[SOLVED]Run startx after login?

I have a laptop with multiple users.
Is it possible to have a different setup for each user, stored in their /home/ folder? So, when I log in, all I see is the terminal, but when another user, say a guest user, logs in, LXDE starts up.
Right now, I put this in my .xinitrc file (startlxde in guest, xmonad in my own), but is it possible to set start different programs for different users after login? I would prefer start x on my own from my own user, but my brother who frequently use my laptop don't want to type startx each time he logs in.

Assuming you set up the right .xinitrc in each users ~/ this (from the wiki) will startx automatically for each user you decide to bless with the additions to their .bash_profile

  • [SOLVED] Autostart startx after login

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem with autostarting startx after I log in.
So far the machine boots, terminal login dialog appears, I log in, get my terminal and start X manually via "startx".
But I want my system to start X automatically after logging in. Without me typing in the command.
So I did some research (both internet and the Arch forums) and couldn't come up with a working solution to that problem.
More or less every thread links to the Start X at Login page.
And I did add the lines in question to my .bash_profile (after I made a skeleton copy of it, as described).
But still nothing happens after logging in (I waited for about half a minute). So it doesn't work for, or I am doing something wrong.
    Here my .bash_profile:
    # ~/.bash_profile
    [[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc
    [[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx
I have no idea how to proceed.
Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?

Nothing happens?  Do you mean you are just at a command prompt, no errors, nothing?  And you are not logged out?  Even with a faulty or empty xinitrc, this would still end your current login session.
So it seems the conditionals don't pass.  This means either that X is already running, or you do not have an active login session.  Are you booting with an alternative init system?  If you get to a command prompt enter the following commands and report their results:
    pgrep Xorg
    echo $0
    echo $XDG_VTNR
    loginctl
    uname -a

  • User logout event bundle running shortly after login

I have created two bundles that run on User Login and User Logout events. The login one works fine, and so does the logout one but at the incorrect time. On average the logout event bundle is fired about 40-60 seconds after login, whilst still logged in.
I tried modifying the bundle to trigger on Zen Logout instead but the same thing happens.
I have another two similar bundles that do the same, but for Administrator accounts rather than DLU+roaming profile accounts. The logout event also triggers while the user is still logged in.
On both user types when I actually logout no further triggering of the bundle takes place.
Can something else trigger this event other than a desktop logout? This is using ZCM client 11.0.0.41501.

My guess is that it tries to run at logout, but cannot complete and then
    finishes at logon.
Simply put, Setting an action at logout is rarely a good option since
ZCM cannot control the logout/shutdown process.
Anything with such a setting needs to be able to complete almost
    instantaneously.

  • [SOLVED] Execute script after login

    Hi,
I want to execute a script after I logged in, but it fails. There is no problem, when I do this manually.
    My ~/.xsession:
    #!/bin/sh
    ~/bin/select-monitor.sh
I tried to paste this in .xinitrc, also, but it fails, too.
    What can I do?
EDIT: Okay, this has solved my problem:

/etc/pam.d/common-auth exists only to be included in other, service-specific PAM files, so one can easily change auth mechanisms for all/majority services at once. You don't have it, so probably you have fully separate PAM files, without common include; so you should just apply those common-auth advices to all services you are going to modify. As always with PAM -- BE CAUTIOUS. Especially if your machine sits a few hundred km away

  • [solved]Running programs after extracting from a tarball

Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to run a program after extraction from the tarball archive? I know that you can use the official packages, the AUR, or build your own package, but I'm just curious. I downloaded the firefox nightly 64bit linux tar.gz file and extracted it to my /home folder. Double clicking the firefox executable simply brings up a prompt that tells me to choose an application to open it, and in bash it says that command is not found, even though I went to the correct directory. Any ideas?

