[solved] Boot issues after update caused by LVM

Hi,
I know that there are some threads regarding boot issues but I haven't been able to find a solution for my problem.
I have the following partitions:
$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 74.5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 128M 0 part /boot
├─sda2 8:2 0 2G 0 part [SWAP]
└─sda3 8:3 0 72.4G 0 part
├─vg_trinity-root (dm-0) 254:0 0 10G 0 lvm /
└─vg_trinity-home (dm-1) 254:1 0 25G 0 lvm /home
I have
USELVM="yes"
in my rc.conf and the following im mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata lvm2 filesystems"
Still, when booting the volume group does not get activated. The following message appears:
:: running hook [lvm2]
Activating logical volumes...
No volume groups found
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/vg_trinity-root ...
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/mapper/vg_trinity-root'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
[rootfs /]#
At that point I just run
lvm vgchange -ay
exit the shell and booting continues. So somehow activation of the volume group does not occur early enough. I reinstalled udev, mkinitcpio, linux and generated a new boot image as proposed in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1059124 but to no avail. Is there anything else that might be wrong with my configuration?
Thanks for any help.

My apologies. Usually I'm quite good at searching but this one slipped right past me. Marking as solved (even though the root cause is still WIP).

  • Anyone see an ios 7.1.2 boot issue AFTER updating?

    From everything I read, I wonder if iOS 7.1.2 has a general boot issue. I have 4 devices, one of which locked on update. When i reset it and checked the crash log, my reset counter was zero and it said there was a boot failure. There was no indication of any application crash for the time in question.
    I never reboot any of my devices, so I don't know, but it crossed my mind that perhaps the lockups on boot or booting into recovery mode has nothing to do with the update process, but is related to rebooting 7.1.2 in general. In other words, just because the devices are working fine now, is there still a chance that any of them can lockup or go into recovery mode the next time they are reset?

    There appears to be a plethora of similar reports out there (I've been looking around).   So we wait for Apple to provide a fix for this problem.
    What I am most unhappy about is the inability to downgrade to, at least, the last known working firmware; in this case, 7.1.1.   In situations like this, newly introduced problems become a corporate liability, more so on the part of end users that experience limited use of these expensive devices due to these newly-introduced problems.  Then, there is the added liability of support calls, feedback/bug reports, etc.
    I do not see any logic in the decision to disable downgrading firmware -- in this case, it's seems more paranoia (ie: jailbreak prevention) than a solid engineering decision, in my opnion.

  • [Solved] Boot problem after update

    After updating my Archlinux (64bit) installation and rebooting it a few minutes ago
    I have encountered the following problem. The boot process is hanging after
    activation of logical volumes. Here are the boot messages:
    Booting the kernel.
    :: Staring udevd...
    done.
    :: Running Hook [udev]
    :: Triggering uevents…done.
    :: Running Hook [lvm2]
    Activating logical volumes…
    15 logical volume(s) in volume group "system" now active
    I have also tried the fallback kernel. The same problem!
    What is going wrong?

    Mac OSx won't boot up after update to 10.6.7?

    Hi Mike
    This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
    When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

  • Boot issue after shutdown plus power - no problem after restart or after removing power cord

    Hello,
    I have a Pavilion Elite m9275.nl desktop. I experience boot issues after a regular shut down.
    After a regular shut down and pressing the power button within a few seconds/minutes, it keeps hanging in the HP startup / BIOS screen, Windows 8 won't boot, the hard drive light doesn't flash;
    After a restart from Windows (instead of shut down) it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all;
    After a shut down and removing the power cord for 10-15 minutes, it boots correctly from the c-drive. No hard-drive problems at all.
    When the PC does not boot, F10 (to enter BIOS settings) does not work neither, so it seems to be a hardware or BIOS issue.
    I already replaced the CMOS battery and already loaded default BIOS settings.
    During a succesful boot or after pressing F10 (to enter BIOS settings) the screen shows some disk information right after the BIOS. This is the screen that says something like "press CTRL-I to start configuration utility". During a succesful boot the hard disk light flashes shortly before displaying that screen. During an unsuccesful boot the hard disk doesn't flash.
    Before replacing a hardware component, I need to know what to replace...
    Could it be the hard disk controller or hard disk is defect?
    Where is the hard disk controller stored?
    Can I upgrade the firmware of the hard disk controller?
    BUT: why does it work when I remove the power cord for 15 minutes or after a restart (instead of a shutdown and than pressing power)?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sjoerd-Jaap Westra

  • Does anyone solved wifi issue after ios 6 or 6.1.2 or 6.1.3?

