from Mac to PC--I think this is what you're saying now that I'm reading your post again. I'm guessing that in this case, both machines would NOT be working with the same material originally, correct? Just note that you may have file system incompatibilities going from Mac to PC. Mac uses the HFS file system, whereas your PC is probably using NTFS. FAT32 is common to both systems (can be read/written on each) but you're limited in supported file sizes to less than 4GB. If you've got an HFS-formatted external drive you'd be moving to the PC, I recommend
    HFS Explorer. It will allow you to mount and extract data from your HFS-formatted disc on the PC. There is also MacDrive, which is more tightly integrated with PC (disks show up as native filesystems in Explorer) but it's not free. Time might be an issue, though, and MacDrive might be the better option. There is a free limited trial, I believe.
    Beyond that, just import the Mac-generated project into the PC-generated project, and relink your files. BE SURE TO DO THIS ON A COPY OF YOUR PC PROJECT, just in case the unthinkable happens. From there, the projects should be successfully merged, and you can proceed with final assembly. I would suggest keeping your additional timeline items to a minimum in the Mac project (ie. audio, graphics, titles, etc) just to eliminate possible transfer headaches. I really don't think you'll face an issue, but it could wreck your day if something goes haywire.
    Finally, and most importantly, test this out if you value your sanity. This is not something you want to simply "hope" works without any sort of field trial. This should work perfectly well, but I assume to responsibility if it does not!
    Good luck...

  • Can multiple people work on the same project at the same time with Creative Cloud for Teams?

    We have a project we are working on, and since it needs to be done in record time, multiple people need to be able to access the most current version. Is there a way to work on one project concurrently, like on Google docs?

  • How to work on the same project on two machines at the same time and also exchange progress seamlessly using Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014?

    We are working on a film project on Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. Two editors are working on the same film project (same pproj file ) on two machines. As a result the bin structure and the file structure is exactly the same. We even bought two licenses for the respective machines to make matters simple (at least we thought it would).
    Now when we share a sequence between the two machines, every time we have to import and re-link media. Also each sequence import comes with its own set of files, which are actually already present in the project. Basically the new sequences are looking to re-link the media to the original/ source files only and are completely ignoring the file structure present in the project.
    In all editing softwares, timeline/ sequence sharing is a very common practise when working on multiple machines. Why is it so tedious in CC 2014? Every time we share a sequence between the two machines the media gets doubled and tripled in the project. As a result the project file size is increasing perpetually. Already Premiere CC 2014 is extremely laggy and slow, and this stupid bug is making it more difficult for us to finish our work on time.
    Has anybody ever faced this issue? How do we solve it? We are willing to try out any workflow that you can suggest.

    Concurrently working on the same project it requires a specific implementation in all editing programs like Avid's Unity/ ISIS shared storage. That's what you are simply not considering. none of your issues would be any problem if your projects resided on a commonly accessed server or something like that. Check respective hardware solutions.
