[SOLVED] Audio Compression Quality

I would be interested in views about which compression algorithm (MP3, OGG, AAC, etc) gives the best reproduction quality for a given bitrate (e.g 160kB/s).
Thanks in advance.

That one is easy: ogg vorbis is the best audio codec. Some might say opus is better. Well yes it is, but just kinda better. Why do I still prefer and recommend vorbis? Because opus only supports 48kHz. This results in an upsampling of most audio material, which usually comes in 44.1kHz. For lower bitrates (I'd say \leq 128kbps) opus of course beats vorbis, but with 160kbps (or -q 5 in oggenc) I'd say vorbis is the best for music.

    Hi Strung,
I see that you are having some issues with compression and Beats Audio. I have done some research into your issue and will be happy to help. Here are a couple of links to HP Support Forum threads where they talk about the settings in the Beats Audio.

  • Audio compression issues in iBooks Author

Hi - I am having quality issues with audio compression. I have a voice only file. It is fine in the original recording. I have saved to aiff and m4a and dropped both into iBooks widget. The widget "optimizes" it and the resulting sound is full of echo and sounds like repeats of first and last consonants of words. I even thought that my stereo channels might be out of sync, so mixed down to mono. Same sound problems in iBooks.

Found the root of the problem and a fix
    1. Your audio file is at 48hz
    2. Convert to 44.1 hz in Logic or any other Digital Audio Workstations
    3. Export to a labeled folder with settings  AIFF or Wave 16bit
    4. From the folder drag and drop audio files in iBooks Author
IBook Author auto 'opitimizing' can handle that with no glitches or dropouts

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Change Image Compression/Quality w/ Javascript?

    Hello,
I've got a folder-level script that will merge PDFs by using "insertPages" to add a list of PDFs to a new document. The file size is too large, and I've noticed that if I go into the PDF Optimizer manually and change the Image Settings so the compression quality is "low" for both Color images adn Grayscale images, it brings the file size down to where I need it to be.
My question is, can I do this in my script somehow? I don't see anything in the Javascript Reference or Acrobat SDK about updating images within document. I'd really like to automate this optimization within my script.
Has anyone ever done this before?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Thanks again for your reply!
Well the output folder could change... and really, it would be most ideal to not even save the single PDFs (although it looks like I might have to). All I need to accomplish is to take a folder of PDFs and merge them into one PDF (but it must be optimized and cropped). I don't need the new, saved versions of the single PDFs. I feel like my "automation" solution to this will end up being more tedious than manually clicking "combine" and merging PDFs that way, and applying the crop settings afterward. Maybe I am making this more difficult than it needs to be? Here is what I'm doing:
    1. I have a folder level script that executes when Acrobat loads whichs adds two menu items. The first opens up the Batch Sequences menu so the user doesn't have to find them.
    2. From here, the user will need to run a batch sequence that will optimize and crop each PDF and save them to an output folder.
    3. Now the user will need to run another batch sequence (and choose the output folder from step 2 as the input folder now) that will collect all the file paths of the optimized PDFs.
    4. Now the user can use my other menu item from step 1 that will execute a folder level script and merge the PDFs by inserting them into a new document.
    5. I can prompt the user here to save the new document somewhere.
It seems like there should be an easier way to do this. Is it not possible to merge the PDFs in a batch sequence and then use the output folder to save the one new PDF (rather than each of the input PDFs)?

  • Transparency flattening compression quality

    Hi,
In Acrobat 9, an important option was missing for transparency flattening: the compression quality setting. I found that it is now available in Acrobat XI. When I saw that, I thought that my problems with flattening were a thing of the past. Well... no. I use preflight droplets to process the PDF files and the compression quality is not present in the prefilght options. Why is the quality setting available in the Transparency Flattening dialog box and not in the prefilght profile? And, if not present, why did Acrobat choose to use the "Fast processing" quality instead of "Best quality" for transparency flattening done with preflight?
    Thanks!

First off, a SD (DVDs are SD) image will never look as good as a High Def Image but you probably know that.
It appears you have made a copy of the Apple preset for DVD compression, that's what we want.
Open up the MPEG-2 Setting and click to the third menu (Frame Controls), click the sprocket button to allow Frame Controls to be ON, Resize Filter should be Better and Adaptive Details should be checked, move the Anti-Alias slider to 35 and try compressing again.
You can play with these sliders to reduce aliasing (stair-stepping) and/or increase detail (enhance edges)

  • How to read compression quality ?

    Hi,
On ImageWriteParam, there is a getCompressionQuality().
I should want to read this property on an existing image file, but there is no getCompressionQuality on a ImageReadParam.
How is it possible to read this compression quality from an image file ?
    Thanks.

I think you're misinterpreting something. The compression quality only* comes into play when writing out an image. Once the image data has been compressed then that's it. You now have the image data and thats all. You can't tell whether this data came from compressing an image 1% or 99%. It's not like a zip archive. The only exception I can think of is if the format decides to save this information in the image's metafile (but I doubt it).