    My wifi works intermitently. sometimes it is grayed out, sometimes it is just searching network. I dont know how this issue has come? This all started after ios 6.1.2. and ios 6.1.3 didnt fix it for me. Have done all reset or restoration as a new device but with no success. I think apple is going to bite the dust very soon if this continues. Please note the router is woking fine coz i m running new ipad on ios 6.1.2 and there is no issue with wifi. Should i wait for ios next update or get the wifi module fix.? this is what i was told by one person who does all phone repair work.
    Suggest something concrete. i am without wifi since last 1.5 months now. Apple is just ignoring the problem. does anybody solved this issue after multiple software updates ? The problem is my warranty is gone in January itself. and i have purchased this phone from USA and i live in india.

    See if this helps

    if not, it is hardware failure. Apple provides warrantee support for iPhones only in the country of sale.

  • Syncing issues after updating to 10.3.1.55

    After upgrading to itunes 10.3.1.55, today, it no longer recognizes my iPhone 4. I plug it in, the iPhone makes its normal syncing noice. I get a prompt, like always about it recognizing the camera and how i want to handle it. I cancel it, as usual, and then it never shows up in iTunes. I close itunes, connect my phone and it does not start itunes as it normally should. No error messages, just no response. Can anyone help with ideas?

    I had the same issue, after updating to 10.3.1.55 it would error out saying something along the lines of not being able to read the catalog or something.  I think the error even states do a restore to fix it.  Last night that is what I did, clicked restore and then had it transfer all my items back.  I'm glad I had just synced my phone prior to the update so the restore was really current.

    Its not a network issue as well, since i am typing this on Firefox, which is running perfectly
    What could be the reason?

    I'm having the same issue on my iMac. I've also noticed the rear of the left side is getting a lot hotter than normal.

  • Issues after updating iPhone3GS to iOS5 on TIM cellular data network (Italy)

    Hi everyone
    I have issues after updating iPhone3GS to iOS5 on TIM cellular data network.
    After installing iOS5 I had to switch from apn ibox.tim.it to wap.tim.it
    Since then the phone is unusable for any internet activity that is barely "data demanding" (e.g facebook app take literaly hours to update), everyting requires way to much time... the iPhone is not an iPhone anymore... it's worse than my blackberry with just GPRS on it.
    TIM technical support suggested me to switch back on apn ibox.tim.it, but then I would not be able to use internet tethering anymore (they say because of Apple iOS5) ... to bad I need internet tethering for work.
    I am seriously thinking to switch ISP or phone.
    Anyone did experience same problem / found a solution?

    Hi Raia.D,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    The first thing I would suggest is to restart your iPhone.  Then tap the Settings app, and you should see Cellular listed on the main settings screen.  You should see Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and then Cellular.
    Here are some additional troubleshooting steps to try:

  • [SOLVED]Boot hang after recent updating issues

    I am having issues after the last update. First, I made a mistake of holding back the filesystem package. Because of this (at least I think so) I was having an error that said it could not boot because at boot it said "/sbin/init does not exist". I solved this by upgrading the filesystem package by chrooting from a live arch usb. Now I am having an issue where my system hangs at boot, I believe it is right after systemd runs fsck although I might be wrong. But after maybe 5 minutes it just starts as usual... my ususal boot time is less than a minute. What should I do?
    This is from a thread i accidentally hijacked:
    cfr wrote:
    Try systemctl --failed and or examine the journal for clues.
    Post fstab. Are all of the disks referred to there available when you boot? If systemd can't find them, it will basically wait until it times out and I think that's about 5 minutes and then it will continue booting (assuming it isn't missing anything critical, of course).
    My fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda6
    UUID=5dc84b70-a9f9-42eb-981c-40e84f7e9e75 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda6
    UUID=5dc84b70-a9f9-42eb-981c-40e84f7e9e75 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=f7bccd4f-4b47-4dbb-a8f8-d8e374bb9867 /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    # /dev/sda7
    UUID=07dcd099-50c4-4c35-a102-10a39b74ac0b none swap defaults 0 0
    Would deleting the second /dev/sda6 fix it?

