[SOLVED] ATI (open source) Graphics Issue due to Upgrade

Shadowrun Returns finally loaded (after ages) but performance was abysmal whereas I was playing it with the same settings flawlessly yesterday. L4D2 was "laggy" while clicking in the interface and on the opening video, and then I got sound with a black screen and had to kill the process.
I believe it is related to a recent update in one of the following packages (at least I did not have this problem yesterday, and I updated first thing this morning):
[2014-05-06 08:32] [PACMAN] starting full system upgrade

My card shouldn't be using the r600 driver (mine is a Radeon HD 5770) and it's quite possible those errors have always been there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have similar problem. I have removed steam-runtime libstdc++ libraries (I could not start game with them), but performance is very low. I use open source ati drivers (lib32-ati-dri also installed) and have Radeon 7770. Some time ago I could play Super Meat Boy with good performance, but now even intro is like 5 FPS which is obviously now what I expected. I am rather casual player so I can't say when (after which update as I presume) performance were redused. System is up-to-date.
I noticed that if I use AccelMethod "EXA" hardware acceleration do not work, with "GLAMOR" I have artefacts (e.g. with title bar and context menu) in KDE, but it run at normal SMB at normal speed. According to Arch Wiki there is a bug in X11 related to GLAMOR.

  • X11 and open source applications issues

I have a brand new iMac 20 w/ OS X 10.4.8/ Core Duo 2.16/ ATI X1600 w/ 256 mb vram/ 1 gb of system ram. I have been using open source systems for almost two years and would like to continue to use some of the applications which are provided for Macintosh. When attempting to install any of the X11 applications, I get a message saying that I need to have X11 installed in order to install and run the apps. I downloaded the Apple X11 1.0 installer because I did not see X11 on my system. When trying to install it, I got a message saying that it could not be installed because there is a more up to date version already installed.
So, the installers for applications such as, Open office and Gimp Shop, do not see that I actually have X11 installed and they will not install because of it. I do not know enough about OS X to work through this issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    zeusx64

I did not see another version of X11 but I did go into the installation of the optional items and did not see it listed. I am fairly well versed in using computers, so I am not a complete noob but I am fairly new to Mac itself.
I have FreeBSD experience, which in itself, gives a bit of X11 experience.
That said, I have already looked for needed packages to install, tried to install and as I said before, I recieved the message during the attempted install of X11, which said I already had a more up to date version installed.
If I have by chance missed something along the way, feel free to provide a link to the needed package.
I am open to learning all that I can and realize that we all are in a never ending process of that learning.
Thanks for the replies and I hope we can figure out what I have not on my own.
I will check my mail when I am at home after work.
    Thanks again.

  • [ATI open source driver, laptop] Screen not refreshing properly.

Hi guys, I've been using ATI Catalyst driver and everything was working well until I decided to switch to open source driver.
Now I have strange problem. My screen is not refreshing properly, I mean, for example I use Facebook and I decide to read something in other card in browser and after I switch cards I can still see some of the facebook page elements, window title does not change. After I move cursor over page elements are refreshing. When I scroll page, even a little bit, it refreshes as well. Or I use terminal, I type some command, press enter and sometimes screen doesn't refresh and I can't see output until I try to resize window or select text (which I can't see...).
Sorry for not the best description, I will give you screens tomorrow because today I can't.
My graphics card is Radeon HD 5400 Series and I use ASUS X52J laptop.

tomk wrote:Install radeonhd and run X with no xorg.conf - it will autodetect the driver.
The radeonhd works.  It's the radeon driver that doesn't work, I tried no xorg.conf and it still used the vesa driver.

  • Ati open source driver dual head problem

I have an AMD FirePro M5950 video card in my laptop. Using the open source ATI driver I can't seem to get my dual monitor setup working and GDM won't even start. However KDM is working.
Still, the problem I am having with KDM can be viewed in the following image.
The display somehow starts a little left from the middle of the screen. When I continue moving the mouse to the right the mouse appears on the left part of the screen.
How can this weird offset be fixed? Do some log files help, which one?

append "nomodeset" in the bootloader, before booting, maybe that will fix the issue.

