Multi-clip Audio Compression

Is there a way to apply audio compression to multiple clips simultaneously? I had some audio difficulties and was using the camera's compression in early shots and not in later ones, so the balance, levels, and dynamic range are significantly different. The uncompressed sound has much wider dynamic range and clips in a few spots, so I can just pull the levels up.

Select a bunch of clips in the timeline.
Use Modify>Levels.
You use Absolute or Relative to make adjustments.
Relative may be what you are looking for.

  • Multi-clip audio editing?

    Hi all,
I'm sure this is  a very easy fix, but I can't figure out anything from the manual. I shoot a lot of school sports and now that I'm doing basketball indoors, the audio is generally too hot. Because I stop and start recording during time-outs or other extended periods of "no play", I get a lot of clips. When I import them, I need to tame down the volume, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to reduce the volume on all equally at the same time. So far, I've done the first clip, then selected all of the others and pasted special attributes to them. Is this really the most efficient way to go about this. It doesnt' seem very elegant, but I am a loss for a better solution.
    Any thoughts?
    cheers,
    Jack

You can also select multiple clips and use the Audio pane in the Inspector to lower the volume on all of them at once:

  • Audio Switching in Multi Clips

I'm using FCP 6.0.3 and have assembled 2 multi clips. Each multi clip as video from 2 cameras. In the second multi clip, by selecting Audio-->All in the Viewer window and selecting my timeline window, I can set edit points that allow me to change which camera's audio feed is being used. However, in the first Multi clip, I only appear to have the ability to use only a single audio for the entire clip. It "beeps" at me whenever I attempt to set new edit points for Audio.
Is there any kind of feature I may have inadvertently enabled (i.e. via a keyboard short cut) that would prevent me from setting audio edit points to switch between the audio of the 2 cameras.
NOTE - I do not want to switch the audio stream every time the I set a video edit point. Rather I am looking to use the audio mainly from 1 camera but selectively use the other camera's audio when someone was talking near the mic of the first camera.

I'd think you could make a 2 pass sort of multiclip edit that would work for you. Select the video only to be edited, then go through another pass of the material and select the audio to be edited only. It's done from the pop up menu in the Viewer. • AAC and multi-channel audio

Can AAC be used to encode multi-channel audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio?
DTS-HD Master Audio is an optional audio format in Blu-Ray. It uses lossless compression.
There are other audio formats from Dolby Digital, for example, that are used to encode HD audio in Blu-Ray. Can AAC be used to encode those as well, without any loss of information?
Is there any work in progress to make HD audio such as DTS-HD Master Audio available discretely on disc, like what the older DVD-Audio format made possible for 5.1 channel surround sound on disc?
    Thanks.

What adjustments do you want to make?

  • Audio compression rate

    Hi,
is there a way to change the audio compression rate on my Ipod? Bass and treble sound very distorted when connected to my home stereo amplifier.
    Many thanks
    acer aspire 3500   Windows XP

Distortion can be caused by several things -
    1) Simply overloading the input to your hi-fi or by a high data compression rate or a combination of the two. Check the input sensitivity rating of the socket you are using for the iPod on your hi-fi is around the 1 volt level (RMS). If is much less than 1V (say 300mV or less), even a lowish volume setting on the iPod could cause distortion, at least in the bass. Input overload from high bass levels can cause clipping distortion that can blow speaker tweeters (not the woofers) and sound terrible. Also, file compression at less than 128kbps causes progressively more disagreeable distortion right across the audio bandwidth.
    2) Downloaded files are sometimes highly compressed (less than 68kbps) and are not worth playing from any half-decent hi-fi. Also, avoid ripping CD's at less than 128kbps if you want to play back through your hi-fi. Preferably, use a bigger bit rate than 128kbps. iTunes material should be fine, at least for the non-audiophile, as it's AAC files are not too highly compressed.
    3) If you use the Sound Enhancer (iTunes preferences) or an iPod Equalizer Preset, you could push the overall output toward overload for the hi-fi input.
    Happy listening.

  • Multi-clip editing not working

    Hello everyone,
I need help with the multi-cam editing feature, I have done everything I know to be correct to setup my multi-cam editing.
    1. setting a common in point with my 3 cameras
    2. selecting each and creating my multi-clip
    3. setting my RT settings for multi-clip editing
    4. making sure open is set
The blue marks show up as I switch from angle to angle( I'm using the number pad as my switcher). The problem comes in when i stop and press the spacebar. The blue markers disappear and the cuts don't show up. Please help me understand what I could be doing wrong.

