[Solved] Adding Network Printer Arch+Openbox

I've Arch with openbox installed. I need to add the network printer so I can print stuff at my university without switching to windows (hate windows :S). I went to IT guys at my school and they gave me printer queue information and they have no clue how to install network printers on Linux. This is the instruction file they gave me:
To add printer support, from the console type "printtool". You have to be in X-windows to use this application, it does not run in the console.
Click on "Remote Unix (lpd) Queue".
Names = $$$$
Spool Directory = /var/spool/lpd/lp0
Remote Host = $$$$
Remote Queue = $$$$
Above instructions are for Red Hat Linux and I do not have printtool. I was reading about cups, lpd, lpr and but I'm confused, I do not want to setup network printer I just need to print documents from the network printer that has been already setup in my uni network. Any help would be appreciated.

1) Your printer already has a cups server. Edit your client.conf and be happy.
2) Your printer allows remote lpd and you want to print without cups. Use LPRng instead (install from AUR). Since most applications are preconfigured for CUPS this will be more work and you'll have to know what you are doing.
3) Your printer allows remote lpd and/or some other protocol. Install and start the cups server, add the network printer and start printing. I already mentioned this in my previous post.
By the way, the wiki mentions this (except for the unsupported LPRng)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … g_workflow
There are two ways to setup a printer.
*   If there's a CUPS server running in your network and sharing a printer you only need to install the client package.
*   If the printer is connected directly to your system or you have access to an IPP network printer then setup a local CUPS server.

  • Need Help Adding Network Printer

I am trying to add a network printer on a Solaris (Sun OS 5.6) system. I am doing this using lpadmin as outlined in volume 2 of the system admin guide.
The printer appears on the system, but when I try sending a print job, I get the message 'Segmentation error - core dumped' and nothing prints on the printer.
I have added the printer to the etc/hosts and can ping it o.k.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

There is info missing from your post that I like to have when considering these issues, so here is what I'm assuming:
    You used the command:
    lpadmin -p printername -v /dev/null -m netstandard -o dest=printerhostname -I contentype -T printertype
(note: I like -m netstandard instead of
-i /usr/lib/lp/model/netstandard because I'm lazy! they mean and do the same.)
You have the latest version of patch 106235 for lp, which I believe is -09
This is perhaps not the first printer or first attempt at adding a printer on this host.
Possibly this machine was upgraded from a previous version of Solaris?
If you can find the core file (it may be where you issue the lp command or in the /var/spool/lp/tmp directory), you can use the adb command to at least extract the name of the binary that is coring:
    adb core
This could be several things that could require anything from a spool clean to an remove and reinstall of the print packages. Any more details you can provide? Perhaps the output of lpstat -p printername -l? Does this happen with any printer you create?

  • Automator--Adding network printer

    Hello,
I am trying to create an Automator service to connect to a network drive. In order to set up the connection, I have to do the following:
System Preferences>Print&Fax>(Add new printer +)>Right click/ctrl click on toolbar>click "Customize Toolbar...">Drag "Advanced" onto the toolbar...etc.
The part where Automator errors out is clicking on "Customize Toolbar" after right clicking/ctrl clicking on the toolbar.
Is there a better way to go about adding a network printer? I have to use the Advanced method because the only way to connect is using the form: //domain name/printer name
    Thanks!

    Hi,
It is strongly not recommended to use Windows 10 Technical Preview for production PCs. As Windows 10 Technical Preview is for testing by now.
Besides, regarding the printer driver, we could download it from the manufacturer side and install it in compatibility mode.
Further, if you have any suggestions or issues when using Windows 10 Technical Preview, please take use of Windows Feedback Tool:

  • Adding network printer

I have a macbook pro. I am trying to add my network printer from work (HP LaserJet 5000 Series PCL) so I can print from my desk. The problem is that I have not been able to do it. I did some reasearch and I downloaded the HP drivers. I typed in the IP address and nothing??
I am not sure what I am doing wrong?
The only thing I can think of is that the network printer is attached to my work computer, I'm using Windows 2000, and I don't have administrator privilages? Not sure if this is even a factor when I am trying to connect my macbook pro.
    Any help would be appreciated.
mac book pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, so to confirm, the printer is not "attached (directly) to your computer" but is connected to the network?
When you say everything grayed out, you mean on the Sharing tab? If so, that's not a privilage issue, as I have admin rights on my work PC and it's grayed out for me too. But on mine, the radio button for Share this printer is active - is yours?
Also, click on the Ports tab, and confirm that it's an IP address and a Standard TCP/IP port that's checked. If there's a Windows network address (e.g. letters+numbers, no periods), then that's what you need to enter as the location in printer setup on your mac.

