[SOLVED] Autostart startx after login

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with autostarting startx after I log in.
So far the machine boots, terminal login dialog appears, I log in, get my terminal and start X manually via "startx".
But I want my system to start X automatically after logging in. Without me typing in the command.
So I did some research (both internet and the Arch forums) and couldn't come up with a working solution to that problem.
More or less every thread links to the Start X at Login page.
And I did add the lines in question to my .bash_profile (after I made a skeleton copy of it, as described).
But still nothing happens after logging in (I waited for about half a minute). So it doesn't work for, or I am doing something wrong.
Here my .bash_profile:
# ~/.bash_profile
[[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc
[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx
I have no idea how to proceed.
Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?

Nothing happens?  Do you mean you are just at a command prompt, no errors, nothing?  And you are not logged out?  Even with a faulty or empty xinitrc, this would still end your current login session.
So it seems the conditionals don't pass.  This means either that X is already running, or you do not have an active login session.  Are you booting with an alternative init system?  If you get to a command prompt enter the following commands and report their results:
pgrep Xorg
echo $0
echo $XDG_VTNR
loginctl
uname -a

  • [SOLVED]Run startx after login?

    I have a laptop with multiple users.
    Is it possible to have a different setup for each user, stored in their /home/ folder? So, when I log in, all I see is the terminal, but when another user, say a guest user, logs in, LXDE starts up.
    Right now, I put this in my .xinitrc file (startlxde in guest, xmonad in my own), but is it possible to set start different programs for different users after login? I would prefer start x on my own from my own user, but my brother who frequently use my laptop don't want to type startx each time he logs in.

    Assuming you set up the right .xinitrc in each users ~/ this (from the wiki) will startx automatically for each user you decide to bless with the additions to their .bash_profile
    .bash_profile wrote:if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]] && [[ $(tty) = /dev/tty1 ]]; then

  • [SOLVED] Execute script after login

    Hi,
    I want to execute a script after I logged in, but it fails. There is no problem, when I do this manually.
    My ~/.xsession:
    #!/bin/sh
    ~/bin/select-monitor.sh
    I tried to paste this in .xinitrc, also, but it fails, too.
    What can I do?
    EDIT: Okay, this has solved my problem:

    /etc/pam.d/common-auth exists only to be included in other, service-specific PAM files, so one can easily change auth mechanisms for all/majority services at once. You don't have it, so probably you have fully separate PAM files, without common include; so you should just apply those common-auth advices to all services you are going to modify. As always with PAM -- BE CAUTIOUS. Especially if your machine sits a few hundred km away

  • [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

    Hi guys,
    So I'm a little perplexed. One day my system just started quitting xorg. I had it to startx upon login, but that would just flash my monitors black and then return my to a login prompt. So I went in and tried to analyse the log file but I didn't have much luck. I'm going to post it here and hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

    [ 569.688] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
    I have my system fully up to date, I really have no idea why one day it would just stop working.
    I saw that at line 568.521 there was a failure of ACPI but I really am not sure how that would affect my system.
    Only thing I can think of in conjunction with this issue, is that I setup my foldingathome client to be enabled in systemctl. It started making weird graph glitches in my tty so I disabled it. Not sure if they are linked or not.
    Thanks!

    I uninstalled nvidia-304xx and installed nvidia with needed dependencies. This is the output I get from running 'startx'. It does the exact same thing, looks like it's going to load screen flickers and then kicks me back saying it was terminated successfully.

  • [SOLVED] Autostarted programs not exiting on logout with openbox

    Hi,
    I'm pretty sure I'm just overlooking something obvious, but I simply can't find a solution to the following basic problem. I'm using a simple openbox session started from xdm (also tried lightdm with the same results). In case of xdm, I'm using a .xsession file to start openbox like this:
    exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session openbox-session
    In case of lightdm, it also works without a .xsession or .xinitrc file.
    I'm using "~/.config/openbox/autostart" to start some tools upon login. Until now, I have only started programs which exit right away which worked fine. But now I'd like to use autostart to start a (non-X11) program which should continue to run until I log out. For testing this, I used a simple infinite loop script, let's call it "loop.sh". When I start loop.sh in autostart using "loop.sh &", this script continues to run even if I log out of openbox using the openbox menu. In fact, if I log out and log in multiple times, multiple instances will keep running forever. When I start loop.sh simply using "loop.sh", also the parent processes, namely "/bin/sh /usr/lib/openbox/openbox-autostart OPENBOX" and "sh /home/ochi/.config/openbox/autostart" continue to run.
    What is the correct way to have all processes spawned during the X session killed upon logout?
    For reference, this is the loop script I use:
    #!/bin/bash
    while true; do
    # If you like, you can also play a sound for feedback.
    #paplay /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/complete.oga &
    sleep 1
    done
    Update: Using gdm seems to "fix" the problem, i.e. all programs started by the autostart script seem to get killed correctly. However, gdm pulls a LOT of dependencies I don't want to have. I wonder what gdm does differently...

