[Solved] Alsa Config not sticking: Muted at reboot

Hi everybody,
When I reboot, I have to manually unmute alsa each time.
I have tried alsamixer in the terminal and using M to unmute Master and PCM ( the only two I need).
Also the commands: (I used this before on Debian)
amixer set Master 100% unmute
amixer set PCM 100% unmute
I've Googled a bit as well as searching the forums,
Is there an "Arch Way" of editing the alsa.config file? or maybe something else i'm missing.
Thanks

Also, run
# alsactl store
as root, after setting the volume to your desired levels..

  • Mountain Lion, VLAN (.1q) Config Not Sticking After Reboot?

    Greetings folks -
I'm experimenting with 10.8.2 on my Mac Pro along with a managed Ethernet switch.  Said switch supports .1q VLANing, as does ML.  When I follow the appropriate steps to configure VLANs on the Mac:
Sys Prefs -> Network -> Manage Virtual Interfaces
and set the switch port to trunk those same VLANs, everything works fine.  Until I reboot the Mac.  Once I do that, nothing from a networking perspective is intialized or configured at all.  The hostname is the default "localhost", none of the VLANs are configured, and no IP addresses are set.  Further, the Network Sys Pref pane won't open.  It does nothing but beach balls, and I have to "Force Kill" Sys Prefs.  The only way I can return the machine to booting properly is to use the networksetup command on the CLI to remove the VLAN configuration.  Once I do that and reboot the Mac, it comes up fine.
I did some digging into the system.log to see if I could find a difference in the boot messages when VLANs are configured and when they aren't.  When the machine boots normally without VLANs configured, this line appears in the system.log:
    Jan  1 11:13:35 localhost kernel[0]: com.parallels.kext.prlnet 7.0.15107.796624 has started.
    Jan  1 11:13:35 localhost kernel[0]: com.parallels.kext.vnic 7.0.15107.796624 has started.
    Jan  1 11:13:35 localhost kernel[0]: com_parallels_kext_prl_vnic: created vnic0
    Jan  1 11:13:35 localhost kernel[0]: com_parallels_kext_prl_vnic: created vnic1
    Jan  1 11:13:35 mrfreeze.local configd[18]: setting hostname to "mrfreeze.local"
    Jan  1 11:13:35 mrfreeze.local Parallels[225]: Parallels networking sucessfully started
    (yes, I have Parallels installed)
However, when I boot with VLANs configured, that configd line never appears in the log file:
    Jan  1 11:10:46 localhost kernel[0]: com.parallels.kext.prlnet 7.0.15107.796624 has started.
    Jan  1 11:10:46 localhost kernel[0]: com.parallels.kext.vnic 7.0.15107.796624 has started.
    Jan  1 11:10:46 localhost kernel[0]: com_parallels_kext_prl_vnic: created vnic0
    Jan  1 11:10:46 localhost kernel[0]: com_parallels_kext_prl_vnic: created vnic1
Jan  1 11:10:46 localhost Parallels[225]: Parallels networking sucessfully started
I tried knocking configd into verbose mode with the -v flag in its .plist file, but that didn't result in any extra logging.  I'm not sure where else to look or what else to try.  It appears to be a bug of some sort in the order in which things are started, but I'm not 100% positive of that.
Any ideas?  Any other info I can provide?
    Thanks.

hello Jason, I am having the same issue using VLAN set up through a managed ethernet switch. Please could you tell me how to combine the 802.3ad Ethernet and VLAN. I have no expertise in network set-up so the simpler the better :-)
I don't know what kind of managed switch you have, but the steps are pretty simple.  On the switch, you need to figure out how to create a LAG or Ethernet bundle of 2 Ethernet ports, with LACP enabled.  Cable those two Ethernet ports up to the back of your Mac Pro or other Mac with 2 Ethernet ports.
Also on the switch, you need to assign a VLAN, or several VLANs to that new LAG.  Again, you'll need to figure out how to do that on your switch.
On the Mac in the Network System Preferences pane, choose the little gear at the bottom of the list of interfaces, and then Manage Virtual Interfaces.  Choose the + and add a New Link Aggregate.  Put both Ethernet interfaces into that LAG.
Choose the + again, and add a New VLAN.  Pick Bond0 as the interface from the drop down, then name the VLAN (anything you want) and assign it the proper VLAN ID #.  That # has to match whatever you set on the switch.
That should do it.  Save everything and wait a sec or two while the underlying BSD OS gets its wits about it and starts sending and accepting .1q packets.

  • [SOLVED] ALSA firmware not loading properly with kernel 3.8.6-1

    Hi All,
I have a E-MU 1820 card + breakout box that have been working beautiful under Archlinux for years but now something happen.
It still work OK under windows (dual boot same computer).
Normally during boot all indicators on the breakout box blink and then only thin show is clock setting indicator. But now all the indicators still blink but instead it is a -12 dB indicator that light up and not the clock settings and no sound.