  • ATI open-source driver and modelines

Since the 8.3x versions of fglrx do not work with custom modelines, I have tried to switch to the open-source driver. However, I still seem to have a problem with modelines. Here is the relevant section in my xorg.conf file:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
    ModelName "LCD Panel 1280x768"
    HorizSync 30-82
    VertRefresh 40-70
    Option "dpms"
    # 1280x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 80.14 MHz
    Modeline "1280x768_60" 80.14 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync
    EndSection
Here is what I get when I start X (excerpt from Xorg.0.log):
    (--) RADEON(0): Virtual size is 1280x768 (pitch 1280)
    (**) RADEON(0): *Mode "1280x768_60": 68.9 MHz (scaled from 0.0 MHz), 49.0 kHz, 6
    0.0 Hz
    (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1280x768_60" 68.93 1280 1296 1320 1408 768 771 777
    816
I don't understand why the driver changes the modeline parameters. Any ideas?
On a related issue - anyone got the 8.2x fglrx drivers working with the latest kernel and X? Everything was fine with my setup before I upgraded to 2.6.20 and 7.2.0.
    Elad

What's changed?  If the monitor works fine (without bad resolution or the streaks characteristic of ugly refresh rates), I'd leave it alone.  The driver probably has its own ideas about modes.  Of course, that's just me.
This stuff might concern you, from the radeon man page.
    Option "DDCMode" "boolean"
Force to use the modes queried from the connected monitor.
    The default is off.
    Option "MonitorLayout" "string"
This option is used to overwrite the detected monitor types. This is only required when driver makes a false detection. The possible monitor types are:
    NONE -- Not connected
    CRT -- Analog CRT monitor
    TMDS -- Desktop flat panel
    LVDS -- Lapto flat panel
This option can be used in following format:
Option "MonitorLayout" "[type on primary], [type on secondary]"
For example, Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT, TMDS"
    Primary/Secondary head for dual-head cards:
(when only one port is used, it will be treated as the primary regardless)
    Primary head:
    DVI port on DVI+VGA cards
    LCD output on laptops
Internal TMDS prot on DVI+DVI cards
    Secondary head:
    VGA port on DVI+VGA cards
    VGA port on laptops
External TMDS port on DVI+DVI cards
    The default value is undefined.

Ok, seems like you don't use [testing] because in this case x wouldn't even start, because RgbPath in the Section "Files" doesn't exist anymore and has to be removed.
I do always recommend people to disable any kind of options in the Section "Device", if there are problems with the video card. You usually do not have to put radeon neigher into the Section "Module", nor into rc.conf! So remove them, radeon should be loaded because it's set as Driver in the Section "Device"
Your problem with wrong resolution ... I'm not an expert in this, didn't ever have such a problem, but are you sure, that your HorizSync and VertRefresh values are right?

  • [Solved] AMD open source - anything comparable to CCC "Desktop Color"?

With AMD's proprietary drivers we get access to CCC which, among its other utilities, gives the user the ability to manually set RGB color values (gamma, brightness, contrast) for RGB channels for attached monitors.
I have three monitors whose color profiles I'm trying to match (Qnix Qx2710 monitors, no hardware based way to manipulate RGB). I know that using CCC is not the recommended solution - I have a colorimeter, and am still trying to generate ICC profiles that get the monitors to match one another. So far, this has not been fruitful.
In the past, on my Windows partition, I have used CCC to make adjustments so that my 3 monitors are close enough to each other for my needs - I'm not doing any type of photography or design work, I just can't stand having the same page(s) / windows look so drastically different across each monitor (it's particularly bad on white backgrounds).
I do not want to using AMD's drivers on my Arch install though. Is there any way to manipulate RGB channel values through the open source drivers (or some other means besides setting ICC profiles)? My searching so far hasn't turned up anything useful besides using ICC profiles.

  • Ati open source driver not working.

I have an ATI 4650 mobility radeon, and the open radeonhd driver and the catalyst driver work.  However, I would like to use the open radeon driver instead, yet when I install the driver and use Xorg -configure it just uses the vesa driver.  I tried configuring xorg.conf and it errors our with "No screens found."  I've been told by a few people that my card is supported by the open radeon driver, so I am at a loss as to why it doesn't work, unless it isn't really supported.

Does it sound like the kernel build error for the keyboard is related to the announcement about modular keyboard support?
If so, I have not been able to further connect the dots on my own to track down the cause, which is why I'm looking for others' insights now.

To be sure, I ran the command from the announcement:
    $ dmesg -t | grep '^i8042'
    i8042: PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP0303:KBD,PNP0f13:MOU] at 0x60,0x64 irq 1,12
From my understanding, that means I don't have to take action regarding that announcement. Thanks for the comment.
Your understanding is correct, but that also shows that many systems without a visible ps/2 port still have the controller for it !