  • [SOLVED]Shutting down in Arch (Openbox + Fluxbox)

The other OPs thread got solved....but my issue didn't. So here it is again.
I have openbox and fluxbox installed on Arch:
        1) Openbox stops responding on clicking either Reboot or Shutdown from the menu. Only option kill X.
        2) Fluxbox doesnt have a care in the world...it keeps working...menus and all
Debian has Fluxbox installed...and shutdown and reboot work as they should.
    My sudoers file has this
    inxsible ALL=NOPASSWD: /sbin/shutdown
My menu file in openbox has
    sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now
    for the Reboot and
    sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now
    for the Shutdown.
I think this is specific to Arch because the same thing works well in my Debian install.
I do have acpid installed...so all is not lost. Its just that it pisses me off that this doesn't work for me when it does for everyone else.

    Ok I feel like a f*ing idiot now !!!
I checked my sudoers again and the problem was this. After I enabled my user name to have NOPASSWD to /sbin/shutdown, I had another line in sudoers down below which was
    %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
That was negating the statement above. But I am still surprised how it worked 3 times before deciding not to.
Anyway, I have now removed the username line and simply uncommented this one
    %wheel ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
Now I dont need to worry about entering a password anywhere

  • Error -9672 while adding networked printer

While trying to add a networked HP 3600n color laserjet to the printer list (via Bonjour) on a 10.5.6 G4 Macbook I always ended up with 'an error occurred while trying to add the selected printer' with a -9672 error code. After much deleting of printers, resetting the print system etc. I found that the problem was with the actual printer (another OS X machine turned up the same error). I did a cold reset on the 3600 (hold the tickmark button while the machine starts into its initialization phase after power on, then select COLD RESET from the menus) and re-entered its network settings and the problem on the OS X machines went away.
Posted here in case anyone else hits this. This same error message and error code appears in other circumstances and these are dealt with in other posts.

That is a common error, did you download & install the latest hp drivers, generally the ones that come on the CD are out of date!?
Might try these two after reinstalling the latest driver and repairing Permissions with a reboot afterwards...

  • New laptop won't print wirelessly to a network printer

I just bought a new laptop running windows 7, and it wont print to my photosmart c5580 that is networked and wired through my computer (desktop) and shared running windows XP. I also know that my computer has to be on for this to happen, I also know that the printer is networked correctly cause I have another desktop that prints fine wirelessly through the network. The laptop recognizes the printer as well as other files that are being shared, I have also downloaded the windows 7 driver for that printer, as well as change the name of the workgroup to match the rest of the computers on the network. Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
There is a challenge sharing a 32 bit driver from XP to a 64 bit version of Windows 7, as a software installation defaults to 64 bit. The exact opposite happens on a 64 bit XP to 32 bit Windows 7. The solution is to use Add a device, and check the x86 box when prompted. Here are the links to HP documents which should help you resolve the issue:

  • Arch - OpenBox - Windows Network Browser

    Hi,
I'm using archlinux + openbox in my work and i'm very happy with it, performance is near awesome, ofcourse we always want more and more
The only annoying thing that has nothing to do with arch is network browsing, i have read that openbox will in the near future implement a built-in network browser, i have tried pyneighborhood and xsmbrowser but really, if you have 1 share, 2 shares, ok it work...but if you go to clients and are constantly changing networks it sucks.
What i would want is something like windows \\pcname\share, login and that's it, no more no less. Nautilus is good on that regard with smb: but it's heavy on resources (i use thunar)...so fellows
    Any idea...
Thanks for your time in advance.