Thank you all for answering my question. Yet I have done all these things you both mentioned. Its as if there is a glitch. Prior to this post I found that I was switching and not cutting my selections, the adjustment was made and finally I thought I could edit in peace. When I hit the space bar after my cuts (no longer just selection) do not conform to my multi-cam timeline. I mean is there an order I should be doing things in to have this work. The crazy part is that it works sometimes and other times it just doesn't want to function correctly.
    steps taken:
    1. Setting a common in point with my 3 cameras
    2. Selecting each and creating my multi-clip
    3. Setting my RT multi-clip settings for multi-clip editing on timeline
    4. Loading my keyboard layout (which Cut video to angle etc.)
    5. Making sure Gang is set to Open
    6. Double click on multi clip in sequence to load onto viewer
    7. Setting my audio to center and other two to video only
-play the sequence, start switching and hope/ pray my cuts conform to the Seq.
I'm I doing something out of order here ?
    thanks in advance
    -Jay

  • HT5105 in multi-clip mode it won't change camera angeles, just goes doink.

in multi-clip mode it won't change camera angeles, just goes doink. Even if I click directly on the clip itself. My switch is open and it all was working fine until I needed to use an audio clip from camera 2 instead of 1. It also seemed to have trouble doing that.

  • Multicam editing with multi-track audio?

Does anyone know how to do multicam editing with multi-track audio?  Apparently, the multicam editor can only see Audio Track #1 in the Source Sequence.  I tried mixing my original audio tracks #1, #2, and #3 (submixes) to the master audio track in the Source Sequence and if I listen to the new Multicam Sequence (the nested Source Sequence) all 3 original audio tracks are there (combined), but when I go to do the multicam edit in the multicam monitor window, I"m back to just Audio Track #1 of the Source Sequence and audio tracks #2 and #3 are missing ???  Thanks for your help!

I have run the gambit of different techniques. The one that is most efficient is listed in Colin Brougham's response number 9
There's a far easier way to do this: after you sync your angles, hold down Alt/Opt and select or lasso just the video portions of the clips, and nest those. The audio stays put, but the video moves into the nest, and you can then enable Multicam on the nested sequence.
One of the best things about this is that it circumvents Premiere Pro's totally BS "Render Required Files" nonsense.
I must admit the ALT lasso tip was one of the best features I have seen. Like a revelation when I discovered it some months ago while watching a tutorial about something not related. As far as the "Rendering required files" That was kicking my but for a while doing multicam editing. If you do edit both audio and video in multicam you might find the "Rendering required files" issue. Basically the problem stems from having a lot of cuts to process at the same time both audio and video. 1080P is a huge amount of data when you multiply it by four cameras plus multiple audio cuts and effects ,(audio gain, Deessing etc.) So Pre-rendering the audio by clicking in the main sync timeline and then at the top Click Sequence/Render Audio. This takes care of the issue when you are cutting multiple tracks at once. It is a good practice to work from a main sync sequence and then copy that to a new sequence  preserving the main sequence as unchanged. I found the solution is to "render audio" only in the master sync sequence this will then pass through to all subsequent copies that are made "downstream" allowing you to easily clean up anything. If you make a mistake you can always start from the main sync sequence and not lose too much time. Takes a little bit of time to render but once that is done you can cut all tracks video and audio like butter. I have been doing a lot of 1080p multicam editing over this past year and had quite learning curve. Most of the work I do is multicam editing by choice it is much faster for me to edit this way because I am used to working in live events where we need to look at all shots at the same time make a "best choice" and keep rolling. Have fun with it!

  • Premiere pro multicam clip audio

Having a real problem with audio in multi clips. It keeps sourcing audio in track one even though I have two tracks in the multi clip. What is the best way to control the audio source in a multi clip after it is created?

You can always do things the original (and often better) way.
    Manually.

  • Unwanted audio compression

    Can anyone help?!!
I'm trying to output a movie to tape but it keeps compressing the audio. Louder passages keep being knocked down. I don't understand why as I have not added an audio compression filter. It's not compressed when I play it in the timeline. Any ideas anyone??
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    and a teensy bit more:
Your problem could have just as much to do with the "soundsticks". I just looked them up. They are small speakers intended to be used as computer speakers. They in no way represent or emulate a studio monitor that one might use to make audio decisions. Even if they sound great... in fact especially if they sound great. If they make "improvements" on your sound, then those are improvements your listeners aren't going to hear.
This should pretty much make the case: "SoundSticks II employs a new computer-optimized multi-band parametric equalization."
So the problems you're having could be originating with the prejudices of those epeakers affecting your audio processing decisions, which in turn affect what comes out the other end.
To have it come out sounding like "compression" is a little odd, but it may just have to do with your relative perception of the sound coming from these different speakers.
The best way to judge audio is in a clean soft neutral environment, with good nearfield monitors. In addition (and not simultaneously) you should be able to hear some representation of how your mix is going to sound on a little 3" speaker in an average TV set. One way to do that is to play it through your TV set.

  • Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?

Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
I went through all my old formats (VHS, hi8, miniDV, etc) and captured them. They end up as .mov files. Some of the longer 2hr ones are about 28GB.
If I am making a new project and I want to edit in short clips from several of these longer files, is there a way to save a short clip from an existing file without compressing it any further?
In other words, lets say I have 10 2hr files, but I know I only want 1 minute from each. Is there a way to select the good 1 minute from each .mov file that I want to use and a version of this 1 minute from each in the folder I am working on the project in, without compressing them??? I like to keep all of the content I am working with on a project in its own folder in case the project needs to be moved from one hard drive to the next while I am working on it. I would hate to have to make a folder that is 280GB or more when I only need a minute from each larger file.
I hope I have asked this in a way that is understandable. Maybe there is a term for what I want to do, that I don't know yet that has its own help section too.   Thanks for any assistance

Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there  a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

  • Multi-clip almost never works for me on the first attempt

Anybody know why when setting up a multi-clip, I can almost
never get it to work the first time I hit the timeline to start playing.
All my settings are correct, but either the viewer or timeline doesn't move on the first time try.
All I do is take my playhead back to the beginning of
timeline, hit play again, and usually it then starts working correctly. Sometimes I have better results if I hit the play in the Viewer instead of the Timeline, but it's not a consistent thing.
Again, I'm in open sync in Viewer and Canvas/Timeline, I'm in Unlimited RT, dynamic video quality and frame rate, multiclip activated there, turned off high quality scrubbing, ect.
I'm usually doing this with (3) short 3 minutes DV clips
    on a mac book pro.
When I do get it going after the second, third or fourth attempt, I haven't changed any of the settings,...I've just confirmed that they were right to begin with.
Anybody else experience this and any ideas on how to get it to work correctly first time out?
    Thanks.

so effectively it's on a different drive, sort of
But still using the same reader heads as your primary drive. So technically, it's still the same drive.
I just cut a 4 angle music video last week using my MacPro at work, and even with the source media on a FW800 G-Raid, I was still getting delayed playback and couldn't even view the 4-up display when playing back. So I moved the project to our XSAN, and with the fibre backbone there, bandwidth was definitely increased.
So the other variable in this problem is bandwidth as well as RAM. I know that a fibre based storage system isn't in everyone's budget, but I'd recommend trying out an eSATA based drive, given that I had trouble with 4 streams over FW800.

  • Will Soundtrack Pro allow me to master multi-track audio CD?

Please help! I have been looking for the past 4 days for a multi-track audio editing software that will allow me to burn multiple tracks to a CD. Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a 45 minute message and I want to fade a song in at the beginning, and another song fading out at the end. Then I want to place markers every 10 minutes, split into separate tracks, and burn the whole thing to CD from within that software (possibly I can fudge on this last one by exporting each individual track to iTunes, then making a playlist, but if Soundtrack Pro or some other program can do it all, then that is what I prefer!)
I tried Audacity, and it was close to what I wanted, but when I exported into iTunes the last 20 seconds of every song dropped audio! I have also tried the following and these are the errors/difficulties I encountered:
    • Amadeus II : No multi-track mixing capability
    • Cacophony: kept crashing, multiple error messages
    • Jasmine: unique tape-style interface, but again, no multi-track export
    • Sound Studio 3: good interface, easy marking, but no sound after export
    • Snd Sampler: only one sound can be open at a time
    • Deck LE: wouldn't even open one of my audio files!
So now my attention is on Soundtrack Pro and Logic Pro. Both of these seem like they will have what I need, but I'm going to have to fork over a pretty penny. Which is better and will either do multi-track mixing to CD?
Thank you so much to anyone who will read through my whole ordeal and help me out with their musical expertise and sound audio advice!
    Sincerely,
    Paul

    Hello,
I thank you both for the help you've given, and I have obtained STP and really enjoy using it, but I am still disappointed that it will not allow me to master multiple tracks. For instance in Audacity, there is the export multiple command that splits one long song up according to the markers that you placed and then exports them as several different files. In STP, this same process is amazingly difficult, you have to take the razor tool, cut each section, drag it down to another track, then put a stop song marker after the cut section, then select each track and "export selected". (Do you know of an easier way?) Now for a $1200 dollar program that is just a little bit ridiculous, why cannot Apple just have a command to export by markers? Where can I go to request this feature be implemented?
Here's an example of what I am looking for, with features such as Redbook CD mastering (but this software is too buggy)

  • Line Up Clips for a Multi-clip Edit

Hi I am editing a dance video, when it was recorded at the event a few of the camera people decided to pause after every song - this has made it a hassle to edit. I am trying to line up the clips to get them all in sync for a multi-clip. The only way I could think of to do this was give each camera angle a track and line them up that. I almost have them all lined up, but I have no idea how to make it back into one clip, since it is currently cut into tons of pieces. How do I combine them back into one clip? The closest I could find was Nesting, but that creates a sequence, and I can't make a Multi-clip out of sequences.
Each video track is a different angle, the screenshot I posted doesn't show all of the clips lined up, because I didn't get quite that far. How can I make this into a multi-clip
I just started using Final Cut about a week ago and I don't really know how it all works....yet.
    Any help would be appreciated.