  • JPEG Compression quality in Carbon

I'm writing a Carbon/Quartz application and we are saving JPEG files. However, I can't figure out how to set the compression quality. I'm using kCGImagePropertyJFIFDictionary but it doesn't seem to have an entry for compression. Is there another dictionary I should be using instead?
    thanks

To answer my own question, taken from stackoverflow.com, the answer is kCGImageDestinationLossyCompressionQuality in the image dictionary, NOT the JFIF dictionary.
It looks like it's supposed to work for other formats, but it doesn't seem to work for TIFF for me, because TIFF only wants to save as LZW which is lossless...

  • Optimize JPG image size reduction by reduced compression quality vs. reduced pixels?

I have many images of slides scanned at high res (4800 DPI, maximum pixels 5214x3592).   Although I will be saving these as lossless TIFs, I also wish to make JPGs from them that I wish to be just less than 5 MB in file size.  Aside from cropping, I know I can achieve such a reduction of JPG file size by a combination of saving to lower quality JPG compression or reducing image size.  My question is, what is theoretically or practically better, achieving this mostly by reducing image total pixels or by reducing  JPG compression quality.  Thank you

Thank you Doug.  The comments on extensive uniform blue sky vs. marked variation in color seem well taken, I'll keep this method of choosing in mind.  My goal is to create a JPG family photo archive of the highest quality images that I can make for future use by non-technical descendants (thus it will supplement the TIF archive that holds the best quality versions of the same images but that may not be usable to novices).  As I cannot anticipate exactly how the JPGs will be used, I just want them to be the best possible, while still being of a size that can be uploaded to, say, Costco (5 MB size limit) for making enlargements.
In general, I am often left curious as to how exactly Photoshop carries out its algorithms and how different factors influence the outcome.  So often, one read "just try different techniques and see what looks the best".  But I am always left wondering, what is the theory behind this and has it been systematically studied and worked out and published.  In so many disciplines, such as medicine, the methods of optimization has been evaluated, systematized, and fully described.  I have not yet explored what may be found in technical journals, but I'm sure much of this good stuff must be available somewhere. It would be nice to have a "How Things Work" that actually explains what Photoshop is doing under the hood.
    Thanks again.

  • Multi-clip Audio Compression

Is there a way to apply audio compression to multiple clips simultaneously? I had some audio difficulties and was using the camera's compression in early shots and not in later ones, so the balance, levels, and dynamic range are significantly different. The uncompressed sound has much wider dynamic range and clips in a few spots, so I can just pull the levels up.

Select a bunch of clips in the timeline.
    Use Modify>Levels.
You use Absolute or Relative to make adjustments.
Relative may be what you are looking for.

  • Audio compression rate

    Hi,
is there a way to change the audio compression rate on my Ipod? Bass and treble sound very distorted when connected to my home stereo amplifier.
    Many thanks
    acer aspire 3500   Windows XP

Distortion can be caused by several things -
    1) Simply overloading the input to your hi-fi or by a high data compression rate or a combination of the two. Check the input sensitivity rating of the socket you are using for the iPod on your hi-fi is around the 1 volt level (RMS). If is much less than 1V (say 300mV or less), even a lowish volume setting on the iPod could cause distortion, at least in the bass. Input overload from high bass levels can cause clipping distortion that can blow speaker tweeters (not the woofers) and sound terrible. Also, file compression at less than 128kbps causes progressively more disagreeable distortion right across the audio bandwidth.
    2) Downloaded files are sometimes highly compressed (less than 68kbps) and are not worth playing from any half-decent hi-fi. Also, avoid ripping CD's at less than 128kbps if you want to play back through your hi-fi. Preferably, use a bigger bit rate than 128kbps. iTunes material should be fine, at least for the non-audiophile, as it's AAC files are not too highly compressed.
    3) If you use the Sound Enhancer (iTunes preferences) or an iPod Equalizer Preset, you could push the overall output toward overload for the hi-fi input.
    Happy listening.

  • Best audio compression

Hi, trying to make a DVD of a music work, but I get a slight hiss when it is transcoded, I've noticed the audio bitrate, thing 192, but there are higher settings, up to 400... if I set the bitrate higher,w ill the audio compress better..thanks, I'm a bit clueless aobut all this...

The DVD Specifications state that Stereo Dolby Digital must be at least 192kbps. You can go up to 448kbps, and expect the disc to play on all players. Going any higher than this will make the disc out of spec if this is the sole stream available.
LPCM is uncompressed. This carries a data rate of 1536kbps, as no data is thrown away by the perceptual process. The downside is that you lose bitrate available for film, but if this is a music title, LPCM is your best bet.
Simply export from Premiere as Uncompressed 16 bit 48KHz.
You may - if you wish - elect to go with 24 bit 48KHz, at a data rate of 2336kbps or similar.

  • Audio input quality when skyping with Nokia BH200 BT headset

I use a Nokia BH200 headset with my iMac to skype and people have complained that they find it difficult to hear me clearly and it also sounds very soft. I have tried charging the headset fully and of course set the Skype preferences to the bT headset. Any other people have this problem?
I should also say that I have a MBP with Skype installed and running as well at the same time but I usually take calls on my iMac. I have this configuration so that I can pick up/make calls on my MBP when I am in the living room as opposed to my study where my iMac is. I am not sure if that has affected the audio in quality.

I can confirm this workaround is possible, I managed to do it the first try:

It is downright ugly and crazy, especially considering the price of these devices.
