[Solved] Boot problem after update

After updating my Archlinux (64bit) installation and rebooting it a few minutes ago
I have encountered the following problem. The boot process is hanging after
activation of logical volumes. Here are the boot messages:
Booting the kernel.
:: Staring udevd...
done.
:: Running Hook [udev]
:: Triggering uevents…done.
:: Running Hook [lvm2]
Activating logical volumes…
15 logical volume(s) in volume group "system" now active
I have also tried the fallback kernel. The same problem!
What is going wrong?
Regards
Nik

The first clause in the sentence tells you that you can search the boards for the answer; the second provides the high-level solution.

    Hi,
I have some problems to get an ip address with dhcp on the device eth0. On wlan0 I get a ip address with dhcp depending on the network.
Anyone with the same problem after the update from version 5 to version 6?
After downgrading to version 5 everything works fine...
    Thank you!
    EDIT:
Don't know what it was, today after updating only networkmanager everything works fine.

  • [SOLVED] Boot problems after rEFInd update

    Hello,
I dual boot windows and arch using rEFInd. After an rEFInd update yesterday my system directly boots into windows. Any ideas how to bring the rEFInd menu back?
    Thanks!
Last edited by Cygnus (2012-09-27 08:45:52)

The refind-efi package install the file to /usr/{lib,share}/refind/*  . You need to manually copy the files to UEFISYS partition. The files in /boot/efi/EFI/arch/refind/* should have been removed when refind-efi-x86_64 pkg was removed. BTW try gummiboot-efi also.

  • [solved] audio problem after update

hi, after the kernel update of yesterday i have a problem with my audio. after a reboot, my audio is totally absent. i have saw that the pulseaudio process is present and activate, and all graphically is ok (all indicators works well). the strange thing is that if i put headphones and then i releave them, all magically works normally!

ok i don't need it...i have solved with
Load equalizer and dbus module on every boot
Edit the file /etc/pulse/default.pa with your favorite editor and append the following lines:
    ### Load the integrated PulseAudio equalizer and D-Bus module
    load-module module-equalizer-sink
    load-module module-dbus-protocol
on wiki of pulseaudio...i don't know why, i had already done it in past, but i don't know why on my default.pa there aren't these lines..seems now it works!

  • [Solved] Several problems after update

    Hi.
I updated my system (yaourt -Syua).
Since then I have three problems, I don't know how much connected to each other.
    First,
I can't enter LXDE. After I login, I get back the login screen of xdm.
When I go init 3, and start startx from console, then I get a black screen, until I do AltCtrlF7.
Meanwhile on the console this happens:
    [laca@varch ~]$ startx
    X.Org X Server 1.12.4
    ... etc ... etc ...
errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
    No protocol specified
waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    and so on.
    Second,
My .Xauthority and .bash_history files got reset to 0 length.
And every time I log out, or explicitly do a history -w , the .bash_history file gets touched, but remains 0 length.
    Third,
When I ssh with X forwarding to that machine, and want to start an X client, then I get:
X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
(It may be independent of the update.)
    Any help appreciated.

  • Equium A200 - Boot problems after update

*After installing what i gather is the most recent update for windows vista and when the computer re-boots itself, i am greeted with the following message:*
' +WIndows failed to start. A recent Hardware or Software change may be the cause. To fix the problem:+
+1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer+
+2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next."+
    +3. Click "repair your computer."+
+If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.+
    +File: /Boot?BCD+
    +Status: 0xc000000f+
+info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.'+
*Iv tried starting it in safe mode by holding F8 on the start up but this just causes the startup screen to flash whilst emmiting a high pitched noise, like an alarm.*
*Am i right in assuming that when it tells you to insert the windows intillation disk it is referring to the 'Product Recovery' disk i got with the laptop? if so, i am reluctant to use this disk as on the back of the casing it says 'WARNING: If you use the Product Recovery you will loose all the data on the hard disks....' Is this the only option or does it offer just a repair funtion which does not remove any files as i do have quite a number of very important files which were yet to be backed up.*
*Any help would be much appreciated*
    *Thanks*
    *Stores*

ok, took it to my dads work the other day and he used the proper windows vista disk to repair it, however, now every few days, if not every time we turn it off, when turning it on again it comes up with the same message, so dad has to take it into work again to get it restored.
I took it to the ICT team and school and they basically told me the hard drive is nackered, and buy a new one.....however, i just wanted to make sure there was nothing else i could do before going to this extreme.