    I continued to study this subject, and here is what I found at this time.
    First I precise again that I use openbox launched by startx at login in tty.
    When I exit openbox, I return to a -bash prompt, and I then can log out of tty.
    After logging in into openbox, I have:
    └─user.slice
    └─user-1000.slice
    ├─[email protected]
    │ ├─1421 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user
    │ └─1422 (sd-pam)
    └─session-c1.scope
    ├─1414 login -- berbae
    ├─1425 -bash
    ├─1432 /bin/sh /usr/bin/startx
    ├─1454 xinit /home/berbae/.xinitrc -- /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc :0 vt1 -auth /tmp/serverauth.xxxxxxxxxx
    ├─1455 /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg -nolisten tcp :0 vt1 -auth /tmp/serverauth.xxxxxxxxxx
    ├─1459 /usr/bin/openbox --startup /usr/lib/openbox/openbox-autostart OPENBOX
    ├─1464 dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session
    ├─1465 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
    etc...
    When I exit openbox, without logging out, I have:
    └─user.slice
    └─user-1000.slice
    ├─[email protected]
    │ ├─1421 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user
    │ └─1422 (sd-pam)
    └─session-c1.scope
    ├─1414 login -- berbae
    └─1425 -bash
    If I ran something in background from konsole, when in openbox, this is not killed:
    └─user.slice
    └─user-1000.slice
    ├─[email protected]
    │ ├─1421 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user
    │ └─1422 (sd-pam)
    └─session-c1.scope
    ├─1414 login -- berbae
    ├─1425 -bash
    ├─1296 /bin/bash /home/berbae/bin/loop.sh
    └─1338 sleep 60
    If I log out, the process is still not killed!
    └─user.slice
    ├─user-1000.slice
    │ ├─[email protected]
    │ │ ├─517 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --user
    │ │ └─519 (sd-pam)
    │ └─session-c1.scope
    │ ├─1296 /bin/bash /home/berbae/bin/loop.sh
    │ └─1338 sleep 60
    As seen the '[email protected]' with the 'systemd --user' process is not ended too, even after logging out.
    Edit: This is due to the session c1 still active; see next post.
    I don't know if this is intentional, maybe it is a feature.
    Now I found and propose a way to change this apparently default behavior, if it is not wanted.
    First to end the 'systemd --user' process at logout, it is easy; just run:
    $ systemctl --user enable exit.target
    Edit: This is useless, sorry; see next post
    Then to run a process in background, which should end when logging out, just launch it like this:
    $ systemd-run --user loop.sh
    This will launch the command 'loop.sh' as a service in the 'systemd --user' manager, instead of the 'session-c1.scope';
    and it will be ended at logout, because the manager is now ended at logout, with the normal end of the manager.
    Edit: see next post
    I will continue studying this matter, to see if something else interesting can be found.
    Edit: See the 'Edit:' lines above for the modifications, before the explanations in the next post.

  • [Solved] White screen after KDE 4.11.1 upgrade

    Hi!
    I updated the system going from KDE 4.11.0 to KDE 4.11.1. On reboot I got the correct loading of KDM, but upon arrival on the desktop the latter is presented fully white with big red button with an "X" in them. Thinking it was the configuration of kde, I deleted .kde4 with the effect that the next time I always white screen (that is only the red buttons have disappeared).
    I try to remove completely kde with:
    pacman -Rsnc kde
    and seeing that reinstalling I get the same result, I also tried to clean up the cache pacman packages listed by the command:
    ls kde*4.11.1*
    so I redownload and reinstalled with:
    pacman -Syu kde
    without solution. I also tried to do what is recommended in the wiki, that is in addition to eliminating .kde4, I run:
    $ rm ~/.config/Trolltech.conf
    $ kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
    without solution.
    Thinking then it might be the partition / almost full, I checked with:
    df
    but the partition is not filled even for half of the 30gb that is available.
    I checked some logs and these are the outputs:

    Thanks Thaodan! I deleted /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and I solve the problem! I also restore .kde4_backup and at the moment have no issue.
    Small question: I noticed that there are also kdecache-kdm and kdecache-root. I should remove it or doesn't matter?
    Thanks for the help!
    THANKS, my White Screen was caused by a combination of issues but this solution worked for me.
    My Problem -
    I am not sure exactly what caused my white screen, I was playing around with /etc/profile & /etc/sudoers
    What I changed -
    sudoers - I added my user group to sudoers and allowed sudo to execute applications using xauth in home dir
    profile - changed umask to 133 ( I hate execute bit ) and default text editor to nano
    What Happened -
    Tried to reload via source but no changes where taking effect so I rebooted.
    Upon reboot I could not login to KDE, it would keep looping back to the KDM after I entered by password for my user, however it would let me login as root ( after I enabled root login ).
    I figured this was a permission issue so I changed umask back to 022 in /etc/profile, I was then greeted with the White Screen after login.  I read numerous posts about how to fix this, most said to reinstall kde and delete /tmp, none of this worked.
    I deleted /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER and now I am back in business ( I had to re set the widgets, i.e. panel ).
    I was so excited that I had to write a post about it!
    Thanks again!

  • Session state always invalid after login

    Hello community,
    i have a functional login process which uses my own login with username and password. After login i branch to application start page, but this session now is different from the start login session, so every login is invalid and will branch to authentication scheme invalid page.
    My login url is: f?p=100:100:123456
    After correct login (i have tested in the database with a lot of inserts into tmp_table)
    i want to branch with the standard login procedure wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.login() to page 1000.
    The correct url is shown in the browser, but the current page is the login page 100, because (i think) the session is invalid. In the authentication theme the invalid session page is set to page 100.
    I have tested several pages and always this page is branched.
    So im shure, that the session state is always invalid after login.
    But why ????
    Has anyone an idea ?
    Thank you for responding.
    Frank

    Hi Jari,
    problem was solved.
    The IE8 has cached an invalid site.
    I know now were it is come from.
    I have an after submit process which sets the cookie with following code:
    owa_util.mime_header('text/html; charset=UTF-8;', FALSE);
    owa_cookie.send(
    name=>'DHW_COOKIE',
    value=>utl_raw.cast_to_raw(dbms_obfuscation_toolkit.md5(input_string => ':P100_REGCODE' || :P100_USERNAME ))
    owa_util.http_header_close;
    But this results in display on the screen like html text without tags, so it looks like text on the screen header.
    It shows "content-type=text/html charset=WINDOWS 1252 .......
    The cookie is not set to the disk and now the IE8 explorer is dead.
    The described problem of this thread is shown.
    If you close all sessions and restart IE8 then the error is fixed.
    Also i have disabled the after submit process with setting the cookie.
    So i live now without having a cookie set.
    Do you have any idea for this behaviour ?

  • OSX 10.9 Mavericks is there any way to hide servers which always appear in finder after login (hide login items doesn't work as stardered)

    hi all my boss has just got himself a nice new mac and wants to connect it on to my windows domain at work, no problems there it’s all connect fine, one thing we done was to map a few of our network drives on our domain so he can easily load them to his mac, works great when it’s on the domain however when he goes home and logs in for each mapped drive it throws up a window saying it can’t connect or when it is connect opens up every drive, even after disabling them at login, now on the apple website the text reads "if you don’t want an item's window to be visible after login, select hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the finder after login), does anyone know any work around that can maybe solve this or point me in the direction where I can find one.

  • Agent going to ready state after login

    Hi guys,
    I have UCCX 5.0(2) and I would like to force agent to go to state ready after login. There were some posts on this topic and they suggested to play with workflow:
    1. add add action agent ready at startup - for this I get: "Error on Startup Event. Error Message: An Agent State Action may only be used on Answered and Dropped Events."
    2. add macro - record putting agent in ready state (keystroke Ctrl +W). This I can do, but agent gets error during login: " Could not execute Macro Action. Unable to playback to windows program."
    Did you have similar problems? Did you solve it and how? Or maybe you have some other idea how to force agent to go in ready state after login?
    BR,
    Jelena