Gigolo seems nice, i see i can create bookmarks..will test
I know Openbox is a WM but it seems that the new version will have built in network browser....i was searching to see where i have read that...but cant find....
I think like in fluxbox that comes with panel and openbox don't... i think in the new version they will include by default a network manager in openbox.
If you see XFCE (DE) don't have a network browser either...the last time i used it, i come with pyneighborhood.
Regarding command line, i prefer to have at least something like bookmarks, pick and roll, thanks anyway.

  • [SOLVED] Network printing stops with 'Filter failed'

I have a problem with printing over the network. What I want to do is printing from my wireless connected laptop with the usb-printer (HP PSC 1315 aio) that is connected to my computer (that functions as the cups-server). On the laptop, I added the printer with the address ipp://192.168.1.33:631/printers/hp_psc_1310_series. After printing a (test)page, the progress stops with ‘Stopped “Filter failed”’. The print task is send to the computer because I see it there, but I think on the computer is going something wrong.
    - Printing from the computer is no problem!
    - It isn’t the firewall, because I stopped iptables.
    - I deinstalled cups, deleted all configuration files, installed cups and added the printer; no success.
    - Avahi is active; I restarted it already (the wiki says that can help, but no success).
    - I tried it with another laptop, but with the same result.
    - I have the printer marked as ‘shared’ and the server as ‘Share printers connected to this system’.
Does someone know anything else to try to get it working?
Last edited by Hannus (2013-11-26 18:33:13)

This afternoon I tried printing over the network again, and it worked! I have no idea why it is functioning now, maybe there was an update of CUPS or another package that made it work. I did the same as last time, but now the printer was simply reacting as he should.
    I'm happy with this!

  • Adding a network printer

how do i connect a network printer to my Macbook pro?

Thanks for responding.  Yeah I have checked that.  I can actually get as far as clicking the add printer, then selecting wireless, i then slect the printer that I want which is listed then tells me it cannot find the correct drivers. I even tried installing the original software disk to the printer and it still told me that it cannot find the correct drivers and is not compatable.  I did this very same thing to my daughters laptop which has vista and it worked just fine.  Her version of vista is a littile different. Is it possible that certain printers are not compatable with certain vista programs.  I have never heard of that though.  Thank You again for responding.  I will look forward to any other help you could give me.

  • Adding shared printers? Network printer not showing up in list

I have a network printer not showing up in the Bonjour Printer Wizard. There is not a place to add a printer to this list. Does my network printer need to be installed under the Windows side as well, or can I share it using Bonjour? I'm confused as to how the shared printer program works. Also, my Adobe "print to pdf" option shows up as a printer, but how do I change the file destination location? It doesn't give me an option to change the "saved to" location. I am using these printers through Parallels in AutoCad, and that should be the only reason I will need to share printers. But I am in AutoCad a good deal of time, so I need to know how to quickly print my drawings.

    Welcome to the forums!
You don't say if you installed after downloading the Printer you deleted, but I suspect it's one not showing, and that you need to reinstall.

  • Adding a Network Printer - 2012 Essentials

I am using small business server 2012 essentials and looking to purchase a network printer. The issue I see is that many of the printers I have researched do not have drivers for essentials. Some will list out R2, but I do not have that, only Essentials.
Is there a workaround to installing a printer or do the windows server 2012 drivers that most manufactures use work for the Essentials operating system. I already tried to install a Ricoh printer and used the windows server 2012 and R2 drivers, tried to manually
install the drivers, but did not work. Thanks

    Hi ChrisCJK,
I agree with Cliff Galiher’s viewpoint.
Please browse the web site of printer manufacturer, and check if you can get a latest version of the driver. Then monitor if it can help you to add the printer for
    Windows Server 2012 Essentials.
Meanwhile, please refer to the following article. It provided the details of installing Network Printer to Windows Server 2012 Essentials. The printer is different
with yours. However, may give some thoughts.