    1. You probably need to give it executable permissions. 2. The title of this thread is misleading, I thought you were going to ask if you could run a program from inside a tarball (which I don't believe is possible, but I don't know). 3. This is a bad idea; just install it using the AUR or write a PKGBUILD yourself.
Keeping programs around in your ~ is silly.
    All the best,

  • [Solved] KDE4 won´t finish loading after login-in with KDM

I have been trying to solve this for a while but I'm still struggling to solve it. The problem is that I can't successfully start KDE4; after trying to log as a normal user with a password the loading screen that shows the KDE icons (a harddrive, some tools and a globe) it gets stuck on the desktop icon.
I could load KDE once, but I had to start X first and then use the xterm to call startkde, nevertheless it didn't asked for a user/pass and there was no menu visible only the desktop with the computer icon. (Not to mention I had to start it manually.)
This are the points that are currently apply to my machine:
KDE was installed as the normal user with sudo.
It was installed using the minimal install command:  pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-es phonon-vlc kdebase-workspace.
Right now I'm trying to start KDE at boot by using the inittab method. As suggested in here.
Because of it, if I try to run startx it will load kdm which will then try to load KDE without success.
This is the .xinitrc file in my user folder.
    exec ck-launch-session startkde

I believe that the most important file here is the xsession-error, and as I have said the file is cut at last line that appeared before the KDE got stuck, in case it is not enough info just tell me how much should I let it run.
    Any suggestions?

Compositing is needed for the desktop effects, everything from shadows under windows to things like the desktop cube. Its difficult to say whether its a nvidia or kde bug since I was just going on guesswork; I know that compositing is started at about the point you mention the freezes. I don't know how far KDE loaded when you started it manually since I don't really recognise your description of what it was like but I'd guess that some other window manager (twm perhaps if you've been following the wiki) was already running, in which case kwin (which does the compositing) would not have started.
Since desktop effects really improve the look and feel of kde (things like shadows and improved window switchers, desktop cube and the like are pure eye-candy) you may wish to debug further. Your graphics card should be able to run desktop effects as I have a laptop with a previous generation nvidia chip which runs fine after a bit of tweaking.
If you load the desktop effects section of system settings you should see a checkbox "Enable desktop effects" if you check that you'll be able to switch to the "All effects" tab. Try disabling the Blur effect and clicking "Apply". If kwin still can enable compositing you'll see a box with a countdown that will automatically disable desktop effects again if you don't choose to keep the new settings. You might also want to try changing the scale method from "Accurate" to "Smooth" in the advanced tab.

  • Autostart screen session after running startx?

I have the following in my .zshrc:
    if [[ $STY = '' ]] then screen -d -R chris; fi
This works great when using GDM: I log in, and upon opening a terminal, I have my screen session. I can then open another terminal and the screen session is transferred across, detached in the previous terminal window.
If I don't use GDM, screen starts when I log in (in framebuffer mode?), as I'd expect. But then when I type 'startx' and open a terminal in GNOME, my screen session isn't transferred.
Is there a way to get screen to start in gnome-terminal, after running 'startx'?

It does, I'd just rather not type it.
Using GDM as my login method, gnome-terminal automatically grabs the screen session (because it's not already started?).
Using startx method, gnome-terminal doesn't get the screen session.
I just wonder if there's a way to get the first outcome with the second method?

  • Hi, I got the problem with Firefox 27.0.1. I can not run Selenium on Firefox after login a website for automation testing. The browser is not responding.

Hi, I got the problem with Firefox 27.0.1. I can not run Selenium on Firefox after login a website for automation testing. The browser is not responding. However when I close Nunit, the page is back to be normal. The title is returned to the name of website without "not responding". I sure this problem did not happen on Firefox version 26. I just got this problem when firefox upgrading automatically to version 27. Please help me fix this problem because it is very important for my work. If you need more information pls send your concerns via my email address.
    Thanks so much

Hi, the work around suggested above should put you in working mode in the meantime. However to help investigate the issue it is possible to analyze what is not loading or taking a long time by analyzing the network traffic or http headers of the Nunit web page.

If you post the results with out the user data, we are happy to help.

  • [solved] Xorg quits after 'startx' no error message

    Hi guys,
So I'm a little perplexed. One day my system just started quitting xorg. I had it to startx upon login, but that would just flash my monitors black and then return my to a login prompt. So I went in and tried to analyse the log file but I didn't have much luck. I'm going to post it here and hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.