    Hi,
    Problem An agent using Windows XP was able to start Agent Desktop, but was
    not able to enter an active state.
    Solution Windows XP can be configured so that the Internet Connection Firewall
    (ICF) is active. ICF acts by keeping track of all traffic to and from the
    computer; it will only allow information through that has originated from
    that particular computer. If a message originates from outside the
    computer, it will be discarded.
    To solve this problem, either turn off ICF (requires someone with
    administrator rights to the computer) or override the defaults to include
    known “good” connections like the CAD servers.
    And also, is it by any chance happening during a failover or failback scenario in a High Availability (HA) setup?
    If its a HA setup, did you install this CAD after the HA setup is made i.e. the CAD has the entries for the ip address of the both the nodes.
    Hope it helps,
    Anand

  • [Solved] Several problems after switch to systemd

    After many issues with today's update (like broken locale, broken suspend2ram, broken shutdown/restart, broken autologin, broken CPU clocking, broken fan control and broken wicd) I'm stuck with three of them, the most important being wicd.
    Autologin is working now and after login I have to enter a password for wicd (which was not the case before the update). After entering the password I get the dbus connection error: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wi … or_message If I kill wicd (which is runnig directly after boot, but not running properly), starting and stopping and starting again with systemctl works fine. But the autostart mostly fails for some reason (in rare cases it works though). I'm quite new to systemd and don't even know hot to open the new journal in a proper editor to search for errors efficiently.
    The second thing is that the locale is being reset to C or POSIX I suppose, at least it's not German as it should be and also is set in /etc/locale.conf.
    The third thing is that the Thinkpad fan control fails to start, too. I created a .conf file to load the thinkpad_acpi module which seems to work. If I start /usr/sbin/tpfand manually, the fan control works. But here also the autostart fails.
    Sorry for the confused description containing about nothing on error or debug information, but I don't really know where to start digging and get useful information about systemd.
    Thanks for any hint,
    PhotonX

  • Problems after login

    My Mac started doing this a few weeks ago, where after login it all kind of collapses.  Sometimes the desktop icons won't show up, or Hear (which runs on startup) will get stuck loading for a long time.  Sometimes everything seems fine but no programs will launch, or the dock won't respond.
    So far I've done an Onyx cleanup run, a Disk Verify and Repair, Permissions Verify and Repair and even did the good old Command+R on startup and reinstalled Lion.  It worked the first time and then it went back to its old antics.
    Any ideas?  I'm afraid if its a corrupted file and even if I get a new Mac (this one has gone through all kinds of things, including getting catapulted out of my backpack into the street in Hungary) then when I restore from Time Machine it'll carry over.
    Thanks

    If a new user solved the issue, then you either have too many apps starting up at login and/or at least one which puts problems. In order to see what you have there go to system preferences/users and groups/you/login items, you must have a short list, as attached.
    If not too many here, then you may have a corrupt system.

  • Stuck in "loop" or "hang" after login

    Running a MacBook Pro with 10.5.4 and Filevault on (company policy, so turning it off isn't an option). Sometimes after I start up the computer I will get to the logon screen enter my password and the computer will hang. The background doesn't change to my user backgrounds and I need to do a hard reset.
    I've tried disk repair, permissions repair, running fsck -fy in single user mode, amongst other things. Some other suggestions, like deleting preferences files don't work because FileVault is enabled.
    Thoughts on other things to try?

    I just had this problem and couldn't find a solution online, so for the record (I'm presuming it's too late for you) here is what worked for me.
    First the symptom: upon booting I could get to the login screen with no issues. I could login to accounts that didn't have filevault enabled, but not the account with it (it would hang after login, never changing to my desktop background).
    First workaround: Logged in as root and manually opened the username.sparsebundle file (under Users/.username), using the FileVault password. At this point I could see that all the files were intact, and access them. Then I got a warning from Sophos Antivirus that a file needed to be moved to the infected folder and I had to enter a password for it. After that, login worked fine. But after the next logout I had the same problem.
    Final workaround: Turning off Sophos (not just the moving of files but also active scanning) solved the problem. Best guess is that Sophos is trying to move files before login and doesn't have the permission to move them to the right place but you can't see that it's needing that feedback so it just stalls indefinitely.
    I note that another user with this problem also had Sophos installed (see topic "Can't login after enabling FileVault"). I only had the problem after transferring a bunch of old email to my machine (with windows viruses in some of the attachments). Of course these caused my mac no threat, but this combined with the need for a password for file movement triggered the weird behavior.