  • [SOLVED]-ish boot/device/radeon issues after recent upgrade

Hi, I am having major issues after last update. Basically it seems it is no longer loading drivers correctly at boot. I have a radeon graphics card, and the screen resolution normally switches during the boot process (presumably when the radeon module loads). This is no longer happening, so X is not starting for me. The network card is also not being picked up.
When i look at the boot log there is no errors i can find, but also there is NO [drm] messages at all (there is normally a fair few as it sorts out the graphics card.
I am still investigating, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful (should i be looking at mkinitcpio? or the kernel itself? or the ati-dri ? what exactly were the changes made to the packages in the last couple of days on this sort of thing?

Hi i have sorted it. Unfortunately i am not sure exactly *how* i sorted it, I did another pacman -Suy which installed linux-utils (which i cant see affecting much). Unfortunately i had switched to a custom kernel when i first got the issue with the arch one, when i switched back again suddently everthing started working.
I understand the /usr/lib changes look like they have screwed np my custom kernels modules folder. But i still dont know why i got the problem in the first place, as it was with the arch standard kernel and ram disk if first got the issue. Anyway gone now. and the network card is working too.

  • [solved] Wifi and Video /Audio issues with Yosemite upgrade

Apple support recommend you call them to solve your issue as they want to report all instances to engineering. They solved my issue (for now)
    Symptoms on Macbook Pro Retina 16GB 512GB SSD - late 2013 :
    1. any online audio or video stutters when playing - Youtube, Vimeo etc
    2. wifi cuts out - only reconnects if I turned off/on wifi
    3. Bluetooth keyboard / magic mouse disconnects
Allegedly, during the update, something can happen with users accounts freezing. Therefore, a simple fix solves the issues:
    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Start Mac holding down SHIFT key (until desktop appears) - log in with your problem user account (Safe mode for those not familiar)
    3. Open Safari and navigate to Youtube - I played a video - the sound was not available but does not matter.
    4. Shut down Mac
    5. Start Mac in normal mode
All should be fine now. If not call Apple support - that's what they suggest

  • Serious graphical issues after processor upgrade.

I have a AGP 400 Mhz G4 Gigabit with 640 MB Ram running Tiger X.4.3. I just popped in a 500 Mhz AGP processor and everything "seemed" to be functioning normally for a bit. No Kernel Panics and the system reports back a 500 Mhz processor speed.
Then I first noticed a problem in the interface for Toast 7.02 with vertical lines evenly spaced. I had to reboot to get rid of them, but they came back.
Certain desktop pictures, some icons, and some JPGs picked these lines up too. They are evenly spaced and scale along with the image size. They show up in some online images in my browser and they can be turned on/off in certain images by clicking the little "show image with/without ICC" button in GraphicConvertor. The widgets also have dithering and diagonal lines.
I don't know what "they" are but it's ugly and it seems to coincide with my upgrade.
    Here's a screenshot.
    http://www.2and2.net/Priv/Picture1.png
I checked my monitor settings and all is normal there. Running 1600 x 1200 at 85 hertz for over a year on a 21" CRT. Changing monitor resolutions merely scales the lines accordingly. Changing number of colors has no effect.
I've zapped the pram. I've run all the hardware tests in TechTool Pro (all passed). I also ran some unix maintenance stuff (repaired permissions, updated prebindings, and cleared the cache files) and nothing helps.
I don't want to pull out the new processor!! Was there something else I should have done when I put in the upgrade?
    Please help.

    I don't know what I'm looking for.
Immediately after installing this software, I went to the control panel and there were some values in there greater than 100% already. I don't know, and the documention is somewhat ambiguous, if that's the reading from the card or the desired reading the software is/will apply. I wish I wrote those down because I then hit the "stock frequencies" button which put the two values to 0.00%
So here's what I see now-
    Processor: 118.00 Mhz
    0.00%
    Memory: 140.00 Mhz
    0.00%
So also the documentation say the following...
"The Stock Frequencies button reverts to factory settings (more precisely, settings stored in ROM, so if the card was already overclocked using Graphiccelerator, these are the frequencies which will be set)"
What does that mean? Factory settings? (unless?) somebody already overclocked it, the "stock" button reverts back to those previously overclocked settings?? If so, how could I know?
    From System Profiler-
    ATY,Rage128Pro:
    Chipset Model: ATY,Rage128Pro
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-A
    VRAM (Total): 16 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x5046
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-72701-125
Either way, I still see the problem and I'm not even using the faster processor! I see the problem in only a few system icons in the dock. Finder icon, Dashboard icon, Apple support icon, and trash icon. Trash icon fixed itself for now. I'm not sure if they're left over from before and just need to be reset or what? Force quitting the dock just brings back the same.
I think I have some hardware issue that is aggravated by this version of Tiger or a faster processor.
I really need to figure out how to get my version of Apple Hardware Test so I can know for sure.