  • Adding a network printer to a Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit laptop

I have a Deskjet 5150 printer conntected to a desktop running on Windows XP.  It is set up as a shared network printer.  When I attempt to add this networked printer to my laptop has Vista Home Premium  Edition 64-bit OS, I get a message that states "The server for the 'hp deskjet 5100 series' printer does not have the correct printer driver installed.  If you want to search for the proper driver, click OK."  I can not find the *.INF file that is needed.  I have downloaded the proper driver to the desktop and my laptop, but I do not know where to "browse" in order to locate the file.

Hope this helps, it worked for me
I used the shared printer name "printer" in printer propertys for mine.
Alternative method 1. 1. Click on the Windows icon>>Start Search>>Type printers and press enter. 2. Click on 'Add Printer'. 3. Click on 'Add a local printer'. 4. Click on 'Create a new port:'. 5. Do not change the 'Type of port:'. By default it is selected as 'Local Port'. Let it remain the same. 6. Click on 'Next'. 7. In the small 'Port name:' window, type the following under 'Enter a port name:'
NOTE: The names should be exactly the same. They are case sensitive.
      \\computer name\printer name
For instance: If computer name is 'John' and printer name is 'HPprinter', you have to type the exact name with all the characters including spaces. Hence in this case it would be the following:
    \\John\HPprinter
    8. Click on OK.  9. Click on Next and complete the Wizard. (It will now install the printer and driver) I used the 7400 series driver for my 7550 but it works.10. Try to print a Windows test page and check the printer functionality. 1 Click on the Start icon on your Desktop.2.Select Control Panel.3.Double click on the Printer icon.4.Select and Right click on HP Photosmart 7550 Printer series icon.5.Click on Properties.6.In the Properties Windows click on Print Test Page Tab it will start printing a Windows Test Page

  • [SOLVED]Can't print to my Brother DCP-7065dn after upgrade to systemd.

    Hi All,
I have a pure systemd installation and I'm having issues printing. I have a Brother DCP-7065dn which works well on my Ubuntu laptop with the drivers availible from Brother. I downloaded and installed the drivers for this printer from the AUR and added the printer to cups (both lpd and usb). When I print a test page cups reports that the job completed succesfully but the printer does not print. Not sure what is wrong. Has anyone else had printing issues after upgrading to systemd? Any thought on how I can get this printer working?
    Thanks
Edit: BTW. Brother offers deb and rpm packages for their Linux drivers. I installed the deb packages on an Ubuntu machine and I can print over the network (lpd) with no problems. I also installed the brother on may arch system using the wrong drivers just to see what would happen. Using the DCP-7045N Foomatic/Postscript driver I can communicate with the printer (progress) but printing a test page results in the printer spitting out a lot of blank pages. I can also print to an HP from my arch laptop with no problems. So the issue seems to be with the drivers for the Brother DCP-7065dn from the AUR. Not sure how I'm going to fix this. I can't install the rpm or deb packages on my machine. and I don't want to switch to a red-hat or debian system if I can avoid it.
Final Edit: SOLVED! I need to learn to go back and read comments. In the AUR there was a comment regurding this exact issue. I needed to enable multilib repository and install lib32-glibc. Now it works. \(^_^)/

Did you add the printer using Bonjour or did you select one of the IP protocols? If the latter, then you cannot use IPP. The Canon MF driver supports LPD or HP Jetdirect.

Updated to Canon driver 10.2.0, printer is still not appearing in the list.
If you mean that after you change the USE menu to "Select printer software" and the Printer Software window is empty, then try restarting your Mac. This can rebuild the printer list.
    Matthew Poor wrote:
Both Canon MF background items are running according to Activity Monitor.
The new MF v10.x driver does not install or use the MF Background process. So this process is a leftover from a previous driver. I would therefore recommend you trash the older driver files and run the v10.2.0 driver installer again.
Depending on the version of driver you had installed prior to upgrading to Mavericks, the name of the folder can be different but will reside in /Library/Printers/Canon. Here you will see BJPrinter and IJScanner. Leave them alone and just remove the one or two that have MF in the name.
You then need to navigate to /Library/Launch Agents/ and trash any Canon plist file. Then restart the Mac and run the Canon MF v10.2 installer again and then see if you can add the MF8350.