    Thank you mich41!
It looks like a kernel bug.
I downgraded to 3.7.10-1 then firmware loaded OK and I could play sounds.
Upgraded to 3.8.6-1 then the firmware fail to load.
Something looks not ok with 3.8.6-1.
    Best regards,
    Christer

  • [SOLVED] Compiz config not working

It seems my Compiz suddenly stopped reading it's config files.
When running CompizConfig everything is set up fine, the decorations, moving, resizing, my commands etc, but when I do 'compiz --replace' compiz starts with no plugins.
I looked into my ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig and I found two files:
    ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/config
    [general]
    profile =
    integration = true
    ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/Default.ini
This one seems to store everything I set up in compizconfig.

What's wrong? I took a wild guess and tried copying the contents of Default.ini into the config file but that didn't change anything.

Ok, self-solved. I must append ccp to the compiz command for it to take config files into consideration:
    compiz --replace ccp

  • [SOLVED] ALSA - Microphone Not Working

My mic on my computer has worked up until today, when I tried to install PulseAudio, to try it..
Then, I didn't like PulseAudio, so I took it back off...
and now my mic doesn't work..
I'm not too sure what info you need to trouble-shoot this..
So I can give any code that you need, just need my mic working. Lol

ALSA is installed, reinstalled even. Dunno what more I should have to do.

  • [solved] fdisk alignment not sticking on /dev/sda1

    Hey everyone.
There are several statements that SSDs should be properly aligned.
So i went ahead and aligned my Intel X25-M following this guide on the OCZ forums.
After partitioning the SSD with fdisk using proper alignment, i confirmed via 'fdisk -l' and 'fdisk -lu' that the alignment is correct.
My next step was installing Windows Vista X86_X64, where AS Benchmark again confirmed a proper alignment (128 K as suggested by Theodore Ts'o or 512 K, as suggested in the guide linked above, i tried both).
However, when i checked with fdisk again to confirm the alignment once more, the alignment for /dev/sda1 seems to have shifted. I also get the message, that partition 2 doesn't end on a cylinder boundary.
Right now, it should be 32 heads and 32 sectors per track to result in a 512 K alignment. But fdisk shows 255 heads and 63 sectors/track for /dev/sda1, which is, from what i understand, the standard used by linux. The other partitions seem to be just fine.
I've read that there might be an issue with partition 1 shifting but i also heard it could by avoided by starting partition 1 on cylinder 2 instead of cylinder 1. Unfortunately, that doesn't change anything for me.
Can anyone tell me what i did wrong?
    Regards,

You can avoid it by using /dev/sda1 for /boot or swap. You should still start /dev/sda1 in cylinder 2 though.
Also, remember to adjust the offset of all the logical partitions in expert mode. Otherwise they'd start sector 32 as you can see in the bottom code tags in my first post.
For example, here's my current installation:

  • [SOLVED] ALSA input source not not saving on reboot

Just in case anyone else has a similar issue....
An annoying recent development was the ALSA input source not being restored on rebooting. In particular in my case the internal digital microphone on my Dell XPS m1330.
The audio chip is Intel-HDA, reported as "STAC9228" by alsamixer. The primary 'sound device' is alsamixer is listed as PulseAudio, with Intel HDA being an additional device (F6). Under the F4 capture tab, there are 3 input source options, the first kept on resetting to 'Mic' instead of 'Internal Mic 1'. Mic is the front analog mic jack, and as a result there was no Skype microphone functionality each reboot. Easy enough to use alsamixer to reset to the correct input when required of course, but annoying nonetheless.
I tried deleting asound.conf, ensuring alsa was (and wasn't) running as a daemon and using alsactl store, all to no avail. I already have !snd_pcm_oss and !snd-pcm-oss in my rc.conf, and Skype is not controlling any levels.
Finally solved by adding 'alsactl restore' to the startup programs (gnome-session-properties).

[UPDATE: Internal microphone no longer working under kernel 3.1.1-1 and alsa 0.24-3.]
    Sigh.

  • ALSA: Sound not working when webcam is plugged in. [Solved]

I'm using the out-of-the-box sound setup (ALSA, nothing else). My sound card setup (including the USB webcam with mike):
    mrkline $ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [VX5000 ]: USB-Audio - Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000
Microsoft Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 at usb-0000:00:1d.7-2, high speed
    1 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfdff4000 irq 42
I'm aware of what the wiki says on the issue, and tried it to no avail. I created /etc/asound.conf and gave it the following contents, but as you can see from /proc/asound/cards, the webcam still initializes first sometimes.
    ctl.dmixer {
    type hw
    card Intel
What additional steps can I take?