[ 569.688] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
I have my system fully up to date, I really have no idea why one day it would just stop working.
I saw that at line 568.521 there was a failure of ACPI but I really am not sure how that would affect my system.
Only thing I can think of in conjunction with this issue, is that I setup my foldingathome client to be enabled in systemctl. It started making weird graph glitches in my tty so I disabled it. Not sure if they are linked or not.
    Thanks!

I uninstalled nvidia-304xx and installed nvidia with needed dependencies. This is the output I get from running 'startx'. It does the exact same thing, looks like it's going to load screen flickers and then kicks me back saying it was terminated successfully.

My MacBook Air running on Snow Leopard gets extremely slow (almost like a hang, except if you wait about half an hr, it actually moves) after login interface. Sometimes it never gets past the background of the homepage, desktop doesn't seem to load. After multiple forced shut downs and left to run for hours, sometimes the desktop loads but the dock does not respond when applications are opened. The computer is then unable to shut down normally. Forced shut downs are necessary most times. Time machine backup takes extremely long, and attempts to use the time machine to bring the laptop back to the time befiore the problem arose was met with extremely slow and hung time machine function.
    Please help!

There isn't much besides a failing hard drive or other hardware fault that can cause those symptoms. Run the Apple Hardware Test, or just take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • [SOLVED] Run xrandr on ever startx

I'm currently attempting a dual monitor setup and I have found that the best fix for my setup is to run:
    xrandr --output DVI-1 --auto --right-of DVI-0
What I am trying to do is run this after I run startx but it never seems to work out. I have tried placing it in .xinitrc, here is what that looks like:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    exec startxfce4
    xrandr --output DVI-1 --auto --right-of DVI-0
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] Xorg Strangeness- Running startx runs xorg for a split second

As in the subject, I am trying to run startx on my Arch (x86_64) machine for the first time since installation, however X only runs for a split second before quitting.. I've checked the log, but there aren't any errors that pop up to tell me what's going on.  What I've been doing that I think may affect the answer:
Installed proprietary nvidia drivers that I downloaded off of nvidia's website (though I removed it by running sudo ./driver.run -uninstall)
Installed nvidia drivers from the repository (sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils)
shut off nouveau drivers (blacklisted nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d)
Ran nvidia-xconfig to generate new xorg.conf file
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows nothing with (EE), so I assume that everything is going smoothly, however still can't get X to work.  Any help would be appreciated.  Google's let me down so far.
Perhaps some fresh eyes could help me

It may even be simpler than that. If this is a new installation, a desktop environment or window manager may not be installed. In that case, the Xorg server has nothing to do. Install a desktop environment or window manager and see if Xorg continues running once it has something to do.
Listen to this man. What I meant by Xorg dependencies is that people usually install xterm, xclock, etc so they have a very basic WM set up so they can see that Xorg is in fact working. Try setting up a .xinitrc with the following in it:
    exec startxfce4 --with-ck-launch
Or even try to launch it manually with:
    $ startxfce4

  • [SOLVED] Running Systemd service on login (encrypted home partition)

    Hi,
I have a dm-crypt/LUKS encrypted home partition that's mounted via PAM on login. I'm trying to use a systemd service (profile-sync-daemon), but the service tries to start and access the home partition before the partition is mounted. The service does seem to start successfully, but it doesn't gain access to necessary files on the home partition and malfunctions later on. Is there a sane hack to somehow delay the start of the service until the relevant partition gets mounted (basically after login)? Manually starting the service after login works just as intended in this case - I'm just looking for a way to automate this process.
I have an idea of starting the service via Openbox autostart, but I've currently failed in my attempts.

Things got quite complicated and hacky as I researched this so I went out of the box a bit (or took the easy way out, whichever you prefer) and reinstalled Arch with a full disk encryption. All is fine now and I also expect to see less problems overall in the future. If anyone wants to continue researching this it would probably be a good idea to start a new thread.