    Thanks jasonwryan So my exact boot time was 1 minute and 34.151 seconds (which is not unbearable but like i said it used to be in a matter of seconds)... The kernel took  2.790 seconds and userspace took 1 minute and 31.361 Output of systemd-analyze blame :

    Now maybe I am wrong, but these don't add up to 1 min 31 seconds...It actually adds to about 9 seconds which is probably my old boot time.. What am I missing here?

  • Boot issues after bios update (U430 touch)

    Hi all,
    I've been having some problems after updating my BIOS on my Ideapad U430 touch. After updating 7CCN34WW to 7CCN35WW, Windows 7 would not boot. It shows the usual 4 colors swirling to the center and then it stalls. Interestingly enough, at the top of the screen, white dotted lines appear (about 1 cm thick). These dotted lines alternate, turning off and on irregularely. I've waiting at least a half an hour, nothing happens.
    Now I figured out how to solve this, which is by changing the boot settings in the bios to Legacy instead of UEFI. After changing it back to UEFI everything works again. But every other day or so it still hangs during UEFI and I have to change the bios settings back and forth to get into Windows. Can anyone enlighten me on this issue? It would seem the bios update is faulty? What's going on? Can I downgrade the bios?
    In addition, the following topics are related but not quite the same as they don't describe the exact problem I have.

    hi gannixon,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
       Yes it is possible that a UEFI / Secureboot check fails something in the  OS UEFI boot after the update.
    The system does not support a backflash feature, Reflashing the BIOS might need to be done in Lenovo Service Depot,
        If you don't have much data on the unit, I can suggest performing a one key Recovery while on a UEFI mode.
    Downside will be Deletion of current files and documents and back up will be required.

  • Logic Remote connectivity issues after updating to iOS 8 (solved!)

    Has anyone else has been experiencing connectivity issues with Logic Remote after updating to iOS 8?
    After updating to iOS 8 I could no longer connect so I sent a feedback report to Apple and got a response that cleared up my problem immediately:
    Navigate to the following directory on your desktop system running GarageBand:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/Data/Library/Preferences/
    You can quickly navigate there using the “Go” menu in Finder -> Go To Folder (shift-command-G), then copy this path:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.garageband10/Data/Library/Preferences/
    In the Preferences folder should be a file named "com.apple.garageband10.cs”.
    Make sure GarageBand is not running and delete the  "com.apple.garageband10.cs” file.
    Relaunch GarageBand and see if you should now be able to connect.
    The same can be done for Logic by navigating to:
    ~/Library/Preferences/
    And deleting "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" and restarting Logic.
    Note that doing this will fix Logic Remote connectivity issues (and possibly other problems with latency and mixer functionality)  but will also delete any other Controller settings that you've configured with Logic, if you happen to be using another controller of some sort.

    Thanks very much!  This solved my connection problem.

  • Wi-fi issues after updating to iOS 6 (SOLVED!)

    If you are having an issue over the wi-fi connection after updating to iOS 6, where the log-in to your wi-fi network fail and send you to an Apple web page, this is how I solved it:
    Turn of your iPhone, not restart or restore, just turn it off, wait 10 seconds and turn on the iPhone again... Bingo! you'll will have wi-fi again.
    No idea how to turn of the iPhone?
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    (article link)
    It's important to do this and not hold the Sleep/Wake button until the device restart, because I did that first and that's what started the problem. Remember, SLIDE TO POWER OFF is the trick.
    I think this is a Facetime related problem now that it works over your cellular network, but I'm not sure. Let's hope more info to come along or a fix from apple be issue.
    Hope it help.
    Best regards to everyone.

    Here's what I did that I read in another thread that appears to have worked for the time being:
    1. Go to settings-->Safari-->Clear Cookies and Data
    2. You will get a pop that asks to you confirm that you would like to clear cookies and data, do it.
    3. Restart your iPhone by holding the home button and on/off button UNTIL THE APPLE LOGO APPEARS ON THE SCREEN.  Don't let go early.
    4. If not connected to wifi, connect through settings menu.
    Again, this fixed my problem but others are reporting that it did not work for them.  Good luck and hopefully Apple will get a patch out ASAP.