  • [SOLVED] Boot problems after system upgrade

    hi everybody,
first of all i have to say, that the machine where i installed Arch is pretty old (something around 5 years).
I already tried installing Arch two times and every time after i performed a system upgrade, i couldn't boot arch.
Before the upgrade i rebooted several times to ensure that its working with the brand new installation - it worked.
Here i'm the 3rd try. This time i configured packman to ignore the kernel package and voila its working now with kernel 2.6.25.6-1.
So, here is my question: Is there any problem that could appear later on if i never upgrade the kernel?
I'm quite new to linux and really appreciate your support.
    Regards
    Daniel

Well ... the kernel, like any other piece of program, from time to time has to be patched if they find a bug in it.
Never upgrading means that you do not get the benefit of security and improvements patches.
There is also the issue that some programs, a few, may want to have a certain kernel to run but I think that is less common.
I, for instance, have not upgraded the kernel for a few months now because it screws up my wifi.
If you can live with that then  you are OK.

  • [solved] Boot issues after update caused by LVM

    Hi,
I know that there are some threads regarding boot issues but I haven't been able to find a solution for my problem.
    I have the following partitions:
    $ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
    sda 8:0 0 74.5G 0 disk
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 128M 0 part /boot
    ├─sda2 8:2 0 2G 0 part [SWAP]
    └─sda3 8:3 0 72.4G 0 part
    ├─vg_trinity-root (dm-0) 254:0 0 10G 0 lvm /
    └─vg_trinity-home (dm-1) 254:1 0 25G 0 lvm /home
    I have
    USELVM="yes"
in my rc.conf and the following im mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata lvm2 filesystems"
Still, when booting the volume group does not get activated. The following message appears:
    :: running hook [lvm2]
    Activating logical volumes...
    No volume groups found
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/vg_trinity-root ...
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/mapper/vg_trinity-root'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [rootfs /]#
At that point I just run
    lvm vgchange -ay
exit the shell and booting continues. So somehow activation of the volume group does not occur early enough. I reinstalled udev, mkinitcpio, linux and generated a new boot image as proposed in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1059124 but to no avail. Is there anything else that might be wrong with my configuration?
    Thanks for any help.

As you can see, earlier that day (before work) I (re)installed syslinux. System boots fine. I don't think this is an issue (but hey, whattoIknow )
So, I started the upgrade at 15:57. It finished, and I rebooted after. Like I always do.
Fast forward, come home. No sound!
    Check speakers: plugged in/turned on
Check pavucontrol - only dummy device available. Even if I choose "show all devices".
Check alsamixer - default device "pulseaudio". F6, change to Intel - shows mixers OK.
Set some program to use ALSA. Play music - works.
    Hm....
Could anyone help me out here? Where do I start troubleshooting next, and how do I resolve this?
This issue might or might not be related to this topic:
    Edit:
Either MPD or timidity++ was causing my soundcard to appear "busy" for pulse. After removing both daemons from rc.conf, pulse started working normally once again. I will update this thread if I find a solution to keep both timidity and mpd with working pulse. Keep an eye on new posts.
A big thanks to lucke for helping me out!

  • [SOLVED] X problem after update

I recently ran an update (via pacman) and now when I reboot, not only does slim not start (from daemons), when I type startx (tried both users), I get:
    /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: /usr/bin/X: Success
    giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error
Can someone please make sense of this? I use openbox as a WM if that helps (I doubt it does). It worked perfectly before the update and all of the daemons such as hal load on boot, so that can be eliminated.
I have also noticed that dhcpcd is far slower now.

  • Booting problems after updating 10.3 to 10.4

I recently did an "erase and install" of OSX 10.4 on my iBook and it worked fine for a few days and i got my iTunes library put back together, then it froze so i had to restart and it would get to the blue screen after the "loading OSX" window and stop loading anything. So i did another "erase and install" option and it worked again for a couple days and now it stays at the apple with the circular loading thing under it and if it gets past that then it gets stuck right after the loading box and never fully boots up. whats going on? this is getting very frustrating building my music library over and over again...
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   800 mhz, 256 ram, DVD/CD-RW, External Formac firwire DVD-RW

    the_differents,
Please note that the zero write step is normally considered a security step, not a maintenance or repair step. Apple does not recommend this as part of normal troubleshooting or repair, but it has gotten a dubious reputation among some users as having some special ability to repair "hidden" errors of some sort, or to prevent the accidental access of "left over" code or files after a normal erase or format.
The second claim is the most questionable, since any file system error that accesses such code would cause a crash whatever the data pattern & is in any case a file error that means the file system needs repair.
The step has some merit in pre-mapping bad blocks, but a normally functioning drive should do this without help anyway, so if it helps, you should be concerned about the drive's health.

Force close the App Store app and reset the iPad. No data will be lost when you reset the device.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Hello everyone.I have noticed some battery problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite like no charging at all (but the orange led was on )and not able to fully charged.I solve them with SMC reset and PRAM reset.Furthermore, battery discharges faster than before and its really annoying. Now I have notice that the upper right corner of my mac is getting hot.I'll appreciate any help
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