Update: As mentioned above, the current wiki contents were useless. However, I discovered a fix and will be adding it to the wiki:
I noticed several of the more hands-off repos (namely Linux Mint and Ubuntu) contain an ALSA config file at /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. In it, among other things, are lines that ensure USB cards are not selected as the first sound card. Creating a file at /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with the following contents fixed the problem:
    options bt87x index=-2
    options cx88_alsa index=-2
    options saa7134-alsa index=-2
    options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
    options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
    options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
    options snd-usb-audio index=-2
    options snd-usb-caiaq index=-2
    options snd-usb-ua101 index=-2
    options snd-usb-us122l index=-2
    options snd-usb-usx2y index=-2
    # Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
    options snd-pcsp index=-2
    # Keep snd-usb-audio from beeing loaded as first soundcard

Hello everyone my iPhone 5s sounds stop working.i did not do anything it just stop working when I tried to turn on my music player all the sounds is not working I already check the volume and it is not also muted :( what happened can anyone solve my problem please

    Hey Kirby17,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are not getting any sound from the speaker, follow this article.
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5180
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • HP pavilion dv7 microphone won't stay muted on reboot

I have a HP Pavilion DV7 P/N-A1L97AV with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I am having a problem with both the integrated microphone array and external microphone not staying muted when I reboot the computer.  I can mute system sounds and reboot that is still muted when I reboot, but not the microphones.  The only way to keep them muted is to mute all.  The reason this is a problem is that when I reboot, if I forgot to turn sound down I get feedback until I can mute the microphone.  I have not been able to figure out what has caused this but it is quite annoying, especially since I use the laptop with events for playback.  I do use the microphone for recording classes forweb-based classroom for elementary schools so I need it operational.

Have you tried starting it without battery?
    Have you reseated memory.
Try removing 1 stick of memory and see if it will start. If no joy, switch the memory sticks and try the other one.

  • Firefox works fine until after lunch. Then it will not open, unless I reboot. Am at work, & I shouldnt have to do that, NEED a fix.

Everyday its the same thing. By midafternoon, Firefox will not open unless I reboot. I am at work, and have too many things open all day to stop and reboot for a browser, when I also have IE. I prefer Firefox, it is set as my default, and have many passwords saved there that are not saved in IE. Surely there is a fix for this? I have removed it, downloaded it again, followed other suggestions from your site, but still have the same problem. If I leave a window open all day long, it will still work for me, and thats what I try to do. However, invariably, there will come that accidental second that I hit the red X at the top and totally regret it! Please help!

I had tried this before, but went ahead and tried this again.
I clicked on "reset Firefox". Firefox closed, but did not come back up. When I tried to open it again, I did receive a message that said Firefox is running but is not responding, that I couldn't open another window without stopping the processes on the other page.
I never got a window that showed me the information that was imported, or a place to click finish.
Since I don't believe this completed, I don't believe my problem will be solved.

This problem has only appeared in the past few days before that I had nio problems with itunes. Firstly I discovered that I could only open Itunes once after reboot - thereafter it would not reopen until I reboot again.  I have spent considerable hours yesterday talking to the Apple help by phone and tried all there suggestions including of course reinstalling itunes amongst other things.  Eventually I thought the problem had been solved when I discovered that I could suddenly open Itunes repeatedly without rebooting.  After a short time I then discovered that the reason it was working agai was that I had rebooted with the internet disconnected and itunes would open repeatedly as normal provide I left the internet disconnected.  When I reconnect to internet the problem resurfaces. Hello all and kglad, I have to use the old drag and drop code on my movie clips, but the problem is when I drag the movieclip to the area on my .swf file once i release it, it sticks to the hand mover.
I am encloseing the action script I am using could someone or kglad tell me what is missing from the code so that once it is released it will not stick, see code below

    circle.onRelease = function(){
    stopDrag();

there's nothing wrong with that code but it would be better to use:
    circle.onPress = function(){
    this.startDrag();
    circle.onRelease = function(){
    this.stopDrag();
but that won't solve your problem.  there must be something else going on like a depth issue.  you may need to use swapDepths() to bring your circle under the mouse when releasing.

  • Mail port settings not sticking

I'm having trouble with port settings not sticking in mac mail.  When I start Mac Mail (v5.1, running in Lion) the program won't read mail in my iCloud account because the port settings are incorrect (port 143).  I click on the "Use SSL" box, which changes the port setting to 993.  I save the changes and everything works fine until I quit and restart the program.  The port settings revert to 143 and the SSL box is unchecked.  The issue, obviously, is that the changed settings are not being saved.  I deleted the iCloud IMAP account and reinstalled.  It reinstalled with the correct 993 SSL setting, but as soon as I quit the program and restarted, it reverted to 143, no SSL.  Anyone have an idea what is going on?

To solve the problem of mail port seetings not sticking required deleting the Accounts.plist in this mail directory:
